President’s Note
Greetings from the great state of North Dakota – and we are one of the few places where you can endure record snowfall and below average temperatures for nearly half the year, slip into a severe drought/ exceptionally hot summer, receive some nice rains in August (not enough rain to get us out of the drought) and having it look like June in mid-September. One thing we know for sure is that the Corriedale breed can withstand these extreme conditions. This August I was able to exhibit at the Wyoming and Nebraska State Fairs. It was great to meet up with our sheep friends and Corriedale families: Phillippis, Heiberthausens, Vinings, Coers and new breeder, Cheryl Gehrig of Montana. These two fairs are very agriculture oriented – they both have a great sheep show and the Corriedales ended up being named supreme at Wyoming and Reserve Supreme in Nebraska. There has been a lot of interest in our breed from both the commercial and purebred breeders in our area looking for thick, complete sheep with Corriedale breed type and a Corriedale type fleece. I know I sound like a broken record – but our breed has so much to offer to so many sectors – we are not just a show sheep breed and it’s great that we have breeders choosing their style of Corriedales to fulfill their

wants and needs. It was exciting at our National Sale in Eaton, Ohio this past May. We added a natural yearling ewe class in which the ewe was shown in their natural look with minimal carding and Joana Friesz hand trimming. The high selling ewe of $2500 was sold to a hand spinner in Minnesota. We also started a wool show in which you can bring your own favorite fleeces – they were judged by Dr. Gary Ricketts. Both of these added classes have added value to our breed. The handspinners love the soft, lofty, bright Corriedale fleeces. The end of September I will be attending the North Country Fiber Fair in Watertown, SD and then off to the South Dakota Sheep Growers Convention, taking in a tour of the Faribault Woolen Mill in Faribault, Minn. The last trip before heading to Louisville in November, we will be attending the “Trailing of the Sheep” event in Sun Valley, Idaho. It is a spectacular festival that I encourage you to try to sometime attend. I hope everyone had a healthy, good summer. I wish to extend my sincere sympathy to the Dayle Waddington family in Dayle’s passing and also to the Kin Family in the passing of Scott’s wife, Krista. Our thoughts and prayers go out to these families. I would like to congratulate the couples on their weddings in October, Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Bauck of Minnesota and Mr. and Mrs. Kody Wolf of Ohio. In closing, I hope to see a lot of you in Louisville – safe travels and to those I won’t see – have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hope your lambing season is successful and see you at the 2018 National Corriedale Sale in Sedalia, Mo. in June. Joana Friesz The Corriedale EXTRA
Meet Hannah Petersen...
Hannah is the daughter of Dean and Jenny Petersen of Magnolia, OH. She is 14 yrs old and has previous experience in 4-H with livestock projects. Hannah participated in the Ohio Corriedale Club Give Away Ewe essay contest. She had a very good essay. Two yearling ewes, originally from Phillippi Corriedales flock Hanna h with her ewe la mb, Surprise were donated to her in April. She was in love with her new ewes at first site. She worked hard to care for and train the ewes. She named the ewes Sunrise and Sunset. The ewes had been exposed. The Saturday morning of the National Sale, Sunrise had given birth to a small set of twins. The first was too weak to survive. The other was weak and unable to nurse. The whole family worked to take care of the new mother and her lamb, later named Surprise. The mother was milked and the lamb hand fed until the lamb was able to eat on its own. Hard work and love paid off. The new mother and lamb began to thrive. A crash course in lambing had been learned. Hannah showed Sunrise at the Carroll Co. Fair along with market lambs and still projects. Hannah’s family went with her to the Ohio State Fair. She showed both ewes in the junior and senior classes with the help of her sister Deana. Grandparents were also present for the state fair. Hannah and Deana helped and learned from other Corriedale exhibitors. Hannah enjoyed her experience at the state fair and is interested in the lady’s lead class in the future. The ewes are home now with a ram. Dreams of winter lambing are on Hannah’s mind. She is excited and hoping to get a day off school for the new arrivals. Hannah is active in her school and church with sports and other activities. She and her family are great additions to the Corriedale family. They are hard working, loving individuals that are Hannah & Deana sh owing the ewes eager to learn and promote the breed.

Ohio awards ewes to 4-Hers, FFAers The Ohio Corriedale Club is promoting the advantages of the Corriedale breed to 4-H and FFA members by offering two ewes to a member to start their breeding sheep projects. Youth members wrote an essay stating their experience and why they would like to start a Corriedale flock. The winner of the essay contest is Brett Coopshaw of Wauseon in Fulton County. Brett is the son of Becky Coopshaw and is in the Pettisville FFA Chapter. He is 15 years old and has previous experience in 4-H and FFA with sheep and other livestock projects. Brett showed the ewes at the Fulton County Fair and at the Ohio State Fair Junior and Open Class Breeding Sheep Shows this summer. He will care for them through the lambing season, hopefully including the offspring in his FFA projects in the following years. Brett stated in his essay that he likes working with other 4-H and FFA members to start
Brett Coopshaw their own flocks. Brett is eager to work with the new Corriedale ewes and hopes to have a flock of more than 100 sheep in the future.

Summary Of Evaluations On Fall Ewe Lambs
~ In Memoriam ~ DAYLE WADDINGTON Dayle Waddington of Ukiah, Calif., passed away unexpectedly on May 12, 2017 at the age of 76. He was enjoying his routine morning coffee confab when he suddenly suffered a fatal stroke. Per his request, there were no services. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Donna, who as a pair were known and respected nationwide for their Corriedale and Natural Colored sheep. Most folks considered their Corriedales as the top flock in the nation for over a decade. Dayle began his sheep career as an FFA member in San Jose. It was here in the showring that he first met Donna Wilson; it was said that he couldn’t beat her, so he married her. They moved to Ukiah in 1962 where he started planting vineyards with his father and then continued with his brother, Dan. Dayle Waddington was an intensely competitive breeder and exhibitor, showing primarily at the California State Fair, the Cow Palace and the North American Show in Louisville. He also consigned each year to the Midwest Stud Ram Sale, as well as the National Corriedale Sales in the years when those events were not in Sedalia. This included trips to Massachusetts for the New England Sale. Always, win or lose, he was most gracious and unfailingly polite to everyone. Still another appealing aspect of Dayle was his obvious pride and respect for Donna. He always stepped aside to allow her the spotlight in her own right, as she served as President of the American Corriedale Association and was tapped to judge numerous major shows. Together, they posted impressive records. From 1990-2008 they had 26 National Champions - 16 rams and 10 ewes. They had both National Champion Ram Page 24
Dayle Waddington and Ewe at five National Show and Sales and one National Show plus nine consecutive years of at least one of the champions at the events those years. In 1999 they had the Champion Ram and the Champion Ewe at both the National Show and Sale and the National Show that same year. In 1993 and 1994 “Strait” was the National Show Champion, both as a lamb and a yearling, as well as “Crossfire” who accomplished this same feat in 2000 and 2001. IN 1999 “Rapid Fire” was the Supreme Champion Ram at the NAILE. In 2003 the ram “Hollywood” was the top selling Corriedale ram at $6,800 purchased by Kenneth and Claire Wolf of New York and that record stands yet today. In 1986 and 2000 the Waddingtons received the Outstanding Corriedale Breeder of the Year and then in 2008 were recognized as the Guy L. Green Award recipients. This unique couple had still another passion – rodeo. Annually, they would take a week-long vacation to attend the National The Corriedale EXTRA
Finals. For many years these were held in Oklahoma City and then in Las Vegas. Some years they had to rush home from the Louisville Show in order to turn around and get to those rodeos. Surviving Dayle in addition to Donna are two sons, Don and Dave; his brother, Dan; two sisters, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A Memorial Award is being created in Dayle’s honor at the American Corriedale Association. Donations may be sent to the ACA, designated for the Waddington Memorial, to Marcia Craig, ACA, P.O. Box 391, Clay City, IL 62824. The ACA extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Dayle Waddington. ~ ~ ~ KRISTA KIN Krista A. Kin, 29, of Wharton, Ohio passed away surrounded by family and friends at The University of Toledo Medical Center, Toledo Sept. 3, 2017. Krista was born on Oct. 30, 1987 in Findlay to Deb L. (Bowman) and Gary L. Brown. She married Scott A. Kin on May 5, 2012, who survives in Wharton, along with their children Jacob A. and Samantha A. Kin. She is also survived by her mother, Deb (Ron) Metzger and Gary (Deborah) Brown; a brother, Andrew (Kim) Brown; sisters, Kayla Brown and Kylie (Jared) Chaney; step-brothers and sisters, Candace (Kelby) Weaver, Chance Metzger, Missie (Tyson) Borkosky, Chris (Kernie) Deringer and Nancy (Scott) Wilson; and her maternal grandmother, Carol Bowman. Krista graduated from Riverdale High School with the class of 2006. She graduated from Owens Community College with a degree in dental hygiene. Shannah Harding of Honey Girl Farms Honey Girl Farms is a small business best known for its hand-dyed yarns produced in Gerald, Mo. and shipped all over the planet. What isn’t commonly known is that Shannah Harding, color artist and driving force behind Honey Girl Farms, started with bee hives and chickens – hence the name! Several years ago this knitter and spinner decided to add a few Corriedale sheep to the menagerie on the 10-acre farm she was living on. She went to the University of Wisconsin sheep shearing school and several dyeing classes and fell in love with the creative process that comes with bringing wool from sheep to socks.
FALL 2017
Experimenting with various types of dye and styles of applying the color to the yarn, she developed her own styles and really found her business niche. In planning for the future she knew that she would need a lot more room and lots more sheep, so along with her parents she moved her operation to the 50-acre farm in Gerald that they purchase for its ideal configuration for sheep and building her business. The new Honey Girl Farm has two houses and several buildings for sheep, with eight paddocks on 10 acres in the front of the houses and shops. Currently, there are between 25 and 30 sheep, mostly Corriedales,
Page 27
with a few Rambouillets and a new colored Merino ram. However, the center of most activity is the building called the shop. It houses a large workshop for dyeing yarn and from early in the morning until late at night her pots are cooking dye into the yarn. Each batch is unique, and the colors are added to the pot of yarn in a very specific order and timing to get the results she is looking for. Inspiration for the colors of yarn come from many places, but her favorites comes from shows and series with especially memorable characters like Dr. Who, Star Wars, Beauty and the Beast and one of her favorites, Harry Potter and Hogwarts, including the Fantastic Beasts. Her most recent and successful ‘Color ways’ are coming from the Outlander series. It is a series of books and now a series based on the stories by Diana Gabaldon, where the heroin goes back in time and has adventures in Scotland and around the world and throughout time. Shannah contacted a knitting pattern designer and asked if she would be interested in creating a pattern to go along with the new colors of yarn she was making. The idea took off like wildfire and when the knot along was announced the crocheters (people who crochet) wanted in on the fun, as well, so another designer was brought in to design some patterns for the crochet people. There are now three knit patterns and three crochet patterns and plenty of special colors to go along. The knit/crochet along started October 1 and the hoped for group was 500
Shanna Harding people to share the stories and experiences was now nearly 7000 people. Much of the yarn comes from woolen mills in England. She learned pretty quickly that one little farm cannot produce thousands of skeins of yarn a month. So, after much research into different yarn bases Shannah now offers her colors in various weights and blends, including several sock weights and blends of Merino Superwash yarn to make it easy to care for. Shannah is currently working with other ‘indie dyers’ to source yarns from local shepherds making it possible to send large amounts of wool to the mills knowing it has a market when it is finished. The dyers will then add their special touch of color and sell it worldwide to yarn shops and end users.
As we finish up with our fall lambing our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow Corriedale breeders. Good luck in your fall showing and with winter/spring lambing. Wishing everyone a blessed holiday season.
