Seven billion people already live on our planet, and the number is growing by 220,000 every day. - How can we provide food for more and more people without damaging the environment? - How can we improve everyone’s health and prevent diseases? To provide better answers to these questions, research is under way in Bayer’s three divisions: Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Health and Crop Science as well as the business unit Animal Health. Fields in which Bayer is already a global leader – and whose importance to the future of humankind grows by the day. www.bayer.dk

The AmCham Global Network

The American Chamber of Commerce in Denmark (AmCham Denmark) is a non-profit, non-governmental business association representing companies actively investing in Denmark and the United States. As the voice for U.S. and international business in Denmark, AmCham is committed building a more competitive business and investment climate in Denmark, one that encourages investments and stimulates growth.

U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK

I am pleased once again to offer congratulations on behalf of the United States Embassy in Copenhagen to the American Chamber of Commerce on another fantastic year for U.S. business in Denmark. The strong working relationship between the Embassy and AmCham reflects the successful partnership between our countries and the promise of continued shared prosperity into the future. As I reflect on the more than two years I have served as U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, I am excited by the excellent cooperation between our countries, a cooperation that AmCham has furthered through its hands-on efforts to boost American business. This is important to us as an Embassy, and there are numerous examples of how companies are working to the benefit of both the American and Danish economies. Denmark is increasingly present in the U.S. economy. Just this February I was pleased to join my Danish counterpart, Ambassador Lars Lose, and representatives from Danish firms in meetings in my home state of Massachusetts and in New York to identify more opportunities. The resilience of the U.S. economy has led some savvy Danish companies to turn their attention to the U.S. market for the first time, and others to build on past work to make significant new investments there. In 2015, Novo Nordisk announced plans to invest

4 Yearbook 2016

U.S. business also recognizes the value of the Danish brand, and of Denmark as a place to invest. After considering sites around the world, Apple announced its choice last year to construct one of the world’s largest data centers in Denmark, highlighting that Denmark is indeed a world-class country in which to operate. The new site will be powered completely by renewable energy. As strong as the business relationship is, there is always room for increasing the efficiency of trade and for creating new opportunities, which is why both Denmark and the United States are advocating for passage of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). It is a tribute to the value Danes and Danish businesses place on free trade that Denmark enjoys one of the highest approval ratings of TTIP among all EU member countries. Success is always a team effort, and in AmCham business has a powerful partner. I want to thank AmCham for being a voice of U.S. business and for its efforts to make Denmark an even better place for companies to operate and do business. AmCham’s work – everything from providing access to decision makers, seminars with thought-leaders, the always enjoyable cultural events, or the long collaboration with the Embassy to get American citizens easier access to Danish drivers’ licenses – is invaluable to the U.S. business community here in Denmark. I look forward to continuing the Embassy’s close working relationship with AmCham and wish you a successful 2016.

Message from the CHAIRMAN Welcome to this year’s AmCham yearbook. As many of you know, AmCham has a strong history of policy work and of creating opportunities for dialogue and networking between international companies in Denmark and Danish decision-makers. We are pleased that we were able to continue this in 2015 through high level access in the Danish Government and by continuing to bring strong value to our members. Looking forward, as the voice of international business in Denmark, our vision is to be the thought leader and network of choice in shaping a competitive and sustainable environment for U.S. and international business in Denmark. To do this we will: • Advocate for a competitive

business climate in Denmark. • Communicate the contributions of international companies to the Danish society. • Facilitate knowledge exchange with global thought leaders. • Provide a forum for international business and political leaders to engage. Denmark has a well-educated and highly-skilled workforce, and a unique ability to create innovation. Therefore, there is tremendous potential for international companies and their investments to transform this potential into growth and jobs. And I am excited to work with the members of this organization as we

6 Yearbook 2016

move forward with such a positive mission for international businesses and Denmark. There has never been a more important time to have a strong collective voice speaking on behalf of international business, and with your active support, we will make great strides in 2016. In closing, I would like to acknowledge the valuable relationships we share with our many partners and extend a special thanks to the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Ambassador Gifford for their invaluable contributions. I am honored and encouraged by the Ambassador’s commitment to further develop economic and commercial relations between the U.S. and Denmark. Thanks also to my fellow board members, whose leadership and engagement is a key factor in AmCham’s current and future success. Finally, let me take this opportunity to thank you, our members, for your continuing participation and support. Ron Park, Chairman

Message from the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 2015 was once again a banner year for AmCham as we continued to develop our voice for international business in Denmark. No other nongovernmental business organization in Denmark has this niche focus which makes us unique and relevant for key decision makers. This publication is rich with examples of the access and accomplishments that took place during 2015. Our efforts took many forms, including policy-driven meetings with key ministers and political stakeholders; stimulating, high-level networking events; and top notch promotion and profiling opportunities for our companies. New initiatives in 2015 included a strategic partnership with AVT Business School, two new flagship events (4th of July and Fall Member Dinner) and a Nordic CEO Forum. In June, AmCham made a donation from its Education Fund to the Crown Prince’s Harvard Scholarship Fund. Looking forward, we enter 2016 with a re-vamped vision/mission and a re-focused policy agenda, which positions us well for a strong performance in the years to come.

A FORUM FOR BUSINESS AND POLITICAL LEADERS TO ENGAGE

16 Yearbook 2016

A Forum for Business and Political Leaders to Engage A primary focus of AmCham Denmark is to facilitate dialogue between business and political leaders in order to forge strong, productive relationships that continue to develop over time. In 2015, AmCham’s strong program of events once again provided members with access to key political figures.

1 AmCham’s Board of Directors meets with Lars Løkke Rasmussen 2 Meet the Leaders event featuring Regional Council Chairman Sophie Hæstorp Andersen

In January, AmCham’s new Policy Committee kicked off the new year with a briefing from Venstre’s General Secretary, Claus Richter at the Law Firm of Bech-Bruun. Richter delivered a candid presentation of the party’s 2015 election campaign and their key business policy priorities. In February, AmCham’s Board of Directors gathered for a roundtable discussion with Venstre’s Chairman and now Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Mr. Rasmussen engaged the Board in a lively discussion on difficult issues such as taxes, immigration reform, the use of investment incentives and the general need to focus on what creates jobs and growth. He expressed his appreciation for AmCham’s work and underlined his intention to be a strong advocate for investment, jobs and growth, both before and after the 2015 election. The board meeting was hosted by Regus at their ‘Business Center Strandvejen’ in Hellerup.

In late February, AmCham held a Meet the Leaders session with Regional Council Chairman Sophie Hæstorp Andersen at MSD’s Danish headquarters in Ballerup. Ms. Hæstorp Andersen shared her visions for innovation and growth in a regional context – with a focus on the healthcare sector. The regions are facing great challenges, and as the authority charged with managing the healthcare sector, but without the power to impose taxes, she underlined that the Region is forced to prioritize its efforts every day. Following the 2015 Danish Parliamentary Elections, AmCham’s Policy Committee gathered at Shell’s new office for a roundtable session with Dansk Folkeparti’s speaker on Business and Growth, Hans Kristian Skibby. Mr. Skibby gave an open and honest look into the business policies of Dansk Folkeparti; what their main priorities are, and how they hope to achieve their goals. In early November, more than 70 AmCham members gathered at Kromann Reumert for a Meet the Leaders session with the new Tax Minister Karsten Lauritzen. Minister Lauritzen gave a firsthand account of the political landscape and his ministry, delivering an insightful and humorous look into the government’s political initiatives as well as pointing out the challenges of being a one-party government. AmCham ended the political season by meeting with the Minister of Transportation, Hans Christian Schmidt to discuss the importance of easing requirements for American citizens to exchange driver’s licenses in Denmark. AmCham’s lengthy advocacy effort paid off when the Minister agreed to change the requirements from April 1, 2016.

A cornerstone of AmCham’s policy work is based on the fact that countries must remain competitive in order to attract and retain foreign investment. AmCham is committed to building a more competitive business climate in Denmark, one that encourages investments and stimulates growth. Annual General Meeting and Transatlantic Business Summit Maersk hosted AmCham’s 2015 Transatlantic Business Summit which focused on the strength and importance of the transatlantic economy. Keynote speaker Joe Quinlan, Chief Strategist at Bank of America, emphasized the importance of a strong relationship across the Atlantic, in order to maintain a prosperous global economy. Quinlan’s message was followed by U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Rufus Gifford, who proposed a ‘call to action’ to dispel the myths surrounding the TTIP debate and strengthen a positive dialogue around the important trade initiative. From the other side of the pond, the then-Danish Ambassador to the U.S., Peter Taksøe-Jensen, echoed Gifford and noted that when he began his Ambassadorship, and no one was talking about the proven strength of the Transatlantic relationship. Today, the U.S. is Denmark’s 3rd largest trading partner.

AmCham at Folkemøde AmCham once again took an active role at the 2015 Folkemøde, the annual political festival on the Danish island of Bornholm. During the 4-day event, AmCham organized two public debates, one on innovation and investments and one focused on the TTIP. In the first debate, a panel consisting of Lars Klüver of The Council for Technology, Peter Høngaard Andersen, The Innovation Fund and Frederik Wiedemann of Politiken debated the question of “Innovation, Investments and Insecurity,” utilizing Anja Bo as the moderator. The second debate, which focused solely on TTIP, included a panel consisting of U.S. Ambassador Rufus Gifford; MEP Jeppe Kofod; Chief Counsel for the Consumer Council, Benedicte Federspiel and EU Commission Representative in Copenhagen Laurs Nørlund. The debate entitled “Why we need a Transatlantic Trade Agreement” was moderated by AmCham’s Stephen Brugger and focused on what the TTIP could actually include and where it could make a difference to companies and consumers.

2015 Foreign Investor Summit

2015 Business Barometer

AmCham’s annual Foreign Investor Summit highlights the importance of foreign investments in Denmark, and facilitates the discussion about what makes a country competitive. The 2015 event was held in collaboration with Invest in Denmark and host Schneider Electric, with a focus on the links between sustainability and attracting foreign investments.

In September, AmCham published its 2015 Business Barometer, which shows that foreign companies continue to invest in Denmark and their outlook for the coming year are more positive than ever before. However, the survey also showed that many companies are still considering moving jobs and investments out of Denmark – mainly due to the high cost of doing business. Attracting talent with the right skills was sited as an additional challenge.

This year’s keynote speaker was Joseph Kava, Vice President of Google Data Centers, who gave an exclusive account of the company’s strategy to make their data centers more sustainable and energy efficient. In order to do so, a number of preconditions have to be met, and Denmark seems to be able to meet most of these, so when asked directly, Kava did not reject the idea of Google investing in a data center in Denmark sometime in the future. Kava’s message was very wellreceived by Dorte B. Vizard, Invest in Denmark, who presented their recent report “Why Denmark”, based on a survey of 155 foreign investors. The report concludes that companies see Denmark’s infrastructure and its strong professional, technical and commercial competencies as the main reasons for choosing Denmark. Final remarks were given by Joachim B. Olsen, MP for Liberal Alliance, who argued that labor reforms are the prerequisite for growth and that they would also be crucial in order to make Denmark more attractive to foreign companies.

Facilitating Policy Changes As a part of keeping Denmark competitive, AmCham advocates for changes in policies that will foster talent attraction and retention. One key issue for AmCham has been the political struggle to ease the requirements for American citizens to exchange their driver’s license in Denmark, without having to take a Danish driving test. After a concerted effort stretching over almost a decade, in December, the Minister of Transportation, Hans Christian Schmidt announced plans to change the requirements from April 2016.

FACILITATING KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE

Facilitating Knowledge Exchange AmCham Denmark prides itself on providing its member companies with a strong network, we continuously seeks to strengthen the dialogue by facilitating a business forum where relevant knowledge and best practices can be exchanged. In January, AmCham partnered with Kongressen.com for a lively debate about President Obama’s 2015 State of the Union address. More than 70 participants gathered at Rambøll’s new headquarters in Ørestad to hear experts reflect on the President’s speech and how it was received in the U.S. and abroad. Panelists included U.S. Ambassador Gifford; Nykredit’s Chief Economist Ulrik Bie; Editor-in-Chief Anders Agner Pedersen and News Editor Mirco Reimer from Kongressen. com. In April, AVT Business School hosted 35 AmCham executives for an inspirational and informative session on ‘21 Century Leadership’ with Professor Jeremy Klein, Leadership Advisor at MIT’s Sloan School of Business. Participants were treated to a dynamic and inspirational breakfast event, with actionable leadership advice. Also in April, AmCham’s Analytical Instrument Committee welcomed over 200 researchers, chemists and industry experts to the Scandic Copenhagen for

the 15th annual Executive Seminars in Analytical Chemistry (ESAC 2015). This year’s event featured the latest developments within Life Science/ Biotech, Pharmaceutical, Food/Environment and Clinical/Forensic applications. Participants could choose between 20 different seminars, speak with progressive vendors and network with industry professionals. 2 AmCham and event partners Børsen In June, Ledelse and Hill & Knowlton arranged an exclusive seminar on ‘The Language of Power’ with Obama speechwriter and the man behind the ‘Yes, We Can!’ speeches, Jon Favreau. The former White House speechwriter shared his approach to writing Presidential speeches and shed some light on working alongside the most powerful man in the world.

In August, AVT Business School hosted a second breakfast session ‘The Global Economy – Out of the Woods but into the Dark,’ with U.C. Berkeley Professor, Paul Tiffany, who discussed current political and economic events and how recent history has shaped them. The keynote speaker for AmCham’s 2015 Fall 3 Dinner was Donald Kieffer, Senior Lecturer Member in Operations Management at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, and former Vice President of Operations at Harley-Davidson. With inspirational and humorous stories, Kieffer’s energetic speech reminded guests of the importance of being open to new ideas, and how this can enhance productivity within their organizations.

AmCham Speaks out

AmCham’s Transatlantic Company of the Year highlights the important contributions of Danish companies investing in the U.S. The annual award is promoted jointly with the American Danish Business Council in Washington D.C.

AmCham’s Foreign Company of the Year recognizes the importance and positive impact of foreign companies investing in Denmark.

Throughout the year, AmCham “speaks out” in numerous newspaper articles and opinion editorials (OpEds) on behalf of international companies in Denmark.

In March, Gehl Architects was named as the recipient of AmCham’s 2015 Transatlantic Company of the Year. The jury emphasized how Gehl Architects have transformed the way urban spaces are designed today, and were encouraged to see how Danish design thinking can be successfully transferred across the Atlantic, demonstrating that even a small company can have a huge impact in the U.S. Award finalists included: GN Resound, Rambøll, Weibel Scientific, Siteimprove, Bavarian Nordic, Plumrose and Sitecore.

In October, Bayer was recognized as Foreign Company of the Year due to exceptional growth, extensive research partnerships and the introduction of innovative products. Spokesman for the jury, Jørgen Bardenfleth said that they placed particular emphasis on the fast growing pharma and life science company’s ability to show growth in difficult markets and their ability to create deep partnerships with Danish institutions. Award Finalists included: Bristol-Myers Squibb, Cisco, Hitachi and Schneider Electric.

In an October OpEd in Børsen, AmCham weighed in on a series of articles criticizing the process around attracting a major Apple investment to Viborg. In the article, AmCham applauded Invest in Denmark’s efforts to attract investments and pointed out that we should be celebrating the that a major international company has like Apple chose Denmark of its new sustainable data center. In November, AmCham authored an OpEd entitled ‘Yes, Denmark Needs Foreign Investments’ in response to Børsen’s economic commentator Thomas Thygesen provocative claim that Denmark would do just fine without foreign investments. AmCham countered that lower levels of international investments will undermine Denmark’s ability to create jobs and growth.

Event Sponsors:

The Network of Choice One of the core benefits of joining AmCham is becoming a member of a strong, international business network. We work continuously to develop relevamt forums in which members have the opportunity to engage with high-level executives and key political decision-makers. AmCham’s Expat Leadership Forum is a community of foreign senior executives interested in learning more about the Danish business, cultural and political landscape in order to be more informed leaders. In March, the group gathered at Christiansborg Palace for an “insiders” tour of the Danish Parliament and an exclusive dinner at the Palace’s “Tower” restaurant with MP’s Bertel Haarder and Karin Gaardsted. This was a truly unique opportunity for ExPat leaders to learn about the Danish political system, from the politicians themselves, while networking with their peers. The session was organized in cooperation with Carlson Wagonlit Travel.

AmCham’s new Nordic Executive Network is a peer group of Nordic leaders who come together to share best practices on leading their Nordic operations. In November, the group gathered at CSC for a roundtable discussion entitled ‘Nordic Operations – One Size Fits All?’ As companies increasingly view the Nordic Region as one marketplace, the discussion

focused on the implications and opportunities of “Nordification” and how to successfully lead profitable businesses and grow the Nordic economy. The event was held in cooperation with Copenhagen Capacity. AmCham’s Healthcare Committee is a network-based forum for managing directors in the healthcare industry, and working with key healthcare stakeholders and decision makers in order to find the best way forward. In February, the committee met with Regional Council Chairman Sophie Hæstorp Andersen. AmCham’s Policy Committee engages the membership in identifying and prioritizing issues impacting AmCham member companies. The committee also meets with key political stakeholders in order to better understand the political climate and convey key AmCham policy messages. In 2015, the Policy Committee developed an updated policy agenda, which provided the framework for several important AmCham policy events at Folkemødet as well as the Foreign Investor Summit. Additionally, the committee met with Claus Richter, General Secretary of Venstre and Hans Kristian Skibby, the Speaker on Business and Growth at Dansk Folkeparti.

THE NETWORK OF CHOICE

AmCham’s social events are also an important part of the network, allowing members to engage in a more informal setting. In January, AmCham Denmark held its 2015 Patron Member Dinner hosted by U.S. Ambassador Rufus Gifford and his partner, Dr. Stephen DeVincent, at their private residence, Rydhave. This year’s event was sponsored by Weibel Scientific and was attended by more than 6o Patron members and their spouses. AmCham members celebrated the 4th of July at Sølyst, the picturesque Royal Shooting Club north of Copenhagen. The exclusive event featured an afternoon jazz concert, a gourmet dinner paired with American wines, and fireworks over the Øresund. The guest of honor was the U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Karl Stoltz, who spoke about the unique friendship between America and Denmark.

Shortly after the summer break, AmCham held its annual golf tournament, sponsored by AC Hotel Bella Sky Copenhagen. Players from all sectors of Denmark’s international business community came together at Simon’s Golf to compete for the coveted AmCham Cup, and some fantastic prizes including round-trip airline tickets to the U.S. courtesy of Icelandair. In November, AmCham families and friends gathered at the Marriott in Copenhagen for AmCham’s ever popular Family Thanksgiving Dinner. Event sponsor Microsoft ensured that the kids were entertained by providing Xbox One Kinect stations with dance and sports games. In all, more than 240 adults and kids of all ages were treated to an authentic American Thanksgiving experience. In December, AmCham members, partners and ‘friends’ gathered at AmCham’s downtown Copenhagen office for an informal Holiday Reception, which marked the end of yet another successful year.

EUROPEAN COUNCIL OF AMERICAN CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

AmChams in Europe executives share best practices in Milan (Fall 2015)

AmChams In Europe AmCham Denmark hosts the secretariat for the European Council of American Chambers of Commerce (AmChams in Europe), and AmCham’s Stephen Brugger currently serves as the organization’s Vice Chair. Established in 1963, AmChams in Europe serves as the umbrella organization for directors of 45 AmChams throughout Europe and Eurasia – all accredited by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Together, the organization represent the interests of more than 17,000 American and European companies employing 20 million workers - account for more than $ 1.1 trillion in investment on both sides of the Atlantic. AmChams in Europe organize two annual events – a spring conference in the U.S. and a fall conference in Europe.

66 Yearbook 2016

In the U.S., AmCham executives engage with companies, organizations and key government agencies and keep abreast of current U.S. business and political trends. The European conference is hosted by a member AmCham and focuses primarily on improving AmCham operations through the exchange of best practices. In May, 25 executives participated in the 2015 U.S. Conference, which brought the group to California and Washington D.C. In late September, representatives from 27 AmChams gathered in Milan, Italy for the 2015 Best Practices Conference, which was hosted by AmCham Italy during their 100th Anniversary year.
