CHANGING TIMES

CHANGING TIMES What an unusual year last year was. Regardless of who you are or where you’re from, you would have felt the profound effects of COVID-19. It felt like overnight, that the world we were so familiar with was flipped on its axis. With this shift came challenges all of us had yet to face, and it was especially tough to see our industry get hit hard. True to form, barbers and stylists around the world went to work at finding creative solutions to keep moving forward, adapting to the rapidly changing situation and using the time to perfect their craft. In order to adhere to government regulations and help curb the spread of the Coronavirus, our American Crew All Star Challenge events were cancelled for the first time in their long histories. But, that didn’t stop us from awarding the deserving winners and showcasing the multitude of diverse talent from around the world in new and innovative ways. This theme of change creating opportunities for innovation, has become the theme for this year’s magazine. ‘Changing Times’ tells the stories of the barbers and stylists who are reshaping our industry, celebrating the artists and their ability to evolve their techniques, services, and salons amidst difficult and peculiar times.

‘Changing Times’ tells the stories of the barbers and stylists who are reshaping our industry, celebrating the artists and their ability to evolve their techniques, services, and salons amidst difficult and peculiar times.

It explores their responses to the circumstances of 2020 which were beyond their control, and acts as a guide for us as we all move forward. Whether you’re waiting for a cut or relaxing between clients, I hope you find the content insightful and inspiring. Regards, David Raccuglia Founder of American Crew

THE KING OF 2020 W/ LUKE MUNN

AMERICAN CREW

CHANGING TIMES

It’s a glarey spring morning in Adelaide’s inner-eastern suburb of Kent Town. We’re driving to meet the newest American Crew All-Star Challenge winner, Luke Munn, whose combination of effortless style and skill produced a look that floored the judges and stood proudly on its own amongst a gifted pool of global talent. As a suburb full of students and discerning professionals, Kent Town’s the perfect place for the talented stylist to have established a third ‘Attaboy’ barber shop. And, as he invites us through the door, it’s clear that this is an establishment echoing his laid-back nature. As Luke fires up the coffee machine, and we find our places amongst the cacti, we ask him how he feels about the win. “You feel like all the hard work you put in has paid off”, he tells us, warmly. “I think because of the current climate, with everything going on, the actual idea that I had won didn’t sink in for a long time and still doesn’t feel real… it’s just crazy. I’m very humbled.” As a stylist, Luke is unique. His obtuse approach to his profession would catch many of the perfectionists in the industry off-guard; a less formal take on a craft steeped in tradition tends to do that. But he’s unapologetic, and thus far, his ability to draw influence from further afield has stood him in good stead to be one of Australia’s best barbers. “I pull inspiration from all over the world, so the end product is a total concoction of influences, skill sets and experiences; like a creative tapestry.” His most recent accolade aside, there are a lot of reasons for the Adelaide local to be excited about the future, and it’s refreshing to see that the challenges of 2020 haven’t stripped him of his infectious positivity. “We’re stronger than we think”, he smiles, as we settle in to ask him a few questions. “It’s been a tough year to be a stylist… but I haven’t seen another industry band together like the hair industry has - there is nothing but love and support.”

What were the celebrations like after winning the AS Challenge. Has life changed much since winning? As we all know, the formal celebrations were cancelled, which was a bummer. My own were low-key, but I got to celebrate with my partner and son at home, so it was nice to be able to share that achievement with them. My partner doesn’t think I’m crazy for being in love with hair now, which is great! The accolade has offered me a lot more opportunities and put me in good stead to take my career to the next level. I’m just looking forward to 2021 and the projects that are organised. How has work been since taking home the award, have you noticed a difference in clientele? During the time the award was announced, my work was at a weird spot; restrictions, closures - you know, COVID. But things have been getting better and better. Being based in South Australia I have been really lucky in fact that I have been able to get back into the salon and do what I love. The

guys at work have had plenty of fun with it though. They like to make me very aware that I won an award and make a conscious effort to yell it across the salon mid service to get a reaction. Have to love the in-salon banter. Since a few local publishers did write-ups about the win, the clientele has started leaning more towards that creative side, which is really cool. There are plenty of clients experimenting, asking for something different. Let’s talk about the cut that won it all: where did you get the inspiration from and does it represent anything in particular? The idea behind the look I created for the All-Star Challenge was to go away from what I think is the current trend in men’s hair and create something more edgy - with a lot of movement and length - while still maintaining a masculine shape.  My work is heavily influenced from the barbering scene in the UK. I think a lot of the industry could agree that the barbers and stylists over there are creating modern trends and really pushing the boundaries of men’s hair.

CHANGING TIMES

AMERICAN CREW

How would you say it’s different from other styles?

and always spend time learning new skills. You never stop learning new skills, be it from another stylist in the industry or the guys in the salon.

I think it’s different from other styles because it’s going away from the classic style of haircut. There is something special about creating an original haircut that is stylish, yet simple. What techniques were used in the creation? When you actually break the cut down, it is a super simple style that was created using some simple graduation techniques. I didn’t want to overthink the haircut or create something absurd. I wanted to show that clients can still get great looking creative haircuts without having to do anything too outlandish. Fundamental scissor and ‘razor work’ can allow you a lot of freedom.

How have you managed to keep a positive mindset? It can be difficult to keep a positive mindset sometimes, especially when things get tough. But I am lucky to have such an amazing team of people around me that I work with day in and day out and a beautiful family that supports me. I think having a core group around you is important, and try to find the positive where it all might seem negative. In what ways have you adapted your business? We have adapted many parts of the business. With the team at Attaboy, we have done everything we can to make clients feel safe. We are lucky being in a state that has next to no restrictions on our industry. But, we are still doing our part where we can.

ave you always been H drawn to creative pursuits, or was it just barbering specifically?

08

Yeah, I guess I have always been a creative and a very hands on person. Barbering was never on my radar at a young age. I was pursuing university and other things when I found barbering, and that’s when traditional barbering led me into the wild world of hair. That’s when I fell in love. Since day one, I have loved that hair can be so simple and elegant but also so creative. With the industry forever evolving, it’s a never ending journey with hair.

ow have you seen the H industry respond to the pandemic and what advice would you give other barbers right now? I have seen a close community of professionals become an even closer group of people. I haven’t seen another industry band together like the hair industry has, the pandemic has created lifetime connections within the industry. I think everyone has dealt with something in some way or another, and there is nothing but support and love. I would just say to anyone having a tough time, that you’re a part of the most amazing industry of people that are here to help. So, please, speak up.

Creatives from all industries had a pretty tough year in 2020 - they all had to adapt in some way. How was your year? Yeah look, 2020 was not a good year to be a creative. I know for a lot of people adapting has had its upsides. Having to step back from that busy schedule and reevaluate everything has allowed them to come back bigger and stronger. I know for myself it gave me time to reflect and plan for moving forward. It’s shown that creatives can’t be stopped. Even with challenges like this, we will always find a way to create and do what we love. Did you learn any lessons or pick up any new skills? I think 2020 has taught all of us that we are stronger than we think. I am forever trying to evolve myself as a creative and a stylist. I try to keep myself up to date with education

What’re plans for 2021? 2021, well. I am currently working behind the scenes on a few projects that I am excited to share early in the year. I want to keep pushing the boundaries and taking the risks. I am looking forward to getting back into the studio and creating some more work. I have been fortunate enough to sign with Andis as an Educator, so I am looking forward to hitting the road with them and sharing my knowledge. ASC 2021? Lets see how we go...

PREDICTIONS FOR 2021 THE LOOK? Long hair is back. Men are starting to grow their hair and experiment with different styles more. They’re trusting their barbers to create looks for them that are appealing yet suitable for the lifestyle they live.  THE INDUSTRY? The men’s grooming industry is forever evolving and growing, that’s what’s so great about it. I definitely think you’ll see a lot more people with medium to long hair, more creative styles, and a big introduction of men’s colour.  THE FILM/TV SERIES? This is too tough! There is potential for so many great new films and TV series’. Lets see what they come up with. THE WORLD? I want to see the world back to whatever “normal” is. 2020 has been a write off for some, bring on 2021. No pandemics, no hate, everyone coming together again. THE PERSONAL GOAL? The next personal goal for me is to push myself and my work and get myself at the top of my game. Global education? Mens Hairdresser of the year? ASC 2021 Winner? Guess we will have to wait and see.

TOP 20 LOOKS W/ JUDGES MARK RABONE AND RENÉE MEREDITH The All-Star Challenge is an annual competition that highlights the world’s best talent in men’s grooming, helping to accelerate careers and capture the timeless spirit and creativity of the American Crew brand. Once again, 2020 saw hundreds of talented Australian barbers submit their original looks, reaching new heights in diversity, innovation and technique.

10

The judging panel consisted of five of the most esteemed hair professionals and creatives. To take us through the top 20 are two of the Australian judges, Rénee Meredith (National Education Manager, Revlon Professional Brands) and Mark Rabone (American Crew All Star and owner of Esquire Male Grooming).

M: CAMILLE DE BONDY KINGS DOMAIN BARBER SHOP This look really spoke to us with its modern use of styling and product, well placed texture and a simple loose curl at the front that gave it that little extra. It resonated with us for its nod to the 50’s era.

JUDGING CRITERIA

• Structure of the haircut

• Finishing of the haircut

• Representation of the American Crew brand

• Originality

• Art Direction: wardrobe

• Art Direction: photography

M: NASER LAMEY NASER CUTS This interpretation of a pompadour was again perfectly executed. The shape was excellent, the tapers and blend were really well done and the finish was perfect. The wardrobe was complimentary to the overall look.

R: SOPHIA MAI ENA HAIR This style is full of texture, asymmetrical and really works. We see a lot of texture and length which is hard to create in strong hair and the styling brings out the work gone into the haircut. Having a model that compliments the haircut is a big positive for me. Great look.

AMERICAN CREW

M: CEM TAYLOR GORMAN KINGS DOMAIN The structure and symmetry of this look was really impressive, the styling showcased the texture without going overboard which produced the perfect cut to use for this model and wardrobe.

CHANGING TIMES

M: JOHN GEORGIOU BARBERY THE CRAFT OF A BARBER This look was a beautiful interpretation of a modern classic, the cut and finish are polished yet understated and very wearable. The model and wardrobe combined resulted in a very strong image that the judges loved.

R: LIAM ALAN O’HARA KINGS DOMAIN SYDNEY MYER Curl with length is definitely on the move. This look is natural and modern. Perfect length for the face shape with it being tight around the sides. Great finish showing off the curl, whilst still maintaining a masculine feel.

R: MANUEL PROVOOST BARBERS OF BELGIUM This image represents the American Crew brand so well. Great model, classic hairstyle whilst maintaining length and texture which makes this look still very current and now. The touch of collar ties this in to be a wearable style for work or play.

M: STEPHANIE PFALZGRAF KINGS DOMAIN BARBER SHOP Longer lengths while maintaining a masculine look are always a favourite. This look was a classic example of how to maintain a square look whilst having longer hair. Reducing bulk where necessary and the right product - sometimes a little less is a lot more.

R: ZACHARY ZACHARIA ZAK GROOMING FOR MEN This haircut is very retro and has a really cool influence from past eras and bands. It’s the right amount of length and symmetry highlighting a chopped in front with faded sides. This style works and looks cool in 2021.

CHANGING TIMES

AMERICAN CREW

M: NASER LAMEY NASER CUTS This look was extremely clean. The high texture was flawless, almost not a hair out of place. Technically it was perfectly executed, all tied together by the wardrobe and great photography.

M: LISA SUE ROBERTSON ARTIQUE HAIR Once again the judges were impressed by the way the model’s natural curls were enhanced by light texture while still maintaining square form. The sharp tapers and edges were impressive and made for a nice tailored finish despite the loose interior on the top.

12 R: LUKE MUNN ATTABOY BARBERS I love this look! Immediately when I saw this image, I knew it had huge potential and was up there as the perfect shot. The length combined with the right amount of texture was executed perfectly. This look is very now and on trend. It’s masculine and represents the American Crew brand fantastically. It’s a bit outside the box from the classics. Great hair on a great model.

R: EOIN MCCARTHY AREA STUDIO This look is short, not too overstyled and the perfect amount of texture for this length. The model wears the cut and makes this overall look very polished. Simple, classic and current.

M: DAVID WIESELMANN WIESELMANN SALON One of my favorite submissions. From the sublime use of colour, the texture used to support the cut on the top creating subtle lift through to the edges and taper, it showed a real understanding of technique. Perfect in every way!

AMERICAN CREW

R: NICOLE COIA KINGS DOMAIN BARBER SHOP This look is really cool. It’s a great example of using lots of texture with the right amount of length. The shape is still well balanced with a dishevelled finish.

R: LOUISA SALMON THE BEARDED MAN M: JOSHUA WILLIAM COOKE ROKKMAN BARBERS “The higher the hair the closer to god!” This was one of our favourite submissions of a pompadour. The use of colour balanced really well with the fade, the model really worked well and made for a striking look that jumped out straight away.

M: AGRIPPINO BURRONE VOGUE BARBERS

I love this look. It’s outside the box and very cool. It looks really piecey throughout the top, with different lengths at the front, but it just works. The styling is on point and the overall look with the model is polished. The styling finishes this look off perfectly.

13

R: MANUEL PROVOOST BARBERS OF BELGIUM Showcasing a strong image with length and volume. The length works with the longer blended sides. This look is classic American Crew made fit for 2021.

The use of the natural curl while still maintaining a square masculine shape was really well done, while using the natural fall of the hair made for a wearable classic which resonates with American Crew.

R: FOUAD RAFIDI FRED LE MARCHE It’s great to see longer lengths entering the competition. This is a perfect example of length looking classic and very current. The cutting and styling is very polished which is hard to do with length like this. The model makes this image look effortless. Beautiful result and great representation of the American Crew brand.

NEW SKILLS FOR A NEW NORMAL W/ KELVIN WONG Barbers are resilient folk, ready to tackle and learn from any obstacle they encounter. The 2018 American Crew All-Star Challenge winner Kelvin Wong isn’t only an exemplary stylist, he’s also a pro at unearthing those valuable lessons and skills you find in adversity. Here’s a few ways he bettered himself and his business to take him beyond 2020. Negotiating: I’ve had to get much better at having tough conversations with my clients. Most of them want to get their regular cut, but, because I don’t know how long it will be before I can see them again, I have to steer them towards styles that maintain their shape much longer. It’s given me a lot of confidence in being directive and building trust with my clients, which for future appointments allows me to have more creative freedom. Less clip, more snip: Cuts that use clippers tend to grow out quickly and look pretty mangy, so I’ve really evolved my point-cut techniques over the last 6 months. Point-cuts take the weight and the bluntness out of, say, a short-backand-sides, making it way softer and more stylish during growth. I’ve also eased up on the thinning scissors - the frizz doesn’t take kindly to long stints between chops. Texture techniques: As American Crew keep on progressing their brand and diversifying their look, I found that I took the quieter periods to learn a lot more texturing rather than tapering. I’ve delved deep into my hairdressing skills and combined them with barbering to create looks that feel more at home in editorial. The clients are loving it, and we’re confident this focus on integrating the two will attract new customers going forward. Respecting our space: We’re in such close contact with our clients, which means our hygiene and cleaning processes have to be the most stringent. In keeping the space COVID safe, we’ve gained this newfound respect for our digs and learnt that giving our shop all the love makes it a beautiful and creative environment to work in. Clockwork: Keeping the shop COVID-safe has made us run like clockwork. We can’t have more than X people waiting, and have to thoroughly clean after every client, so there’s a lot of rigour around our processes and timing. Our workflow management is as smooth as it’s ever been, and I think it’s a really positive shift that the entire industry will feel going forward; diligence on the admin side is good for any business’ future!

BEARDS FOR PURPOSE W/ JIMMY NIGGLES

AMERICAN CREW

CHANGING TIMES

If you haven’t heard of Jimmy Niggles then you’d most likely know his face - or more accurately - the heroic mane growing from it. “David saw one of my very first portraits, by a photographer named Mr. Elbank”, Jimmy, real name Scott Maggs, explains. “It kinda went viral - people were getting tattoos of it and all sorts. Anyways, David did a little digging and found out why I’d grown it and asked me if I’d be interested in flying over to LA to take some snaps. I, of course, said yes.” Lost in the corridors of LA’s Milk Studios, Maggs was fortunate enough to witness Katy Perry dancing around with cupcakes on her breasts. Unfortunately, David eventually found him, and he was dragged into an adjacent studio somewhat begrudgingly. His experience with the photographer, who he describes as a cross between ”Andy Warhol and your best mate’s dad”, was, and still is underpinned by an intent to spread awareness for a deeper cause beyond capturing a very photogenic beard. “Our mate Wes was killed by melanoma - the most deadly form of skin cancer,” he tells us, munching on a Manoush (which we’ll get to later). “He had a suss looking spot on his neck that he didn’t know was bad until it was too late. He was only 26 and it really shook us up. At his wake we decided to do something in his honour. A few schooners and some hearty chat later, we drilled down on skin checks.” Him and his mates got to researching and found that the most pressing issue was that no one was telling young blokes to get checked, a fact Niggles found astounding considering more than 95% of skin cancers can be successfully treated with early detection.

More research found that 69% of Australia’s melanoma deaths are men, and, it’s the biggest cancer killer of young people. A few more pints and a chance encounter with a majestically bearded man, saw the inception of Beard Season, an organisation that asks men to grow their beards as life saving conversation starters, challenging everyone who asks about them to get a skin check. From having to be strong-armed by his girlfriend into investing in his first tub of AC Matte Clay because he “didn’t have much to splash at the time”, the now CEO is an inspiring professional and human we truly admire, both for his attention to his appearance and his selfless approach to life. Border bound by the unyielding pandemic, we caught up with him over the phone for a quick man-to-man. Yo Jimmy, thanks so much for chatting to us. What’s happening? G’day and thanks so much for the chat. I’m currently in Lakemba snacking on a Manoush in honour of our mate Dan Hutton. He passed away about this time last year from cancer and was one of the co-founders of Beard Season. Dan put together a beautiful guide to living which was read out at his funeral and one of the points was “travel, even if it’s to Lakemba for some Manoush”. And here we are... I didn’t even plan to be here which is even spookier… My beautiful old Range Rover caught on fire a couple of days ago - in the middle of the national park - which scared the bejesus out of me. Thankfully, my water bottle was full and I managed to put it out. Anyways, it ended up being towed out here and I’m about to go pick it up from a lovely bloke called Ahmed who is hopefully fixing it as we speak. Guess how much it’s going to cost too? A grand total of $150. Yep. Lucky I got onto it early or it could have been a real catastrophe.

“Ever since we started Beard Season I set myself a challenge to meet someone new everyday”

19

CHANGING TIMES

AMERICAN CREW

Early detection is key! Let’s talk about Wes, the legend that inspired Beard Season. What kind of a bloke was he, and what would he think about Beard Season?

We had two huts, two specialists, a tech team and a lot of people who made it all a success. So much so we had over 150 people lining up for a skin check in our last few days.

He actually couldn’t grow a beard so I reckon he’d think it was hilarious. At college together in Canberra we used to always have some kind of g-up happening to keep us entertained. That’s probably how the idea bubbled up. We had something called Wig-Off which would dovetail into end of year exams. Basically, you had to wear a ridiculous wig for as long as you could and if you caught someone else without it you ‘dewigged’ them. It helped ease the stress levels a bit and Wes was always a keen contender. He loved a gag and was always up for adventure. Smart, big hearted and warm. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer bloke. A country boy like me. We’re damn lucky to have known him but it’s horrible not having him around anymore. Although, there has been so many moments since he was taken from us that I swear he’s still around.

We were on a roll attracting a lot of interest and potential partnerships. Then the bushfires hit, then the global pandemic. And now we’re in recession. It really derailed our plans.

He sounds pretty wonderful, and you’re no stranger to meeting all kinds of brilliant people. What are some of the lessons you’ve learned over the years?

We’re currently writing a grant application to get funding for an aspirational, BIG thinking initiative which we can’t wait to get up and running. Something we’ve been working on for more than ten years to bring to life.

Hmm. One of my favourite lessons is ‘never be afraid to ask questions’. Absolute gold. Not only of others but yourself, too. It has kept me on track for a while now. Not only is it a great way of getting clarity it’s a great mantra to meet people.

20

Ever since we started Beard Season I set myself a challenge to meet someone new every day (which kind of led onto the growth of our Instagram). Asking them a question or two and challenging them to get checked. Try it! You’ll be surprised how much it expands things. I met Sir Richard Branson in a Sydney hotel lobby because of it. Later that year he invited me to Necker Island for a week! Same thing happened with Chris Hemsworth. I saw that he was going to shave off his director’s beard so I reached out to the director and asked if he could do a shout out for Beard Season. Next thing, Hemsy is telling his 43+million fans on Insta to get a skin check which saved tonnes of lives.

“Asking doesn’t cost anything but the answers can be extremely valuable. Especially if you have purpose.”

But, our core supporters have been phenomenal. Particularly our board and our ambassadors. They’ve really risen to the challenge (grown some magnificent winter beards) and spread a lot of awareness about getting checked. There’s a lot of uncertainty out there and charity is one of the first areas of the budget to be cut, so corporate donors are hard to keep on board. So, we’re focussing more on big, strategic funding sources.

And what about on a personal level? Personally, the first few months of the pandemic were the toughest. But I love working from home so after we spent a bit of time recalibrating our strategy I just kept my head down. We also had a spectacular run of surf this season so that was a fine distraction. Plus, I just got married in March so the glow of that is still alive and well. Oh, and we got a pooch. A gorgeous little Groodle called Waggs (who is now humongous). What are plans for Beard Season/yourself going forward? Well, we’d love everyone who reads this to go and get a skin check with your GP / skin specialist. Just visit beardseason. com and hit ‘GET CHECKED’ to find your nearest clinic. And let us know how you go by sending a photo or video to @beardseason on Instagram. Then challenge at least five mates to do the same. It could save your lives. For me, I’m locked in on this grant opportunity for the next little while, which would set us up for the next two to three years of pop-up skin check clinics around the country. Something which will hopefully give us the evidence we need to present a solid case in parliament for a federally funded national skin check program. Which would be a magnificent good to come from something so bad. If you want to get involved please get in touch. The more great minds involved in this the better. Oh, and we also might have a more female focused campaign launching next year too. So hopefully we’ve got something for everyone under the sun. Together, we can make melanoma… history.

And you met our very own David Raccuglia... David is such a charismatic guy. Amazing hair, thick rimmed glasses and a well tailored suit. Confident. Full of energy and a razor sharp vision. He worked quick and smooth. A wonder to watch - let alone be part of. And still, those photos are in barbershops all around the world years and years later, hopefully spreading awareness about our cause and saving lives in the process. 2020 was a pretty tough year for most businesses. How has Beard Season fared? Mate, the events of 2020 have thrown a massive spanner in the works. Around this time in 2019 we were just locking in our first big corporate partner. They funded over 1,000 skin checks over summer which helped us find 608 suspect lesions. A massive campaign which saved a LOT of lives. It really pushed us.

From the very moment it hits your brush, it’s clear that this is a product made to deliver a seamless shave. It gels to the bristles with the perfect amount of hold, so that when you make contact with your client’s face it distributes beautifully, especially around those tricky jawline nooks.

Once on, you can see that the weight is superbly balanced, providing a protective cushion that prevents nicks and cuts, whilst still allowing the blade to sail on through. Even for my clients who have sensitive skin, it’s got so much glide that things like razor burn are a non-issue. And, the fact that the ingredients actively lift the hair follicles from the skin makes the process all the more satisfying. The alchemists at American Crew have ensured the lather shave cream hydrates the skin during use, but I always follow up by using the All in One Face Balm. The combination of the two leaves every client babyfaced and ready for whatever the day throws at them.

BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS W/ COLLIN ALLINGHAM Across Melbourne, Sweeney Todd’s is one of the best known names in barbering. Since opening his first studio 25 years ago, Collin Allingham has expanded his doors to three, whilst keeping his promise of administering elite male grooming to an ever-growing client base. With his family now involved in three successful establishments, he is as passionate as he’s ever been, looking at the future with as much enthusiasm as when he first stepped on to a shop floor.

24

He knows that when it comes to operating a business, each step forward can be as daunting as the last. That’s why there isn’t a better placed gentleman to impart his wisdom on how to build a successful business in this constantly evolving industry. So, whether you’re just starting out, or on the cusp of expanding, we think you’ll find some of Collin’s advice helpful.

BEING A YOUNGSTER What were the key lessons you got taught when starting out? Always be respectful. Always face your fears. Always do your best. Who were your mentors? Maurice Cohen, my teacher and boss at The Stag in Cranbourne, VIC. I started under him when I was 17 years old and worked with him for six years before exploring the industry on my own. He was a big influence in my work and life. He sadly passed away in 2019 and is missed by many. What were your biggest fears or challenges? Myself. I was a little rough around the edges and needed a new direction in life. One key piece of advice for young barbers? Develop your artistic senses, and never lose them. For me, barbering, music and Muay Thai boxing were my creative channels of awakening. Use the mirror as a tool, and ask yourself: “how can I be a better person?” A very important question for your own personal development.

OPENING THE FIRST BARBER SHOP Where did the idea for the first barber shop come from? I was born in Scotland, where I learned the legend of Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, London. It seemed fitting to my heritage, and that was where the idea for the name came from. At the time, I felt there was very little choice for men. There was a lack of innovation, creativity and professionalism. It was a future that looked promising and allowed me to put my skills to the test and take risks.

How did you set Sweeney Todd’s apart? I wanted Sweeney Todd’s to be an environment where stylists could be dedicated to honing their expert skills. A place where we could empower men through our stylists. A place where customers could trust us for the latest hair and brand awareness. I wanted my team to be experts in the barbering field. How did you know it was the right time to do it? It was perfect timing. I had just met my wife, Minnie, and she was naturally 10 times more talented than me. We took advantage of opportunities when they were presented and we balanced each other’s skillsets. She designed our first salon and away we went. What were your biggest fears or challenges? Letting people down. That was always terrifying for me. I also feared what people thought of me, then soon realised to accept the fear and work with it.

AMERICAN CREW

CHANGING TIMES

One key piece of advice for barbers opening their first shop? I have 4 rules I follow and share with my team.

EXPANDING THE BUSINESS

1. Be impeccable with your word 2. Don’t take things personally 3. Never assume 4. Do your best

Why did you decide to expand? Expanding was a plan my wife and I had born out of pure passion and our future insight. We started our family a year after our first salon opened, so we wanted it to be a family business we could grow into. We believed that we wanted to be professional and we truly believed that we could manifest our ambitions and be a part of this industry for a long time. Our goal was to be industry leaders and we believed our brand deserved to be present in more than one location. We now have three children who are all passionate and involved in the three shops.

Once you set the bar on how you conduct yourself, never give up, never give in. If you have a problem that you need resolved, talk to like minded people. It always amazes me how so many artists are willing and wanting to help other artists.

How did you execute the expansion? We did our market research and planning before we even started expanding. We calculated the risk and responsibility and developed our knowledge and commitment. We knew we had to build our brand, our stylist and our salon product. We developed a great relationship with American Crew and developed a product range to suit each location. We have continued to work on educating our stylists with the American Crew product and spent time training them the Sweeney Todd’s way. We also invited ideas from outside the industry’s main focus. What changes in the industry have you had to adapt to? The biggest change in the industry has been the impact of social media platforms. They can be extremely powerful in generating business.

ONE YEAR IN What were some of the key learnings in that first year? I needed to be excellent in my skills, so I started researching education platforms. I came across the American Crew brand, which was great timing for us. Considering their goals and vision, they aligned with our brand and it felt like a perfect collaborative relationship. Their dedication to male masculinity seemed to resonate with Sweeney Todd’s. Was it a success by your standards? Yes! Sometimes looking back we can be critical, however the Sweeney Todd’s brand had begun to deliver on our core values and set out a strong tone, placing Sweeney Todd’s as one of the leaders in the industry. Were there any hairy or amazing moments? So many stories! I’m not sure how much of my memory has embellished the facts. I was fortunate enough to meet and work with a great hairstylist, Stephen Foyle. I had the honour of collaborating with him on shoots for M.J Bale, Zegna and GQ Magazine. We also worked on the GQ show in Sydney, and very influential men like Dave Franco and Ian Thorpe. How did you get clients on board? The easiest way was to exceed my clients expectations. Just when they think it is over, impress them again. We all have the power to do this. One key piece of advice for those a year in? Be kind and compassionate. Watch out for distraction and stay close to your values. Most importantly, attract others that will help you achieve your goals.

How have you retained and found new clients during this growth? We use a great software program that helps us retain our customers’ information. We use this information to our advantage so we can ensure the client is receiving what they want and expect. We connect with customers in every way possible, always having a team member answering phones, emails or messages daily - even managing our socials outside of work hours. One key piece of advice for anyone looking to grow their business? Attend networking events, embrace social media, hold events, prepare to grow, support the barbering industry, optimise your stylists and staff, don’t forget about the small steps, give back to the community, always be willing to change and evolve, and, most importantly, get to know your clients!

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE Where do you see your business growing or changing? The next decade will be about creating and building our resilient brand. We want to navigate through change, deliver value and have positive outcomes. We will be the disruptor and set ambitious goals. How do you see the industry changing? The digital age is still getting started. So, get on the rollercoaster and hold on! Clients are crying out for engagement with stylists, so be there to engage in any and every way. Our industry will also need to be here for our planet and will need to evolve continuously. What excites you about your future? The impact that our youth culture will have over the next 10 years is going to be enormous. You guys will go down as one of the most significant generations of modern times. So, aspiring stylists and barbers - get ready - it’s your turn to amaze the world.

CHANGING TIMES

AMERICAN CREW

Barbers have a unique perspective on the ways that masculinity is changing and evolving. Every encounter with a client acts as a window into how a man thinks, feels and looks. Having worked as a stylist for over 40 years, Kai Schnitzler has utilised his unique insight into the male psyche and adapted his skills and services accordingly. Kai is the CEO of Mister Chop Shop, an establishment nestled in Sydney’s Surry Hills that all at once delivers on the time honoured art of barbering and a distinctly modern grooming experience. His diverse client list puts him face-to-face with all of society, readying business tycoons for board meetings, musicians for the stage, and proud fathers for weddings. We asked him to answer a few questions relating to the ever-changing gentlemen of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

26

THE CHANGING FACE OF MASCULINITY W/ KAI SCHNITZLER Why is looking good important for men? Caring about one’s appearance, in the right way, is an essential trait in the mens’ world that garners attention, money, jobs, respect and confidence. The truth is that everyone cares about their appearance. It has always been like that, from the first time a caveman coloured a pelt and wore it over his shoulder instead of that out-dated loincloth. Those who say they don’t care are most likely lying. Of course men care how they look. Even if a guy has a great personality, a suitor looking for a date still hopes he’s at least a little cute. A few minutes spent spiffing yourself in the mirror before you leave home reinforces the idea that you deserve success and good treatment in your own mind.

How have you seen men change over the years? Is it hard to keep up? The modern man is completely different from the men years ago. Modern men rarely play the role of the breadwinner or the main base of the family. Usually, both partners share the responsibility of making money. There is always a little difference between generations, but the men of this generation are poles apart from their fathers and grandfathers. That’s a good thing because it could trigger a huge change that will ensure the future is much brighter than the past.

CHANGING TIMES

What is the most notable way your own idea of masculinity has changed over the years? Masculinity is in fact changing and masculinity affects the way we express emotions. hat three words come to mind when you hear W ‘masculinity’ and why? Harley Davidson, Tattoos and Pomade. Why? Because for nearly all of human history the answer to the question of what masculinity is was decided by one group of people: Men! Do you think it’s important for barbers to converse with their clients beyond ‘hair talk’? How come? As long as the ‘hair talk’ is done properly, why not? Obviously it depends on the individual person in your chair. Some love a chat, some don’t. Getting to the bottom of this is the most important part of a cut - it’ll change your entire service. What’s the most important trait a man should possess? Having integrity is a very important characteristic. A great man will stay true to his word and true to himself. I believe that integrity and ambition are enough to convince someone that you will eventually be financially sound. Men with integrity are highly respected and in return they give respect to others. Men like this often show courage because they are required to stand up for their beliefs at all times. Who do you think are good male role models and why? John Legend is a good male role model. He pushes back on negative masculine stereotypes in the media, while also helping to combat the issue of toxic masculinity. Will Smith is also an exemplary character. He’s gone from a successful rapper who went broke, to an Oscar-nominated actor whose films gross over $100 million each. Much of what he earns he donates to charities - now that’s a real man. What about masculinity?

a

hairstyle

that

epitomises

A Crew Cut. But whether it’s a classic pompadour, a cutthroat cue ball head shave or a mean fade, it isn’t the same as it used to be. And this constant evolution is what epitomises masculinity these days. Some sage advice for people at home? The modern man is a higher maintenance beast that requires a specific level of male grooming; a ten buck job just won’t cut it. If you spend less than 45 minutes at your barber, you’re not getting the attention you deserve. So, find the hairdresser or barber you trust - who makes you feel and look great - and keep them in good company.

A CHANGE OF MIND BY NICK BRACKS The seismic changes that 2020 brought about have taken a toll on many of the barbering industry’s mental health. While it can feel easier to brush those feelings aside and push on, we do so at our peril. If we don’t confront issues head on, they will only become worse. When it comes to our physical well being, we should not wait until we have a heart attack to start exercising. Likewise, we should not wait until we become mentally burnt out or overwhelmed with stress before we start looking after our mental health.

You’ve shown how strong you are as an industry, but navigating uncharted waters will always be difficult. My firm belief is that the creative and entrepreneurial drive you possess can help you break through any negativity you face along the way, but an accompanying roadmap is always helpful. I’ve highlighted some keys points and tools you can take into the future on the next page:

PREPARING FOR A FULL WORKLOAD

QUICK TIPS

A lot of us have had our working lives altered, so heading back to work will be a shock to the system. We need to make sure we are doing things daily to deal with this potential stress. This includes checking in with friends, family and people who support us, taking time out for our wellbeing (exercise, meditation, gratitude journaling etc) and not putting too much pressure on ourselves. Remember, COVID or not COVID, life and barbering will always have ups and downs. The lesson here is to learn to deal with them rather than avoid them.

Exercise Simple movement can make all of the difference. Find a small space at your shop and do 15 minutes of exercise per day. It can be anything… push ups, lunges, skipping… just move at your own pace!

SHAKING THE BLUES

Phone a friend Call your best friend or a loved one (or a few of them) and offload your stress. Make it clear that they can do the same to you. Being heard can go a long way.

Getting back on track after a tough time can be difficult. Stay positive by reminding yourself about what it is you are passionate about and what your purpose is. Again, having daily wellness habits in place will help to deal with negativity. Take things one step at a time and focus on the present.

ADAPTING TO NEW WAYS OF WORKING

Meditation Take 5 minutes a day to sit with your thoughts. There is no perfect way to do this… you can use a mantra, focus on breathing, use an app (there are hundreds of free ones online). Put the scissors down, and just give yourself the time out.

Nutrition Make sure (to the best of your ability) that you are eating well and drinking enough water. Sleep Stress can affect our sleep patterns. If we follow the healthy behaviours above, we will sleep better and in turn have less stress.

Change in life and work is inevitable. With change we always have two choices - embrace it or fight it. Rather than looking at all of the negatives that come with change, try and focus on the positives. There will always be uncertainty in life, so why not look at COVID as a chance to create healthy ways to manage it? If we look at it this way then it is not just about coping and getting through the lasting effects. It is about finding ways to thrive long term - no matter what life throws at us.

29

BEING A ‘MAN’ ABOUT IT The most important thing we can do as men is learn to speak up about our emotions. Male or female, we are all human and we all feel things. It is incredibly unhealthy to bottle up emotions and push them to the side. Men have been taught in the past that it is weak to speak up - this could not be further from the truth. It takes far more courage to show vulnerability than to bottle things up. Set an example and make note of those around you - are they supportive or are you around toxic people? If you have toxic relationships, how are you going to change them? They say we become a sum of the top five people we spend our time with, so make sure you are around positive people.

MAKING WORK, WORK Work can be all consuming and we often feel scared to speak up when we have an issue. Remind yourself that it is in the best interest of everyone if we look after our mind and body - we will perform better, be happier, and get more out of ourselves long term. Make sure you make time to create daily habits that you can incorporate into your lives. Mediation, mindfulness, exercise, gratitude journaling, eating and sleeping well are all examples. Remember, everything in life is about balance.

KEEPING CREATIVITY POSITIVE Creativity is so important for our wellbeing and general happiness. Work and stress can inhibit our ability to be creative and often when we make a career out of our creative passions, we can lose the joy of the passion we initially had due to the immense pressure and stress work brings. Again, balance is critical here. Check in with yourself regularly and look after yourself. When negative thoughts arrive and you feel overwhelmed, remind yourself it is ok, take a break, breathe, and remind yourself what you love about your work.

CHANGING TIMES

“THERE ARE LESSONS TO BE LEARNED EVERYWHERE, AND IF YOU KEEP LEARNING, YOUR POTENTIAL IS LIMITLESS.” The art of barbering is a traditional practice, but for those wanting to make a name for themselves in a competitive industry, it’s the unconventional approach that stands out. As a stylist, Blade Pullman is responsible for helping keep masculinity fresh and in motion, synthesising what’s in fashion to create his own looks and trends. To have every client walking away feeling distinguished and modern is a daily challenge, so we asked the 2019 All-Star Challenge winner how he shapes the future of hair.

DON’T BE NAIVE TO CHANGE You may not like a new style, or for a moment, think it’s uncool. But, if it’s on the noggins of dudes walking the streets, it’s best to be ahead by learning the cut and being prepared. Just because you aren’t in love with it now, doesn’t mean it won’t be in fashion in six or twelve months.

MAKE A LOOK YOUR OWN There have been a few trends over the last few years that I haven’t loved. Of course, they’ve come into fashion and every feller has come asking for the cuts (rightfully so). But it hasn’t deterred me. I’ve taken those styles and made them my own, tweaking them until I’ve liked, and eventually, loved them.

PREDICTIONS FOR 2021 THE LOOK? I think the 70’s are coming back; a bit of longer hair on the ears is on the rise. Fades will be continued (of course) but I won’t be surprised when I see 70’s vibes start popping up in the streets. THE INDUSTRY? I hope to see the industry boom coming out of lockdown. Especially the places down Sydney and Melbourne way. Can’t wait to see our barber and hairdresser family thriving and killing it once again. THE FILM/TV SERIES? Cool stuff in the works I can’t talk about ;) but no doubt the TV and film industry will be itching to get new stuff out. Always nice seeing good haircuts on the big screen too. THE WORLD? Who knows at this point, a slow climb back. I’m just hoping for the best for everyone. THE PERSONAL GOAL? I’m obsessed with perfection, it’s what drives me everyday in every haircut. So, just trying to be the best I can and making the most of every opportunity.

SOAK IT UP Never. Stop. Learning. Wherever you can access new knowledge, adopt a new technique, or make time to try something completely different, do it. There are lessons to be learned everywhere, and if you keep doing this your potential is limitless.

OPEN YOUR MIND My wife and friends will be very quick to tell you that I can be stubborn, and this used to include my approach to barbering. It was only when I pushed myself to try new techniques and seek out new looks that I started getting great at my craft. Make sure you open your mind, because being stubborn is a brick wall to true creativity.

BE COURAGEOUS This is closely related to my last point, but more in line with taking that leap to trust your own abilities and experiment. Approaching a cut and making calculated risks can be scary, but the only way to get the confidence in yourself to be original (and be able to fix it if it goes wrong) is by backing yourself in to nail it.
