This year AmCham and United Way will present our annual Charity Dinner, “Sabores Unidos“ September 22 at Hotel Real Intercontinental. Proceeds will go to Aldeas Infantiles, SOS, this wonderful organization has been operating in Guatemala for Forty years.

They continue to make a big difference, dedicating efforts for Early Childhood development, centering all of the family working together. By providing the tools for quality care in the home.

Families of communities are chosen when there are High numbers of abandonment, child abuse, malnutrition and poverty. We will support from Sabores Unidos, which is you, the people who purchase seats and come to the dinner, along with the fine restaurants and hotel who support, at their expense, plus the many volunteers that make all this possible, 240 families for one year, giving education to the families, the communities will be Xitinap1, Xitinap 1V, Xitinap V, and Chorecales in Santa Cruz of Quiche.

AMCHAM CONTRIBUTING TO THE COUNTRY´S DEVELOPMENT This past month we held the 18th Job Fair in attempt of supporting everyone looking for employment.

This event counted more than 11,000 people looking for a job, it’s unfortunate there were only 2,000 positons available between the 35 participating companies.

When we analyze the numbers and statistics of all participants, we noticed that young adults were the majority.

This includes males and females between the ages of 18 to 25, with little to no higher education and no knowledge of a second language.

For AmCham, this is a clear indicator that will surely motive to work harder on the creation of bilingual education programs and technical careers that will ultimately support the employer just as much as the employee.

Guatemala accounts for a large number of entrepreneurs and a human capital that is characterized to have charisma and great in customer service. Despite the overall picture not being all so positive, we believe that Guatemalans have the personal drive and potential to be successful!

What do Indicators Tell Us About Investing in Guatemala?

Dentro de una vasta diversidad de información, el inversionista debe tener claro dónde buscar la información que es determinante para identificar hacia dónde destinar su inversión.

A mi parecer, tres preguntas son clave para realizar una prueba de ácido sobre posibles destinos de inversión: (1) ¿Qué tan fácil es iniciar un negocio?, (2) ¿Qué tan favorables son las condiciones del país para nuevas inversiones, y (3) ¿Qué tan segura será mi inversión?

La primera pregunta se podría contestar a través del índice Doing Business de la agencia IFC del Banco Mundial. En los últimos 10 años, Guatemala ha sido considerada en dos ocasiones el país más reformador del mundo en cuanto a mejoras en la facilidad de abrir negocios, avanzando 47 posiciones (de las 128 a la 81), habiendo llegado a la posición 71 en 2013.

La segunda pregunta tiene relación con las condiciones de competitividad del país. Al respecto, el Índice de Competitividad Global del Foro Económico Mundial muestra un avance de 13 posiciones en 10 años, ubicándose en 2015 en la posición 78 de 140 países.

Por último, la seguridad de la inversión va de la mano con la calificación de riesgo país que hacen las calificadoras internacionales de crédito. Hoy en día, a pesar de la crisis política en 2015, Guatemala ha mantenido su evaluación a una posición de ser “grado de inversión” (investment grade), con dos calificadoras mejorando la perspectiva del país en semanas recientes, pasando de negativa a estable.

Guatemala muestra condiciones notables que son merecedoras de evidenciar, no tanto por la posición relativa ante el mundo, sino por los avances que muy rápido se empiezan a vislumbrar. Parte de esto se debe a contar con una estrategia público-privada que recoge en una Agenda de Competitividad e largo plazo cuáles son las prioridades del país en temas de clústeres productivos, prioridades a resolver en materia de políticas públicas (imperativos estratégicos de país y limitantes sectoriales con enfoque territorial), y potenciales ciudades que pueden convertirse en polos de desarrollo para la atracción de inversiones focalizadas. Conocer más sobre esta estrategia sería de gran valor para potenciales inversionistas.

Within a vast diversity of information, any investor must be very clear where they are searching for information because that will ultimately be used to identify where their investment will go. For me, there are three key questions one must consider when there are conducting an Acid Test in order to determine where will be investing: 1) How easy is it to start a business? 2) How favorable are the country’s conditions for new investors? And 3) How safe will my investment be?

The first question could be answered through the IFC’s Doing Business Index, a World Bank Agency. Within the last 10 years, Guatemala has been considered the most reformed country on two occasions. When it comes to ease of starting a new business, they jumped

in the rankings from 128 to 81, to reaching 71 in 2013.

The second question is in relation to the country’s conditions on competitiveness.

In respect, the Global Competitiveness Index from the World Economic Forum demonstrates the country rose in the rankings 13 positions in 10 years. By 2015 this put them at the ranking of 78 out of 140 countries.

Lastly, investment security comes from the country’s risk rating that are conducted by the international credit rating agency. Today, despite the political crisis in 2015, Guatemala has maintained their evaluation position as “Investment Grade.” This has been brought upon two ratings improving within recent weeks that went from negative to stable.

Guatemala has demonstrated notable conditions that deserve to be mentioned, no so much for the realtive position before the world, but for the advances that we are starting to see form. Part of this must be told with a public-private strategy that is picked up in a competitiveness Agency long term. These are the country’s priorities when it comes to productive clusters, the priority in solving public policy (Country’s strategic imperatives, and sectorial limitations on territory), and potential cities that could be turned into major attractions for target investors. To know more about this strategy would be of great value for potential investors.

Efectivamente, según estudios realizados y de acuerdo a nuestra experiencia cuando los empleados están motivados, están entusiasmados por su trabajo y se sienten parte del equipo (en otras palabras se sienten felices); son responsables, creativos y proactivos. Esto se ve reflejado en el desempeño de la empresa, lo que a su vez se refleja en el servicio a los clientes (tanto externos como internos), que es una piedra angular del éxito de las compañías. Los empleados felices crean clientes felices.

Un estudio realizado por Wharton Universia nos dice que uno de los puntos clave que motiva a la gente a comprar un producto es la atención al cliente, y un informe de RightNow concluye que el 86% de los consumidores pagarían más para asegurarse un buen servicio al cliente y un 73% mencionan que la atención amigable de un representante de servicio al cliente, puede hacer que ellos se enamoren de la marca.

De manera que hace sentido invertir tiempo y dinero en la motivación y capacitación de nuestros colaboradores, como un proceso constante y una filosofía de empresa. La mayoría de las veces un simple “buenos días”, un “gracias”, una sonrisa, una palmada en la espalda, hacen una gran diferencia en la actitud de las personas, pero debe originarse desde los más altos mandos de la organización y seguramente por imitación empezará a replicarse desde y hacia todos los niveles de la misma. Happy Employees make business successful According to studies conducted, and in fact from personal experience, employees are more motivated when they are eager to work and feel a part of the team (In other words, when they are happy). This in turn creates responsible, creative and proactive employees that are easily reflected in business performance and customer service (both internally and externally). This is absolutely the cornerstone for a successful company; happy employees make happy clients.

A study conducted by the Wharton School of Business (UPenn), tells us that a key condition that motivates people to buy comes from their customer service experience. In addition, according to a RightNow report, they concluded that 86% of consumers are willing to pay more if they know they will be getting great costumer service; and 73% mentioned that with some friendly attention from a sales associate, they might just fall in love with the Brand.

So it makes sense to invest time and the money on motivating and training our employees, even integrate it as a permanent process and into the company´s philosophy.

Most of the time a simple, “Good Morning”, a “Thank You, a smile, or a pat on the back, makes a huge difference in how people interact with one another. But it must start from the top, from the highest level executive in the organization to all the levels below.

This is setting an example, and people will follow and truly feel a part of the organization and included, which will ultimately affect the employee turnover rate in a positive way.

One should take into account that this must start from the recruiting process, it is not enough to just evaluate their resume, but we need to start going that extra mile.

Furthermore, it’s worth to mention that Guatemala made it among the top 40 when it comes to happiness. Based on a study made by the UN, Guatemala took #39 out of 157 countries included in the World Happiness Report. This state of mind could definitely be taken advantage of and if we are able to organize and focus on this, we might not only be able to improve society, but our company as well. The challenge however is weather people will be happy with the job, because this will easily reflect overall performance results, not to mention the happiness of clients.

Por otro lado, vale la pena mencionar que Guatemala está considerado dentro de los 40 países cuya gente es más feliz. De acuerdo al estudio publicado por la ONU, Guatemala ocupa el puesto #39 de 157 incluidos en el índice de felicidad mundial.

Ese estado de ánimo definitivamente puede ser aprovechado, y si lo sabemos orientar y enfocar, seguramente contribuirá no solo 10

La perspectiva guatemalteca a diez años del DR-CAFTA

…uno de los Tratados Comerciales más relevantes Coordinadora de Trade Center Amcham | María Inés Valle Balsells.

A través de los años, hemos observado avances en el bilateralismo entre Estados Unidos y Guatemala. Las relaciones comerciales y diplomáticas de ambos países iniciaron hace 65 años, específicamente en el año 1951.

Fue en los años 80 cuando el Gobierno de los Estados Unidos aplicó la Iniciativa de la Cuenca del Caribe (ICC), cuyo objetivo fue fomentar el desarrollo económico de la región permitiendo la entrada libre de impuestos arancelarios a USA de un gran porcentaje de productos centroamericanos y del Caribe.

Luego de ampliaciones y modificaciones a la ICC, en el año 2001 comenzaron a surgir las propuestas para crear un Tratado de Libre Comercio con E.E.U.U., Centroamérica y República Dominicana. Fue en el año 2006 cuando este entró en vigor (en distintas fechas) en El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua y Guatemala, seguido de República Dominicana en el año 2007 y Costa Rica en el 2009.

Hoy en día, nos encontramos a diez años de uno de los Tratados más importantes, que han marcado un “antes y un después” para una zona de libre comercio. No obstante, el Tratado ha recibido opiniones a lo largo del

tiempo, a través de detractores y defensores...creando un espacio de diálogo y discusión sin precedente alguno.

Lo primero de admitir, pese a los comentarios de toda índole, es que Estados Unidos continúa siendo el principal socio comercial e inversionista directo para nuestro país.

Esto es cierto, aunque la balanza comercial siempre ha sido a favor de Norteamérica. Por ejemplo, de acuerdo al BANGUAT, en el año 2005 las exportaciones guatemaltecas hacia USA pasaron de US$2,686 millones a US$3,679 millones en el año 2015, reportando un crecimiento total del 38.3%. Mientras que las importaciones de USA a Guatemala han incrementado desde el año 2005 al año 2015, 63.4% (de US$3,983 millones a US$6,512 millones). El 98% del universo de productos guatemaltecos tiene acceso a Estados Unidos con 0% de arancel, siendo principalmente exportaciones de vestuario y textiles; banano; piedras y metales preciosos; frutas; y café. Mientras que el 97% de los productos estadounidenses ingresan a Guatemala con 0% de arancel, siendo principalmente derivados del petróleo; máquinas y aparatos eléctricos.

En términos de inversión, de los US$745.1 millones de IED del mundo a Guatemala en el año 2007, el 43.8% correspondieron a Estados Unidos; mientras que, en el año 2015, de los US$1,208.50, el 28.8% a dicho país. ¿Qué se debe hacer para atraer más inversión? Si bien, la posición geográfica del país es un aspecto que ha permitido la atracción de inversión a Guatemala, no funge como factor único. Debemos contar con seguridad y estabilidad jurídica; leyes que brinden incentivos a todas las industrias del país; capital humano preparado; protección a la propiedad privada; inversión en la investigación y desarrollo (I+D); estabilidad política; e infraestructura adecuada.

Guatemalan Perspectives after 10 years of the DR-CAFTA…One of the Most Significant Trade Agreements During the last years, we have witnessed improvements between the U.S. and the Guatemalan bilateralism.

Trade and diplomatic relations of both countries started 55 years ago, specifically in the year 1951. During the 80’s, when the U.S. Government applied the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI), with the purpose to encourage the economic development of the region, allowing free tariff rates to the U.S. from the Central American and the Caribbean goods.

After some modifications of the CBI, during the year 2001, there were proposals to create a free trade agreement with the U.S., Central America and the Dominican Republic. www.amchamguate.com

This agreement went into force in the year 2006 (on different dates) in El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica in the year 2009.

After 10 years of these important treaties, which have marked a “before and after” for a free trade region, were the trade offer has been diversified.

Nevertheless, there have been different opinions with respect to this treaty, some are in support of and some are against it…bringing a dialogue and discussion related to it.

First of all, despite of all kinds of comments, the U.S. is still our main commercial partner and direct investor to our country.

In commercial terms, the trade balance has been in favor of the U.S. since the beginning of these relations between U.S. and Guatemala. For example, according to BANGUAT, during 2005 Guatemalan exports to U.S. went from US$2,686 million to US$3,679 million, with a total growth of 38.3%. Imports from the U.S. to Guatemala have increased since 2005 to 2015, a 63.4% (from US$3,983 million to US$6,512 million). A 98% universe of Guatemalan goods has a complete entrance to the U.S. with a 0% tariff, and these exports are mainly apparel and textiles; bananas; precious metals and stones; frozen, fresh or dried fruits; and coffee.

While a 97% of U.S. products come into Guatemala with a 0% tariff, being these goods: petroleum products; machinery and electrical appliances. Meanwhile, there are still some pending tax reliefs in some products to a 12, 15 and 20 year-period.

In a commercial sense, the learning that we can take out from it is the importance of giving a bigger value added to our exports, which impact

will be more relevant to our economy.

But, how we can make it? Through a transformation of primary goods and training.

In terms of investment, from the foreign direct investment US$745.1 million from the world to Guatemala in the year 2007, 43.8% came from the U.S., while in the year 2015, from US$1,208.50 million, 28.8% from that country. So, which factors do Guatemala has to apply in order to become a more attractive country for investments? The geographical position of the country is one point that has attracted investment to Guatemala, eventhough it is not the only or determinant factor. We should count with security and legal stability; laws that bring incentives to all the industries of the country; well-trained human capital; private property protection; security for all the citizens; investment in development and research (D+R); political stability and proper infrastructure among others.

El pasado 28 de julio del presente año se llevó a cabo la Cuarta Reunión de Cuerpo Consultivo en la cual se presentaron avances interinstitucionales, estrategias y propuestas de acción para el Plan de Alianza para la Prosperidad del Triángulo Norte -PAPTN-.

Uno de los temas principales fue la creación de las mesas de trabajo ya que son una herramienta clave para determinar planes de acción en cada uno de los ejes del PAPTN. Así mismo, dentro de las propuestas resultantes de estas reuniones se cuenta con proyectos de generación de datos, política de empleo decente, áreas de impulso para dinamizar la productividad e integración de participantes clave a las mesas.

On July 28th of the current year, the Advisory Board’s fourth meeting took place where institutional progress, strategy, and proposals of action for Plan of Alliance for Prosperity –PAPTN- were discussed.

Es por ello que dentro de las acciones a corto plazo se ha establecido una estrategia de priorización de 4 municipios en los cuales se trabajará en generar condiciones óptimas de salud, educación, infraestructura y fortalecimiento institucional los cuales serán pilares básicos para el desarrollo integral de las comunidades. Los municipios se seleccionarán de acuerdo a índices de pobreza, desnutrición y presencia de cooperación internacional.

Este plan piloto busca que los esfuerzos de los ministerios responsables de estas áreas de desarrollo se integren de tal forma que se cumplan los requerimientos básicos de las comunidades, a su vez se busca conocer la cooperación internacional con el objetivo de complementarla.

El PAPTN cuenta con retos fuertes como la baja ejecución presupuestaria, infraestructura, desempleo y falta de desarrollo de las comunidades. Sin embargo, la integración de los esfuerzos interinstitucionales y la consideración de estos factores ha llevado al PAPTN a lograr implementar proyectos prometedores y con tendencia al éxito.

One of the primary topics focused on was the creation of the employment tables, now that its a key tool to determine plans of action in each of the pillars of PAPTN. Furthermore, the proposals discussed at these meetings count on projects for data generation, decent employment policy, impulse areas that encourage productivity and the integration of participant’s key to these tables.

This is why within short term action there has been established a prioritization strategy for 4 municipalities where they will be able to work and generate optimal conditions. The following are key areas of focus: health, education, infrastructure, and institutional strengthening in which functions as the basic pillars for integral development of communities.

These municipalities were chosen by a number of variables such as, poverty level, malnutrition level, and International cooperation.

This pilot plan is in search of efforts from the ministry responsible of these development areas and integrated as long as they fulfill basic requirements for the communities. Meanwhile it also searches to know international cooperation’s with the objective of complementing it.

PAPTN counts on strong challenges due to poor execution with budgets, infrastructure, unemployment and the lack of community development. However, the integration of efforts and consideration from interinstitutional factors have taken PAPTN to accomplish the implementation of promising projects with the tendency of success.

Cuestión de

Actitud Samuel Nicolás López Rodríguez

Abril de 1992. Recuerdo a mi madre con lágrimas en sus ojos, suplicándome el considerar mi decisión de viajar ilegalmente a Estados Unidos, ante una travesía incierta, que ha costado incluso la vida de muchos hermanos connacionales.

Con sentimientos encontrados de tristeza y entusiasmo por el futuro, me despedí de mi familia, encomendando a Dios mi viaje en busca de “el sueño americano”.

Partí muy de madrugada de mi pueblo.

Esa noche llegué a Huehuetenango, donde pasé la noche. Al siguiente día, muy temprano nos introdujeron en un camión. Éramos aproximadamente unas treinta personas de distintas nacionalidades, con quienes incómodamente recorrimos aproximadamente por ocho horas caminos inhóspitos de terracería. Luego caminamos por varias horas entre la maleza y muy cansados nos detuvimos a descansar por unas horas. Solo un pedazo de plástico me protegía del frío y la lluvia. Hubiera querido que aquello fuera un mal sueño.

Al siguiente día, muy temprano, nos introdujeron en otro camión; esta vez acostados uno sobre otro, para evitar ser atrapados: ya estábamos en territorio mexicano, en Comitán, Tapachula.

Habíamos recorrido aproximadamente unos cuarenta y cinco minutos, cuando fuimos detenidos por autoridades de migración. Pasamos la noche encerrados en una celda y al siguiente día fuimos deportados a La Mesilla, Huehuetenango.

No existen palabras que describan la sensación de libertad de estar nuevamente en mi país. Decidí no reintentar ese viaje en condiciones inhumanas. Conseguí un trabajo digno en mi país, formé una familia, me gradué de la Universidad y hoy, veinticuatro años después, estoy más que convencido que nuestro país ofrece las condiciones necesarias para superarnos y salir adelante. Es simplemente cuestión de actitud, el buscar y aprovechar esas oportunidades.

“It simply a question of attitute, to search and take advantange of these opportunities.”

Question of attitude April of 1992. I remember my mother, with tears in her eyes, begging me to reconsider my decision to go to the United States illegally. It was an uncertain journey, which has even taken the lives of several of my countrymen, yet I found myself with emotions of sadness and enthusiasm for the future. So I said goodbye to my family and entrusted God with my journey to find the “American Dream.”

I left my small town very early in the morning and that night I got to Huehuetenango, where I spent the night. The next day they formed us all up in a truck. We were about 30 people of different nationalities, and uncomfortably traveled for about 8 hours on inhospitable dirt road. Later, we walked trough the brush for many hours and had to stop to rest for a while. All I had was a small piece of plastic to protect myself from the cold and rain; I wished so bad it was just a bad dream.

The following day, very early, they formed us all up in another truck; this time one on top of the other to avoid the possibility of getting caught. At this point we were already in Mexican territory, in Comitán, Tapachula. We drove for about 45 minutes when before were detained by the Mexican migration authorities.

After spending the night in a cell we were deported to Mesilla, Huehuetenango the next day.

There are no words to express the sensation of freedom I felt being in my own country again. I decided not to reattempt this trip again under the inhuman conditions I found myself in. I was able to find a decent job within my country, started a family, graduated from university and today, 24 years later I am more convinced that our country offers the necessary conditions to improve and move forward. It simply a question of attitude, to search and take advantage of these opportunities. www.amchamguate.com
