Review for West Side Story Stage Experience 2008
Set in 1929 New York – a war rages between two rival gangsters, Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. Dan has the new and dreaded ‘splurge gun’ and as custard pies fly, Bugsy Malone, an all round nice guy falls for Blousey Brown, a new singer at Fat Sam’s speakeasy. His designs on her are disrupted by the seductive songstress Tallulah who wants Bugsy for herself. With twists, turns and splurge fights galore, the plot unfolds and a showdown at Fat Sam’s follows for the grand finale! This fast-moving and undeniably funny show has been specially adapted from Alan Parker’s hugely popular 1976 film and contains fantastic song and dance routines, including the classics So You Wanna Be A Boxer?, My Name Is Tallulah, Fat Sam’s Grand Slam and many more. Bugsy Malone is making a long overdue return to the Sunderland Empire, having not been staged here for over 30 years! This amateur production is performed by local 9 –25 year olds. Libretto by Alan Parker, Words and Music by Paul Williams. This amateur production is by arrangement with Warner/Chappell Music Limited administrated by Boosey & Hawkes

‘A NEW BREED OF MUSICAL - IT’S BRILLIANT’ BBC NEWSNIGHT
The worldwide smash-hit musical by Queen and Ben Elton comes to Sunderland for two weeks only! Since 2002 over 11 million theatregoers in 17 countries have been thrilled to see this awe-inspiring production. With 24 of Queen’s biggest hits delivered in a show that boasts the scale and spectacle that marked the band’s legendary live performances, this theatrical phenomenon is not to be missed! When it became news some years back that one of Britain’s most phenomenally successful comedy writers, Ben Elton, was teaming up with legends of rock, Queen, for a musical, we all wondered what such a unique collaboration would turn out. Especially when screen icon Robert de Niro became so impressed after attending the original workshop that his company, Tribeca, came on board. The result was a new chapter in theatre history - We Will Rock You a rock ‘theatrical’ which defied all comparisons and has gone on to become a global smash hit.

From producers Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment (Hairspray, High School Musical), the five times Tony® -nominated West End and Broadway hit Sister Act is coming to the Sunderland Empire! When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put into protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be found - a convent! Disguised as a nun she quickly finds fans amongst her fellow ‘sisters’ but makes the wrong impression on the convent’s strict Mother Superior. But when she turns her attention to the church’s off-key choir, helping the nuns to find their true voices and breathing new life into the rundown neighbourhood, her cover could be blown for good. With the gang giving chase, is time running out for Deloris? Or have they underestimated the power of her new found Sisterhood? Based on the smash hit movie of the same name, this fabulous, family-friendly, feel-good show is packed with songs inspired by Motown, funk, soul and disco. More than a million people saw Sister Act at the London Palladium and now, as the habit hits the road in this multi-million pound production, you too can see why musical audiences fell in love with the funniest and funkiest nun on the run, and her heavenly sequinned sisters! www.SisterActTheMusical.com
