WELCOME

CONTENTS

Our dazzling season of dance continues as we welcome back Matthew Bourne with his iconic and seminal Swan Lake later this year. Brazil’s hottest dance company - Olivier Awardwinning Companhia de Dança Deborah Colker - present their new work Cruel in June, a piece that will leave audiences exhilarated. Northern Ballet Theatre also make a welcome return with their production of Dangerous Liaisons. This acclaimed Leeds-based company, led by Artistic Director David Nixon, subtly combines drama and dance to create a thrilling and unforgettable experience. We are bringing back two outstanding productions to Glasgow. Alan Bennett’s brilliant The History Boys went on to become one of the National Theatre’s biggest ever hits, winning no less than 30 major awards. It plays for just one week in May. In 2008 Calendar Girls sold out before it opened in Glasgow and subsequently triumphed in the West End. Now it’s back for two weeks in August and I strongly urge you to book now. To maximise your visit to the Theatre Royal why not join our Ambassador Friends scheme? For only £25 a year you can take advantage of great ticket discounts, not only at our Glasgow theatres but also at Ambassador Theatre Group venues regionally and in the West End. Additional benefits include reduced bar prices, invitations to meet cast members, exemption from booking fees and priority booking for most shows and much more. With another wonderful season ahead there really is no better time to join. Richard Wingate Chief Executive

Guardian SEE PAGE 27 FOR DETAILS After a long night in his favourite local, the less than sober Mr Brou˘c ek embarks on two fantastical journeys: first to the moon, where he disgusts the inhabitants with his beer-swilling and sausage eating antics and then to the middle of a revolution in 15th-century Prague, where he finds himself in a good deal of trouble... By turns funny, surreal, tender and thrilling, his journey is full of larger than life characters and wonderful portraits and parodies. Janácek’s ˘ music is as varied as Brou˘c ek’s adventures - from the extra-terrestrial sounds of the moon to gorgeous orchestral interludes, bagpipes, an organ, and stirringly patriotic Hussite hymns sung by a 40 strong chorus. The superb cast includes John Graham-Hall, Scottish contralto Frances McCafferty and celebrated Scottish baritone Donald Maxwell.

Scottish Ballet presents a powerful modern retelling of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, created by Dutch National Ballet resident choreographer Krzysztof Pastor. Scottish Ballet dancers, for whom the piece was created, bring these iconic roles to life with emotional intensity and breathtaking performances. TOM CONTI RETURNS IN THE HILARIOUS NEW COMEDY

LIFE-ENHANCING PLAY’ Guardian

Harvey Barrett’s just lost his best friend...it’s time to cash in A new comedy from Bafta Award-winner and author of Rising Damp, Eric Chappell

THE HISTORY BOYS by Alan Bennett

LIKE THIS?

Dave Thursby was a hugely successful television comedian, a national treasure, a devoted husband, a model client for his agent and a staunch friend to his faithful gag writer, Harvey. But when Dave unexpectedly pops his clogs, these close companions are left bereft and some of them may even be out of a job. Unless, of course, the repeats, television specials, biographies and newspaper tell-alls can fill the vacuum. But who is best placed to exploit the legacy? Crammed with great jokes, Tom Conti leads a fantastic cast of performers, in this hilarious and fast-paced comedy from the author of such classic TV series as Rising Damp, Duty Free, Only When I Laugh and Home to Roost. Eric Chappell’s script reflects a lifetime of working with comedians and he understands the ego of comic genius better than most - exposed hilariously in Wife After Death.

One of the great plays of the decade, The History Boys is set in a school in the North of England where a boisterous bunch of bright, funny sixth-form boys are attempting to gain entrance to Oxford and Cambridge whilst fending off the distractions of sport and sex. In Alan Bennett’s much-loved play, staffroom battles and the anarchy of adolescence provide a rich vein of comedy. The History Boys opened in May 2004 at the National Theatre to rave reviews and a sell-out run and went on to become one of their biggest ever hits, winning no less than 30 major awards including both Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play. In 2005, a film was made with the entire original cast, many of whom have subsequently become household names. This will be the first major revival of the play since the original National Theatre production. Alan Bennett is one of the most distinctive voices in British theatre. Wry and tender, his impeccably-observed plays include Talking Heads, Single Spies, Forty Years On, Habeas Corpus, The Madness of George III and The Lady in the Van.

WORLD CLASS DANCE

FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY

RICHARD ALSTON DANCE COMPANY

Starring Ruby Wax and Judith Owen.

Britain’s most musical choreographer returns with another deliciously varied programme. Richard Alston's Overdrive takes up the pulsating rhythm of Terry Riley's music and runs with it to the wire. Alston's light hearted Shuffle It Right features the jazzy songs of Hoagy Carmichael. Peter Hall’s production of Bedroom Farce, one of Ayckbourn’s best loved works, opened to critical acclaim at the Rose Theatre in Kingston last year and now comes to the Theatre Royal following a successful run in London’s West End. Four couples, three bedrooms, two celebrations, one blazing row and an illicit kiss (or two). Alan Ayckbourn’s ingenious comedy shines a brilliant spotlight onto the trials and tribulations of suburban marriage. Trevor and Susannah have a problem relationship which requires urgent attention. What better solution than to talk it over with family and friends? Preferably in their respective bedrooms and ideally in the middle of the night. Inevitably, one problem relationship tends to spark off another. When you have friends like Trevor and Susannah, nobody gets much sleep.
