PROJECT SYNOPSIS The project, The Graphic Imperative is a creation of a pair of advocacy posters. The name of the project derives from an on-line exhibition of posters, which are divided into three categories: Peace, Social Justice, and the environment, just as the pair of posters created fall under. It is essential to also include a problem, solution, and action for the issue. One poster is type and image while the other is type as image. There is the freedom to choose the specific advocacy group and issue to take on.

02 / THE GRAPHIC IMPERATIVE

EXHIBITION SYNOPSIS With this certain project it is important to operate out of a knowledge base that is established through research. The first research step is therefore, to write a paper that analyzes the points of view of the two main essay- ists for The Graphic Imperative, Heller and Wells. And from there, analyze posters from the on-line exhibition that are in some ways similar to the posters created.

OVERVIEW OF ORGANIZATION

AREAS OF ADVOCACY

Project AWARE (Aquatic World Awareness Responsibility and Education) is a non-profit organization that began in 1989. With the help of founder Alexander Earl and other advocates at PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), the movement spread globally to 180 countries to advocate for two major issues: Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris. Their goal is to conserve underwater environments by keeping the ocean trash free and insuring a thriving population of sea life. Events are set up for scuba divers, whether brand new or professional to take part in the movement. Dive Against Debris is their central event that includes people all around the world participating in dives with the sole purpose of removing trash from the water. Another big event for the cause is the Ocean Action Project. The purpose of the event, or rather contest, is to assist with the funding of an organization that is also part of the movement to protect our oceans. And without the help of AWARE, the organizations would otherwise just be ideas. Each year Project AWARE picks five winners out of the thousands of applicants and creates a beginning for the new non-profit groups. To lastly include, this advocacy group has one main mission statement that sums up who they are: “Protecting our ocean planet – one dive at a time.”

The organization has three areas of advocacy that members focus on. The first is Sharks in Peril. The issue at hand is sharks becoming endangered or extinct due to human involvement. The goal is to save and maintain the population so that scientists can further collect information on the abundant number of different shark species and the predators can help keep the other sea life population balanced. The next issue is Manta Rays at Risk. The goal this time is to regulate fishing, helping the rays stay as part of the ocean, and to fight against international trade of the animal’s gill rakers, which they need to consume food. Lastly and most importantly as part of my personal research, there is the issue at hand of Marine Debris. Due to our everyday waste the ocean is becoming a dump rather than staying clean for the sea life to keep living. The goal is to take part in dives where people are removing what they can and surveying the trash found so that information can spread and persuade others to do the same. Data is accumulated from global dives presenting what type of debris is floating around in the ocean. And to add on, Project AWARE has a Debris Action Month, which for this year it is actually September. It can also be referred to as an awareness month. This period is especially essential for divers or individuals that want to advocate for a cleaner oceanic environment and “stop the ocean’s silent killer” – trash. Here is a more so of a breakdown of the area I will be focusing on to the left of the page.

TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC

MEMBER PORTRAIT

Project AWARE may put a strong emphasis on divers around the world doing their part for the organization. However I believe that there is a more wide range audience that the message can reach out to. The audience really can include young to middle age adults between the age of 20 and 40. Gender does not cause any barrier, meaning males and females can be the target. When it comes to educational level, it would be best to center around college level individuals and beyond. However, there is no income bracket needed for the target audience. It would be ideal for the audience to include travelers or ocean adventurers that have a strong sense for going out and not being confined locally. That being said, the level of expertise in diving can range from an adult that needs their first training or a professional of years in the field.

When it comes to the members of Project AWARE, a lot of them share similar traits and/or hobbies. In order to further understand the organization, I will give a mental picture of a member of my target demographic that would play a role in advocating, donating and taking part in the movement. Out of the millions that could be included in this environmental movement, one in particular is taken under the spotlight. His name is Connor Wiles. He can be found living in California (Los Angeles to be specific) for half of the year with his wife, Jennifer. The other six months are spent at his vacation home in Java, Indonesia, where the beaches are known for their killer waves. To get to know his family a little bit more, his wife Jenny is 34 years old and graduated from UCLA with a master’s degree in Biology. She has not yet conceived a child, partially due to her husband traveling so much. Jenny volunteers at animal shelters when she can to pass time when he is away. Moving onto the main guy, Connor also graduated from UCLA but with a bachelor’s degree in International Studies. HE is at the ripe age of 32. He now gets to see the world as he studies different cultures around the world for a column in his city’s newspaper. He is a sucker for surfing and does plenty of it while in Java. Connor is known by all his family and friends as laid back, down to earth, and spontaneous. He hates to wear suits but loves his board shorts. He has a big group of friends that range in careers and personalities, but some of them also love to surf when they get the time. Even his best friend, an accountant, will put on a wet suit and jump in the water. To add on to the list of vacation spots, Hawaii is also a favorite of Connor’s. However, get him a place that’s close to nature and also close to adventure, like zip lining or white water rafting and he’s in. Connor Wiles is your average 32 year old guy that is just lucky enough to see all parts of the world and that never needs coffee in spark up some energy.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Marine debris accumulating in our oceans all around the globe has been an ongoing problem for the environment. Project AWARE is a non-profit organization fighting to halt the issue and keep the oceans trash free, especially of plastic waste. Plastics are the main issue causing animals to die or get severely injured. 90% of marine debris is made up of plastic. By targeting the message at 20-40 year old college graduates, both male and female, it is a goal to educate them about plastic waste endangering sea species and encourage help and donations for the organization.

SETS OF POSTER TEXT 1) Headline: Pacific or Plastic? Problem: Plastic waste is one of the main problems our oceans face. It is being ingested by sea animals and depleting populations. Solution: Educate yourself about where your plastics are ending up. Action: Learn more at projectaware.org. 2) Headline: Clean Our Coasts. Problem: Every year six million tons of marine debris ends up in our oceans. Solution: Go out and pick up where you can. Action: Become part of the work force for change at projectaware.org. 3) Headline: There’s a Message in a Bottle. Problem: Not every message is positive. 90% of marine debris is plastic from that humans throw away that kills thousands of animals each year. Solution: Help to continue the efforts to remove the waste and save sea life. Action: You can donate online at projectaware.org. 4) Headline: Are you AWARE? Problem: Over 200 species have been tangled in or have ingested plastic waste in our oceans. Solution: Raise awareness for those who cannot speak for themselves. Action: Join the movement at projectawareness.org today. 5) Headline: Plastic is not a Seal’s Toy. Problem: About 60,000 seals get tangled in plastic waste and die each year. Other sea life is affected just as much. Solution: Educate yourself about dumping and start to educate others. Action: To start learning go to projectaware.org.

6) Headline: Sea for Yourself. Problem: In 2009 plastic production reached its highest at 230 tons. Over 6 million of those tons end up in the ocean each year. Solution: Get educated and spread the word about where plastic ends up. Action: For more information go to projectaware.org. 7) Headline: Why So Much Waste? Problem: The ocean doesn’t need any more plastic. Six million tons are already on their way to the sea floor. Solution: Raise funds to remove the waste in the oceans. Action: Give your donation at projectaware.org. 8) Headline: The Ocean’s Worst Enemy: Plastic Problem: Trash keeps accumulating in our oceans causing sea animals to suffer. 90% of it is from plastic waste. Solution: Dive right in and go do your part to clean up. Action: To find local events near you go to projectaware. org. 9) Headline: Stop the Wave of Waste. Problem: Plastic waste is overtaking the oceans today. And sea life is paying for it. Solution: Help those who dive to make a difference. Action: Make a donation at projectaware.org now. 10) Headline: Not Just Another Bottle. Problem: 90% of marine debris comes from plastic waste, such as drinking bottles and could end up tangled around any sea animal. Solution: Educate yourself on how to remove plastics from our oceans. Action: Learn more on projectaware.org.

Phase 04: FINAL PROJECT

(THE REFLECTION)

48 / THE GRAPHIC IMPERATIVE

From a design prospective, I believe that my advocacy group and the issue I chose played a huge role on the choices I made. For instance, my color palette was influenced from the color of marine life and the ocean waters themself. My typeface in the end end up being more round and plump to imitate plastic and the waves of the ocean. By picking a specific type of waste, it helped me to chose imagery that was obvious but that could be manipulated and turned into possible patterns and/or textures. Water bottles are a possible icon that we see when people talk about plastic. The shape is recognizable to the public. Also, when it comes to texture I tried to stay away from the obvious choice of ocean photography or textures of actual water. I instead chose water and charcoal textures that imitated the color and grittyness of a toxic ocean environment. I added a plastic looking texture to seal the connection between the ocean and the type of waste that’s in it.

Moving onto the aspect of becoming an advocate in order to truly make the pair of posters, I believe I now know enough to spread a real message. I’ve always been passionate about protecting the beautiful ocean but with the facts I know after my research, I feel like I want to educate beyond just the posters I made. I think it really helped already being intrigued by my topic but it also made my message stronger. When it comes to if my attitude has changed on the issue of plastic waste, i would say I didn’t realize how much of an issue it is. The translation of type and image to type as image made me think outside of my comfort zone. From pretty much the beginniing, I felt I had enough imagery in mind to make one of my posters. However, I was concerned about making a poster with only type and textures. I thought there were limits to how I could relate my typeface to plastic and the ocean. But after finding out I could have a tiny icon of some sort as well, it made things run better. I feel like my addition of a water bottle as the counter of the A on Waste made a major difference that displayed my issue more. In the end, I feel like not worrying about limits helps in creating intriguing designs.
