Dear friends, God-given femininity. The very concept seems to ignite a powder keg of emotions. For centuries, the beauty of God-given femininity has been under attack, its definition debated, and its behavior contested. Secular humanism has attempted to destroy the beautiful model of femininity and transform it into an equal model to masculinity. And today, it has gone one step further to claim an embrace of non-binary sexual identity. With all this confusion within society for such a long time, it is no wonder that this debate has filtered down to the youngest members of society–our children. This is no coincidence. Sin is like that. Satan is in for the long haul, and he delights in man’s refusal of the Godly gifts our Maker has bestowed upon us. As Christians, we must engage in this debate and end it once and for all, at least in our minds. Despite what society is saying, what media is portraying, and influencers are engaging, Scripture is clear: there is a difference between male and female, and it is worth celebrating! Often, a woman determines her level of femininity by her personality and proclivity to certain behaviors. My sister often stated, “I am a tomboy.” She loved horses and the outdoors. She cared less about makeup and dolls and more about biology and mechanics. She wonders today that due to today’s cultural pressure, if she would be encouraged to release her femininity and embrace a more masculine stereotype. Despite her love for “tomboyish” hobbies and interests, she also exhibited very feminine traits and behaviors. These included the very behaviors that are clearly defined in Scripture as to the true nature of a woman: relational, nurturing, vulnerable, love for beauty, and a desire to respond. This is what defines a woman of God. The well-known verses of Proverbs 31 speak to the woman who manifests her God-given femininity through her character. The verses claim this type of character is difficult to find but when found, her worth is far above jewels. This woman is trusted by her husband, and she supports his work. Later in the Scripture, the Lord promises that because of her relational, caring nature, her children will rise up and bless her. God-given femininity requires no debate. It is a gift that, when freely accepted, will bless a woman throughout her life whether she wears heels and loves shopping or whether she serves the hungry in her jeans and comfy t-shirt. It is my prayer that each girl in AHG and beyond learns that she is beautifully and wonderfully made. Through her unique gifts and personality, may she embrace her femininity to become a Christ following servant leader who is honoring, relational, anchored in Christ, and competent: a woman of integrity. Consider sharing Proverbs 31 with your precious daughter. And please enjoy this necessary and thought-provoking issue of Heritage Headlines…for a time such as this. Serving Him,

BEHIND THE COVER Did you know that all AHG publications, social media photos, and video content feature the smiling faces of real-live American Heritage Girls? Even AHGstore merchandise is worn not by models, but by girls registered in the program! The AHG Marketing & Communications Team creates regular opportunities to photograph AHG girls and volunteers, hosting Cincinnati-local Troops at photoshoots and photographing girls from across the country at national events. As the AHGstore prepared to launch a new line of fall merchandise, there was a need to model and photograph each piece from the exciting collection of new items. Ohio Troops, like OH0056, joined AHG Staff, including the photographer of this image, Audrey Hornsby, AHG’s Financial Specialist, for a socially-distanced outdoor photoshoot at Hueston Woods State Park. SERVICESTORIES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ACTIVE CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES

VIRGINIA PIONEERS & PATRIOTS COMBINE SERVICE AND FUN IN THE OUTER BANKS

This summer, the Pioneer and Patriot (PI/PA) Unit from Pembroke-area Troop VA2345 ventured to the Outer Banks, NC for a trip filled with faith, service, and fun! On the first day of their trip, the girls dedicated a day of service to the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, doing trail-cleanup and learning about The Lost Colony of Roanoke. That night the girls participated in the first night of evening devotions, where leaders could foster each

girl’s understanding of her identity in Christ. On day two, the girls enjoyed the summer sunshine while doing a beach clean-up and finished out the day with some fun, enjoying a visit to the Bodie Island Lighthouse and trying for a hole-in-one at the puttputt course. Day three brought the girls to Island Farm, a non-profit on Roanoke Island that teaches the history of the area through immersive experience. The girls broke a sweat weeding the horse pasture

and watermelon patch, and even made a few new farm friends! The girls closed out the trip with some photo-worthy fun—a sunset cruise around the Outer Banks! These PI/PAs will forever remember that they can be of service to any community, all while rooting themselves in faith and having plenty of fun!

OHIO TROOP EASES BACK TO SCHOOL SEASON BURDEN FOR LOCAL FOSTER FAMILIES Four Girl Members from Cincinnati-area Troop OH3130 collected and packed 72 backpacks full of school supplies for local kids in need—plus enough supplies to outfit another nine students who already have a backpack! The girls hand-delivered the materials to Hope’s Closet, a Cincinnati non-profit that offers foster families the resources and services they need to thrive. The girls toured the children’s boutique, where they were able to refill shelves that were built by an AHG Alumna for her Stars & Stripes Award project— proving that American Heritage Girls honor their Oath promise and continue to provide a lasting legacy of service in their communities!

OREGON TROOP SERVES LOCAL WILDFIRE VICTIMS

HAVE A STORY OF SERVICE OR A CREATIVE IDEA YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?

Submit your photos and project details to AHG via https://bit.ly/AHGphoto for a chance to be featured on social media or in a future issue of Heritage Headlines!

As devastating wildfires continue to rage across the state of Oregon, thousands of Oregonians are losing their homes and businesses. Today, communities across the state are still working to recover from last summer’s wildfire devastation and the tremendous loss they suffered due to the fires. Seeing these struggles in their own community, the girls of OR0001 in Eugene decided to step up. The girls got creative in their service work planning, seeking alternative ways to contribute to the local recovery efforts, what Troop leaders called a “Home-Grown Mission Trip”. “Normally our girls contribute 10% of their fundraising proceeds to charity. This year, they decided to turn their giving upside down and donate 90% to fire victim relief,” said Linda Sebring, Troop Treasurer. Using their generous funding, the girls served various families in need. One such family was an elderly couple and their 12-year old granddaughter, who barely survived the fire that destroyed their Blue River community. “As they hurriedly left their house and drove down the mountain, flames jumped the treetops over their car and their tires were beginning to melt as they drove over hot coals,” shared Linda. The Troop bought materials and worked with the family to build a shed through the “Sheds of Hope” project to help them start rebuilding their home and their lives. AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS | 11

GIRLSTORIES INCREDIBLE TALES OF LEADERSHIP, VOLUNTEERING & FRIENDSHIP

PIONEERS AND PATRIOTS CAMP UNDER THE BIG TEXAS SKY This June, the Pioneer and Patriot (PI/PA) Units, along with their leaders, from TX0025 embarked on a five-night camping trip four hours away from their Corpus Christi home at Inks Lake State Park. The girls enjoyed an unplugged experience, taking to the great outdoors with ease and excitement! They hiked, swam, played games, and even cooked their very own food on both a butane stove and over an open fire. Another important skillset developed during their trip? Teamwork. “Whether it be washing and sorting dishes to fit back into the tub or hanging clothes out to dry, the girls did these [campsite] chores with joy! Of course, don’t forget resting in the open breeze to relax in the afternoon! A summer PI/PA camping trip recharges the girls for the next year of learning, teaching younger Units and [taking on] girl leadership in AHG,” says Donna Gonzales, TX0025 Troop Shepherd. 12 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

AHG PIONEER LEADS SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING FOR HER TROOP Can female-empowerment be faith-filled? Yes! The Great Flip, an AHG Program Alliance, is giving girls an opportunity to learn about self-defense in an environment that fosters their strength and identity in Christ. Callie, a Pioneer in OR4519, wanted to share her love for martial arts with her Troop and earn the Harriet Tubman Level Award, which requires girl to lead a Troop event. Working with The Great Flip gave her a way to flex her leadership muscles (and her self-defense skills too)! The Great Flip is an online self-defense, safety and faith-filled empowerment resource designed to give girls a fun, playful, and empowering introduction to the martial art called Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Girls can earn the AHG Martial Arts Sports Pin using The Great Flip online videos and lesson plans. HORSEMANSHIP BADGE

CAMPING BADGE Camping gives us an opportunity to get away from our busy daily routines and allows us to take time to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. Understanding the basics of camping and being prepared allows for a more enjoyable and relaxing experience. Summer is a popular time to earn badges in the Outdoor Skills Frontier! The Explorers, Pioneers, and Patriots of PA3031 answered the call to #AHGgetoutthere! The girls and their leaders enjoyed a four-night camping experience in the peaceful and green Ohiopyle State Park. Together the girls completed requirements for the Camping Badge at each of their appropriate Program Levels, and completed the “Free to Be Resilient” Patch Program. They put their newlyhoned skills to the test quickly by having to camp through three nights of thunderstorms! The rain made for a semi-soggy hike to and behind Cucumber Falls and allowed the girls to tackle some serious rapids while white water rafting!

Horses have always been a popular animal and a favorite of many girls. Horsemanship means knowing how to care for and ride a horse. Riding and caring for a horse is a big responsibility. Learning to do so correctly is essential for the health and safety of both the rider and the horse. When girls choose the badges they’d like to complete each Program Year, there are always a few popular options—and the Horsemanship Badge is a classic favorite! Seeing Camila, Ellie Kate, and Emmy at camp with “Nugget” you can see why! In order to earn her very own Horsemanship Badge, Ellie Kate, a Tenderheart in TN0911, practiced her equine skills with “Fancy”, a gentle giant! Ellie Kate got a small taste of just how much work it is to keep a horse—brushing, combing, riding, and even cleaning up after it!

FIRE SAFETY & FIRE BUILDING BADGE Fire is a very useful tool. Without it, our forefathers and ancestors would not have survived. Fire is useful in cooking and keeping you warm. A campfire is also a traditional part of camping out. It is important to know the equipment, safety rules, and process involved in building a fire. What happens when a Troop takes its inaugural camping trip? They check off all kinds of Outdoor Skills badge requirements from their Girl Handbooks, of course! GA1908 took to the grounds of their Charter Organization, pitching tents and setting up their very first campsite as a Troop. Together the girls enjoyed a night under the stars while forming lifelong memories. Explorers Addison and Paige built the fire for the Troop camping event, which allowed them to check off their final requirement and earn the Fire Safety & Fire Building Badge. CHARTER ORGANIZATIONSPOTLIGHT

ST. JEROME PARISH WI0214 OCONOMOWOC, WISCONSIN

This issue, AHG is excited to shine a light on St. Jerome Parish in Oconomowoc, WI, home to WI0214. Charter Representative Cheryl Millot and Troop Coordinator Ann Sarnowski reflect on eight years of chartering an AHG Troop at their parish and the significant impact AHG has had on their community.

ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPACTFUL FORCE IN THE WELL-BEING OF AN AHG TROOP IS THE CHARTER ORGANIZATION. Every Troop is owned by a Charter Organization, which is typically a church, school, or similarly-aligned Christian organization. Without the support of their Charter Organization, an AHG Troop would not exist. When the Charter Organization and Charter Representative are involved beyond simply providing meeting space, the AHG Ministry can have an incredible impact on the outreach of the organization.

Cheryl Millot

16 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

WHY DID YOUR PARISH DECIDE TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP?

Our church decided to charter an AHG Troop because alternative scouting-type organizations at the time were not aligning with our Catholic faith the way we wanted them to. American Heritage Girls was an option so many of the parents could support and get behind. The Christ-centered program provided an opportunity for our girls to continue to practice their faith with their friends in a fun environment.

HOW MANY YEARS HAS YOUR PARISH HAD AN AHG TROOP?

Our Troop was chartered in 2014, so we are preparing for our eighth year as a Troop!

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN GROWTH IN YOUR PARISH’S MINISTRY PROGRAMMING SINCE CHARTERING AN AHG TROOP? Our AHG Troop has been a really unique gateway for so many of our families to get more involved in our parish. Our AHG families participate in so many parish activities because they feel a connection to the parish and there are so many wonderful and meaningful opportunities to serve.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER POTENTIAL CHARTER ORGANIZATIONS LOOKING TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP? Don’t delay! The chartering process can take some time, so if there’s interest now, get started now! As Patti Garibay has said, “God doesn’t call the equipped, he equips the called!” God will provide! We see His hand in so much that we do.

Charter Organizations serve a crucial role in the AHG Ministry, as they own and operate AHG Troops. Though volunteers implement the AHG Program, the Charter Organization is able to customize their AHG Troop to best accomplish their ministry goals.

For more information on the chartering process, visit americanheritagegirls.org/start-a-troop/charter-organizations

IDENTITY

in GIRLHOOD

Honoring God-Given Femininity While Building Women of Integrity

T

he gender identity of today’s girls is one of the most difficult spiritual battlegrounds on which today’s families struggle. The world tells our children that a girl’s identity lies in whom she says she is or isn’t—that the ability to determine her core essence depends on her own fragile understanding to decide. In fact, Barna Research Group’s 2019 Gen Z Study found that

“one-third of teens say gender is how a person feels inside, not their birth sex.” But believers know this is to be a dangerous falsehood.

God designed each person with tender, loving care exactly the way He wanted us to be. But that same Barna Study found that “seven out of 10 teens believe it’s acceptable to be born one gender and feel like another.” The study goes on to share that “three in 10 teens report personally knowing someone, most often a peer, who has changed his or her gender identity.” This concept of “gender fluidity” isn’t something we can ignore. Today’s girls need to learn that God has created them, in this body, in this time, for a purpose. Scripture tells us time and again that God created us with meaning, that we were no accident, because our Creator makes no mistakes. In Jeremiah we learn that God knew each of us before we were conceived in our mother’s womb. In the Psalms we’re reminded that before we even speak, God knows the words on our tongues. In Galatians, we’re affirmed that each of us was set apart for God’s glory. Empowering our daughters to live in the truth of their God-given femininity starts with first forming Photo courtesy of Kelly Pinkham

steadfast faith in Christ. American Heritage Girls gives a girl a safe, Spirit-filled, girls-only environment to learn the principles of Christian identity and discover her unique, feminine self. Understanding Biblical Femininity The world tells us that a feminine woman loves “girly” things—fashion, cupcakes, shopping, etc. But beyond the glitter lies the spirit of femininity at the inmost core of every American Heritage Girl. Every woman was created to possess a different kind of femininity—one defined by God.

In Genesis we read that God created Eve, from Adam’s rib, his side, to be his helpmate. The helper design is a concept that our current culture rejects, likening it to nothing more than servitude or patriarchy. But what if we came to recognize the great value of the word “helpmate” in Scripture—the Hebrew word ezer. This word is used commonly throughout Scripture, a term used to describe God—the helpmate to Israel. Together, Adam and Eve were created to work jointly, two parts of a whole, with purpose and a deep love for God. Man and woman—two separate gender identities that are equal, unique, and beautifully different in the eyes of God. Biblical femininity is not a personality trait or a list of shiny hobbies. It is the core essence of every woman. God created women as relational, nurturing, and vulnerable beings. Just as man, woman was created to be in relationship with her Creator, letting the Holy Spirit guide and direct her path.

If you find your girl gravitates more toward an afternoon of fishing than 20 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

one in a nail salon, remember this: God has given her the spirit of femininity, she doesn’t need to conform to the world’s view to prove it! In fact, it is this very cultural premise, that to be a female means you need to enjoy only “feminine” things, that is damaging to our girls. Our hobbies do not determine our identity, our nature, our very being—God does. Godly Womanhood vs. Cultural Feminism With the right Biblical worldview, “Girl Power” culture can be beneficial in empowering girls in who they are. But our culture has taken this seemingly pure intent and twisted it for decades, confusing empowerment with combativeness, entitlement, and immorality. But at its core, Christian understanding of “Girl Power” is an invitation to love, encourage, and respect each girl as the person God made her to be—a Godly womanhood. This understanding of Christ-fueled empowerment teaches each girl to honor her core, God-given femininity and encourages her to be great in her abilities. But more than that, to recognize that the source of her inmost power is of God, and with Him we are inspired, sustained, and saved. It is the prayer of the American Heritage Girls Ministry that girls understand both who they are and Whose they are. To believe in the truth of your God-given gender identity, one must first believe in a loving, intentional, and flawless Creator. That’s why every piece of the AHG Program is Christ-centered. By experiencing everything from outdoor adventure to sewing to leadership training in a Christhonoring way, girls recognize that God is infused into every

facet of their lives. When we teach girls to discover their identity in Christ, we open their minds to the idea that God has written a unique story for each one of them. The practice of discernment is nothing without a firm foundation in identity. First, each girl must learn who she is as a beloved child of God, a thoughtful creation. Only then can she seek God’s plan for her. Beyond answering the age-old question “What do you want to be when you grow up”, discernment is a practice that will reveal a girl’s vocation. God has a plan for every person, and it’s through discovering our truest selves and harnessing our talents, skills, and abilities that we can live purposeful, fulfilling lives for His glory. The earlier our daughters can understand who they are and why God placed them here on earth for a time such as this, the better they are set up to live joyfully and confidently in their identities. Dedicated to Girls-Only Programming “All biological girls of any color, race, national origin and socioeconomic status who agree to live according to the standards of the AHG Oath and the AHG Creed are invited to be members of American Heritage Girls.” The AHG Inclusion Policy says it all—American Heritage Girls has been, is, and always will be a program solely for girls. Born in 1995 out of a desire to honor God through scout-type ministry methods, American Heritage Girls equips girls with a space and experience designed specifically for them, with their physical, mental, social, spiritual, and emotional needs in mind.

Through Progressive Programming—that is, Biblicallysound programming tailored to the age and ability of the child that builds upon itself over time—American Heritage Girls have the opportunity to discover their gifts and talents, allowing them to grow in their confidence and self-esteem throughout girlhood. In a word, Girl Members are given a chance to find their worth. In a world that places so much of a girl’s self-worth on the way others perceive her, AHG strives to teach girls that they are already blessed with value beyond measure in the eyes of the Heavenly Father. In knowing they are valuable, meaningful, and beloved daughters of the King, our daughters can navigate girlhood with a bit more grace! AHG’s Mission is to build up women of integrity, and that starts with girls who are honoring, relational, anchored, and competent. When a girl is wholesomely fostered and encouraged in the light of Christ, she is firm in her understanding of herself.

A girl who is anchored in Christ’s love does not consistently seek validation elsewhere or reject the way she was created—SHE EMBRACES WHO SHE IS BECAUSE SHE KNOWS SHE IS GOD’S MASTERPIECE. AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS | 21

Thanks to her deep faith in the Lord and the support of her loved ones, Sarah was able to complete the required service hours, leave a lasting impact on the Friendship Bible Church’s choir room, learn how to write professionally, and pass a Board of Review. “A Board of review is like a job interview. So through the board of reviews and writing the resume AHG has prepared me for work life,” said Sarah. Today, Sarah works at a little slice of heaven—“Lake Swan Camp.” There Sarah contributes to the day-to-day operations of the camp, welcoming and caring for visitors during their stay. Her friendly spirit and love for the Lord sustains her through her work in providing campers with a relaxing and recharging visit! Since 1993, SAMARITAN’S PURSE HAS DELIVERED

more than 188 million Operation Christmas Child (OCC) shoeboxes to children in over 170 countries and territories. Thanks to the joyful support of American Heritage Girls Troops across the country, thousands more children will be blessed with good news and great joy this holiday season. “The altruistic act of kindness in building and sending a shoebox molds the hearts of our future servant leaders while building empathy for their international sisters and brothers. I can’t think of a better way for kids to share the love of Christ while praying for the impact of their gift from generation to generation.” —Patti Garibay American Heritage Girls Founder and Executive Director

DID YOU KNOW?

1

EVERY AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRL IS INVITED

to change the life of a child through OCC. AHG’s goal to pack 25 shoeboxes per Troop was such an awesome success last year, we’re doing it again! With over 1,200 active AHG Troops registered for the 2021-2022 Program Year, we’re looking to spread the gospel to 27,500 children this year! 24 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

2

AHG TROOPS WHO PACK AT LEAST 25 SHOEBOXES

and log their efforts are entered to win a brand-new prize this Program Year! Participating in the #AHG25ShoeboxChallenge this year comes with a chance for a tasty reward! Troops that pack 25 shoeboxes (or more) are entered into a drawing to win a pizza party for the entire Troop hosted by OCC! The party not only includes plenty of slices for all, but also an opportunity to hear from an OCC Full Circle Speaker. This speaker, a shoebox recipient turned OCC ambassador, will share with your Troop their very own real-life story about how a shoebox can change a child’s life. AHG will also feature your Troop’s celebration in an upcoming issue of Heritage Headlines. To submit your Troop’s shoebox count, visit http://ahg.pub/OCCshoeboxcounts21

3

OCC CREATES A SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE PATCH

for American Heritage Girls each year! The first time a girl packs a shoebox, she fixes the OCC logo patch to her vest or sash. Every year after that, she can order a commemorative patch (this year featuring toy musical instruments!) to recognize the Troop’s shoebox packing efforts.

4

NATIONAL COLLECTION WEEK IS NOVEMBER 15-22, 2021.

There are nearly 5,000 drop-off locations across the United States where you can deliver your shoebox. (Don’t forget to place a rubber band around each shoebox to keep all your precious goodies inside!)

5

PACKING YOUR SHOEBOX IS JUST THE START!

Be sure to cover ministry costs associated with each shoebox by donating $9. By including this small donation, you’re covering the shipping and handling costs associated with getting a box to a child in need so OCC can spread the joy of the gospel across the globe. Plus, if you give online you can “Track Your Box” and see its journey to the recipient! I learned that when we go with God’s will, life becomes so much brighter. Not necessarily easier, but definitely worth it. My first idea for my project wasn’t God’s plan but when I went with His plan and changed my idea, I felt a burden lifted off of my shoulders and I felt truly at peace. The main revelation I had when it came to the American Heritage Girls Oath, Creed, and Mission is the word “Loyal” and “serving my country”. Loyalty is supporting something even when it is not popular or easy. Serving my country doesn’t always mean going into the military. It means supporting those who are and who were in the military. It means taking care of our country’s history and preserving it for the next generation.

HIGHIMPACT INSIGHT ADVICE FROM DEDICATED HIGH IMPACT VOLUNTEERS Brian Thorsen became an active AHG Adult Member in 2012, volunteering in many different roles over the last nine years, and currently serves as the Explorer Leader in MN0300. Brian served as a Ministry Expansion Lead from 2016-2020 and has been a Hometown Mentor since 2020 for Troops in the Twin Cities North Metro Area. Above all, Brian may be best known for his gaga ball skills and his dominance in the pit at G.R.A.C.E camp, a regional AHG camp.

Our world bombards us with negative influences. We hear day in and day out that one’s feelings are reality and that you simply cannot oppose an “individual’s reality”. We’re living in a selfperpetuating, poisonous culture of moral relativity.

along with a supportive and honest message of what is to be a daughter of the King. It was an answer to my prayers.

The negative forces that speak to our girls through every aspect of life have become mainstreamed at an ever-accelerating rate. Our girls are reading, watching, hearing, and seeing a human experience much different than the one God designed so perfectly for His beloved creation. Instead of celebrating the goodness and truth in our Godly design, culture tells our girls that their own feelings actually create their reality, and that it is wrong to hold one another accountable to the truth of our circumstances.

I couldn’t wait to share AHG with other families in my community. I am the type of person that once I find something good, I have to share it! I remember at our first information night a mother asked, “why are their male leaders in your Troop”? There were two fathers on my first Troop’s Ministry Team—a practice not permitted in other girls-only scouting-type organizations—so the question made sense. Our answer, of course, was that fathers are welcome as leaders too! What a blessing it is to not only work with our daughters, but to also to be a masculine Christian role model to all of our Troop’s girls.

What a blessing it is to not only work

When I first came across AHG, I immediately fell in love with the phrase “counter the culture”. I was proud to be able to join AHG with my daughters where they were led by strong Christian women while I was able to lead as an unapologeticly masculine Christian man. This is what we as Christian parents are called to do.

with our daughters, but to also to be a masculine Christian role model to all of our Troop’s girls. The cultural desire to change the definition of sex and gender pushes the Satanic lie that there are an unending number of genders and that our gender is defined by our own desire. We are asked to deny truth for fiction. These lies are like the dripping of water on a rock. Through constant drips—what could also be called attacks—Satan invades our world just as dripping water will eventually wear its way through a rock. Without an established Biblical worldview and strong faith in God, our girls are at risk for this same corrosion. AHG guides girls in the way they should go. Secure in a Christ-centered, girlsonly environment, our girls learn to celebrate the girlhood God designed for them, fortifying their God-given identities. AHG’s foundational Christian and American values offer girls, like my daughters, a fostering environment in which they can become women of integrity. Our family was thrilled to find a program that presented a full range of scout-type opportunities

This Program Year, consider asking dads in your Troop to step up as volunteers. Perhaps there’s a talented craftsman, a trained chef, or a lifelong-lover of American history in your midst ready to help girls tackle some badge requirements. Could there be a financial wiz ready to tackle the Troop budget? What about a salesman who could kick up your fundraising efforts? Adult recruitment can be difficult, but it’s so worth it to take the time to invest in getting the right people in the right seats who can ultimately impact our girls for God’s glory! TAPPING INTO THE GIFTS AND TALENTS OF YOUR TROOP DADS WILL NOT ONLY BENEFIT THE TROOP, BUT GIVES GIRLS A PRICELESS EXPERIENCE OF WHAT IT IS TO BE IN COMMUNITY WITH GODLY MEN AND WOMEN.

NEW GIRL LEADERSHIP CURRICULUM, G.R.I.T. WITH GRACE LAUNCHES TO MEMBERSHIP

Angie Reck, Troop Development Coach

Amy Land, Stars & Stripes Award Support Specialist

Jennie Ferguson, Curriculum Development Specialist 30 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

G.R.I.T. with Grace premiered to AHG Members this August as an initiative to develop “Girls Rooted and Impacting Tomorrow with Grace.” This new girl leadership curriculum focuses on rooting girls with a foundation in Christ as they learn to lead others well. Concepts are presented in “sessions”—units of study and activities based upon topics pulled from the Biblical Leadership Badge. Each lesson is taught with the understanding that leadership requires both Godly grit to persevere through hard tasks and uncomfortable situations as well as compassionate grace to view those they lead through the loving eyes of God the Father.

G.R.I.T. with Grace is designed for implementation in an event setting of a Troop’s choosing, such as a retreat, lock-in, or campout. Each session has been created in “plug and play” format, so that Troops may select and utilize the topics that best meet their girls’ needs. In addition to separate lessons for both older and younger girls, sessions include detailed instructions and multiple options of games, skits, challenges, activities, crafts, and prompts for discussion and reflection. All of these customizable options enable Troops to fully tailor the event to their needs. This incrediblydetailed curriculum offers volunteers guidance they need to host an impactful and Spiritled girl leadership event. Included in the package is a Planning Guide packed full of ideas for scheduling, adaptations, logistics, decorations, and more—all that is needed to implement a fun and interactive event. The G.R.I.T. with Grace Curriculum is available to Troops for purchase in the AHGstore.

AHG, INC. CONTINUES THE DIALOGUE WITH AHGEQUIP VIRTUAL SPARK DISCUSSION After a successful week of AHG Adult Member training in February 2021 during the inaugural AHGequip VIRTUAL event, AHG created quarterly Spark discussions to continue efforts of providing interactive online training to Adult Members. Spark discussions offer practical advice to AHG Adult Members from seasoned Troop volunteers around a single topic while giving attendees time to share current struggles and exchange ideas in a small group setting. Spark discussions are FREE to all AHG Adult Members! The first Spark discussion took place in July 2021 on the topic of Adult Recruitment. Attendees were provided resources ahead of the online discussion such as a training video, worksheets, and reflection questions. Attendees also had the treat of being able to talk with and learn more from three of AHG’s Preferred Fundraising Vendors: Béquet Caramels, Driven Coffee, and HybridLight. All exhibitors offered a prize drawing and were available to answer questions and give information on their fundraising packages. In addition, the AHGstore offered a special prize drawing for attendees who placed orders that day on new merchandise. AHGequip VIRTUAL Spark Discussions are recorded and available to AHG Adult Members to view after the event on AHGresource.
