The arrival of September signals the official end of the glorious summer season here on Amelia Island, which is always bittersweet, but the cooler temperatures make saying goodbye to the carefree days of summer a little easier. As the temperatures begin to drop, we pack away happy memories of summer vacation and begin to ease back into the familiar rhythm of school schedules and regular routines, slowly taking up again the responsibilities that make up our daily lives. Thankfully, in addition to the return to our usual routines, autumn on Amelia Island also means the return of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, which always brings great music and good times in its wake, making it a terrific way to kick off the season.
The Amelia Island Jazz Festival, returning this fall for its nineteenth season, owes its success to renowned drummer Les DeMerle, artistic director and founder of the festival. An Amelia Island resident since 1991 with his wife, vocalist Bonnie Eisele, Les got his start drumming with jazz greats Harry James and Lionel Hampton, among others, working with musical icons like Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, and Joe Williams. Les and Bonnie are backed by a tireless group of volunteers who help make the jazz festival an unforgettable event each year. The festival runs this year from October 2 – 9 and welcomes another outstanding line-up of world-class musicians, including headliners Ken Peplowski and the John Pizzarelli Trio, to venues throughout the island.

As always, the festival features a full week of shows and events, kicking off with a free Sunday concert at the Atlantic Recreation Center, then continuing through the week with two special Jazz and Wine Tasting shows at The Decantery in downtown Fernandina Beach, a “Jump, Jive & Wail” swing concert and dance party with the Dynamic Les DeMerle band featuring Bonnie Eisele at Sadler Ranch, and Hot Latin Jazz in its traditional Thursday night slot with festival favorite Trio Caliente, also at Sadler Ranch. Additionally, the fun Late Night Jams return after the headliner performances Friday and Saturday nights at Mocama Beer Company, as well as the delicious Sunday Jazz Brunch at SpringHill Suites by Marriott. It promises to be a great week of music.

DeMerle launched his career as drummer for jazz vibraphone great, Lionel Hampton, while still in high school at age 16. He then toured for 12 years with jazz trumpet master, Harry James, and recorded three albums with him including the Grammy Award winning, King James Version. DeMerle’s own band, Transfusion, recorded five awardwinning LPs. He has toured with Manhattan Transfer and appeared with such musical greats as Lou Rawls, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, and Joe Williams. A resident of Amelia Island since 1991, Les continues to perform at concerts, festivals and jazz cruises with his trio, quartet and Dynamic Les DeMerle Big Band Orchestra featuring Bonnie Eisele, which has recorded 14 CDs including their new recording, Hot Night In Venice, an Origin Records release. Eisele is the featured vocalist with the Dynamic Les DeMerle Band. She has appeared with the band on numerous jazz cruises and at many popular jazz clubs, including Somerset’s in Singapore, The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, City Jazz in Orlando, and Arturo Sandoval’s in Miami. She also has toured the U.S. and Europe with the Chicago Free Street Theater, an original musical theater and dance group. Bonnie’s diverse performing experience includes singing at the Chicago Playboy Club, Chicago Fest, Drury Lane Theater and Miami’s Fontainebleau Resort. She studied music and dance in Brazil on a Rotary Foundation Graduate Fellowship.

The Amelia Island Jazz Festival began in 2001 when drummer Les DeMerle and his wife, vocalist Bonnie Eisele, fulfilled their lifetime dream of creating a diversified jazz festival on Amelia Island. The couple produced the festival for three years prior to its incorporation as a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. With support from the community and their devoted volunteers and sponsors, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival has grown and thrived.

These educational programs culminate in the Amelia Island Jazz Festival Scholarship, a financial award presented to deserving high school musicians who demonstrate strong potential to perform jazz at the collegiate level. This year’s winner is 18-year-old Cameron DeVane, a gifted saxophone player from Fernandina Beach. A recent graduate from Fernandina Beach High School, DeVane, accepted the award during the AIJF’s Big Band Bash back in February. DeVane satin with the Dynamic Les DeMerle Orchestra, featuring vocalist Bonnie Eisele, for a couple of numbers. Says DeMerle, “Cam is a talented young sax player and should have a fine career as a professional musician!”
The Amelia Island Jazz Festival is much more than music. DeMerle and Eisele offer education and scholarship programs to expose young people to the art of jazz, while motivating more students to pursue jazz as a musical endeavor. Featuring workshops led by master musicians for elementary school, middle school, and high school students, more than 2,000 area students attend this program each year.
The Amelia Island Jazz Festival kicks off with a free afternoon “Jazz Party” concert at the Atlantic Recreation Center on Sunday, October 2 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. featuring the University of North Florida 21-piece JE2 Orchestra directed by Dennis Marks. excitement and vitality of great jazz. The festival presents worldclass jazz in many styles, including swing, bebop, Dixieland, big band, Latin, and contemporary. During the weeklong festival, held in October each year, music is performed by jazz greats as well as fresh, up-and-coming young talent. Performances are staged in several venues around Amelia Island, offering fresh, jazz-centric settings. The goal of the Amelia Island Jazz Festival is to help preserve the American art form, jazz, by increasing the exposure and awareness of the music genre to the general public. She will lead the trio at the Jams, and Lawrence Buckner, a seasoned player and jazz educator, will be featured on bass,” says DeMerle. “Our 2022 scholarship winner, 18-year-old sax player, Cameron DeVane, will host the Jams, that will also feature our 2021 scholarship winner, trumpet player Wyatt Bruno. In addition, you never know who’s going to show up to jam with these talented musicians!” Late Nite Jam is held 10 p.m. to midnight. Captain Patrick Toohey, U.S. Navy SEAL (Ret), will be the guest speaker at the 8th annual Navy SEAL Foundation Patriot Day Luncheon on September 11. Reservations and tickets are available for the luncheon to be held from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club on Bill Melton Road. Captain Toohey enlisted in the Navy and graduated from BUD/S training in August 1970. He graduated from Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island., in 1978 and was commissioned an Ensign. He retired on September 1, 2001, as a Captain after 30-plus years of service. Captain Toohey served in underwater demolition units and several SEAL teams during his decades of service, first as a team member, and eventually as an executive officer and commanding officer. His shore duty assignments included Joint Special Operations Command, Naval Special Warfare Group, and as a professor/Special Operations Chair at the U.S. N aval War College in Newport. In retirement, he serves as a consultant to various government and private sector agencies to promote the operational readiness and safety of the active duty Special Operations community. SIXTH ANNUAL TRINITY LOVE HOBLIT FOUNDATION
Trinity Hoblit was born with a rare form of primordial dwarfism. Although small in stature, she had an enormous spirit that captured the hearts of everyone she met! At age nine, Trinity was diagnosed with multiple brain aneurysms. She passed away on June 30, 2015 at age 14. Trinity was an advocate of organ donation, and with her family’s support, she gave life to three donor recipients after her death. These recipients are alive today as a result of Trinity, and the Hoblits’ continue to bless others through the foundation.

Susan McCarthy’s grandparents lived in a trailer park when she was a young girl and visiting them was one of her favorite things to do. “It was a wonderful place,” says Susan. “I always remember how the neighbors and families would get together. Alexis Buchanan, owner of Creative Edge Carpet Binding, lived in Fernandina Beach when she was young. While she was attending college in Statesboro, Georgia, her mother moved back to Fernandina. “My mom is a true local. Her family has lived on Amelia Island for five generations, since the 1800s! During a college break, I came down to be with my mom and I never left,” says Alexis. “The best thing about my job is knowing the work I do makes a difference in the lives of my customers, in the community, and in our environment. From repurposing carpet remnants into useful throw rugs to repairing rugs that are damaged or fraying, I’m able to save large amounts of material from going to waste in the landfill and save homeowners time and money. The fun part is when I’m called on to make unique and custom rug creations. I’ve made octagons, dog bones, and once, I created a rug shaped like a guitar! The most satisfying part is putting the new or repaired rug in place and seeing the difference it makes in the room,” says Alexis. When Alexis isn’t working, she loves spending time with her three-year-old daughter. She’s also a part-time student at FSCJ pursuing an A.S. in Architectural Design and Construction Technology. Each year, WON chooses a charity to support throughout the year, funded by their annual fundraiser. In 2021 and 2022, the annual fundraiser mawas a Hoedown, with a country-andwestern theme. This year’s Hoedown will be held on November 5 at the Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach, with proceeds benefiting Micah’s Place, a certified domestic violence shelter serving Nassau County. “Last December, we presented Micah’s Place with a check for $10,000, along with toys and gift cards for the families served there,” says Joy Kemp, WON’s president. “We chose Micah’s Place again this year for our charitable project.”
WON is open to any women of Nassau County who are 18 years and older. “We recently started a Membership Welcome Coffee,” says Kemp. “This activity is designed to introduce new BY KAREN MILLER

Women of Nassau (WON) was the brainchild of Carolyn Glaza, a member of the Newcomers Club who was looking to start an intimate women’s group of like-minded community members interested in social and service activities. In January 2019, WON became a not-for-profit volunteer organization dedicated to enriching the Nassau County community by fostering relationships and generosity through its membership and supporting women in Nassau County.

But Bartels life wasn’t always easy. Her beloved father died when she was 8-years-old, and she was sent to a Catholic boarding school. “When my father died, my mother remarried and moved to Atlanta. I was sent to the Convent of Mary

Dee Dee Bartels is a Renaissance woman, whose love of the sea and coastal communities planted the seeds that would form her fascinating life. At 99 years-young, Bartels is still a force to be reckoned with, with no slowing down in sight.

“I grew up in a house with no other children, so I spent most of my time with adults,” says Bartels. “My father had a huge library, and I spent a lot of time in there, reading about all sorts of things. And we sailed whenever we could.”
Immaculate, a Catholic boarding school in Key West,” says Bartels. “I did well in school, but I didn’t come out of school with any idea of what I wanted to do. I had so many interests.”
Bartels was born in Victoria, British Columbia, but eventually the family moved to Miami, where her father was one of the charter members of the Key Biscayne Yacht Club.
Bartels claims it was her mother who blessed her with “magical thinking,” encouraging her to believe that anything is possible in this“Myworld.mother used to read me fairy tales, and made me believe in things I couldn’t see,” says Bartels. “The unknown, it was magical to me, a special way of looking at the world.”
Coming from a family of seafaring folks, Bartels learned to sail at a very young age, and she developed a keen interest in marine biology. That interest would eventually lead her into the shrimping industry. Bartels and her husband moved to Fernandina Beach in the mid-1950s with their two boys in tow. However, her husband’s work took them to California and Germany, before they returned to Fernandina. Bartels worked as a shrimp boat captain and owned two shrimp boats, Sunrise and Lady Wesa, becoming completely enmeshed in Fernandina’s coastal community. “When we first moved to Fernandina, a friend took me out on a shrimp boat,” says Bartels. “I fell completely in love with shrimping, and ThFernandina.”efirstIsle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival took place in 1964, featuring the Shrimp Boat Races for the promotion of tourism. But many people don’t realize that Bartels was the force behind the inaugural festival.
Over the course of her long life, Dee Dee Bartels has made an impact on Fernandina as a shrimp boat captain, preservationist, and a driving force behind the start of the Shrimp Festival.
So, what’s next for this Renaissance woman? “I told my son I wanted to buy a van and drive all over the country in it,” laughs Bartels. “He was not amused by that idea.” Bartels’ book, Island Rhythms, is available locally at Story and Song Bookstore Bistro at 1430 Park Avenue. 904-310-6886 • www.lRIS-FINANCIAL.com

“Some people thought I was crazy when I suggested we have shrimp boat races,” laughs Bartels. “But we did it, and it was a huge success. Everyone turned out to watch the races. The New York Times even wrote an article about it.”

Bartels was also a community activist, fighting to preserve Old Town and to keep the railroad company from tearing down the depot on Centre Street. The railroad gave the depot to the Historical Society, and they in turn gave it to the City of Fernandina Beach. She was also president of the local Historical Society and started the Restoration Commission.
“In total, I’ve written over a thousand poems,” says Bartels. “I’m always working on something new, either poetry, stories, or paintings.”
After being captain and owner of shrimp boats in Fernandina, a contract with the marine division of the Smithsonian led her to another island, Carriacou, one of the Grenadine Islands.
Bartels’ experience in Carriacou so moved her that she wrote a book about her life there, called Island Rhythms
The book contains Bartels’ art and poetry, and her reflections on island life. She’s also written other books, one called Christopher’s Stories, dedicated to her grandson, and a book about aging.
“I moved there in 1980 and started my own business, West Indian Sea Farms Limited, for raising crabs and sea moss,” says Bartels. “I fell in love with that island, too. It was so untouched. The people were wonderful. I lived there for 11 years.”

When adding screening to your landscape, don’t forget reliable and beautiful old favorites like Viburnum and Podocarpus, which have striking new varieties available.

An upright plant, it’s perfect as a hedge or accent. It grows 10 to 15 feet in height and 3 to 4 feet in width. In early spring, fertilize after shaping, before first flush. Plant in full sun to part-shade. Garden Clouds “Copper Glow” Lonicera is a lovely evergreen alternative to the Boxwood. It is disease-resistant with a rounded shape. It thrives in sun or shade (more sun, more copper). This plant should be available this spring.
Now is the time to start deciding what bulbs, rhizomes, and other additions you would like to make to your spring garden. They need to be planted by October to get a head start on spring.

In another month, we’ll be at the beginning of the gardening season. Now is the time to start thinking of old and new ways to improve your gardens. Many old-time shrubs like Viburnum, Podocarpus, and the Pittisporum ( with its orange blossom scent) are reliable and beautiful and serve a purpose in the landscape. Varieties are available in large, compact, and dwarf sizes. Improvements have been made to some of these shrubs.
Advanced Party is a fragrant early season producer of an abundance of large, lavender-pink flowers that are 6 inches in width with lime green throats. It produces up to four branches and a 30 bud count. One of the first Daylilies to bloom, it blooms from early to mid-summer. An elegant Spider Lily is called Free Wheelin’. It produces gigantic creamy yellow flowers up to 9 inches wide, with red-wine eyes circling emerald green throats. It reaches 34 inches tall, with up to six branches and 48 buds. The Coppertop Sweet Viburnum is a recent addition. This low-maintenance upright evergreen shrub features dark maroon to copper new growth that comes with each Coppertoppruning.has clusters of white fragrant flowers nestled atop dark green glossy foliage in May and June. This beauty has year-round appeal and grows 8 to 10 feet tall and up to 6 feet wide, making it a wonderful screening shrub. The Coppertop color continues after pruning in any season, and it is fastgrowing with a compact habit. This easycare shrub attracts birds and butterflies. Plant it in full sun to part-shade. (The more sun, the more copper color.) Mood Ring Podocarpus (a Japanese yew) is another Southern Living evergreen. It is a narrow screening plant with dense foliage. This easy-care beauty shows off its stunning bronzy pinkish-red new growth in spring and fall, then turns green as it matures. Mood Ring is a lowmaintenance shrub that tolerates full sun.
Copper Glow has small glossy green leaves that can be pruned to any shape, but no pruning is required. This shrub grows 2 to 3 feet high and wide. Now it’s time to get out of the shrubs and into the flower garden. I love Daylilies, and as their name implies, they are rather short-lived. However, I came across a bunch of re-blooming beauties that just might fill the bill in your garden.

Midwesterners Cathie and Jeff Pauly had long considered a coastal home, but they hadn’t found the right location. Cathie tells the story of waiting in a doctor’s office and thumbing through a Southern Living magazine. The issue featured a Southern Living Idea House that had been built on Crane Island. She loved the ideas and the concept of Crane Island. She and her husband were familiar with Amelia Island, and when the opportunity to build on Crane Island in its early stages became possible, they were all in.

businesses. While Cathie loves design, Jeff enjoys car racing and owns the Flying Stag Racing Team, which races historic Porsche cars exclusively.
The house is ideally situated on a lot that is close to the Crane Island clubhouse and on the Amelia River. It is part of the Crane Island development built around Alice Park. The landscaped park stretches from the Amelia River to a marsh on the east side of the island. The house is all about white. The bright clear white of the exterior contrasts with the lush green marsh that surrounds it. Wrap-around porches maximize the expansive views of the Amelia River.

For the past 40 years, the Pauly’s have lived in Middleton, Wisconsin, a suburb of Madison. They also have a lake home on Lake Winnebago, where generations of the family have had homes. Cathie taught at the University of Wisconsin and was a diagnostician at the Learning and Behavior Clinic at UW Hospital and Clinics before opening a private clinic in Madison.Whennot working, her passion is design, and she has been hands-on with every house the Pauly’s have lived in. The Crane Island house is the fourth house she has designed. Jeff, a man of many talents, is involved in a variety of entrepreneurial

The front entrance, through steel factory-style doors, opens into a shotgun foyer that stretches to the back of the house, offering the tease of the exciting spaces throughout the house.
The house, with its inviting porches, steel factory-style doors, and cabinet details creates a mix of modern and traditional. The generous first floor 12-foot ceilings allow for tall doors, well-proportioned transoms, and custom crown moldings that would not have been possible with a shorter ceiling.

Cathie had the idea for the bookcase mural after first seeing something similar in New York. The portrait of Cenci, which hangs in the National Gallery, is a long-time favorite of Cathie’s. She worked with Juniper Books and Johnson Cabinets from Jacksonville to create a unique and stunning bookcase mural. The built-to-order hand-forged handmade steel doors reminiscent of factory doors are a critical element in the aesthetic of the house. Working closely with Pickett Construction and JP McClellan, seven hand-made custom doors were installed,

The Pauly house is one of many beautiful custom homes currently being built by Pickett Construction and the team on Crane Island. The Pauly’s couldn’t be happier with their new home and community.
Oscar Dulce, interior designer with Star Sanford Design, based in Jacksonville Beach, worked closely with Cathie in creating spaces that were uncluttered with elegant, welldesigned furnishings and artwork. The goal was a minimalistic look with a touch of traditional style. They selected furnishing and accessories with interesting details, textures, and patterns. Furniture from Sublime Original is ideally suited for the broad, river-view porches. Throughout the house, dramatic light fixtures add both light and interesting design elements. “Lighting is like the jewelry of a home, and the fixtures picked by us and Cathie compliment the style of the house,” says Dulce.

Cathie and Jeff have two adult children and four grandchildren. Cathie is especially proud of the unique bunk room designed for children that sleeps 12. Cathie describes the project, “I worked on the house for over a year, really trying to imagine how we would use it and live in it. The porches play to the water and the park. I love the sense of community built into the Crane Island concept.”

Wicked Bao
On this day, Patti Burch and I were there when the doors opened at 4 p.m.—early, we thought—but within minutes, the bar and tables were full of devotees who were also waiting for Ms. Wu to open her doors. With its fast casual Asian street food, Wicked Bao is indeed popular. Many times, my family and I have enjoyed reading the menu and specials on the wall, ordering and paying, sitting on the porch to eat, and exiting down the whimsical ramp. Wicked Bao will be five years old on December 20. The menu doesn’t change, but chef’s specials do change seasonally.
Twice yearly, she spends a week at a favorite or a new foody place. After this year’s jaunt to Asheville, North Carolina, she will unveil her fall chef’s specials in September. It’s possible, she says, that one special will be seared duck breast with jasmine rice and spinach-citrus salad. We began with small plates: the house-made Chongqing spice on the flash-fried corn quarters lit the pilot light on our palates. “Is that octopus?” we asked. Brie the bartender said no, but they do offer it. It’s one of Nathalie’s favorites. All dumplings, pot stickers, and spring rolls are made in-house. Among the noodles & rice dishes, the Crispy Pork Chop Rice is the bestseller. My favorite is Ahi Tuna Poke over Crispy Jasmine Rice Tots. The tots are available by themselves with sauces, if you prefer. Tasting the Beef Noodle Soup, Patti reminisced about the time her daughter and she drove home from Jacksonville in a bad storm, arriving in Fernandina cold, wet, and hungry. They went to Wicked Bao, the only place open, where Nathalie served them her beef noodle soup – how the beef and cinnamon stick warmed them that day! So, what’s a bao? Rhyming with how, bao are Chinese steamed bread rolls with vegetable or meat fillings. They are as varied as the regions of China. Nathalie’s bao are Taiwan-style openfaced dumplings. Find your favorite(s) by trying all of them, with exciting flavors from Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Japan, and Singapore.
With noodles, poke bowls, rice dishes, and of course, baos, or Chinese dumplings, Wicked Bao serves delicious Asian street food and specialty drinks in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
When grown children are in town, this is where they want to go first. They and we remember good times at Wicked Bao.

Wicked Bao is a great bar, too. Sapporo beer is on tap, while Lucky Buddha, Tsingtao, Singha, and Tiger are bottled beers. We chose sake, but it was not an easy choice. Pineapple-basil sake sangria complemented all of the bold flavors. The fall sake sangria will be mango-tamarind.
Driving to Wicked Bao in its tucked away historic Fernandina location fills me with anticipation. Ahead of me are hours of convivial atmosphere, playful flavors, and signature drinks. The building on the corner of North 2nd Street and Calhoun Street looks festive with its lanterns and colors, but at night, it’s magical! Seeing it gleam from within makes me eager to see owner Nathalie Wu’s warm smile and try what she and her staff are offering this evening.

As my treatment wrapped up, no words could describe how amazing my face was feeling. My treatment included an SPF treatment, so I was ready to take on the rest of the day. As I sat down to the task, I took notice of the attention to care and detail—from orchids abundant and peaceful music to a cozy chair—I sat back and smiled knowing it was going to be the best hour of the week.Next, Laurie greeted me with a warm smile and showed me to the treatment room. Laurie started her career in marketing and sales with skincare companies, and as she learned more about the benefits, she wanted to get hands-on and help others meet their goals. She became a licensed aesthetician over 15 years ago and worked at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island for five years when she moved to Amelia Island. In 2017, it was time to branch out, and L.
