Welcome to our second season brochure of 2010. We have had a fantastic start to the New Year with the Spring season’s selection of shows, and I am delighted to say that this will continue throughout the summer months.

Highlights this summer include chart-topping tenor Jonathan Ansell in Whistle Down the Wind, Milton Keynes Theatre favourite Paul Nicholas who returns to star in the Gilbert and Sullivan classic The Pirates of Penzance, and Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity who are sure to provide a breathtaking evening for the whole family to enjoy.
Strictly Tap Dance Fever
I am also delighted to announce that for the first time this autumn we will be presenting one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, English National Ballet. From its origins in the 1950s the Company has committed itself to taking classical ballet of the highest quality to the widest audience and we are thrilled that they will be bringing Shakespeare’s most famous love story Romeo and Juliet to us here in Milton Keynes. The annual Pantomime is always a highlight for Milton Keynes Theatre and this year will be no exception with a new production of Jack and the Beanstalk. Featuring brand-new sparkling sets, live music and an outstanding cast to be announced, I’m sure there has never ‘bean’ a Panto quite like this at the Theatre before. In other news, we have been working towards a new Creative Learning programme. Adults, teachers, schools, businesses and children can now all benefit from our variety of educational workshops and fun activities – please ensure you have a look at pages 26 & 27. Our annual dance show MKT Raw has also been given a make-over and we are pleased to announce we will be developing the project in partnership with Matthew Bourne’s company New Adventures. I would like to thank you for your continuing support of Milton Keynes Theatre and I very much value your feedback on all aspects of your visit to MKT. Many of you do get in touch, so please continue to email me with your comments at elizabethadlingtonmkt@theambassadors.com

Whistle Down the Wind is a truly inspiring musical that reveals how powerful love can be when the innocence of childhood collides with the cynicism of the adult world. In a twist of fate the bright-eyed and youthful Swallow discovers a mysterious man hiding in her family’s barn. When she asks for his identity the first words he utters are ‘Jesus Christ’ and it’s as though her prayers have been answered. While the rest of the townspeople are searching for a fugitive escaped from jail, Swallow gathers the town’s children who make a pact to protect their new found saviour from the cruelties of the outside world. Jonathan Ansell, who won the heart of the nation as lead vocalist in X Factor runners-up G4, stars as The Man in this, his musical debut. Music by

Paul Nicholas recreates the role he made famous, starring as the Pirate King in this lively rendition of one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operas supported by full cast and orchestra. Orphaned pirates, flat-footed policemen and a bevy of blushing beauties (the daughters of Major General Stanley) are the perfect ingredients for a fabulous feast of Gilbert and Sullivan. Elegantly recreating the original period settings and costumes, this acclaimed production combines Sullivan’s ever-popular and sparkling score with what has to be the most topsy-turvy of all Gilbert’s plots. Venture with us into the swashbuckling world of Frederic the pirate apprentice, who – born on February 29th in a leap year – won’t ‘come of age’ until he is 84!

By Alan
Bennett
One of the great plays of the decade, The History Boys is set in a school in the North of England where a boisterous bunch of bright, funny sixth-form boys are attempting to gain entrance to Oxford and Cambridge whilst fending off the distractions of sport and sex. In Alan Bennett’s much-loved play, staffroom battles and the anarchy of adolescence provide a rich vein of comedy. The History Boys opened in May 2004 at the National Theatre to rave reviews and a sell-out run and went on to become one of their biggest ever hits, winning no less than 30 major awards including both Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play. In 2005, a film was made with the entire original cast, many of whom have subsequently become household names. This will be the first major revival of the play since the original National Theatre production. Alan Bennett is one of the most distinctive voices in British theatre. Wry and tender, his impeccably-observed plays include Talking Heads, Single Spies, Forty Years On, Habeas Corpus, The Madness of George III and The Lady in the Van.

In a dusty church hall, ex-professional dancer Mavis Turner holds her weekly tap class. Every Thursday, in stumbles her well-intentioned but not overly talented troupe – the awkward but hugely enthusiastic Lynne, snooty Vera, streetwise Maxine and the rest of the group – all brought together to dance as if no-one is watching, and hopefully no-one ever will! That’s until they’re invited to perform at a charity gala. As disbelief is replaced by sheer terror, can this bunch of amateurs pull together and put on the performance of a lifetime? Starring Brian Capron, known to millions for his award-winning portrayal of the sinister Richard Hillman in Coronation Street and Anita Harris, one of the brightest singing sensations of the ’60s who famously set pulses racing as Nurse Clarke in Carry On Doctor, this hilariously funny and heart-warming play proves that in dancing as in life, it’s always better to follow your own tune.

Peter Hall’s production of Bedroom Farce, one of Ayckbourn’s best loved works, opened to critical acclaim at the Rose Theatre in Kingston last year and now comes to Milton Keynes Theatre following a successful run in London’s West End.
Peppa lives with her younger brother George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig. Through everyday adventures she plays games, makes new friends and enjoys her favourite activity – jumping in muddy puddles!
Four couples, three bedrooms, two celebrations, one blazing row and an illicit kiss (or two). Alan Ayckbourn’s ingenious comedy shines a brilliant spotlight onto the trials and tribulations of suburban marriage. Trevor and Susannah have a problem relationship which requires urgent attention. What better solution than to talk it over with family and friends? Preferably in their respective bedrooms and ideally in the middle of the night. Inevitably, one problem relationship tends to spark off another. When you have friends like Trevor and Susannah, nobody gets much sleep.

Audiences around the world have been roaring with laughter since Monty Python’s Spamalot (by Eric Idle and John DuPrez) won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005.
‘A performance that meets the Glyndebourne gold standard’ The Independent, La Cenerentola
Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, witch burnings, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. Featuring the hilarious song Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, don’t miss the most infectiously funny musical of the millennium.

CLIFFORD ODETS’ AWARD-WINNING MASTERPIECE BILL KENWRIGHT presents
Martin Shaw & Jenny Seagrove star in
Frank Elgin, once a great theatre star, is down on his luck, but when he is offered a major role by hotshot director Bernie Dodd, he has the chance to make a major comeback. Will Frank regain his confidence and save his turbulent career? Will he be supported in his quest for a second chance by his long-suffering wife? Martin Shaw and Jenny Seagrove are reunited in the roles played by Morgan Freeman and Frances McDormand on Broadway in 2008, and by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in the Oscar-winning film. Shaw’s last UK theatre tour was the record-breaking run of A Man for All Seasons, ‘Martin Shaw is magnificent’ (Daily Express). Perhaps best known for his starring roles in George Gently and the BAFTA award winning series Judge John Deed, he will be joined by his co-star from that hugely popular series, Jenny Seagrove. Seagrove is fresh from critical acclaim in this year’s West End production of A Daughter’s A Daughter, described as ‘the finest performance of her career’ (Daily Telegraph).
