President’s Note Hello fellow Corriedale breeders. Congratulations on 100 years of Corriedales in the U.S.! Fall is upon us and show season is winding down. Hopefully, many of you are inspecting a new crop of fall born lambs, deciding who will be retained in the flock and marketing the rest. I would encourage fellow breeders to be harsh in your selection criteria and only keep those animals that will be a benefit to your flock. I know here in New England we are seeing strong prices for lambs and an unbelievable market for wholesale and retail lamb cuts. Be aggressive in your marketing strategies and get the best price possible for your lambs! I would like to thank all of the individuals that have helped make this year a memo-
rable one for the breed. From incredible attendance at our annual banquet to record prices at the sale, it certainly was a successful event. I have heard of many strong Corriedale shows across the country over the summer, as well. I look forward to continuing the celebration this fall as we host our National Show in Louisville, Ky. at the NAILE. In closing I would like to encourage Corriedale Breeders to raise the type of sheep that works for their situation. Not all types fit into every operation. This is one of the strong points of our breed; versatility. Just because you prefer one style of Corriedale does not mean that a different style has no value. I do encourage all breeders to raise Corriedales that have outstanding breed character. Let’s not become just another breed of sheep, let’s set our breed apart from the rest and show people how great the sheep and the breeders are. Sincerely, Nick Miniter
Congratulations to our Corriedale Breed on their 100th anniversary!

She shows throughout the Mid-South region with the help of her grandfather, Robert Bagwell and her parents, Dan and Laura Faulkner. Leah began her interest at nine years of age after watching her older brother, Knox, show Corriedales and she told her grandfather she “wanted to show sheep!” In 2009, in her first showmanship class, she placed first. She has learned to trim from her grandfather and from watching and learning at fairs from others. She showed at the 2013 NAILE Junior Show in Louisville, Ky. for the first time and plans on showing again this fall. Leah Beth feels that showing lambs has given her the chance to meet new people, make new friends and compete with other farm kids from around the nation. She wants to improve her Corriedale flock by purchasing high quality lambs from different breeders across the U.S. Her future intentions are to continue upgrading her flock, to compete in as many shows as possible and begin to participate in future Corriedale sales. Ohio Club Awards Ewes to Chloe Wylie The Ohio Corriedale Club is promoting the advantages of the Corriedale breed to 4-H and FFA members by offering two ewes to a member to start their breeding sheep projects. The Vineyard Family of Blue Rock and the Heibertshausen Family of Republic donated the two Corriedale ewes awarded this year. Youth members wrote an essay stating their experience and why they would like to start a Corriedale flock. The winner of the essay contest for the Corriedale ewes for this year is Chloe Wylie of Bryan, Ohio. Chloe is the daughter of Dana and Michelle Missler and is in the Stars of 4-H Club. She is 10 years old and has experience in 4-H with livestock projects. Chloe showed the ewes at her county fair and at the Ohio State Fair Junior and Open Class Breeding Sheep Shows in August. She will care for them through the lambing season, hopefully including the offspring in her 4-H projects in the following years. Chloe wrote in her essay that she is eager to start a breeding sheep project and lambing season is her favorite time of year.

Larry Mead, left, receives the Doak Award at the Midwest Stud Ram Sale in 2013. He is pictured here with Bill Doak and Kathy Mead.
Larry Mead to retire as manager of Midwest Stud Ram Sale On Oct. 7, 2014 the Missouri Sheep Producers, sponsors of the annual Midwest Stud Ram Sale, announced the retirement of Larry Mead. Mr. Mead, a titan of the industry, has managed the Midwest Stud Ram Sale for the last 50 years. “On behalf of the Missouri Sheep Producers, I would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Larry Mead for his more than 50 years of service,” said Henry Shultz, chairman of the Midwest Stud Ram Sale committee. “Larry has grown the Midwest Stud Ram Sale into the largest purebred sheep sale in North America – a tremendous accomplishment.” “Larry Mead has played a key role in the Missouri Sheep Industry. We appreciate all the time and effort he put into both the Missouri Sheep Producers organization and Midwest Stud Ram Sale,” said Sarah Gehring, president, Missouri Sheep Producers. Beginning immediately, Heartland Livestock Services will assume management of the nearly $2 million annual purebred The

sheep and goat sale. The Heartland team has a combined 100 years of experience in the livestock industry, members include: Curt Overcash of Ottawa, IL, Karey Claghorn of Milo, IA, Bret Oelke of Barrett, MN, Millie Moore of Indianola, IA, Brandan Bruce of Indianola, IA, and Carrie TaylorKelly of Stuart, IA. Heartland Livestock Services has been vital to the operation of the Midwest Stud Ram Sale for nearly a decade. “We are thrilled to have an experienced team of professionals, who are passionate about both the sale and the industry, accept full leadership of this premier sheep event,” commented Shultz. “We look forward to creating an innovative environment in which the sale can grow and flourish over the next years and decades,” said Curt Overcash, managing partner of Heartland Livestock Services. “We are honored to have an opportunity to manage the foremost marketplace for sheep genetics in North America.” “The ability for sheep enthusiasts to interact and network at this sale makes it

incredibly unique,” said Karey Claghorn of Heartland Livestock Services. “We are dedicated to improving upon this already fantastic event, as folks continue to gather from all across the country to meet and compete.” Dates for the 2015 Midwest Stud Ram Sale are June 22-27. More information will be available soon at www.midwestramsale. com.
Mead grows sale from 123 head to 2500 and successful 50 year run By Larry Mead Reprinted from Midwest Sale Catalogue, 2013
Early Midwest Sale Organization The Sale was managed and operated by the Ag Department under the auspices of the old Missouri Purebred Sheep Breeders Association. Vic Gray of the Missouri Agriculture Department, succeeded Rollo Singleton as Sale Manager until the sale was discontinued in 1962 due to a lack of entries…less than 100 head. Later that year at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago Bill Doak got together with the Northeast Missouri Trio to suggest that the Midwest Sale be revived in 1963…that they approach Perry Ewing to get him to agree to have Larry E. Mead manage the sale…get it going again. These plans were materialized and the sale was started up again with 123 head of Hampshires, Southdowns and Suffolks. From those meager beginnings the sale grew into the largest registered sheep in Page 35
the world! The first Midwest Sale was patterned off the Eastern Stud Ram Sale with the initial sales being held at the University of Missouri in Columbia at the old livestock pavilion. Within a few years, the show and sale was switched to the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia. By 1969 the Midwest Sale had increased to about 600 head and the event was switched back to Columbia to be held in the new MU Livestock Center. Numbers quickly increased to 750 head and soon exceeded the capacity of MU Livestock Center. The sale returned to the State Fairgrounds. An unfortunate scheduling glitch at the state fairgrounds forced the moved of the Midwest Sale. The new Midway Exposition Center near Columbia hosted the 1989, 1990 and 1991 Sales. Numbers had increased to over 1,500 and outstripped the Midway Expo Center capacity. Thus the sale returned to the state fairgrounds and numbers soon reached 2,500. Breeds offered included Hampshires, Polled Dorsets, Suffolks, Southdowns, Shropshires, Montadales, Corriedales, Rambouillets and Columbias. The 1988 sale saw us create a new sale category…as the first ever wether sire was held with Duron Howard as the judge. The first champion was Larry Crego Hampshires out of Colorado that sold for $8,500, and a whole new class of sale sheep was kicked off! With a couple of years, wether sire sales were being held everywhere! Initially, classes were divided into blues, red and whites, with any entries grading white being automatically sifted. Blues and reds were printed with ribbon brands. This system was discontinued because some buyers felt the reds were not good enough. Thus we started placing only the top end of classes and drawing for sale order on the balance of acceptable entries. The American Corriedale Association will be eternally grateful for all the devotion and dedication Larry Mead has given to the sheep industry!!

Corriedales With Style!
In Remembrance Laura Gail Sublett When Laura Gail Sublett was just settling into town, she would stroll down Atkins Road, past the cornfields, to meet her new neighbors for a game of cards. Times changed, and the cornfields along Atkins Road gave way to a strip mall, but one thing never changed: Mrs. Sublett played bridge with that same group of neighborhood women every week for 30 years. Some members died or moved away, but she rarely missed a game. Laura Gail (Baumgartner) Sublett of Eldon, Mo., formerly of Columbia, died April 26, 2014, in Jefferson City. She was 83. She was born Feb. 26, 1931 in a farmhouse outside Millersburg to Benjamin H. and Pauline (Coats) Baumgartner. The school she attended was just three miles from her house – a trip she made daily on her favorite horse, Nancy Bell. More than 70 years later, after Mrs. Sublett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, those memories still came easy. “You could always say, ‘Mom, do you remember riding Nancy Bell to school?’” her daughter, Linda Hutton, said. “The answer was always, ‘Yes.’” Her first date with Duane Sublett, the man she would marry, was in 1947. He was fresh home from the Navy and living in Stephens. “I had a car and we picked up another couple,” he said. “We went to a show in

downtown Columbia, probably only cost about 25 cents, and then we went to get ice cream.” After two years of ice skating, roller-skating and more movies, they married in 1949. Mrs. Sublett’s family remembers how close she stayed with everyone, whether it was distant cousins or faraway aunts and uncles. “She was just a very caring, hardworking woman who felt very deeply for her family,” Hutton said. During her time in Columbia, Mrs. Sublett worked as an office manager for Sheep Breeder Magazine, where she dedicated much of her time. “Back in the day, when we worked for someone, we ‘worked’ for someone,” Duane Sublett said, laughing. “They have a big sheep sale once a year in Sedalia that still goes on, and she was involved with that for Sheep Breeder up until 1990.” For years, Gail and her close friend, Prissie Throckmorton from Levelland, Texas checked in the majority of the sheep at Sedalia. Gail worked for Rollo Singleton when he served as the American Corriedale Association Executive Secretary 1948-1969 and very graciously served the American Corriedale Association as interim secretary from August 1996 until the current secretary was hired in 1997. When the couple moved to Eldon, Gail joined the board of the Rocky Mount Fire Protection District and the Rocky Mount Lions Club. Mrs. Sublett is survived by her husband, Duane; two daughters, Linda (Bob) Hutton and Amy Sublett; one brother; a granddaughter and great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her brother, Bennie Baumgartner, died earlier. The ACA extends it’s deepest sympathies to the Sublett family.

In Remembrance Lanny Joe Crawford Lanny Joe Crawford, 72, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, died March 13, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City surrounded by his family. Born Oct. 6, 1941, in Birmingham, he was the only child of Lyle John and Pauline E (Edwards) Crawford. On Dec. 26, 1966, he married Johanna Ruth Larson at Swedesburg Lutheran Church where he became a member. He graduated from Birmingham High School in 1959. He was a standout athlete in baseball and basketball and was named Athlete of the Year his senior year. He had been promised to play baseball in college but the baseball program was delayed and began after he graduated from Northeast Missouri State. He earned his B.S. from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in agriculture and Industrial Arts in 1963, while he was teaching at Kirksville High School. While officially still student teaching in Missouri he was named Honorary Chapter Farmer by the FFA Chapter. He taught in Clarence, Iowa, from 19631964 and then in Moravia, Iowa, from 19641966. He taught at New London Community Schools from 1966-1997. He continued his schooling and earned his Masters Degree in Industrial Arts from Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State) in 1969. He served on the Geode Education Association Board. He established the former Industrial Arts New London Facility and taught hundreds of 7-12 graders carpentry, drafting, wood working and welding. He also initiated a computer aided drafting program. He built his own styled “pre-fabricated” home, with plans designed by himself and his wife, with his talented students. They built much of the home in the New London shop and then finished construction on site. He was active in 4-H and went on to mentor many youth in 4-H programs – and young and old in open class exhibitions. His 4-H and farming experience began with his Page 45
father, Lyle Crawford, on their “Fertile Acres” farm in Iowa’s Van Buren County which once boasted 10 top Corriedale breeders. Lyle gave Lanny two Corriedale ewes 65 years ago and they began their venture of Crawford’s Corriedales. The duo went on to win top honors from Minnesota to Texas and Florida, and from California to the Big E on the East Coast. He had a number of champions over the years at the National Corriedale Show & Sale and the National Livestock Exposition in Louisville and earned 25 straight champions at the Iowa State Fair. Together they received the Guthrie Award in 1971 and Lyle received the Guy Green Award Lifetime Corriedale Breeder honor in 1979, with Lanny receiving the Guy Green Lifetime Corriedale Breeder in 2011 Award at the National Show banquet in Eaton, Ohio. Lanny sold his top breed stock to Peru, Columbia and Mexico and to the famous Allen Sheep Farm of Martha’s Vineyard Island. He played a key role in the establishment of the Singleton Traveling Trophy in Chicago and later Louisville in the name of the former Corriedale secretary, Rollo Singleton. Lanny served on the Corriedale Board of directors. He was able to continue his flock with the help of Steve Blow Jr. and Steve Blow Sr. of New London, Gary Bonar of Keosauqua, Richard Woline of Mount Pleasant, Craig Growthe of Swedesburg, the support of the Darrell Mullin (Derek and Jason) family of Mount Pleasant, the late Mark Fitzpatrick, New London, the Adam family of Fairfield and many others, including Illinois Corriedale breeders Rich Myers and Ryan Craig. Showing sheep afforded him with the opportunity to travel the country and Lanny loved taking his family to zoos,

circuses, museums and many parks. Lanny was a loving husband, father, grandfather and son. He was proud to have been named Father of the Year by KILJ when his children were in grade school. He was also proud of his many students and their accomplishments. He was tickled whenever someone would acknowledge the technical and life skills he had shared. He never quit fighting and in spite of many health challenges maintained a great sense of humor and inspirational attitude and was always supportive and a source of tremendous strength. He made caring for his mother-in-law, Betty Larson, who survives, a priority. He continued to be young at heart. In his later years he delighted in entertaining family and friends with his mechanical and musical toys, and collections of seashells and gems. He also enjoyed several years of ceramic painting and always welcomed nature drives – including a trip to the mountains and then a wild animal safari vacation just last summer. He will always live on in the hearts of his devoted wife; two daughters, Karla Crawford Kerr (Michael D. Kerr Jr.) of Mount Pleasant and Katherine R. Crawford of Woodridge, Ill. and his two beloved grandchildren. Memorials were designated to the Easter Seals Iowa, New London School for the establishment of the LJC Promise Award (for a talented industrial arts student) and the Swedesburg Lutheran Church.
The ACA extends it’s deepest sympathies to the Crawford family. A message from Karla: Thanks to our incredible Corriedale friends for your support and kindness. Marcia Craig and Dixie Monson, our hearts go out to you and we love you both. Thanks to Rich Myers for keeping Dad inspired and for your untiring energy and presence. Ryan Craig and Gary Craig, thanks for coming out to the farm and sorting, listening and advising. And to Ryan for giving Dad some great memories at the end of his sheep career. Thanks to Marcia, Ryan, John Merlau, Jacob Reister, Darin Bauck and to the rest of the 2011 Executive Board for honoring Dad with the Guy Green Award and acknowledging his life’s work. And thanks to those breeders for coming from Ohio, Minnesota, Missouri and Illinois to see and purchase our stock, including Robinson Farms, Marie McSparen, the Stegall Family, Cori Craig, Martin Hicks, Gary Craig, Ryan Craig, Strawberry Ridge Farm (with Joan and John naming their new Crawford stud ram – Lancelot – aka Lanny), and to those from many years past. Selling the sheep was the toughest thing I’ve ever done – next to saying, “until I see you again” to my dad. Thank you for helping this hurt less as we know his legacy continues in your flocks and in our Corriedale history. We are blessed to have you in our lives and we cannot thank you enough for the purple ribbon memories.
