Romeo and Juliet Swan Lake

Photo: V. Guseva as The Black Swan

We are delighted to welcome back Moscow City Ballet, founded in 1988 by former Bolshoi soloist and choreographer Victor Smirnov Golovanov. Both their productions combine sublime musical scores, played by a live orchestra, with the artistry and grace for which Russian ballet is renowned.

6

Prokofiev’s score for Romeo and Juliet inspired lyrical pas de deux, bustling crowd scenes and high drama. Against the backdrop of Renaissance Verona, the tale of the star-crossed teenage lovers unfolds from their first meeting to their untimely, tragic end. With exquisite choreography and Tchaikovsky’s romantic score, Swan Lake is the world’s best-loved ballet. Part fairytale, part tragedy, Prince Siegfried’s love for Odette, the enchanted Swan Queen, builds to a soaring climax in which true love conquers the forces of evil.

MASTER CLASS by Terrence McNally

Stephanie Beacham embarks on the most challenging role of her career as the celebrated diva Maria Callas. Beautiful and talented but tormented and insecure, Maria Callas took the world by storm; the general public were mesmerised as much by her talent as by her glamorous and thrilling private life. Her passionate love affair with Aristotle Onassis gripped the world with an added drama when he left her heart-broken for Jackie Kennedy. Stephanie Beacham bears an extraordinary likeness to Callas. When meeting legendary film director Franco Zefferelli for the first time, who was a good friend of Maria’s, he said, ‘my God you are Maria Callas!’ Stephanie was a leading player at the RSC and National Theatre and appeared in the TV dramas Tenko, Dynasty and The Colbys. In this rich and lavish production, Stephanie plays Maria at a time when her voice and her personal life have fallen apart and she reminisces on the triumphs and tragedies of her life and career. Rich with comedy and searing poignancy the play ‘exposes the passions behind the voice’ Express. 8

‘A beautifully structured comedy’

In an ancient, crumbling mansion, sheltering from the howling winds that tear across the surrounding desolate moorland, two men stumble across a dark and terrifying secret. When a young book dealer, David Filde, is employed to catalogue an impressive library, he finds an incredible array of rare and antiquated books. But as a series of strange and unexplained events conspire to keep him from his work, he realises that if he is to convince his sceptical employer of the mysterious phenomena, they must journey together to the very edge of terror to discover the source of the ghostly night time visitations. Paul Nicholas’ many credits include his role in the BAFTA award winning sitcom, Just Good Friends, and he also enjoyed West End stardom in The Mysterious Mr Love, Catch Me If You Can and Singin’ In The Rain. He is joined by one of TV’s hottest young stars, Charlie Clements, best known as Bradley Branning in EastEnders. Directed by Hugh Wooldridge, this gripping new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ spine-tingling tales of the unexpected will have you on the edge of your seat! 10

★★★★★ Sunday Times, News of the World, Sunday Express, Absolute Radio, Smooth FM, Magic FM After nearly five years of mischief, bad behaviour and political incorrectness, London’s funniest show by far is hitting the road. The Tony Award-winning Avenue Q is an irresistibly charming musical about the lovably hopeless characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues: love, work, relationships and, above all, just how are you supposed to pay the bills with a BA in English? Hilarious and uproariously entertaining, with a terrific batch of songs performed by a cast of hugely talented performers and puppets, Avenue Q is a musical like no other. Directed by David Grindley In the days leading up to the last great German offensive of the First World War, 18-year-old Raleigh joins a besieged company of soldiers in the British trenches at St Quentin. There he finds his new comrades being led by his old school friend Stanhope, but discovers that the man in army greens is much changed from the boy he left behind in cricketing whites. Journey’s End is the Olivier-nominated, Tony and Drama Desk award-winning production directed by David Grindley (Six Degrees of Separation, Crown Matrimonial, The Philanthropist) that won critical acclaim in the West End and on Broadway. R.C.Sheriff’s masterpiece is a must-see of British theatre. Based on the author’s own experience of the Front and life in the trenches, it celebrates humour and courage in the face of certain tragedy.

Asher and Belinda Lang

Parental plans go awry, reputations are shredded and the generation gap seems insurmountable in William Douglas-Home’s delightful romantic comedy. Society couple, Jimmy and Sheila Broadbent, are launching their daughter Jane into society and have their eye on the perfect husband. Jane, however, has other ideas. The round of balls and parties bores her stiff and the last thing she wants is some stuffy young toff with perfect manners. In fact, the chap she really wants appears to be a perfect cad. Horrified parents, a conniving cousin and hot society gossip make this a debutante season to remember. Bursting with witty one liners and sparkling dialogue in the tradition of Noël Coward, this affectionate caricature of 1950s British society brings the glamour and charm of the debutante scene gloriously to life.

What exactly is the eccentric maverick Riley playing at? With a few months of his life remaining, George Riley’s closest friends remember with love, nostalgia or occasional bursts of downright fury, how deeply he has affected their lives in the past. George, though, is plotting one final farewell which threatens to upset all their lives in the future. Alan Ayckbourn’s latest play looks backwards, forwards and sometimes sideways, with wry comic affection, on the lives we lived or might have lived.

Ki ng Lear

An English Touring Theatre & Watford Palace Theatre production

Peopled by some of his most colourful and memorable characters, Dickens’ epic novel has been lovingly adapted for the stage by leading playwright Tanika Gupta. Set in the period the novel was written, we meet Pip - a poor boy living on the banks of the Ganges. Following a terrifying encounter with an escaped convict, Pip is given an unexpected chance to better himself by visiting the reclusive and mysterious English lady, Miss Havisham. In the decaying colonial grandeur of her house, Pip falls in love with Estella and helped by an anonymous benefactor, he moves to the bustling city to pursue his dream of winning Estella’s heart and of becoming part of the educated elite.

An ageing monarch. A kingdom divided. A child’s love rejected. As Lear’s world descends into chaos, all that he once believed is brought into question. One of the greatest works of western literature, King Lear explores the very nature of human existence: love and duty, power and loss, good and evil. With a cast including Ron Cook and Gina McKee, Derek Jacobi takes on one of Shakespeare’s greatest roles in a new collaboration with director Michael Grandage and the creative team behind six-time Tony Award-winning Red. With a reputation for producing first-class theatre, Donmar generated productions have received 35 Olivier Awards, 23 Critics’ Circle Awards, 21 Evening Standard Awards, two South Bank Awards and 20 Tony Awards from ten Broadway productions. 16

This most beloved and widely read Pulitzer Prize winner, now in its 50th year of publication, tells the extraordinary and unforgettable story of life in the American Deep South seen through the inquiring eyes of a child. Brother and sister Jem and Scout Finch are growing up during the 1930s Depression, but their idyllic childhood innocence is shattered by the realisation that bigotry and prejudice rule in their small town of Maycomb, Alabama. When their father Atticus defends a young black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, the whole family become the target of gossip and abuse. Following his critically acclaimed performance in 2007, Duncan Preston is recreating his role as the iconic lawyer Atticus Finch in a new production of this gripping classic.

It is 1845. Branwell Brontë returns home in disgrace. Plagued by alcohol and drug addiction, he has been dismissed from domestic service following an affair with the mistress of the house.

As their brother descends into alcoholism and insanity, bringing chaos to the household, the sisters write. Brontë beautifully evokes the real and imagined worlds of the Brontës, in a production in which their fictional characters come to haunt their creators.
