From the desk of the ACA President State and county fairs are coming to a close in the Midwest and I would like to congratulate all those exhibitors who have spent their precision time and efforts to support the Corriedale breed. I also would like to wish those Corriedale breeders in the other parts of the U.S. much luck on their upcoming competitions! I remember going to the Illinois State Fair as a kid and was so excited that I could barely sleep the day before. I was always nervous and anxious to see if I was lucky enough to wear one of the blue Craig Corriedale shirts in group classes or flock for my Uncle Ed. If I remember right I would get the one that Cori didn’t want to show. Showing in that prestigious ring made me proud to be there. As I grew older and started my own flock of Corriedales I remember thinking how great it would be to raise sheep as well and compete with the likes of the Monsons, Cruits, Colemans, Ryan Craig Morans, Seelow, Woolevers, Ricketts, Bollivar, Morris, Yantis, Helton, President Emstroms, Meyers or even my uncle. To this day I take pride in raising ACA Corriedales and being able to exhibit our amazing breed across the Midwest. I challenge more of our breeders to attend these competitions as this is a great avenue to promote our breed and to encourage others to raise Corriedales. As a reminder to junior members who purchased futurity lambs, keep track of your points from the double point show in Ohio and any other events you have participated in. The junior show at the North American International Livestock Expo will also be considered a double point show. The following are the dates and events for NAILE: November 15 – Junior show November 16 – Open show, 5:00 p.m.. EST November 18 – My 40th birthday, big expensive presents are appreciated. As always don’t forget to post your experiences on the American Corriedale Association Facebook page! Ryan Craig, President

beautiful fleeces, calm demeanor, and great mothering ability. Since then, we have grown to a small flock of around 15 ewes. Though the Corriedales are our main show sheep, we also keep a flock of around 30 crossbred ewes that we breed for 4–H market lambs. Recently, Katie has bought two Shorthorn heifers that are our first venture with cattle in 20 years. Over the years we’ve shown Corriedales at NAILE, KILE, the All– American Junior Show, the national show this year in North Dakota and many local and county fairs. We have had a reserve ewe in the junior show at NAILE and have won Supreme Champion Overall ewes at both our local and county fairs. I also had the honor of representing our breed as the 2012–2013 American Corriedale Queen. We love traveling to

shows with our sheep, and have made a lot of memories with the Corriedales both in and out of the show ring. Our family has been keeping very busy as usual. I handed in my crown in August as the 2014 Washington County Agricultural Fair Queen and began my senior year of college. I’m currently beginning to apply to physician assistant programs for graduate school. Katie is working as a nurse litigator on Medicare cases for a law firm in Pittsburgh and she is really enjoying this new job. My mom is still doing her “semi–retirement” as a practicing large and small animal veterinarian. She had her first hip replacement after the national sale in May and is getting the second one done in December so that she can go to Louisville and be ready for lambing season. We are looking forward to taking ewes down to NAILE this year, and can’t wait to see everyone in Louisville!

Our only show!
Premier Breeder 2015 Indiana State Fair
We are pleased to announce that we have acquired the entire Seals Corriedale flock. We think this tremendous set of sheep presented an opportunity to add ewes with the same size, style and structure as our own existing brood ewes. Through more than fifty years of raising Corriedales this is the only complete flock that we felt truly would be a worthy addition to our existing program and accordingly thank Bill Seals for agreeing to allow us to purchase his flock. We also want to thank Tor Sorensen for assisting in this purchase and his care in bringing the sheep to Indiana for us. Watch for the offspring of these tremendous ewes in the coming years!

Ohio Club Awards Ewes to 4–Hers The Ohio Corriedale Club is promoting the advantages of the Corriedale breed to 4–H and FFA members by offering two ewes to a member to start their breeding sheep projects. The Romine Corriedales of Galion and the Peters’ Corriedales of Versailles donated the two ewes awarded this year. Youth members wrote an essay stating their experience and why they would like to start a Corriedale flock. The winner of the essay contest for the Corriedale ewes for this year is Luke Schroeder of Defiance, Ohio. Luke is the son of Brian and Krista Schroeder and is in the Premium Producers 4–H Club. He is 10 years old and has previous experience in 4–H with livestock projects. Luke will show the ewes at the Defiance County Fair and at the Ohio State Fair Junior and Open Class Breeding Sheep Shows in August. He will care for them through the lambing season, hopefully including the offspring in his 4–H projects in the following years. Luke stated in his essay that he is eager to learn about the breeding sheep project and the Corriedale breed. FALL 2015

Summary Of Evaluations On Fall Ewe Lambs
~ In Memoriam ~ Barbara Ellen (Prager) Billingsley Barbara Ellen (Prager) Billingsley passed away Thursday, April 9, 2015, in Converse County Memorial Hospital in Douglas, Wyoming at the age of 66. Barbara, daughter of Lawrence McFarlane and Sibyl June (Bruner) Prager, was born Sept. 18, 1948 in Douglas, Wy. The Blizzard of ’49 was spent in her Grandmother Mandy (McFarlane) Prager’s one–room homestead cabin at the Prager Ranch, 50 miles from the nearest town. A tarp was hung over the cabin’s thin door, trying to capture what little warmth the sheepherder’s stove provided. Water carried from the spring froze in the bucket each morning; if the baby’s mitten came off during the night, her hand would turn blue. Barb probably learned to dance before she could walk; her parent’s banjo/ accordion or piano music rocked her to sleep many nights. In fact, she never planned on learning to play, so she could always dance! She was a third–generation country–dance musician, featured on keyboards, bass, rhythm and lead guitars and vocals in numerous bands. She also played for numerous weddings, funerals, and church services. 1954 brought lots of firsts in Barb’s life. Electricity came to the ranch, and with it, new appliances and television. In 1954, the homestead cabin became the new Prager School, and a local girl, Laura Lee Bell, became Barb’s first teacher. She would stay with the family during the week then ride horseback 10 miles to her family’s ranch on weekends when weather allowed. Later, Evelyn Sands also stayed at the house while teaching. It’s hard to get out of doing homework when your teacher lives with you. A teacher in later years, Mildred Bennett, was a neighbor and when the FALL 2015
Barbara Billingsley snow was too deep for her Jeep, Lawrence used the snow tractor to take the kids to the teacher’s home on Monday mornings, then repeat the six–mile trip each Friday, bringing them home for the weekend. One day, Barb’s uncle, Bob Sturgeon, dropped off some bum lambs and Barb’s lifelong love of sheep was born. Each Prager child had a pet lamb that would follow its owner. You could tell which child was in the outhouse by which lamb was waiting outside. Barb showed registered Corriedale sheep in 4–H. She later became a member of the Wyoming Woolgrowers and Wyoming and American Corriedale Sheep Associations. Barbara married Dean Cundall on Sept. 10, 1967, at the Methodist Church in Douglas. For many years Dean worked on the 14 Ranch where he continued to raise cattle and Barb had her sheep. Barb was also an active member of the John Prince American Legion Auxiliary in Glendo and helped with branding meals up and down Horseshoe. Their adopted son, Gary Dean, Page 35
was born June 11, 1974; three days later they drove to Laramie to bring him home. For several years after her divorce from Dean, Barb and Gary lived in Glendo where she served as the Glendo Town Clerk and was a 4–H leader when Gary became old enough to join. She continued her love of music and also baked beautiful cakes for special occasions. On Nov. 1, 1986, Barbara married LaVern Billingsley in the Community Church at Glendo. In 1987, after her father, suffered a mild stroke resulting in partial blindness, Barb and Vern returned with her family to assist on the Prager Ranch. Barb and Vern became successful co–chairmen of the High Plains Old Time Country Music Festival from 1989 until 2002.. When asked how they thought they could make it profitable, Barb replied, “We’re ranchers. We live within our means.” They continued on the advisory committee until 2014 and were affiliated with the festival all of its 30 years.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; Lawrence and Sibyl; step–son Jim Billingsley; and step–son–in–law Bob Muhr. Survivors were her husband of 28 years, Vern Billingsley, of Douglas; son, Gary Cundall, of Washington, DC; step–daughters, Debbie (Rod) Heerton of Springview, Neb., Brenda Muhr of Mitchell, Neb., Melody (Todd) Kaufman of Holdredge, Neb., Katie (Sean) Reece of Fayetteville, N.C., Hope Billingsley of Gillette, Wy.; step–son, Robert (Sarah) Billingsley, of Bristol, Conn.; step–daughter–in–law, Brenda Billingsley, of Scottsbluff, Neb.; sister, Rita Prager, of Douglas; and brothers, Larry (Karen) Prager of Belle Fourche, S.D., and Norman (Edwina) Prager of Douglas. In addition, she is survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, step–grandchildren, and step– great–grandchildren. The American Corriedale Association extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Barbara Billingsley!
