NORTHERN WILDS
New additions— and a surprise or two Is there anything not to like about October in the Northern Wilds? As we enter the month, the aspens and birch display their brilliant yellow glory, inviting you take a walk or a drive to enjoy autumn’s final color show. If you’re lucky, your route may pass a bog where the tamaracks shimmer in smoky gold. The beauty is fleeting, typically drifting to the forest floor when a cold wind blows in from the northwest. While some many mourn the finality in the passing of another summer, others relish the loss of foliage for hunting or hiking. It’s a fine, invigorating time to be outdoors. In this issue, we have a story of two bird hunters who consider October their favorite month, because they can spend time afield with their trained hunting dogs. We also have a feature on the Superior Hiking Trail, which has rapidly grown in popularity. Because this month is a great time to wander the backroads in search of the biggest beast in the forest, we’ve included a photo feature about moose. Do you have a question for one of our writers? Or an interesting photo, recipe, or story you’d like to share with Northern Wilds? Please send it to storyideas@northernwilds.com.
We’re excited to introduce two new additions to the magazine. Artist Sam Zimmerman has deep roots on the North Shore and returned last year after spending a couple of decades on the East Coast. Rae Poynter tells his story inside. A direct descen-
dant of the Grand Portage Ojibwe, Sam is a storyteller who uses his paintings to teach Ojibwe traditions. He will be sharing those stories in Northern Wilds. Our other new addition is also about sharing crafting traditions from the North House Folk School. Inside, basket-maker Emily Derke explains how she gathers the willow shoots that she uses in her work. We’ll be sharing more Behind the Craft stories from North House in coming issues. A special treat in this issue is yet another story told in photos. North Shore photographers Paul Sundberg and David Johnson were out calling moose last month when they had a big surprise. Instead of a bull moose, a pack of wolves responded to their call. There’s more to the story, but we won’t spoil it for you. Finally, in a nod to Halloween, naturalist Emily Stone tells us about some of the wild things that go bump in the night. If that isn’t enough, Elle Andra Warner has a true story about flying saucers. Really. Happy October everyone!—Shawn Perich and Amber Pratt

Built in 1892, the Duluth Depot is one of many North Shore locations with the reputation of being haunted. | SUBMITTED
Hauntings in Duluth DULUTH— October is a wonderful time to be on the North Shore. October is the season of crisp fall mornings, the season of sweaters and hot apple ciders, of campfires and the occasional snow flurry. October blesses North Shore visitors each year with colorful leaf displays that can be seen from space, as well as winds that whip up waves to rival those of ocean waters. There is a darker side to October, however, as it is also the season of Halloween; the time of tricks, treats and hauntings. Duluth visitors and residents in search of a spooky Halloween experience, or perhaps a chance encounter with the paranormal, need not look far as there are plenty of scares and hauntings to be had along Superior’s storied shore. One of the most notable haunted places around is the William A. Irvin, a former Lake freighter, or “Laker” as it’s known colloquially, that has been restored and is, in normal times, open to the public as a museum in the Duluth Harbor. First launched in November 21, 1937, the William A. Irvin carried freight and important company guests for U.S. Steel’s Great Lakes Fleet for over 40 years before its “final layup” in 1978. The Irvin was eventually retired due to its small size relative to the newer, more modern freighters in the fleet, some of which had begun measuring upwards of 1,000 feet in length. With such a long and rich history on the Great Lakes, it’s little wonder that this 600foot modern marvel is said to be haunted. According to the website hauntedrooms. com, the most frequent paranormal sight-
ing on the Irvin is that of a “lady in white” who is at times seen up on deck, “dressed in period clothing.” To date, nobody has been able to identify her or determine the origins of her haunting.
up at a wicker baby buggy.” Then, sometime later, another mysterious little girl was caught on film during a wedding where there were no children on the guest list. But, perhaps most intriguing of all, Buehler tells the story of the mysterious hand print that appeared one day in a blocked off area of one of the LSRM locomotives.
In addition to the mysterious lady in white, various other ghost sightings have been reported on the Irvin, including the ghost of a former captain who is “most often seen in the captain’s chair” and is allegedly “angry that the ship remains in dock and is no longer seaworthy.” Normally, the William A. Irvin is opened in October as a haunted ship, where visitors can expect to encounter scares of every sort, culminating “below the freezing waters of Lake Superior in the Maze of Terror.” However, because of COVID-19 the Haunted Ship event has been cancelled for 2020, with plans to reopen in 2021. More information on Duluth’s Haunted Ship can be found at: duluthhauntedship.com. From ships to trains, another nearby historic site with paranormal associations that is open to the public is the Duluth Depot. Built in 1892, the Duluth Union Depot has been a part of Duluth’s story since the beginning. According to the Depot’s website, at its height the Duluth Depot served seven different railroad lines in addition to housing the “railroad offices, a newsstand, barber shop, parcel room and lunch room.” During the early 1900s the Depot was handling some 26 trains a day. While the Depot saw its last train depart in 1969, it has since been renovated and turned into a center of northern art and culture. Today, the Depot is home to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum (LSRM), the St.
About five years ago behind heavy, immovable boards and out of reach from even a tall adult’s arms, there suddenly appeared a child’s hand print in a thick layer of dust. It is still there to this day, visible to visitors who know where to look, sitting just out of reach behind the same immovable barrier, unexplained yet impossible to dismiss.
Most tales of alleged hauntings at the Depot involve unexplained sightings of a little girl. | SUBMITTED Louis County Historical Society, the Duluth Art Institute, the North Shore Scenic Railroad, the Minnesota Ballet, the Arrowhead Chorale, the Duluth Playhouse, and, perhaps, spirits from another dimension. In a series of online videos posted by the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, LSRM executive director Ken Buehler goes into detail on a few of the most notable tales of alleged hauntings, all of which involve unexplained sightings of a little girl. In the first story, a little girl was seen by one of the curators for the St. Louis County Historical Society in the Depot attic “staring

GRAND MARAIS—Some people seem to be born knowing what they want to be when they grow up. Others stumble onto their career paths in other ways. For Cindy Donek of Grand Marais, nursing was something she stumbled onto— literally. Donek retired this year after working for 37 years as a nurse for North Shore Health in Cook County. And her journey to becoming a nurse began with an injury. While she was attending the University of Minnesota-Duluth to study elementary education, she fell and broke her wrist. To treat the injury, she had to be put under, but she had a caring nurse who not only tended to her recovery but sparked a desire to go into the nursing field herself. Donek completed her nursing degree and began what would be nearly 40 years working as a nurse, the majority of it in Grand Marais. Like many rural healthcare organizations, North Shore Health serves a wide geographic area, and as the only hospital and care center in Cook County, it plays a vital role in serving both North Shore residents and visitors alike. The hospital first opened in 1958, and Donek joined the team in 1983. While to some that may not seem like quite so long ago, the developments in healthcare and the changes that have been brought by ever-evolving technology have been astounding. “Healthcare has changed so much with many new developments,” Donek said. “Take heart disease: back when I started if you came in with chest pain, there were medications that would be given but a lot of it was hoping for the best. Stroke care is also much better now. There are treatments to dissolve and remove blood clots, and someone could be airlifted to Duluth where specialists can get at a clot in the brain.” Advances in technology and transportation—specifically the Life Link medical flights—have made Cook County more connected to specialized care and have improved the outcomes of serious illnesses and injuries. Paramedics are now utilized to respond to scenes and to be onboard for Life Link or ambulance transfers, something that used to be handled by nurses. “Paramedics are heaven-sent,” Donek said. Even the evolution of attitudes toward healthcare have changed over the last four decades, sometimes drastically. Donek recalls that when she first began at North Shore Health, there was only one female doctor, and that she was treated differently than the male doctors, with some even refusing to see her—something that has become unthinkable in 2020. Through the many changes, Donek’s career as a nurse was at once challenging and fulfilling. She said working in death and dying care stands out when looking back on her work; being able to be there for the patient and also to work with families as they navigated a new loss was poignant and rewarding work. Other notable moments—from caring for children her own children’s age to getting flowers

Cindy Donek recently retired this year after working for 37 years as a nurse for North Shore Health in Cook County. | SUBMITTED from people she helped—made nursing a memorable and touching career. Overall, Donek said that what made working for North Shore Health so positive was the people. “Our clinic doctors are wonderful to work with in a hospital setting,” she said. “You work as a team and they really listen. The first hospital I worked for was so different—there was definitely a hierarchy and you were treated very differently as a nurse. But here in such a small setting you know everyone, and everyone works together so well.” Now, Donek is enjoying retirement and she is looking forward to having more time for her passions such as baking, canning, and taking care of her grand-dogs. But she is also interested to continue watching the new developments in healthcare and at the Cook County hospital and how things continue to change and grow in the years to come. —Rae Poynter
Golden Eagle Lodge – A family legacy GUNFLINT TRAIL—“Unspoiled and Unforgettable,” Golden Eagle Lodge has been a part of the Baumann family legacy for nearly half a century. Now, with Zach Baumann and his wife Ruth Wagner’s recent purchase of the business from Zach’s parents, Dan and Teresa, Golden Eagle Lodge is set to continue thriving under the ownership of its next generation of Baumann’s. What started as a “men’s only” resort back in 1945, Golden Eagle Lodge has since been developed by the Baumann’s into one of the premier family resorts along the Gunflint Trail. In addition to secluded lodging and camping options that “embrace” the natural privacy of the wilderness, Golden Eagle Lodge offers seasonal events at its nature center, boat rentals in everything from canoes and kayaks to pontoons and fishing boats, as well as a plethora of maintained hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country ski trails. “Golden Eagle Lodge was a dead resort when my grandparents bought it in 1976,” says Zach, “having only the main lodge building, four cabins, and no clientele.” In addition to the many challenges associated with renovating and rebuilding a 1940s era resort, the Baumann family initially had to all live together in the main lodge building, with “the Baumann Boys” (Zach’s dad and uncles) all crammed together in the attic. “In the early 80s,” continues Zach, “my dad helped expand things by replacing one cabin and building six new ones. One of the original cabins burned down in the late 80s and another cabin was replaced in 1999.” “Today,” continues Zach, “all of our buildings are built early 80s and newer with the exception of the Lodge and Cabin 1, both of which were built sometime in the mid-40s. Our campground was added in 1999.” Zach was involved in the family business from a young age. With the exception of the four years he spent at college in Duluth acquiring a degree in business administration with a major in marketing, Zach has lived his whole life at Golden Eagle Lodge and “loved every moment” of life on the Trail. Ruth Wagner’s family had been vacationing at Golden Eagle Lodge since before she was born, a tradition that they continued throughout her childhood. Because of this she grew up becoming friends with all of the Baumann kids, and as an adult would take “additional fall camping trips to Golden Eagle Lodge to visit with them during what was typically a quieter time of year.” It was after one of these annual trips in 2016 that Ruth and Zach started dating. They were married soon after in October of 2017. It was also during this time that Zach and Ruth started working towards the goal of taking over the family business. “I left my job managing a large dairy farm in January 2016,” says Ruth, who has a degree in Dairy Science and Agricultural Business, “at which point Zach and I took over the day-to-day management of the resort.” “We spent the next several years learning from Dan and Teresa and working out a purchase agreement,” continues

more eco-friendly,” continues Ruth. “We cannot wait to debut the Central Gunflint Trail System’s trails on December 19, opening weekend.”
Ruth and Zach have wasted no time in “filling the shoes” of the previous Baumann generations, expanding upon their outfitting capabilities with additional light-weight canoes, and expressing a number of plans to renovate and reinvest in the Lodge, “keeping cabins well-maintained and regularly updated,” according to Ruth.
While Ruth and Zach have plenty of new ideas for the lodge now that they are in charge, both unequivocally acknowledge the importance of maintaining the “Golden Eagle Experience” as it has been since the first generation of Baumann’s took over in the 70s.
Last year, Zach laid out a new snowshoe trail that will take folks through a beautiful section of red, white, and jack pines that have just started to grow after a prescribed burn in 2000. The new winter hike also passes above and below “a really cool rock face that is usually riddled with icicles.” In addition to the new snowshoe trail, Zach and Ruth recently purchased a new 2021 Piston Bully 100 that will allow them to provide an even better cross-country ski experience for their winter guests and visitors. “This is a huge upgrade from our current PB130,” says Ruth, “which is over 30 years old. We will now be able to provide a wider skate lane and continuous tilling, which will allow us to groom in a far greater variety of conditions.” “The new machine is quieter, more powerful, and much
This means no TV’s in rooms, limited Wi-Fi, and above all else, upholding the integrity of the resort by keeping things personal. “We believe in maintaining an atmosphere of solitude,” says Ruth, “and as such, we see no reason to expand.” In agreeing with Ruth, Zach adds that they don’t plan on expanding to become a larger entity because “that’s just not who we are.” “Once you start to grow to a size where you have a difficult time making personal connections with your guests,” says Zach, “or lose the ability to add personal touches to each cabin, you change who you are as a resort. We don’t want to change who we are.” For more information on Golden Eagle Lodge, visit: golden-eagle.com.—Eric Weicht

time grouse hunts are much better suited to a man with a young family. Both dogs, he points out, are members of the family. They live in the house and play with the kids. During the off-season, both hunter and dogs get plenty of outdoor workouts to keep them in shape. Viehbeck also devotes time to training and has learned specific methods for training a pointer with the help of the breeder from whom he acquired Birch. “It’s a learning game,” he says. “I have to slow down my movement in the bush and let the dog work the cover. A setter hunts more slowly than a Lab.” Another hunter with a soft spot for English setters is Mike Bartz of Grand Marais. He grew up around springer spaniels. Later, he took up waterfowl hunting and became a fan of Labs. Next came a Drahthaar, or German wire-haired pointer, and he learned the German training system. Now a fan of grouse and woodcock hunting, he’s had English setters for 12 years, including his current companion, Bean. “Getting a point and then walking up and flushing the bird is pretty magical,” Bartz says.

Life is better with a bird dog NORTH SHORE— Autumn is the sweetest season for folks who enjoy the company of a well-trained bird dog. The ruffed grouse, called the “King of Gamebirds,” is common throughout the Northern Wilds. The forests also harbor the diminutive and long-billed woodcock, with some nesting here and others passing through during the migration. Finding either species in dense cover is a task best accomplished with the assistance of a trained hunting dog. Just what that dog may be is up to the hunter. Those who primarily hunt for the upland birds described above often prefer pointing breeds, which locate birds and then go into a pointing stance to keep the bird hunkered on the ground until a hunter can
walk up, flush it and then shoot it on the wing. Hunters who love pointers will say this is the epitome of bird hunting.
that the company of a dog so enhances bird hunting that many hunters can’t imagine going afield without one.
Other hunters, who may also head into marshes in pursuit of ducks and geese, prefer dogs that are willing and able to retrieve downed birds on the ground or in water. Retrievers can be trained to perform remarkable feats where they rely on hand or whistle signals from the hunter to locate distant downed birds. They also find and flush upland birds such as grouse and pheasants. Folks who hunt with retrievers will tell you this is the epitome of bird hunting.
“I get as much satisfaction from watching the dog work as I do from pulling the trigger,” says Davis Viehbeck of Thunder Bay.
While their methods differ, both groups of hunters are correct. The bottom line is

Viehbeck currently has two hunting companions: Tig, a female British Labrador retriever and Birch, a male English setter. He started with Tig at a point in life when he had more time to rise before dawn in order to hunt waterfowl. He was introduced to English setters during a grouse hunt with friends a couple of years ago and became intrigued with pointing breeds. Along came Birch and a subsequent discovery that day-
Hunting with a dog offers another benefit. All gamebirds, including the colorful ringnecked pheasant, are remarkably well camouflaged. It can be difficult for a hunter to find a downed bird. Hunting dogs use their powerful scenting capabilities to find dead or injured birds. Most breeds will retrieve the bird to the hunter. Since Bartz has owned varied breeds for different hunting purposes, he’s learned perhaps more than the average hunter about dog training. He’s attended training clinics and, when he had a Drahthaar, trained in a group. He’s concluded that no one training method is better than any other. All methods are enjoyable, too. “Training is a lot of fun,” Bartz says. “It extends your season. I really enjoy getting out in spring to work the dog.” In the Northern Wilds, the bird hunting season lasts for just a few autumn weeks before the arrival of snow and cold effectively brings it to a close. It’s a time treasured by hunters, but one could argue that it is difficult to justify the year-round

New Path of the Paddle overview map launched NEEBING— Funding from Destination Northern Ontario has enabled The Path of the Paddle Association to complete an overview map that covers 1,100 km of a canoe, hiking and cycling route. The map is now on sale through its website as well at two local outlets. The Path of the Paddle operates this 1,100 km section of The Great Trail, Canada’s national trail from Fort William Historical Park to Whiteshell Provincial Park in Manitoba, through both the wilds and the communities of Northwestern Ontario. Volunteers keep the trail alive and it was through a large volunteer effort that the map was created. Board chair, Clara Butikofer, said that the map will serve as a tool for those planning their trips to the region. “This map has been created for the purpose of trip planning and route overview. During this time of the pandemic, when everyone is advised to stay safe and stay close to home, there is no better resource available for planning adventures into the wilderness of Northwestern Ontario,” she said. The map includes symbols for waterfalls, portages, camp sites and points of interest. It is priced at $12.95 and available online at pathofthepaddleassociation.com/shop or in Thunder Bay at Wilderness Supply and Chaltrek Work and Play Outdoors. Butikofer extended the organization’s thanks to Destination Northern Ontario as the project partner, Steve Chapman of mapmakers.ca and the Path of the Paddle volunteers. Destination Northern Ontario is one of 13 not-for-profit regional tourism organizations funded by the Ontario Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. It is the largest tourism region in geography, the second largest in expenditure and the only region that includes sub-regions. OHMs are used in Minnesota for a variety of recreational activities. The most common are dirt bikes or trail bikes. They are used on motocross tracks on private property, and for flat track racing, off-road racing and noncompetition trail riding. There are also specialty OHMs called trials bikes, which are
used for similar activities as BMX bicycles. Other OHMs can include dual-sport motorcycles which are highway licensed and capable of traveling both on and off paved roads. The DNR and ARMCA work together to manage OHM trails on state lands and within the grant-in-aid program. The master plan will focus on recreational trail use, but additional types of OHM use will also be reviewed. The final plan will assist the DNR and its partners to manage trail use and development strategically. This will include trail maintenance, environmental protection, and users’ interests in higher levels of difficulty on current or proposed trails, skills building areas, and training areas. More information can be found on the project website: upoutside.com.
Fatal accidents involving OHVs reach 10-year high ST. PAUL— As of Sept. 3, 19 people in Minnesota have died in OHV (off-highway vehicle) accidents this year. By comparison, the average number of fatalities annually for the past decade is 18. The number of registered OHVs— which includes all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), off-highway motorcycles and off-road vehicles—continues to rise in Minnesota. The total in 2019 was 329,275. ATVs are the most popular type, and so far, this year there are nearly 24,000 new registrations. As they work to keep the trails safe, conservation officers across the state report increased numbers of interactions with OHV riders. Among the most common issues they’re encountering are people riding too fast, riding where they’re not supposed to ride, and failing to obey traffic signs. In addition, there’s been a concerning trend of riders under the age of 18 not wearing helmets.
OHV riders should keep the following in mind before hitting the trail: • Ride only on designated trails. Stay to the right and travel at a safe speed. • Ride sober. • Wear protective gear including goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, gloves and a DOT-approved helmet. • Avoid riding on paved roads except to cross when done safely and permitted by law. • Kids need active supervision— OHVs aren’t toys. • Complete a safety course. For more information about riding safely, see: mndnr.gov/ohv/atvsafety.html.
No ESA listing for moose BLOOMINGTON— After a thorough review of the best available scientific and commercial information, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that the U.S. population of the northwestern subspecies of moose is not a distinct population segment (DPS) and does not warrant listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The subspecies is currently found in Minnesota, North Dakota and Isle Royale National Park in Michigan. The agency received a petition from Honor the Earth and the Center for Biological Diversity to list the subspecies as a DPS and protect it under the ESA in 2015. In 2016, the Service published a finding indicating that the petition warranted further review. The Service considered many factors in this listing determination including reproductive behavior, moose harvest regulations, habitat management and the moose’s conservation status in the U.S. and Canada. After a comprehensive analysis, the Service determined that the northwestern subspecies of moose is stable and there is no information indicating a physical, physiological, ecological or behavioral difference between the U.S. and Canadian populations. Therefore, the agency determined that the subspecies is not a DPS and does not warrant ESA protection. “Moose are the largest members of the deer family and play an integral role in human and environmental health,” said Lori Nordstrom, assistant regional director for ecological services in the Service’s Great Lakes Region. “The Service remains committed to conserving moose, and other native species, for generations to come.”

Currently, there are four subspecies of moose in North mation. America. Moose were likely extirpated from the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan and the State of Wisconsin. Recent reintroductions in Michigan were of the eastern subspecies, which likely spread into Wisconsin. The northwestern subspecies of moose historically occurred in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. To read the Service’s finding on the northwestern moose, visit: fws.gov/midwest.

Points North A busy summer strains North Shore’s nature “Those are the days where we see more garbage through the park. For some reason, we’re finding masks everywhere,” he says. “People are making new trails. We’ve had to put up barricades to keep them on the trail.”
By Shawn Perich
It’s been a crazy year along the North Shore by any measure. The coronavirus pandemic has dominated our corner of the world (indeed, nearly all of the world) since March. First came the closure of nonessential businesses, a statewide stay-athome order and a panic buy on toilet paper. The Canadian border closed to everything but commerce. Weeks later, businesses gradually, cautiously reopened while we all learned to wash our hands, stay six feet apart and wear masks. And through it all, the visitors just kept coming. There was still snow on the ground when we began hearing the state parks were being overwhelmed by visitors on weekends. All park facilities were closed, but folks could still access the park grounds. Many did, often without bothering to stop at the self-service station to purchase a required state park pass. Local anglers observed that they had never seen the steelhead rivers as busy as they were this spring. Like a snowball rolling downhill, visitor use of the North Shore’s natural resources continued growing as spring turned into summer. So did the abuse of those resources. “It’s been a busy summer,” says state conservation officer Mary Manning. “Folks who would normally travel to distant destinations are choosing to explore the North Shore as an alternative. Some are not doing well when they get here. Either they don’t know what they are doing or they don’t care.” Speaking of the latter, she said that someone intentionally left a huge mess in a public outhouse for a state worker to clean up. She was also approached at a local post office by someone who said they’ve been finding baby diapers everywhere, a phenomenon she’s also observed along with toilet paper and baby wipes. Dumping trash at boat landings and other public places has been common, too. Another problem has been folks camping at North Shore locations where camping isn’t allowed. Retailer Jack Stone, owner of Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply in Grand Marais, observes there are “lots of rookies this year. People with no experience in the woods.” While sales of outdoor products are strong, his staff tries to educate customers how to safely and responsibly use their purchases. “Sales have been gangbusters,” Stone 14

The park’s famed High Falls on the Pigeon River has become a well-known destination. Novitsky says this year it has attracted people from all over the country and from diverse cultural backgrounds. Some visitors arrived in passenger vans that contained large family groups. Over a dozen people might be in one van, with two or three vans travelling together. Often the families would picnic at the park and the sheer size of the groups stressed the park facilities and staff. Overflowing parking lots have been a common sight at state parks and trailheads along the North Shore this summer as an onslaught of visitors pose new challenges for natural resource managers. | AMBER PRATT said, “but that’s part of the problem. People don’t know what they are buying.” People are purchasing kayaks and paddle boards almost on impulse, without asking questions of the sales staff or trying them out. The rental business has been good, too, but there’s been an uptick of damaged equipment. “They’ll bring back the canoe after you’re closed, so you don’t see the damage until the next day,” he said. To help mitigate the public pooping problem, Stone Harbor has been giving away Biffy Bags, which are portable toilets that allow you to pack out your waste. They’ve also been recommending canoe camping how-to books by canoeing author Cliff Jacobson. “We’re trying to educate people who have no experience,” he said. The U.S. Forest Service, which manages the Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, is trying to do the same. Kate Legner, acting public affairs officer, said the wilderness and the surrounding forest are seeing higher than usual visitation this year. While the increased interest in the outdoors is welcome, an increase in irresponsible recreational use is not. Normally, visitors to the BWCAW are required to watch an informational video when they pick up their wilderness permit. This year, permits are issued remotely, so visitors can choose not to watch it. Apparently, some are not, because the Forest Service has received so many reports of trash and damage to campsites that it set up a tip line for people to file reports. The email address is sm.ss. sus-tipline@usda.gov. One canoer who witnessed damage firsthand is Anthony Huonder of Minneapolis, who made three BWCAW trips this summer. A professional potter, he says the cancellation of art fairs this summer allowed him to spend more time in the wilderness.
NORTHERN WILDS
Although he is a veteran paddler, his unexpected free time is an example of why there was a rise in outdoor recreation this year. Raised to respect nature, he was surprised to encounter people in the wilderness who did not. “There were hatchet marks in trees near every campsite, even on old cedars and white pines,” he says. “Why?” At some campsites, live trees were cut down and left lying on the ground or cut and stacked as firewood. At one campsite, trees were cut down in an apparent attempt to improve the view of the lake. While he stressed that he encountered plenty of people who were friendly and considerate, he was surprised by others who seemed, at the least, inconsiderate of others. “There was a lot of loudness. People would be shouting just to hear themselves. At night you could hear barking dogs and loud radios. It was like a playground for rowdiness,” he says. At the end of the line, Grand Portage State Park on the Canadian Border, park manager Travis Novitsky says summer visitor numbers were 50 to 60 percent higher than average, reaching upwards of 800 per day on some weekends. On weekdays, the parking lot for cars was full before noon. On weekends, the adjacent wayside for large trucks filled up as well. On some days, the parking lot would remain full until 8 p.m.
Shawn Perich’s POINTS NORTH online
Most disappointing to Novitsky was vandalism at the nearby Mt. Josephine wayside, which is maintained by the park staff. Someone ripped the signs off the biffy doors and smashed them. More discouraging was the profane and obscene graffiti covering everything, including a large rock face. “There’s no way to know who did it,” he says. Lake Superior offers a lot of elbow room, but noticeably more anglers were launching boats and going fishing. Area fisheries manager Cory Goldsworthy says Minnesota DNR creel clerks were reporting a lot more folks were out, but he won’t know just how many more until the data is complied later this year. The clerks also reported many anglers were misidentifying fish they caught, mistaking wild steelhead (which must be released to protect the population) for salmon, which are legal to keep. He suspects the creel data will also show an increase in the overall catch of all species. He doesn’t think a higher catch will harm the fishery, especially if it is just one year. “We look at all mortality: natural, sea lamprey predation, angling and commercial fishing,” he says. “Our management strategy has a contingency plan in place so we can make adjustments to the harvest if need be.” Lake Superior is so large, that it is unlikely the extra fishing pressure will make much of a difference to fish populations. But other North Shore natural resources are finite and often fragile. We need to recognize that those natural resources are what makes the North Shore special and treat them with respect.

Boundary Waters becomes a Dark Sky Sanctuary DULUTH—The entirety of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) gained Dark Sky Sanctuary status this summer after initial discussions began back in 2008. This makes this area on the Superior National Forest the first-certified Minnesota site and first federally designated wilderness site. The BWCAW is the 13th location in the world to gain this unique title and at 1,098,000 acres in size, it is the largest. “We are excited to receive the Dark Skies Sanctuary designation for the BWCAW and are committed to preserving dark sky opportunities for future generations,” said Superior National Forest supervisor Connie Cummins. The International Dark Sky Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 with the goal of reducing light pollution and protecting night skies for the present and into the future. A Dark Sky Sanctuary is “public or private land that has an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is protected for its scientific, natural, or educational value, its cultural heritage and/or public enjoyment.” According to the International Dark Sky Association, “Experiencing the night sky provides perspective, inspiration,
and leads us to reflect on our humanity and place in the universe. The history of scientific discovery and even human curiosity itself is indebted to the natural night sky.” This designation confirms what people in the area have enjoyed for thousands of years. Dark skies, starry nights and astonishing northern lights displays have been part of the experience long before the area was designated Wilderness with the passage of the 1964 Wilderness Act and 1978 BWCA Wilderness Act, subsequent legislation. “Conservation and preservation laws, policy and guidance all lead to the protection of the night skies for scientific, natural, educational, cultural, and public enjoyment values, which are all part of protecting wilderness character,” said BWCAW program manager Ann Schwaller. According to a 2016 National Geographic article, 80 percent of Americans cannot view the Milky Way anymore due to light pollution. Researchers worry that humans around the globe are losing access to the scientific, philosophical and spiritual benefits of appreciating a dark sky blanketed by stars.

Things that go
Bump in the night BY EMILY STONE There’s a lot more darkness out there these days. During long nights you might hear some mysterious sounds. Use this guide to help you figure out what goes bump (or yowl, screech, or snort) in the night. While owls are one of the most common critters we hear at night, they can also be eerily silent. | JAMES MOSHER
RED FOXES
OWLS Owls sing duets with their mates, they clack their beaks in irritation at each other, they call to warn away rivals, and their hoots might send shivers down your spine, too. The deep-voiced pattern of notes from a Great Horned Owl sounds like “Who’s awake? Meee, tooo…” Barred owls sing more loudly, and say “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you alllll….?” They also make a monkey-like ruckus, and young barred owls give off terrifying shrieks when they beg for food. The robin-sized Northern Saw-whet owl makes a repetitive series of whistled notes, like the back-up beep for a cartoon truck. While owls are one of the most com-
mon critters we hear at night, they can also be eerily silent. Imagine an owl gliding stealthily through a dark forest and plunging talons-first for a tiny mouse. How do they do that? Broad wings reduce the need to flap loudly. On the trailing edge of those wings, a flexible fringe breaks down noisy air turbulence. On the top of the wing, a forest of tiny, downy feathers dampens sound even more. Why is silent flight important enough to warrant all of these adaptations? It isn’t just so the mouse doesn’t hear the owl; it’s so the owl can hear the mouse. Owls’ super sharp hearing is their best hunting skill. They can even pinpoint the rustles of a mouse in complete darkness and swoop down for the kill.
One of the most terrifying sounds that could ever pierce through a dark forest is the scream of a fox. But, just like with wolves, what’s scary to us may be sexy to other foxes. The hoarse, frantic call is used most frequently by female foxes, called vixens, when they are looking for love. Although the sound is blood-curdling, the result is a litter of fuzzy, adorable fox pups, born in early spring. Male foxes also scream occasionally, so it likely serves more than just that purpose.

PORCUPINES Imagine what a frustrated zombie might sound like as it tries to push open a door that says “pull.” That’s the sound of a grunting porcupine. You might hear this sound coming from the outhouse, or the underside of your car, or the front porch of your cabin as a porcupine gnaws on something covered in salt. The incessant grunting of a porcupine is actually a happy sound, often made in the presence of food. Throughout the year, porcupines
eat a shifting diet of tree bark, evergreen needles, buds, twigs, leaves, and weeds, based on the type of food that is most nutritious at that particular moment. One thing that their plantbased diet always lacks is salt, which is why they are attracted to the human items containing salt from urine, our hands, or road deicers. With an armor of 30,000 sharp quills to protect them, porcupines can afford to make happy sounds while they eat.

WHITE-TAILED DEER
Speaking of a wolf’s prey…the most common sound you’ll hear from a white-tailed deer after dark is their snort, also called a blow, and it’s usually accompanied by forceful foot stamping. These sounds are meant to let something dangerous—like you or a wolf—know that they’ve been spotted. Without the element of surprise, the hunter will realize they don’t have a chance and move on to a different quarry. Once a deer has snorted at you, any little twitch will send it dashing silently away.
RACCOONS
They can chirp, whinny, growl, chatter, screech, hiss, whimper, purr and grunt. Of all the animals making noise in the woods at night, raccoons seem to cause the most trouble. They fight noisily in the wee hours, steal food from hungry campers, damage orchards, steal chickens and munch selfishly on sweet corn. Plus, they carry a variety of diseases. If anything is going to go bump in the night, it’s most likely your trash can falling to the nimble, hand-like paws of nature’s own masked bandit. Do these chatty critters have you scared? Knowledge is your best defense. Learn more about them—and the dark world they inhabit—at the “Mysteries of the Night” exhibit at the Cable Natural History Museum, in Cable, Wisc. Later this fall you’ll be able to visit the exhibit online as well, at: cablemuseum.org.
WOLVES

FLYING SQUIRRELS
From the dark tree canopy comes a bedlam of squeaky chirps, as if an army of tiny gremlins is about to drop on your head. With the fur of a mammal and the skills of a bird, it’s no wonder that flying squirrels also sound like a combination of the two. Technically, flying squirrels can only glide, using a furred membrane that stretches between their wrists to their ankles. While they eat far more mushrooms than your average squirrel (and play an important role in dispersing fungal spores) they are just as likely to swoop in to your bird feeder for an easy feast. That’s when you can break out the ultraviolet flashlight. Switch it on high, and they will fluoresce hot pink. Seriously!
Have you ever heard the bone-chilling voice of a lone wolf howling at the full moon? Well, probably not. For one, wolves don’t actually howl at the moon. Yes, they tip their muzzles skyward in order to project their song over longer distances—up to 10 miles on the open tundra—but it has nothing to do with the moon. Scientists think this old story came about because YOU are more likely to be outside— and therefore able to hear wolves—on a full moon night. Also, lone wolves rarely howl. They are vulnerable without a pack, and would rather keep their whereabouts a secret. But while howling wolves may make our hair stand on end, the true purpose is often not sinister. Scientists have found that wolves use howling to communicate among their pack, to rally the group for a new activity, and just to reinforce relationships among friends. Wolves howl more during the leadup to breeding season when hormones are running high, and larger males can use their deeper voices to attract the ladies. Even though a wolf’s howl is iconic, their keen sense of smell is probably more important for communication. Wolves use their noses—and a big chunk of their brains—to learn about the identity, health, and activities of friends, enemies, and dinner. To detect prey across huge landscapes, they smell crushed vegetation and also “odor rafts” that include the bacteria on skin cells that falls off their prey. While howling wolves may make our hair stand on end, the true purpose is often not sinister. | JOHN MCFAUL NORTHERN WILDS

The Superior Hiking Trail
Lives up to its name, attracts new fans By Annie Nelson
Starting in September, the palette of the northwoods starts to pop, as in this meadow overlooking 5-mile Rock in Lake Superior near Grand Marais. | ANNIE NELSON The Superior Hiking Trail is named after Lake Superior, but could easily earn that name because of how high the trail ranks among hikers. “Our trailheads are overflowing on weekends right now,” said Jaron Cramer, development and communications director at the Superior Hiking Trail Association. “It has been inching toward that in recent years, but the increased use this year with COVID-19 is noticeable. “Now more than ever, we know how important trails like this are, getting out into the woods and moving your body, getting those moments of awe,” Cramer said. The trail offers plenty of opportunities for awe: 300 miles of river cascades, waterfalls, wildlife, and panoramic views of Lake Superior. In October, the forest along the trail reaches its peak fall color change. “The last week of September, this 3-4 week window starts when the maples, oak, and aspen turn. The palette of the landscape starts to pop,” Cramer said. The trail offers a full gamut of hiking experiences from 1-2-hour day hikes with beautiful views, to section hiking for the weekend, to living a full month on trail while hiking the entire 300-miles, known as thru-hiking. The trail association estimates 50,000-100,000 people hike the trail every year. In 2019, the trail officially became part of the North Country National Scenic Trail, which runs 4,600 miles from
North Dakota to Vermont. Stretching from the Wisconsin state border to the Canadian border, at its southern end, the trail runs through Duluth, routing through forested city parks that feel almost as wild as the forest further north. Between Duluth and Two Harbors is the flattest topography of the trail, but once the trail reaches Castle Danger, it starts running the ridges of the North Shore Highlands, 1.1 billion years old, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The trail visits each state park along the North Shore, and crosses into the Sawtooth Mountains at Carlton Peak, passing by Britton Peak, Oberg Mountain, Leveaux Mountain and many more before reaching Grand Marais. Over the length of the trail, the elevation changes about 41,000 feet, according to the trail association. This year, hikers can participate in the 2020 Summit Challenge of hiking seven of the trail’s many peaks by October 31. North of Grand Marais the terrain offers some of the best river gorge and waterfall territory, as well as a close-up look at how dramatically beavers can impact a forest. The trail ends at the 270 Degree Overlook of the Canadian border. In his new book The Superior Hiking Trail Story, Rudi Hargesheimer explains how the trail was dreamed into existence by a coalition of people.

RESOURCES
U.S. Forest Service Rangers based out of Tofte built a previous “Superior Trail” in 1980, which ran from Britton Peak to Oberg Mountain and now forms part of the current route. Those rangers dreamed of extending the trail along the entire North Shore. State Park employees, local residents, North Shore resort owners and Minnesota DNR park administrators were also dreaming of building a trail along the shore, but navigating the different land management jurisdictions proved difficult.
To plan your hike on the Superior Hiking Trail, here are the best resources. Most of the maps, books and guides mentioned here are available in the associations online trail store at shop.superiorhiking.org.
Trail guides • Superior Hiking Trail Association website, superiorhiking.org. Start with the “Plan Your Adventure,” “Know Before You Go,” “Leave No Trace,” and “Trail Conditions” pages.
Tofte ranger Leland Schaar enrolled in Clemson University Recreation Short Course and “did a research paper on how to model it after the Appalachian Trail—to get different jurisdictions to work together,” Hargesheimer said. “John Chell loved it. He worked for the DNR as the regional parks administrator out of Grand Rapids. He, more than anyone, pushed for it.”

“Tom sat down with just topographic maps, no computers. He’d make check marks, saying ‘This might be a good overlook. We need to connect those two dots.’ He’d go out in the woods with a compass, pink ribbon and just do it. The original 205-mile route was 90 percent his effort. You could call him the father of the trail,” Hargesheimer said.
• Keith Myrmel’s Superior Hiking Trail Maps, kjmyrmel.webs.com, $34.00 (only available at Myrmel’s website) • Superior Hiking Trail Association 6-Map Set, $6 (these maps do not have the most updated route based on updated GPS mapping, but are sufficient)
Hargesheimer was a member of the trail association’s board and its president much of the time Peterson was making his reports on the trail’s progress. “He’d been out by Jackson Lake and he came to the board and said, ‘I think we’ve gone to the highest point of the trail.’ I went out the next day and hiked it, following the pink flags. The top of Rosebush Ridge was a tangle of thorn bushes. It was a hot humid day and I only had running shorts on. I was pushing through those bushes and got totally ripped up. I was a bloody mess at the end.

River cascades abound on the Superior Hiking Trail, like this cascade on the Poplar River near Lutsen, Minn. | ANNIE NELSON ly for the rain, he said. His tent collapsed during the night under the heavy rain. “Everything got soaked. But when I woke up, the sun was shining, and it was so gorgeous. That day taught me that even when things suck, you can persevere and still have a good time. It taught me how to be a thru-hiker.”
“Later, when we made the first whole trail map, I named it Rosebush Ridge. Ha! All those thorns up there turned out to be raspberries,” Hargesheimer said. For 30 years, staff and volunteers scouted, bushwhacked, sawed, and grubbed the trail into existence, some volunteering 6070 hours a week like the famed Ken Oelkers, until completing the final two miles to the Wisconsin border in 2017.
The trail is beautiful but rugged and can surprise first-time hikers with how physically challenging the hiking can be. “Expect rocks, roots and mud,” Hargesheimer said. “Wear decent footwear.”
“In the 1980s, backpacking was a pretty minor sport in Minnesota,” Hargesheimer said. “The Border Route Trail was built, and Crosby Manitou State Park existed, but that was pretty much it. The Kekekabic Trail was overgrown. When they built the Superior Hiking Trail, it added a lot more miles to the mix.”

Day hikers fell in love with the trail first. With trailheads every 3-11 miles, hopping on and off the trail for day trips is easy. “It’s popularity grew leaps and bounds mostly from the day hikers, but the people who want to thru-hike the whole thing, of course that became a big deal,” Hargesheimer said.

Support the trail “It’s so exciting that we’re seeing more people discover the Superior Hiking Trail and enjoy it, but that means it takes more time and resources to care for it,” said Superior Hiking Trail Association development and communications director, Jaron Cramer. “The trail didn’t just emerge on its own. It’s thanks to thousands of supporters, thousands of volunteer hours, and the collective good will, energy, care and love that helps keep it in place,” Cramer said. “I would love for people when they are out there to enjoy it, and when they’re done, take a moment to advocate for and protect our public trails and lands.” For more information on how to volunteer or donate to the trail visit the Superior Hiking Trail Association website, superiorhiking.org.
“I tell everyone it is rugged, and it is beautiful, and there is something cool to see around every corner,” Banker said.

Sam Zimmerman: The Art of Story CREATIVE SPACE: By Rae Poynter In the summer of 2020, a beautiful public art installation appeared on some of the most commonplace of items in the city of Grand Marais: the city’s trash barrels had been transformed from ordinary-looking bins to being adorned with bright colors and paintings of fish. These paintings, with names in both English and Ojibwe, were the work of Ojibwe artist Sam Zimmerman. Originally from Grand Portage, Zimmerman is a painter and school administrator based in Duluth. While his life has taken him in many different directions, two years ago he felt a longing for home and a desire to return to painting that led him to where he is today: living, painting and storytelling on the shores of Lake Superior. Zimmerman’s journey to becoming a full-time artist began when he was attending school on the East Coast as a pre-law student. By the end of his sophomore year he had completed a handful of paintings and knew that pursuing law was not what he wanted to do. And so, he approached the chair of the art department with his paintings and said that he was interested in becoming an art major. The department chair saw his work and said he wanted Sam in the studio the next week. “My father always told me to follow my spirit,” he said. “There’s a fear in doing that, and you wonder if it’s the right decision or if it will pay the bills. But it’s something we all need to be reminded of, that you need to follow your spirit.” Zimmerman finished his undergraduate degree in anthropology and art restoration and moved to New York City to pursue his art career. While there he worked at a summer camp for children with disabilities, an experience that instilled in him a love for working with children. He quickly went from being a working artist to being a middle school art teacher for children with disabilities. For 20 years he worked in education, eventually becoming a school superintendent. However, living on the East Coast meant being far from family, and he began to feel the pull to follow his roots back toward his home of northern Minnesota. Around the same time, he took a trip to Alaska, where he was immersed in the beautiful Indigenous art from the area. He realized that not only did he miss painting, but that he had never painted the stories from his heritage. In the summer of 2018, he picked up a paintbrush for the first time, and in July of 2019 made the move from the East Coast to Duluth. Zimmerman describes the time from beginning to paint again to the present as somewhat of a whirlwind: he went from
Sam Zimmerman stands next to one of his painted trash barrels in Grand Marais. | SUBMITTED a hiatus as a working artist to completing 120 paintings in two years and having his art featured in multiple gallery exhibitions since then. But through all the rapid changes, capturing stories continually lies at the heart of what he does. “In general, painting is about capturing an emotion and expression, but for me, painting is about telling a story,” he said. “So much of Indigenous wisdom is passed on in story, and so much of our culture revolves around an elder telling you the story. Yet you won’t ever find a book with all of them, because they have to be lived in real time. When the Elders are gone, the stories are gone, and that’s one of the reasons that I’m being so prolific in my painting now.” Zimmerman’s style borrows from the Woodlands style of art pioneered by Norval Morrisseau, but also uniquely incorporates his own personal background and training in realism. Each piece captures a particular story from his heritage, and is laced with rich symbolism and hidden detail. For instance, one of his paintings honors the sturgeon and has seven trees for the Seven Grandfather Teachings, as well as 153 dots on the sturgeon to represent the age of the oldest known Lake Superior sturgeon; another painting honors the pike as a predator, and has agate-like swirls on the fins. Some of the symbolism is more personal; one painting has the number of stars that correspond with how old he was when he completed the painting, and another has a tree for each of his siblings.
For Sam Zimmerman, painting is about telling a story. This piece is titled, “Healing Song of Lake Superior.” | SAM ZIMMERMAN When asked how long it takes to complete a painting, Zimmerman said it varies from a few days to a month; he often has a few paintings going on at a time, and will work on each in turn depending on where his inspiration takes him. “I can feel it in my hands when I’m on the right track, and there’s a certain energy around a piece when it’s going well,” he said. Since he began, the response to his work has been strong. As mentioned earlier, Zimmerman has had three gallery shows since moving back to Minnesota, and became the first Native artist in Duluth to have a solo show at a traditionally whiteowned gallery. He has also connected with people who have reached out to him to have their own stories told through art, often finding special and even serendipitous connections. “I’ve had multiple people who have come up to me since I started painting who have said that there’s a reason that you’re doing what you are, when you are,” he said. In addition to his paintings, many will also recognize Zimmerman’s work from the public art project that he did painting trash barrels for the city of Grand Marais. His idea was to have barrels that are both
visually striking—so people would be encouraged to use them—and to also educate people about the Ojibwe community and culture. He chose to paint fish since the responsible handling of trash is a way to care for the waters; he painted six, well-known fish species, including two that are threatened, each with the English and Ojibwe names. Now there are six more painted barrels being added, with three animals and three birds: a fitting reminder to how our actions affect the wildlife on land, sea and air. Beginning this month, Zimmerman will be writing a column, titled “Following the Ancestors’ Steps,” for Northern Wilds. Each month he will share a different painting as well as the story behind that painting. Readers will get to see his art and learn about the stories, traditions and hidden gems behind each piece. In addition to his art, Zimmerman is a special education director in Duluth. His plan is to keep using his gifts in art and in education to inspire and to teach. “I love my culture and my heritage. In the world that we’re living in right now, I want to be someone who can be a catalyst for beauty and joy as much as I possibly can.” Sam Zimmerman’s work can be found online on Instagram and Facebook under the name Crane Superior.

BEHIND THE CRAFT: By Emily Derke
As I scurry around in the ditch, carefully organizing piles of sticks, I stop to give a friendly wave as a car slows down to see what’s going on. Occasionally someone will ask “what-cha picking?” or more assumptive questions like “are you picking berries?” “No. Willow,” I responded. I use willow for weaving baskets. There are many species of wild growing willow in Minnesota. A lot of people immediately think of the weeping willow tree when they hear the word “willow.” The weeping willow is related, but not what I use for making baskets. The stuff I’m talking about grows more like a large shrub, with new growth shoots reaching upwards, not hanging downward like the tree. It’s often found in low, wetter areas, though it can be nearly anywhere. A few of my favorite spots to look are roadsides and powerline cuts. To harvest, willow can be cut with a pruning shear right down to the ground. The next year it will send up straight branchless shoots, perfect for basketry. The second year of growth it will start to get branchy, which is not desirable for basketmaking. So, I either need to harvest from patches that I have tended and cut back every fall, or find a place where the ditches or power lines were mowed down the year before in order to get the nicest first year shoots. Some wild willows work great for weaving. Others can be brittle, short and stubby, or their bark can rub off easily. Variety and growing conditions can affect the way plants grow, so I just try things and see how they work. Over time you can get to know an area and learn which wild willows will work well for basketry. Willow has also been cultivated for basketry for a very long time, and there are numerous varieties that have been developed and used. I grow some basketry

I’ve always liked the idea of going out to collect materials to make something useful, with nothing but a few tools and a little know-how. I tend to keep an eye on the wild willow wherever I am, even when I have access to the cultivated sticks. Late fall is harvest time. At this point, the leaves have fallen to the ground and the surrounding landscape can be quite brown and gray. That makes it especially easy to spot first year willow shoots that are long and straight and good for basketry. They can be shades of lime green, brilliant red, orange and bright yellow. Sticks are collected and kept with like species, and then sorted and bundled into groups of similar length and thickness. Then they are dried out and can be stored indefinitely until ready for use. When it’s time to weave, the proper sticks are selected and soaked for nearly a week in the water, followed by some time “mellowing” as

they are wrapped up in a tarp. The whole soaking process can take two weeks. How many sticks does it take to make a basket? I’ve heard people say “around 100.” That is likely true, depending on what kind of basket is being made. But it is important to have the right sticks for the project at hand, so it’s always good to collect way more than is needed for a single basket, so that the best sticks can be used for each part of the basket. Baskets have been made for most of human history all over the world, and practically speaking, making baskets is no longer a real necessity. There is a wide variety of containers that one could find to hold their fish catch, or their freshly picked green beans. butonce you start appreciating the work and process of harvesting materials to make something useful, the need for baskets just keeps growing. Emily Derke is a basket maker in the Artisan Development program at North House Folk School, where traditional craft is taught on the shore of Lake Superior.

Why You Should Get the Flu Vaccine By Amy Schmidt Autumn is in full swing—leaves are turning to amber and ruby, evening comes early, frost threatens to nip ripening tomatoes, and your doctor asks if you’re planning to get a flu shot. She asks you every autumn, but this time, the reasons to get a vaccine are more compelling and critical than they ever have been. From October 1, 2019 to April 4, 2020, the CDC estimates that in the U.S. alone there were 39-56 million flu illnesses. It was a typical year, one the medical community (sadly) has come to expect. Influenza stresses the medical system and its resources every flu season. This year, there’s a new resource hog—Covid-19. The 2020-21 flu season is going to make its grand entrance into a system that is already maxed. This is a problem. The good news? You can help. Let’s consider two scenarios: You wake up sick. But what are you sick with? Covid-19 or Influenza? There’s only one way to know for sure—get tested. So, you drag yourself down to the clinic or hospital. They collect your sample, you go home
and quarantine until the test results come back. Ideally, you feel better quickly, your (negative) results come back quickly and you continue on with life. However, in another scenario, the results are delayed or come back inconclusive and you have to test again, and wait again, and quarantine again. Worse yet, your results come back negative but you still don’t feel good. Maybe you actually have influenza but you didn’t test for that so now you have go back to the clinic, test for influenza, wait again and by this time, you’ve infected your neighbor who came to check on you after you were assured you didn’t have Covid-19. Your flu results come back negative but the sacrifice was great, on both you and the medical system. The easiest way to reduce your chances of scenario two is to get the flu vaccine. Why? Because if you get the flu shot, you are less likely to get Influenza which means you are less likely to get flu-like symptoms that could or could not be Covid-19. When more people get the flu vaccine, fewer people end up with flu/COVID-like symptoms. This means fewer people will require COVID testing, and, ultimately,
Getting the flu vaccine this year has never been more worthwhile. | STOCK medical care. This saves resources for the people that need them the most. Getting the flu vaccine has never been more worthwhile. Yes, you protect yourself and those around you from the flu. But, you also protect medical resources that are in precious and limited supply. Not to mention, you protect your sanity. Who would want the mind-game of scenario two? It bears mentioning that the flu vaccine is not 100 percent (cdc.gov/flu/vaccines-work/vaccineeffect.htm), that not everyone should get the vaccine (babies under six months of age and people with
severe allergies to any of the ingredients of the vaccine) and that some people should check with their doctor before receiving it. But the bottom line is that the flu vaccine is a powerful way for us to protect ourselves from life-threatening illnesses, and by keeping ourselves well, protect others that are more vulnerable. Northern Trails Fall Steelhead Basics By Gord Ellis
When the days shorten and the leaves start to change, many anglers put their rods and reels away for the season. However, autumn is a wonderful time of year to fish, and it features some of the most interesting opportunities of the year. One of the most amazing—and overlooked—is fall steelhead fishing. Steelhead is just another name for rainbow trout that live in Lake Superior, but spawn in coastal rivers in the spring. Most steelhead anglers focus on late April, and early May, as the majority of the steelhead population is in the rivers and streams. However, fall brings a “false run” of steelhead that are not in the rivers to spawn, but to feed on salmon eggs and small fish. These steelhead are bright silver, and are twice the fighters the spring steelhead are. I’ve had fall rainbows repeatedly jump after being hooked, sometimes doing mid-air cartwheels trying to shake the hook. They are dynamite on a stick. Here are some tips to catch the fall steelhead of Ontario’s North Shore.
Medium Rivers and Large Creeks Fall steelhead will come up even the smallest creeks, but they require a decent flow of water. In the autumn, smaller creeks often are nearly dry, so anglers are best to focus on rivers with more water. Because fall steelhead are feeding primarily on dropped eggs from salmon, it’s hard to go wrong using salmon roe bags, or imitations such as colored beads. The most efficient way to fish these baits is via a float. The float is fixed to the line, and then split shot is used to weigh down the hook and bait. Generally, a #6 or #8 octopus hook is best, as they are sharp and the fine wire hooks the hard mouth of a steelhead well. Drift the float with the current, and let the line free spool as it drifts. When the float dips under, set the hook. Another option is to cast hardware such as spoons or spinners. Some of my favorites include the Little Cleo, Krocodile and Mepps Aglia #3. One of my fondest fall steelhead memories took place nearly three decades ago on a river east of Thunder Bay in early October. It was a glorious fall morning, and the sun was out, taking the chill from the air. The river was running strong after a night of rain and it just looked really fishy. I tossed a Mepps into

Just as it was approaching the shore, a bright streak roared from the pool, grabbed the spinner and bolted off. Before I knew what was happening the fish was midair and twisting like a banshee. The image of the steelhead, the color of a new nickel, glistening in the sunlight, has stayed with me for years. I did land that fish, which was about 6 pounds and fat from gobbling up chinook eggs. If you like to fly fish, fall steelhead are the perfect quarry. Not only will they take a fly, but they will have you in the backing in no time. Drifting and swinging wet flies are the preferred technique, generally on a sink tip line. Some of the best flies are on the large side, and flashy. The Egg Sucking Leech pattern is a good one, as it includes the red/orange of an egg, with a long black body. Flashier flies like the Deceiver with red, green and yellow also catch fall steelhead. More traditional egg pattern flies also work well, as do old school yarn flies. Fall
Large Rivers Steelhead fishing in the larger rivers, such as the Nipigon, Michipicoten and Steel—to name a few—is a slightly different thing than in the smaller tributaries. For starters, in rivers where you can launch a boat, trolling becomes an option. In the Nipigon, for instance, many fall steelhead are caught trolling diving crankbaits like the Rapala #9 Shad Rap, Rapala Deep Diving Husky Jerk or Berkley Flicker Shad. Trolling a diving plug keeps the lure in the strike zone longer, and allows the angler to cover a lot of water. Strikes on trolled lures are also very aggressive. As often as not, the fish is in the air before the strike registers on the rod. Any narrows or pool tail out is a prime spot.
rig. The sinkers bounce lightly along the bottom as the angler drifts in the current with the boat. Strikes on roe are usually a bit more subtle, so watch the line for changes. Shore bound anglers on larger rivers can chuck hardware and cover a lot of water. Heavier bodied spoons such as the Little Cleo, Krocodile, Williams Ridgeback and Acme Tor-P-Do will allow you to cheat the wind and get a long cast. Retrieve the spoon fast enough that it’s off bottom, but slow enough that the lure is down in the water column. Finding this middle ground will mean a snag or two. That’s the cost of doing business. Using a slip float and roe is an effective way to cover water from shore. Use enough weight to cock the float quickly and adjust the leader length to have the bait just off bottom. Finding this sweet spot usually requires a bit of experimentation, but the results can be worth the effort. Fall steelhead are a thrilling fish to catch and are pursued at the most wondrous time of the year. Give them a go this fall and experience the magic.
Another option in large rivers when using a boat or canoe is to drift spawn. A roe bag or treated chunk of salmon egg skein is weighted with split shot on a small dropper NORTHERN WILDS

Friendship and Hospitality in Germany’s Black Forest By Rae Poynter As someone who has done quite a bit of traveling, I always struggle with the question about why I choose to travel. Among travel’s many benefits, it can be difficult to sum up the seemingly endless reasons that could ultimately draw me to it. But despite all the good that can come from traveling, what I cherish the most is the opportunity to build connections and make friends with people from around the world, people who not only show impeccable kindness, but who inspire me to become an even better person myself. Amidst our extensive European backpacking venture, my husband and I found ourselves in southern Germany in mid-October. We were traveling toward the Black Forest for the most interesting wedding present we had received: a visit to a small village called Haslach im Kinzigtal (Haslach for short). It was a village I had never heard of before; certainly not one to top the list of must-see places in Europe. But some friends of ours had fallen in love with the area many years ago, so much so that at one point they had even started their own tour business taking Americans to visit Haslach. So when this couple gifted us a stay in the village that meant so much to them, we were thrilled to accept. 32

The Beautiful Black Forest
It was a bright autumn day when we stepped off the train in Haslach. It was a small town, only around 7,000 people, nestled in the Kinzig River valley among the rolling hills of the Black Forest. Much more green than black (and tinged with October gold at our arrival), we would hear more than one local puzzle over why this region was dubbed the Black Forest. The ultimate answer was the ancient Romans found the thick conifers dark and mysterious. While the locals may have regarded the backdrop of their everyday lives as anything but mysterious, even I had to appreciate the evocative, fairytale charm that lay in the name, and the childlike curiosity it conjured up. The village of Haslach itself definitely has a fairytale charm to it. Germany is a diverse country, with bustling modern cities and slower country life. Most of the “traditional” German villages that tourists envision (complete with cuckoo clocks and polka music) can be found in southern Germany in regions like Bavaria and the Black Forest. While not stereotypical, stepping into Haslach felt like going back in time, with cobblestone streets, half-timbered

where we found an adorable yellow inn set against the backdrop of the expansive forest. It was a welcome sight after many nights spent either in hostels or our tent.
Toward the end of our stay, we’d heard that a local neighborhood was having a small festival, an annual event that they put on both as a celebration and a fundraiser for the community. We walked into the main building where the festival was to take place, a simple hall set with long rows of folding chairs, only to find that the event was winding down and the volunteers were beginning to clean up. But before we could back away, the host approached us and asked where we were from. Upon learning that we had come to the area from so far away, she presented us with steaming plates of sausage and french fries and two mugs of beer. We sat down at the last table standing, and as we began our meal, a pair of young girls approached our table. They exchanged nervous glances with each other, and then one of them shyly held out a felted purple heart.
We settled in and learned more about the area, including its more sobering history as the location for a concentration camp during World War II. Today, a memorial and a path of remembrance sits at the site of the former camp to commemorate the lives tragically lost there. Nearby the memorial is a lookout tower that was built in 2014, and offers expansive views of the rolling hills, river valley, and village of Haslach below.
A Kind and Simple Life
The pace of life in Haslach was slow and relaxed, and our time there brought us across the paths of people who had chosen to forgo a busy urban life in exchange for simple living, tight-knit communities, and natural beauty that could be found in the Black Forest. The family who owned the gasthaus we were staying in were friends of our friends who had gifted us our stay in Haslach. Having heard that we would be arriving, they met us the night of our arrival and offered to take us out to dinner. We learned that the inn they owned had been in their

The restaurant they took us to was an organic farm-to-table restaurant high in the hills above Haslach. The owner of the restaurant was another memorable character: a middle-aged Londoner, he decided one day that he had had enough of the corporate world and fast-paced London lifestyle. So one morning he decided to pack up, move to the Black Forest, and begin his dream of opening a restaurant that
want to go back to his former lifestyle. His answer? “Never.” Additionally, we had the chance to visit a traditional farm in the neighboring countryside. The family who ran the farm were also friends of our friends, and they were more than willing to put aside their work and give us a glimpse into their daily lives of living off the land. They gave us a tour of their home and barn, which were, in fact, combined into one: in traditional Black Forest style, homesteads were built so that half of the build-

ing was designated for people, and half for animals. This helped conserve more heat than having a separate barn for livestock. At the farm, the family made their own meats, bread, milk, butter, and cider, and every week hosted people for a home-cooked meal from their freshest ingredients. We got to greet a calf who had just been born that morning, sample fresh milk, and learn how to make schnapps, a local tradition among farming families in the Black Forest. Looking back, I sometimes wonder if meeting these local families that enjoyed a simple life in a naturally beautiful area had any influence on our later decision to move to the rural North Shore. It’s difficult to pinpoint an exact catalyst, but I wouldn’t be surprised if being among this community had some effect, at least subconsciously, on the kind of life we valued and wanted to live ourselves.
“We want to thank you for coming to our festival,” the girl said. I took the little heart, obviously homemade, and thanked them for the welcome they had shown. They blushed and hurried back to help their parents clean up, leaving us with the simplest and best souvenir we’d come across on all our travels. The people of Haslach showed us a genuine kindness and hospitality that outshone any we’d receive in Europe’s more mainstream destinations. Our time there showed us the goodness present in these small communities off the beaten track. And even in the midst of the stunning Black Forest, it was the people of Haslach who would make the most lasting impression. Today the felted purple heart hangs in our kitchen in Grand Marais, another small town in a beautiful forest that’s filled with even more amazing people. We’ve hosted many people in that kitchen, including over a hundred travelers. That favorite souvenir reminds us of the incredible kindness we were shown as travelers to a small town, and of our mission now to pay it forward.

Name (Sturgeon) Carries the Grandfather Teachings In August, I was sitting along the shore north of Grand Marais watching the sunset and the colors of the clouds captivated me with their fiery shades of pinks, reds and oranges. I had been working on this piece to honor the wisdom carried by Name (Sturgeon) throughout their lives in Gitchi Gami (Lake Superior). While researching this piece, I discovered that the oldest recorded Name had been 152 years
old. This piece of information had me thinking about how wise one would be at the end of that lifespan. My Grandfather was one of the wisest people I have ever met, which led me to think about the importance of the Grandfather teachings of Indigenous people. The Name in this painting has a total of 152 individual white fins reflected in the dots throughout his body, in honor of the
oldest recorded Lake Sturgeon. The zhingwaak (pine trees) in his body, reflect the seven Grandfather teachings of humility, bravery, honesty, wisdom, truth, respect and finally, love. With a lifespan of more than a century, in this piece, the Name swims in the still waters of Gitchi Gami having received the lessons of these teachings. In this time of collective stress, this piece not only serves as a reminder of the
natural beauty around all of us, but also to hold onto to the lessons shared from our elders, especially the Grandfather teachings. Sam Zimmerman is a Grand Portage Ojibwe direct descendant who continues the storytelling traditions.

NORTHERN SKY OCTOBER 2020 By Deane Morrison, MN STARWATCH
October begins and ends with a full moon. The first rises the evening of the 1st, only about three hours past the exact moment of fullness. Following it into the eastern sky is Mars, now too bright to be washed out by any lunar luster. Over to the south, brilliant Jupiter and dimmer Saturn are drawing nearer, en route to a close encounter in December. The night of the 2nd, Mars and the waning moon rise and travel the night sky together. On the 13th, Earth laps Mars in the orbital race, passing a mere 38.6 million miles from the red planet. That night Mars shines down from the constellation Pisces, where no bright stars will be close enough to rival its splendor. Above and slightly west of Mars, the Great Square of Pegasus is now in prime viewing position. Look below it on a moonless night and see if you can find the ringlike Circlet of Pisces. outside about 90 minutes before sunrise to compare Venus with Mars, the beacon low in the west. October bids farewell with Halloween, an astronomically based holiday. To the ancient Celts, it was one of four cross-quarter days falling midway between an equinox and a solstice. At sundown on October 31st, all the evil spirits that had been cooped up since May Day were released to wreak havoc on humankind. People lit lanterns in gourds to ward them off and left food offerings to appease them—traditions that survive in jack o’ lanterns and trick-or-treating. October’s second, or “blue,” moon shines the night of the 30th-31st. On Halloween night, a still lovely moon rises in time to lend a fitting atmosphere to most trick-or-treating. The University of Minnesota’s public viewings of the night sky at its Duluth and Twin Cities campuses have been curtailed due to the pandemic. Strange Tales The Secret Construction of Flying Saucers By Elle AndraWarner
In the 1950s at the height of the Cold War, did the Canadian and U.S. governments really spend millions of dollars to develop and build a ‘flying saucer’ that could soar to 100,000 feet, reach speeds of 1,500 mph, have vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) and a maximum range of 1,000 miles?
[ABOVE] The Avrocar S/N 58-7055
(marked AV-7055) was one of two built at a cost of $10 million (U.S.) for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army. | WIKIMEDIA [LEFT] The U.S. Army was experimenting with developing a fleet of “Flying Jeep” tactical combat aircraft and became interested in the Avrocar with its VTOL capability. | WIKIMEDIA
Well, yes, they did. Leading the projects was a highly-regarded British-born aircraft designer, John “Jack” Carver Meadows Frost, who in 1952 was working in Toronto for A. V. Roe Canada Limited (Avro), a Canadian plane maker based in Malton airport (now Toronto’s Pearson International Airport). Frost was on the team that developed the high-speed interceptor jet, the CF-100 Canuck, the only fighter jet ever designed and built entirely in Canada that went into large-scale production. But Frost—who was fascinated by reports of unidentified flying objects (UFO) shaped like flying saucers—had an additional goal: to design and build a circular supersonic aircraft shaped like a flying saucer. After researching about 200 sightings, he narrowed the incidents to two which couldn’t be explained. He did wonder though if the Germans, with their advanced aeronautical technology, might have been experimenting with an aircraft shaped like a saucer. Moving forward with his goal, he designed, built and successfully tested a model of a disc-shaped VTOL aircraft. It was enough to convince Avro management to support Frost’s project, codenamed Project Y, to develop a full-size mock-up flying saucer prototype. Avro and the Canadian government provided the initial funding. Security was tight, but news of Avro’s secret ‘flying saucer’ project leaked out. An article titled “Takes Off Straight Up... Malton ‘flying saucer’ to do 1,500 mph” in the Toronto Star on February 11, 1953, reported about “a wooden mock-up” that was behind “tarpaulin screens in Avro Canada’s experimental hangar at Malton, to which only holders of ‘super-security’ cards are permitted…No project of this kind is known to be under development elsewhere in the Western world.” After Avro estimated development costs for the flying-saucer aircraft to be above $100 million, the Canadian government walked away from financially supporting the project. However, the U.S. Air Force was interested and provided funding, later joined by the U.S. Army. In his book Avrocar: Canada’s Flying Saucer, Canadian author
The first prototype Avrocar VZ-9AV has been at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at WrightPatterson AFB, Ohio since 2007. | ALVIN TRUSTY Bill Zuk writes that from 1955-1959 Frost and his design team focused on development of the V2-9AV “Avrocar” as part of the USAF Weapons Systems 606A project and later, as a prototype for the U.S. Army’s proposed ‘Flying Jeep” series of vehicles to be known as Avromobiles. So, how was this supersonic flying-saucer going to fly? Included in the U.S. documents about the Avrocar declassified in 2001 by the USAF was a 117-page report detailing Frost’s design. It said the proposed craft would feature a “central turbine, called a turborotor, powered by six turbojet engines.” The air sucked in by the turborotor would be directed through the body of the aircraft and the “exhaust exited from the vents placed along the circumference of the aluminum saucer; vanes and shutters directed the exhaust toward the ground to hover.” Another document reported that Frost predicted the saucer could travel at Mach 4 with “a ceiling of over 100,000 feet.” Two prototypes of the Avrocar were developed for the USAF and U.S. Army. The first Avrocar (S/N #58-7055) was constructed in 1958 and after completing a 32hour static rig test at Avro in Malton, was
The first prototype Avrocaris shown being readied at the Avro Canada factory in Malton, Ontario for a rollout in May 1959. | WIKIMEDIA sent to California’s NASA Ames for series of wind tunnel for testing in April 1960 and April 1961. The second Avrocar (S/N #59-4975) was constructed in 1959 and underwent about 75 hours in a test flying program in Malton. Its first free-flight test was on November 12, 1959, followed by further tests in January 1960 and July 1960-1961. Testing did reveal deficiencies in stability and performance. While the first prototype Avrocar was never flown, the second Avrocar flew only three feet above ground, displayed uncontrollable pitch and roll motions (“hubcapping”), and could only reach a speed of 35 mph. Frost and Avro redesigned the Avrocar with modifications that might have solved the problems but it was too late. As Zuk reports, “In December 1961, the Avrocar and related VTOL programs were officially completed as the U.S. military rejected
new company redesigns and halted any further research effort.” And on April 30, 1962, A. V Roe Canada Limited (Avro)—which had already been dealt a blow with the sudden cancellation by the Canadian government of its delta-winged CF-105 Arrow “Avro Arrow” supersonic fighter jet program—ceased to exist. Two years later Frost was in New Zealand, designing aircraft and after retirement, taught university students before his death at age 63 in 1979. (Years later, Frost’s design concept was used in modern aircraft like the F-35B Lightning II and F-22 Raptor.) The good news is that both the two Avrocar prototypes still exist. Since 2007, the first prototype Avrocar has been at the National Museum of the USAF at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, while the second Avrocar is at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

A Surprise Visit by Paul Sundberg
David Johnson and I headed up the Gunflint Trail to spend the morning calling moose. It was a calm morning, which made for perfect moose calling. Sounds carried into the distance echoing across the landscape. I used my mouth to imitate the sound of a love-sick cow moose, which is amplified by a fiberglass cone handmade in Alaska. When used properly, it sounds amazingly like a cow moose. After calling for 10 minutes we heard what at first sounded like a loon about a quarter-mile to the north. After a couple more calls we realized that it was the howling of a wolf. Each call brought the wolf closer. After about 15 minutes, the howling came from directly in front within the pines. We also heard wolves behind us. The pack split up, circled us, and communicated with their howls. We realized that they actually thought that I was a cow

moose and were wondering if they should attack. We weren’t really alarmed, but it was an adrenaline pumping moment to be surrounded by a pack of wolves that think you are something to eat. The last howl we heard was to the south and we decided that they moved on. I continued calling and soon saw David, who was at a higher elevation, taking photos. The wolves circled us twice and were now spread out in the vegetation. The wolves David was photographing darted from one spot to the other trying to drive us toward the other wolves. I kept calling and David told me later that every time I called, the wolves reacted with more excitement. David signaled me that a wolf crossed the trail in front of us and whispered “white wolf.” I had moved closer to David to try to get to a point I could see the wolves. That was a big mistake! At least one moved across

the trail so I needed to get back to where I was first set up. I retreated to my original post and there in front of me was the white wolf about 50 yards away. I tried to get my camera in the right spot and he sensed my movements. Before I got off a photo, he moved behind the nearest bush. I was really bummed that I didn’t stay put. I would have gotten a photo of him staring right at me. He retreated keeping the bush between us until he was out of sight. I am sure he was disgusted that their moose breakfast just evaporated. David and I talked about the encounter and thought this was a once in a lifetime adventure. At this point, we didn’t realize that this once in a lifetime adventure would happen two days in a row. The next morning, we returned to the area but called about 2 miles further south. It was another perfect morning with a light fog and no wind. I called for about 20 minutes before we heard a bull answer us with two rapid grunts. Every time I called his grunts got closer. He was just about to come out of the thick trees when we noticed to our left wolves darting through the vegetation. The brush was too thick to see them the whole
time, but we saw several wolves. In the middle of the old logging cut is a slash pile left by the logger. To our amazement, the wolves walked on top of the pile and were in plain sight in front of us. They were led by the white wolf, who we guess is the dominant male. They heard my calling again and just watched us from their vantage point. The white wolf looked older and has a torn ear and scars. I am sure these are from fighting over years to remain dominant. Soon, six wolves were standing on the pile. We couldn’t believe that we saw the same pack two days in a row. This time, though, they came in completely silent. We hadn’t heard one single howl. The white wolf was the first to move and the others followed in the direction of the bull and out of sight. Ten minutes later, a seventh wolf appeared in the same spot. David and I just looked at each other and couldn’t believe the extraordinary events we had just witnessed. Along with the fact that the blond wolves are rare in Minnesota at less than 1 percent of the population.

CATCHLIGHT
Wood Duck & Beaver A friend David Brislance and I were photographing a family of beavers in a pond by Tettegouche State Park. We had just had a few cold nights and there was a thin sheet of ice on the pond. A wood duck flew in and landed on the ice. Before long it worked its way over by the beaver to feed in the only open water on the pond. We both decided to call this one “Lunch with a Friend.” The beaver was very tolerant and they stayed side by side for some time before the wood duck flew off. —Paul Sundberg NORTHERN WILDS
