A DAZZLING SEASON OF INTERNATI ONAL DANCE AND OPERA ‘Phoenix have never looked so superb’ The Guardian, June 2007
P HOE N I X DA NC E T H E AT R E A first for The Churchill: a night of exhilarating, theatrical dance by world-famous choreographer Javier De Frutos. This exciting triple bill showcases three very distinct, bold works on the theme of Body & Eros, performed by top international contemporary dance artists from Phoenix Dance Theatre. Paseillo is the first stage of the ritual; Los Picadores is a passionate, sexy approach to Stravinsky’s Les Noces; while Nopalitos represents a series of vivid tableaux of life after death, inspired by the Mexican celebration Day of the Dead, where lovers and rivals meet for eternity. Javier De Frutos is celebrated for his evocative and highly-charged choreography and his work both with contemporary dance companies and for musical theatre including Oliver Award-winning choreography for Caberet in London’s West End. He was recently listed among the 100 most influential individuals in the Arts by The Stage. If you like dance grab this rare opportunity to see some of his most thrilling work. Suitable for ages 11+. Contains images of nudity and conflict.

No opera can equal the heartfelt emotion of Puccini’s La Bohème. This stunning production features great arias such as Che gelida manina and the tender love duet O soave fanciulla. Verdi’s La Traviata tells the tale of ill-fated courtesan Violetta and her love for nobleman Alfredo. Violetta’s transition from a colourful life of revelry to one of self-sacrifice is powerfully evoked in this sumptuous, fully-staged production. Puccini’s tragic masterpiece, Madam Butterfly, features some of the most famous arias in all Italian opera and tells the magnificent tale of the doomed love of an American naval lieutenant and his Japanese geisha bride.

Playing Queen Mary Patricia Routledge heads an exceptional cast in this powerful and gripping drama, focusing on the crisis which faces the nation when Edward VIII declares his deep love for Wallis Simpson. Unswayed by the prospect of public scandal, family upheaval and even abdication, he is insistent that he will marry the woman he loves. The King’s determination brings about the first great crisis of the monarchy in the 20th Century, prefiguring the fascinating events portrayed in the recent award-winning 2006 film The Queen. This captivating new production is directed by David Grindley, whose West End and Broadway credits include Journey’s End, National Anthems (with Kevin Spacey), Some Girl(s) (with David Schwimmer) and Abigail’s Party. Beautifully capturing the atmosphere of the Royal Household in the 1930s and with themes as resonant today as seventy years ago, this is a unique opportunity to witness one of our country’s favourite actresses in a touching portrayal of one of the nation’s most enigmatic queens.

Sunday Times
‘Irresistible, full of wit, wisdom and compassion’ Daily Mail
‘A dream come true for the very young’
‘I never dreamed a time would come when a play by Oscar Wilde would overwhelm me with emotion as well as laughter’
The Stage
Evening Standard Remounted production directed by Mark Piper Star cast includes
Michael Praed
Tony Britton
Robert Duncan
Sir Peter Hall’s highly acclaimed West End and Broadway production of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband returns to the stage. Into the fashionable world of London parties, politics and diplomacy comes the worldly and devious Mrs Cheveley. She attempts to blackmail the British Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Sir Robert Chiltern, who she accuses of building a career on dishonour by selling a cabinet secret. The glamorous Kate O’Mara, star of such TV hits as Dynasty and Bad Girls returns to the role of Mrs Cheveley, a part she originally played in the West End. Kate is joined by Dynasty co-star and veteran of the television classic Robin of Sherwood, Michael Praed alongside renowned actor of stage and screen Tony Britton and Robert Duncan, best known as Gus from the Channel Four cult comedy hit Drop the Dead Donkey. Written with the wit and style expected of Wilde, the political intrigue amongst society’s highest ranking figures gives us one of the most entertaining plays in the English language. 20

A DEEPLY MOVING FIRST WORLD WAR STORY
HEY HEY - IT’S THE MONKEES MUSICAL!
The world premiere of the new musical celebrating all things Monkees
Starring James Alexandrou (EastEnders)
by Erich Maria Remarque Adapted for the stage by Robin Kingsland All Quiet on the Western Front follows a group of boys, idealistic and naïve, who join up after an appeal from their fiery school master to fight in the glorious war. Idealism quickly turns to disillusionment as they experience the full horrors of life in the trenches and one by one the boys begin to fall... German schoolboy Paul Baumer is a butterfly collector – a dreamer who is abruptly cast into one of the greatest nightmares in history. But Paul endures, to a great extent due to the deep and loving bonds of comradeship he forges with the other soldiers in the trenches. This moving story shows that just as the brimstone butterfly thrives in the field of battle, somehow the men keep one another’s spirits alive, even amid the horrors of the Great War. Based upon the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and presented by special arrangement with the Estate of Paulette Goddard Remarque.

In the 60s The Monkees were one of the most successful bands in the world, with their own zany television series and a string of number one hits. Four boys audition for a band and unwittingly become stand ins for the most famous group in the world. Once on tour typical Monkees mayhem ensues with singing nuns, a mysterious Russian impresario and an ill-fated love affair - all played out to the soundtrack of The Monkees greatest hits; Last Train to Clarksville, I’m A Believer, I’m Not Your Steppin’ Stone, Daydream Believer, Pleasant Valley Sunday and of course Hey, Hey We’re The Monkees. This musical promises something for everyone: a nostalgic trip down memory lane for those who remember the TV series while the enduring charm of The Monkees hits appeals to a whole new generation.
