Following sell out seasons at the National Theatre and on Broadway, The Pitmen Painters comes to the Theatre Royal on its national tour prior to opening in the West End. Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot and directed by Max Roberts, The Pitmen Painters, has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men that do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics.

SEASON 2011/12 MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

The Barber of Seville Gioacchino Rossini

Revival of 2007 production Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Back by popular demand – Sir Thomas Allen’s sell-out Barber is a vivacious and cheerful production, bright with the colours of southern Spain and packed with one fast-paced comic scene after another. With energetic ensembles, high-speed patter and lively coloratura arias, Rossini’s masterpiece is the perfect vehicle for a fantastic ensemble cast, including Ville Rusanen (Guglielmo in 2009’s Cosi fan tutte) and Claire Booth (Dorinda in 2011’s Orlando). Hansel and Gretel

Engelbert Humperdinck New production Sung in English with English supertitles

Based on the Grimms’ fairy tale, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel is both wonderfully unsettling and moving, a story of poverty, magic and triumph over adversity. Director Bill Bankes-Jones takes the opera back to its roots, revealing a 18

macabre tale that’s full of enchantment. Humperdinck’s rich score encompasses everything from luscious Wagnerian-inspired orchestration to touching tunes derived from traditional folk melodies. Irish soprano Ailish Tynan is Gretel, fresh from singing the role at the Royal Opera House. Leah-Marian Jones (Marcellina in 2010’s The Marriage of Figaro) is the Witch. The Rake’s Progress Igor Stravinsky New production Sung in English with English supertitles

A co-production with Turin Opera World-renowned Scottish director David McVicar returns to Scottish Opera to stage his first Rake’s Progress, in partnership with Olivier Award-winning designer John Macfarlane. A colourful tale of debauchery with a bevy of larger-than-life characters, this is the perfect focus for McVicar’s particular brand of incisive storytelling. A 20th century pastiche of late 18th century opera, the music of The Rake’s Progress owes much of its inspiration to Mozart in Stravinsky’s own distinct

take on the neo-classical style. A cast including Scottish Opera favourite Edgaras Montvidas brings the production to life. Siân Edwards conducts. Supported by The Scottish Opera Syndicate

Tosca

Giacomo Puccini Revival of the 1980 production Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Masterfully conceived by a consummate storyteller, Anthony Besch’s much-loved production transports Puccini's powerful drama to Fascist Italy in the 1930s, a setting entirely in tune with the dark intensity of this passionate tale. Puccini’s music, at times heartbreakingly tender, at times powerful and harrowing, captures the sweeping span of this epic story - from the exquisite stillness of a silent dawn in Rome, to the raw drama of Tosca’s final, desperate plight. Susannah Glanville, star of Opera North’s 2009 production, returns to the role of Tosca. Francesco Corti conducts. J.B. PRIESTLEY’S CLASSIC THRILLER

JOURNEY’S END Award-winning West End production of this classic text is supported by a comprehensive education package including post-show talks, insight sessions and workshops. From the Oscar-nominated Director Stephen Daldry comes the magnificent production of J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller - direct from its fourth West End season.

LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT

Hailed as the theatrical event of our generation, this landmark production from the National Theatre has thrilled audiences with its epic and wildly imaginative staging, raw emotion, evocative score, lashing rain and chilling suspense.

Following his critically acclaimed performance in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons at the Apollo Theatre in 2010, David Suchet returns in Eugene O’Neill’s masterpiece. Long Day’s Journey into Night follows the Tyrone family through a mesmerizing day and night, as they battle their demons, their pasts, and one another in four extraordinary personal struggles. The play depicts the riveting events of each family member as they drift further into oblivion and reveals his or her struggle for survival.

When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences.
