Since ATG took over management of the Theatre Royal in 2005 audiences have enjoyed a varied programme of shows and we’re delighted that this has led to what we believe to be a 50-year attendance record. Nearly 190,000 attenders passed through the doors in the past year - meaning more people than ever have been able to enjoy top quality shows in one of Britain’s most beautiful theatres. The good news continues with one of the strongest dance line-ups ever seen at the Theatre Royal. From classical to contemporary, Scottish to Brazilian, street dance to film adaptations, this season’s dance extravaganza is not to be missed. Scottish Ballet end 2009 with their magical winter show The Nutcracker; Off Kilter presents Scottish dance and music as you’ve never seen it before; Go Dance showcases the best local dance talent around; Traces combines contemporary and street dance with unbelievable circus skills; Rambert return after five years with a thrilling and diverse programme; English National Ballet perform the ultimate romantic ballet, Giselle; following two successful years at the Theatre Royal Richard Alston Dance Company are back; Northern Ballet Theatre bring acclaimed novel and film Dangerous Liaisons to life and Companhia de Danca Deborah Colker inject some Latin rhythms with Cruel. World class opera, award-winning drama and a brand new ice show are also on offer as we continue to present outstanding performances in an unbeatable setting. Richard Wingate Chief Executive

COMEDY OF CHANGE TOUR 2010 Rambert Dance Company returns to the Theatre Royal after five years with a thrilling and diverse programme of new dance works. The company’s 22 dancers are among the finest and most versatile in the world and uplifting live music from the Rambert Orchestra superbly enhances the experience. After the universal successes of Constant Speed (2005) and Eternal Light (2008), Artistic Director Mark Baldwin creates a brand new work that will tantalise the senses and stimulate the mind. Created to commemorate 150 years since the publication of Charles Darwin’s momentous On the Origin of Species, The Comedy of Change is set to a specially commissioned score by renowned British composer Julian Anderson and designed by one of Paris’ leading lights of contemporary art, Kader Attia. It skilfully blends dance and science into a stunning, energetic and striking performance. The performance also features two equally breathtaking works: Hush, a new, light-hearted creation by one of Britain’s most popular choreographers, Christopher Bruce, and the irresistible samba-inspired lines and curves of Itzik Galili’s A Linha Curva, featuring one of Rambert’s largest ever casts. 10

This iconic opera tells the story of the love affair between Mimì and the struggling writer Rodolfo. The welcome return of an audience favourite, Tony Award-winning director Stewart Laing’s production presents a traditional tale in a contemporary context – the exciting modern art scene of 21st-century New York. Young artists, living and working in stark studio apartments, turn loft spaces into art galleries. When Rodolfo sees Mimì for the first time, they fall hopelessly in love – but the course of true love rarely runs smoothly. Encompassing dramatic passion and the pain of being young, poor and in love, Puccini’s whirling melodic score moves from revelry to romance as it carries the story toward its tragic conclusion. Young Irish soprano Celine Byrne and French tenor Avi Klemberg, make their Scottish Opera débuts. Nadine Livingston sings Musetta. Scottish Opera Music Director Francesco Corti conducts.

Giselle
Giselle is the ultimate romantic ballet, a tale of innocence, betrayal and the redemptive power of true love. English National Ballet’s traditional staging of this 1841 masterpiece moves from the sunny optimism of Giselle’s idyllic village life to a ghostly, moonlit world of mystery and menace. Giselle is in love with the handsome Duke Albrecht, but when she discovers that he has deceived her she dies of a broken heart. By Giselle’s grave in a mist-wreathed forest glade, vengeful spirits of abandoned brides force men to dance to their death. Giselle returns as a ghost, and her deep love for Albrecht saves him.

THE HISTORY BOYS by Alan Bennett
One of the great plays of the decade, The History Boys is set in a school in the North of England where a boisterous bunch of bright, funny sixth-form boys are attempting to gain entrance to Oxford and Cambridge whilst fending off the distractions of sport and sex. In Alan Bennett’s much-loved play, staffroom battles and the anarchy of adolescence provide a rich vein of comedy. The History Boys opened in May 2004 at the National Theatre to rave reviews and a sell-out run and went on to become one of their biggest ever hits, winning no less than 30 major awards including both Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play. In 2005, a film was made with the entire original cast, many of whom have subsequently become household names. This will be the first major revival of the play since the original National Theatre production. Alan Bennett is one of the most distinctive voices in British theatre. Wry and tender, his impeccably-observed plays include Talking Heads, Single Spies, Forty Years On, Habeas Corpus, The Madness of George III and The Lady in the Van.
