Supported by the Richmond Theatre Trust, our anniversary celebrations continue with projects that mark the Theatre’s heritage. Pictured are the newly recruited volunteer curators for our Heritage Lottery Funded project: Richmond Theatre 110. They have met with the Richmond Theatre archivists Norman Fenner, Colin Draper and Richard Broadhurst to learn more about the history of Richmond Theatre and to take their first steps in curating the Richmond
Theatre 110 exhibition. Both the exhibition and a specially devised play, written by local young people, will be unveiled in late summer 2010. There are still opportunities to get involved by sharing your memories of Richmond Theatre with us. Either contact Eleanor Packham by email (eleanorpackham@theambassadors.com) or speak to one of our Reminiscence Volunteers, who will be in the Stalls Bar before selected shows. 3

In a dusty church hall, ex-professional dancer Mavis Turner holds her weekly tap class. Every Thursday, in stumbles her well-intentioned but not overly talented troupe - the awkward but hugely enthusiastic Lynne, snooty Vera, streetwise Maxine and the rest of the group - all brought together to dance as if no one is watching, and hopefully no-one ever will! That’s until they're invited to perform at a charity gala. As disbelief is replaced by sheer terror, can this bunch of amateurs pull together and put on the performance of a lifetime? Starring Brian Capron, known to millions for his award-winning portrayal of the sinister Richard Hillman in Coronation Street and Anita Harris, one of the brightest singing sensations of the ’60s who famously set pulses racing as Nurse Clarke in Carry On Doctor, this hilariously funny and heart-warming play proves that in dancing as in life, it’s always better to follow your own tune.

Oscar Wilde
Directed by Jamie Lloyd How pale the Princess is! She is like the shadow of a white rose in a mirror of silver... The brutal power of ancient myth collides with twentieth century decadence in Oscar Wilde’s dazzling verse tragedy. Salome, stepdaughter of King Herod, agrees to perform the mysterious dance of the seven veils but demands in return the head of the King’s most infamous prisoner – John the Baptist. Wilde’s Salome is a lyrical yet shocking piece of storytelling from one of the greatest writers of the last two centuries. It is fragile, savage and shimmeringly beautiful, rendered in exquisite poetry and unforgettable theatrical images. Headlong and Curve Theatre, Leicester, present a vivid contemporary production of this rarely-seen masterpiece. Jamie Lloyd is one of the most acclaimed young directors in British theatre. Recent work includes Polar Bears (Donmar), Piaf (Donmar and West End), Three Days of Rain (West End) and the award-winning The Pride (Royal Court). Headlong is one of the country’s most innovative theatre companies. Under the artistic directorship of Rupert Goold, recent work includes the critically acclaimed productions of Six Characters in Search of an Author (West End) and ENRON (West End/Broadway).

This year we are inviting local people to take part in our 110th anniversary celebrations. We’ve recruited a team of volunteer curators who are mounting an exhibition about the history of the Theatre at the Museum of Richmond that will open in September 2010. A programme of creative workshops for schools and families will accompany the exhibition. We’re also working with a group of local young people who are writing a new play inspired by people’s memories of Richmond Theatre. There will be a performed reading of this exciting new work at 7.30pm on Thursday 5 August. Book your free tickets via Box Office. If you want to know more about it or share your memories, we’d love to hear from you.
