Friends, What an interesting time in which we are living. You might think these times are the fodder for the basis of blockbuster feature films or at least the reason to create a new video game. The human spirit has always feared an “act of God,” a global pandemic or any other cataclysmic event of which we have no control nor an explanation of apparent cause. In our fallen state, it is only “human” to feel hopeless and helpless when events bigger than us take over every facet of our lives. Fear is debilitating. It manifests itself into a variety of unhealthy behaviors. One such behavior, worry, is a negative focus on the future. Speculating what might occur under potential circumstances can provide each of us hundreds of sleepless nights. Today’s teens are experiencing the effects of worry and its parent cause, fear, in unprecedented numbers. A recent study cites 31% of all youth have diagnosed anxiety disorders. Note the word “diagnosed.” Imagine the percentage when we include those who have not sought medical or psychiatric help. Fear is at pandemic levels. Why so much fear? Well there is a lot to fear in this world—terrorism, COVID-19, economic downturns, to name a few. But in this fallen world, there also has and always will be reasons to fear; it is part of the human condition. Whether we are an Israelite meandering in the wilderness or an Acts 1 disciple being sought after by the Roman centurion, it is how we handle fear that makes all the difference. As Christians we are told over 500 times in the Bible not to fear. That is a fear warning for virtually every day of the year and then some. The Lord warns us that fear that results in worry is not from Him, it is from the adversary. He knows that fear can keep His followers from fulfilling the destiny that He has designed for us, and so He warns us in His precious word. The apostle Paul spoke about fear regularly. He warns the people of Philippi: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7, NIV) Yes, fear is part of the human condition, but as part of the Body of Christ we are called to faith over fear. We are called to know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that God will never leave us or forsake us. My prayer at this time of anxiety and distress, is for each of us to dismiss fear and serve as a beacon of certainty that we serve a sovereign God who is the creator of the earth, the Prince of Peace, the Alpha and the Omega and the Lord that provides (Jehovah Jireh). Faith over fear. May the Lord bless you and keep you,

We asked, you answered! American Heritage Girls is thrilled to announce the release of the NEW 2020 Girl Handbooks that will be available this summer! For the first time ever, there are THREE Girl Handbooks—an AHG Pathfinder Handbook, an AHG Tenderheart & Explorer Handbook, and an AHG Pioneer & Patriot Handbook! “I for one am excited to see a new handbook, badges and sports pins! We will be looking forward to seeing them at Convention this summer! I will have two Patriots at the time the original books retire but that’s ok. My girls are disappointed that some of the names of the badges are changing but I reminded them that doesn’t mean they can’t still call them what they’ve always known them to be. Change isn’t always easy but sometimes it can be fun!” –Karen Holzwarth “Thank you so much for updating the handbooks. I know that was no easy way to go about doing it but I have long desired a more mature look/feel for the Pioneer/ Patriot Levels.” –Elizabeth Wright “I’m excited about some of the new badges! Especially the medical one. Thank you for updating the handbooks.

I know the timing isn’t right for everyone but I think the changes were needed. Excited to pick one up at Convention this summer!” –Kari Osburn Scheihing

AHGSERVICE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ACTIVE CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES

COLORADO TEEN GIVES BACK TO HOSPITAL THAT SAVED HER LIFE In 2016, the unthinkable happened. Marissa and her family were in a tragic car accident that put both Marissa and her brother in the Pediatric ICU at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs. Marissa, a Pioneer in CO0002, suffered a traumatic brain injury that resulted in an intense, years-long recovery process. Today, Marissa perseveres while her body continues to heal and serves as a Patient Ambassador for Children’s Hospital Colorado. Marissa organized a fundraiser as a way to express her thanks for the medical heroes who saved her life, donating all proceeds to the hospital in order to further pediatric stroke research.

ARIZONA TROOP SERVES THE HUNGRY Mesa-area Troop AZ1318 embodied the Proverbs 31 woman by extending a hand to the needy. Together, volunteers and girls packed meals for Feed My Starving Children, a Christ-centered organization dedicated to providing nutritious meals to children around the world. Donning hairnets and smiles, the Troop prepared meals that would go on to be distributed through schools, orphanages, clinics, and feeding programs to the hungry worldwide.

She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. -Proverbs 31:20, NIV 8 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

TROOPS RESPOND TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC WITH GENEROUS HEARTS While an abundance of events and activities were canceled and communities were asked to stay home amid the rapid-spreading of COVID-19, members across the country kept serving others on their calendars! Adapting to their new ‘normal,’ girls creatively used their gifts and talents to serve those in their communities while social distancing. Pictured here: Explorers Elyse and Adeline of CA1565 crochet mask extenders to ease the fatigue of mask-wearing on medical professionals in the greater Los Angeles area. Austin-area sisters Hannah and Esther of TX4412 and Monica of Ann Arborarea Troop MI1871 put the pedal to the metal (on their sewing machines, of course!) to make masks for those in need. The girls of VA3125 got crafty to send cheerful messages of Easter blessings to local Blacksburg, VA nursing home residents quarantined away from their families this holiday. “The many ways AHG Members, near and far, are giving of their time and talent to serve others during a time of isolation and uncertainty, is a testament to the power of what American Heritage Girls is all about–faith, service, and fun,” said Patti Garibay, AHG’s Founder & Executive Director. “Most importantly, we are serving others by praying for our world each day as we all get through this time together.” Photo courtesy of Kelly Pinkham, CA1565

CROSS-COUNTRY PEN PALS BECOME REAL PALS

10 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

For three years, Beatriz and Blakeleigh faithfully wrote to one another after being matched through the AHG Pen Pal Program. At the beginning of their correspondence-based friendship, Blakeleigh lived in Texas and was a member of TX1204. Last summer, Blakeleigh’s family moved to California and now calls Troop CA0002 family. “Once we found out we were moving I contacted Beatriz family and we drove down to Southern California for a family meeting. Their connection was instant and we had a wonderful day together. Our family is so thankful for this friendship and bond they will hopefully share for a lifetime,” said Blakeleigh’s mom, Jessica. The AHG Pen Pal Program starts every fall, matching thousands of girls across the country and forming new friendships. Pen Pals will get to meet in-person, just like Beatriz and Blakeleigh did, at the AHG National 25th Anniversary Convention now happening July 21-24, 2021 Cedarville University.

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS BOND OVER ICY HIGH ADVENTURE ACTIVITY The Pioneers and Patriots of CO4316 bundled up in their warmest winter wear and strapped on helmets, harnesses, and crampons for a day of ice climbing at a campground in Lake George, CO. Girls faced their fears and tackled the 70-foot tall wall of ice just outside of Colorado Springs. The huge frozen wall is created over the chilly Colorado fall and winter months using recycled water and cold mountain air. Thanks to the manmade nature of the wall, there are different levels of difficulty to test, challenging both first-time and experienced climbers alike.

NEBRASKA CATHOLIC GIRLS PRAY FOR THEIR VOCATIONS AT OMAHAAREA RETREAT Pathfinders to Patriots, 76 young women in all, from four Omaha-area Troops took part in a Multi-Troop retreat at the Pro Sanctity Retreat Center in Elkhorn, NE. The girls from NE1877, NE1980, NE0508, and NE1016 worked on the requirements of the newly released National Catholic Committee (NCC) Religious Vocations Patch. The day-long retreat was planned by Patriots Mackenzie and Clara to fulfill the planning of a Multi-Troop event for their Dolley Madison Level Award. The day was full of fun activities aimed at learning about religious vocations within the Catholic Church and making new friendships with girls of other Troops. The retreat included a question and answer panel with four religious sisters of various orders, an outdoor rosary walk through the woods, prayer and adoration, planning and performing skits to learn about various saints, and a service project for Pro Sanctity.

EARNINGBADGES LEARNING LIFE SKILLS AND BULDING CONFIDENCE

FREEDOM'S HEROES BADGE The United States Armed Forces are regulated by Congress and were established to provide defense of our country. Many were instituted during the Revolutionary War. The six branches are the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Space Force. The men and women who are serving and who have served our country have made great sacrifices in defending our country and preserving its freedoms. They have the respect and gratitude of our nation’s citizens. 12 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

While working on the Freedoms Heroes Badge, the girls and leaders of AL2345 took a trip from Alabama to the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. The girls enjoyed the hands-on exhibits including reenacting Rosie the Riveter, following an active duty member during the war through interactive dog tag stations (they followed Coast Guardsman, YN3 William Barnes), speaking with the reenactment actors, and watching the in-depth videos. “The highlight of the trip was fulfilling requirements 3 & 4 with meeting a WWII veteran in person! The girls met Mr. Leo Terrebonne, who served in England from 1943-1946, as a PFC in the U.S. Army. He was appreciative of the girls' grateful words for his service to our country,” said Kayla, Girl Leadership Director and Pi/Pa Assistant Unit Leader.

CLIMB ON! BADGE Whether you’re indoors or not, climbing is a challenging sport that offers plenty of excitement and exercise. Climbers of all ages enjoy the thrill of reaching the top of the rock. With some basic skills and safety knowledge, you will be well on your way! Afraid of heights? Not these American Heritage Girls! KY0608 took to learning the ropes, literally, for a day of indoor climbing. The girls learned all about the safety, basic skills, and fun of rock climbing. AHG, Inc. Graphic Designer/Creative Lead James De Leon joined his daughter Lizzie for the day to capture the adventure on camera. The best of part of having your own Troop photographer? Seeing your progress in real time! Being first-time climbers, the girls were surely filled with uncertainty, but being able to see themselves navigating the wall on camera in real-time helped boost their confidence and fueled them for even more fun!

TOYS & GAMES BADGE Boys and girls all over the world have played games and owned toys since history was first recorded. The types of toys have varied and the kinds of games have changed as civilization has evolved. This Badge will help you explore the past and start you thinking about the future. It was all fun and games for the Tenderhearts of FL1231 this Program Year! During Unit time the Tampa Troop Tenderhearts worked to earn their Toys & Games Badge. They had a blast learning about all different kinds of games played around the world, coloring their own paper dolls, and decorating peg dolls. The girls embodied the AHG Creed word “Resourceful” by making baby dolls out of socks and crafted bassinets out of fruit baskets for a safe return home from their Troop meeting. Cuddled close with their sweet new creations, the girls listened to their leaders read Psalm 103:13-14: "As a father shows compassion to his children so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him. For he knows our frame. He remembers we are dust." “This became a way for our us to talk about how just like we made the babies and love them, God made and loves us,” said Holly, Tenderheart Unit Leader.

Biomimicry Badge Clara, Patriot, MI0214

The AHG Girl Impact Department received over 1,000 entries for the 2020 Girl Handbook Badge Design Contest! With so many incredibly creative designs to choose from, selecting the winners was no easy task. Join AHG in celebrating the 10 winning badge designers.

“I decided to use the example of a kingfisher and a bullet train for my badge design. When I was researching examples of nature helping to improve man-made inventions I saw lots of examples, but the nose of the bullet train being modeled after a kingfisher's beak to help reduce noise stood out to me, and I knew that would be what I drew. I am very honored that my design was chosen for the Biomimicry Badge. I was so surprised when I saw that my design had been chosen that I literally shouted for joy!”

Graphic Design Badge Digital Citizenship Badge Chloe, Pioneer, CO2118 “To create the designs, I just used Prismacolor Premiere colored pencils and paper. I thought of the Graphic Design idea from the color pallet on the Apple Pages App that I use to create newsletters for my Troop. For the Digital Citizenship Badge I just thought of the opposite of cyber bullying and came up with the heart text bubble, because it’s better to spread love than hate.”

Mathematics Badge Kayla, Explorer, VA1010

Identity Badge Taylor, Patriot, TX1202

Women of Faith Badge Liliana, Pioneer, AL2345

Entrepreneurship Badge Katie, Patriot, NY4813 “I found a lot of inspiration for this badge from my Troop. My Troop has a craft fair every year for which a bunch of girls donate their creations. The necklaces in the design were based off of jewelry my Troop-mates Amanda and Emma made. The cupcakes were from the sweets my little sister Abby and I make. The other items seen are homemade cards and maple syrup that are merchandise of two small businesses of girls in my Troop. Making cards is my business and the maple syrup is the business of my best friend Trinity.”

World Languages Badge Gabriella, Patriot, AK2008 “I was excited to design the World Languages Badge because I have started learning Spanish this year and am really enjoying it. I’ve also been practicing hand lettering recently, so I wanted to come up with a way to use it in my badge design.”

Medical Badge Abigail, Explorer, KS2020 “I have been an artist for about seven years. I love AHG so much! It gives me a chance to be with friends and do cool activities. When I heard about the Badge Design Contest, I couldn’t wait to submit my first design!”

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD PARTNER VISION TRIP PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD Joining dozens of volunteers from ministries and businesses across the country, Patti Garibay, AHG Founder & Executive Director, and Jenny Bolduc, MN1914 Troop Coordinator, attended Operation Christmas Child’s Partner Vision Trip to Trindad to hand-deliver some of the tens of thousands of boxes AHG Troops participated in filling this year.

" WE JUST NEVER KNOW

HOW ONE SIMPLE ACT OF KINDNESS CAN IMPACT THE WORLD EVERY DAY.

HOW DID THE OCC VISION TRIP OPEN YOUR EYES TO THE IMPACT AHG MAKES IN THE WORLD?

WAS THIS YOUR FIRST OCC VISION TRIP (or mission trip)?

JB: I really did not understand how much

JB: Yes, but I hope it will not be my

work the people who live in the areas do to spread the word. The dangers they expose themselves and their families to, even in a country that allows the Christian faith. It really is amazing the amount of people it takes to make these boxes to really fulfill their purpose.

16 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

"

last. I have a heart for mission work and this was my first mission trip. I was afraid to do any until my kids were a bit older. I have been packing shoeboxes for years and I'm known in my town as the shoebox lady. I collect all year long and in the past three years I have incorporated the packing with our AHG Troop. The girls love this mission work we do and I hope they will have a heart for it like I do in the years to come.

AFTER SEEING OCC BOXES DISTRIBUTED, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR AHG TROOPS PLANNING TO PACK BOXES THIS FALL? JB: Pack the boxes as full as possible! There were quite a few that only had a couple things and some kids were a little disappointed. I know they were still grateful, but when the other boxes had so much, that is just human nature. There were a quite a few boxes that were mislabeled for age or gender. With the boxes we pack I can see how that can happen, so I will have to try and pay more attention to that. It was hard to tell what gifts were loved more, it was quite a range. I think some of the kids were overwhelmed with all the stuff. It did look like hairbrushes (versus combs), purses, pencils, dolls, yo-yos, soccer balls, toy cars/trucks were good gifts. The clothes are difficult due to wide range of sizes. I know the kids that got a picture of the person or group who packed their box really loved it. Personalized items like that I think mean a lot. WERE THERE ANY MOMENTS, IN PARTICULAR, THAT STICK IN YOUR MIND OR YOUR HEART FROM THIS TRIP? JB: The first countdown to

opening the boxes still brings tears to my eyes. I have dreamt, prayed, and obsessed over these boxes and how each and every child must feel when they open that box for so many years. One of my biggest dreams was to witness one child opening a box and feeling the love of Jesus through those small gifts. I know that it really isn't the little toys, but it is the thought that someone from across the world did something special for them. So each time they play with that toy or use that pencil they will know they are precious. They may even share that toy or item with another child and tell them about Jesus. We just never know how one simple act of kindness can impact the world every day.

OCC VISION TRIP OPPORTUNITY Interested in attending an allexpenses-paid OCC Vision Trip next year and helping kids start their Greatest Journey?

Each holiday season, AHG shares this experience with a volunteer. Be on the lookout for information on how to enter coming this fall! AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS | 17

How Building Faith in the Next Generation Can Transform Our World

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS | 19

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” FINDING GOD IN THE DARKNESS

NATURAL DISASTERS. SCHOOL SHOOTINGS. GLOBAL PANDEMICS. WE LIVE IN A WORLD CONSUMED WITH FEAR. SO HOW ARE WE TO TEACH OUR GIRLS TO LIVE LIVES OF JOY WHEN WE’RE SURROUNDED BY A CRUSHING REALITY? Those entrusted by God to raise His girls are called to rise above the world and live in hope. We are each called to be light in darkness, hope in despair. We need to put faith over fear. IT’S TIME TO SUIT UP Girls today, especially our Pioneers and Patriots, are fully aware and scared of all that’s happening in our world. It’s time we step up, suit them up with the armor of God, and equip them to face the world as a spiritual battleground each day. Ephesians 6:10-18, NIV gives us the blueprint for the armor of God: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

Barna Group and Impact 360’s 2018 Gen Z Study titled “Gen Z: The Culture, Beliefs, and Motivations Shaping the Next Generation” found that more than any generation before, members of Generation Z (those born between 1999 and 2015, according to the researchers) are self-identifying as atheist. In fact, they’re doing so at twice the rate of the general population. The most noted reason for this lack of faith in God: “I have a hard time believing that a good God would allow so much evil or suffering in the world.” The majority of Generation Z and Generation Alpha, the newly-dubbed term for those born between 2010 through 2024, have never lived in a world where the United States is at peace. Their world has always been in strife, having been born in the age of fear caused by 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, and gun violence. Parents who grew up in an America where Christianity was the norm are faced with the reality that if they don’t intentionally seek out ways to help their daughters foster their relationship with God, the culture won’t do it for them. Girls need to learn about the overwhelming love of God, and how the schemes of the enemy try to veil it from humankind. GIVING PARENTS THE TOOLS Raising a Godly girl who is able to spread God’s love in our broken world is easier said than done. AHG thinks no parent should have to go it alone. Raising Godly Girls® is an AHG initiative to give Christian parents the tools they need to do so. Through blog posts and radio features playing on Christian radio stations across the country, Patti Garibay and the American Heritage Girls team are giving Scripture-based advice and teachings on how to handle issues facing kids today like anxiety, doubt, and grief. FACING THE EVERY DAY FEARS Aside from the fear-inducing stories we hear on the news, our girls come up against challenges each day that require grit, resiliency, and faith. From standing up to the bully at school to tackling an oral presentation in front her whole class—your girl is facing some serious obstacles. American Heritage Girls is giving girls a fun, safe, Spirit-filled place to build their faith and grow in resiliency. There are elements of the program that on a surface level seem like simple run-of-the-mill scouttype traditions, but when put through the lens of a Christ-centered program, it all becomes so much more meaningful.

Badgework can be a great deal of fun, yes, but what about the requirements that she doesn’t want to complete? Of course, there will be times in her academic or professional future where she won’t want to do the task at hand. But an American Heritage Girl who’s already tackled the challenging process of putting in the work? She knows how to ask for help, pray for wisdom, and believe in herself. She’s a woman of integrity who can rely on God and her perseverance to get the job done. Boards of Review can feel like an unnecessarily formal process for such young girls. But public speaking in front of a panel of adults as young as eight years old? Or praying in front of the whole Troop? Or leading the National Anthem at a community event? They’re opportunities for growth that most kids wouldn’t dream of attempting. AHG gives girls the safe, nurturing environment to overcome their fears and make it happen.

22 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

FOUNDATIONS OF FAITH It’s commonly understood that children who participate in faith-based programming in their youth are more likely to remain engaged Christians in adulthood. According to Barna Research findings, what we believe at the age of 13 is likely what we will die believing. If we want our girls to know Christ, we need to make sure they are given ample time and space to develop their faith in their foundational years. When Patti Garibay, Founder & Executive Director of American Heritage Girls, felt God’s tugging in 1995 to leave her beloved Girl Scouts USA behind, it was on her foundation of faith that she was able to do so. In direct response to the moral-relativism that plagued the world, Patti stood out in faith with fellow concerned parents and made their own scout-type ministry to disciple their girls. Hundreds of thousands of accomplished alumnae, developed leaders, and changed communities later, it’s safe to say that American Heritage Girls is making a difference thanks to a Christ-centered foundation of faith. You can read more about Patti’s story, the founding of AHG, and the power God’s faithfulness through it all in her new book, Why Curse the Darkness When You Can Light a Candle, available for pre-order on Amazon.

GIRL LEADERSHIP HAVING A BLAST DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS One of the beautiful things about being a part of American Heritage Girls is the ability to be in community with others: in Units, in Troops, in Areas, and in states that make up our great nation. Troops have the ability to come together to meet the needs of not only their own Troop, but others as well. Members of AHG Troops in Texas discovered a need to dive deeper into leadership opportunities for girls in their area. Together they developed a program that was opened up to other interested Troops. Here’s the story of how community was built across geography as told by Betsy Culbreth, Stars & Stripes Mentor and Unit Leader from TX2928:

You may have heard the adage “Everything’s bigger in Texas,” and that certainly can be said for the Texan enthusiasm for developing girl leaders. As a result of a high degree of connection and collaboration among AHG leaders across the state, Texas is home to a girl leadership and faith development program formerly known as the Texas Girl Leadership Retreat (GLR) and now rechristened as BLAST! Biblical Leadership: Advanced Servant Training. The interweaving of both faith and skilldevelopment in this training opportunity has been significant to many girls and adults. In 2019 the Texas GLR community decided to change the name of this program to Biblical Leadership: Advanced Servant Training. The new name communicates both the core of the curriculum (God’s Word) as well as its focus on servant leadership. BLAST is an intensive, Multi-Troop, threeday journey that brings together Patriots, mature Pioneers, LITs, and adults for advanced leadership training immersed in worship and exploration of what Jesus calls us to be as leaders. A service project, team-building activities, and social time round out this unique experience. Since the Texas GLR program began near Houston in 2014, it has grown to include multiple levels of training, preparatory development overnights for directors and team members, and a high level of girl responsibility for implementation of the event, including Patriot service in the positions of presenters

and course Co-Directors. In all, that allows for a four- or five-year progression from first-time participant to a Director Role. Participants leave excited to implement what they have learned into their own lives and particularly their own Troops. One first-time 2019 participant, an 8th grade Pioneer, took this enthusiasm back to her Troop in Virginia: “GLR/[BLAST] was my favorite event this year! It was a fun and challenging experience that developed my leadership skills to such an extent that I’m helping my Troop start [offering more] Girl Leadership [opportunities]! I loved the location, the activities, and most of all the people. Everyone there was hugely supportive and uplifting. I highly recommend this [opportunity] to anyone looking to strengthen their leadership abilities.” Adult attendees, as well, find themselves blessed by the experience, not only for what they can bring back to their Troops, but for their own personal and spiritual growth. One adult participant from Michigan wrote, “My real growth as a Christ-focused leader came as I began to work my way through the course ‘homework.’ It was in the quiet of my own home where the Holy Spirit was able to speak to me and show me the areas in my own life that I needed to work on.” A 2019 GLR Patriot Co-Director from North Texas shared this: “At [BLAST], you are placed in leadership experiences even as a participant. The opportunities grow as you show perseverance through the course completion… [Biblical Leadership: Advanced Servant Training] is reshaping the way we think about leadership by giving us the best example of all, Jesus.”

Does your Troop offer an awesome opportunity for girl leadership? Do Troops in your area work together to raise servant leaders? AHG can’t wait to hear all about it! Tell your story and share your photos at http://bit.ly/AHGphoto AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS | 23

AMELIA BROWN, NC4673 STARS & STRIPES AWARD RECIPIENT #543

Benefiting Organization:

THE RALEIGH RESCUE MISSION

LOCATION: Raleigh, NC PROJECT: Transformed their covered parking area into a colorful playground and made improvements to an adjacent garden area so that the children would have a fun and educational natural space to play. TOTAL SUPERVISORY HOURS: 17.5 OVERALL SERVICE HOURS: 291 FUTURE PLANS My plans for the Fall of 2020 are to begin doing dual enrollment at my local community college, Wake Tech. I'm doing a “Super Senior Year” so I can take advantage of these dual enrollment classes and try to figure out what it is that I want to study. Because of this increased workload, I will graduate next May. I'm also planning to work this summer and next year to save for college and get some reallife experience. I'm planning to be a Leader in Training in my Troop and hope to lead the Pathfinder Unit. What did you find most rewarding in earning the Stars & Stripes Award? For me, the most rewarding part of earning the Stars & Stripes Award was seeing the kids at the Raleigh Rescue Mission play on the playground and in the garden that we made. Hearing them giggle and laugh as they hopped on the hopscotch and the other games and seeing them explore in the garden just made it all worthwhile. There was a lot of satisfaction too in actually doing the work. Having the help and support of my friends, family and Troop was also an incredible experience. I felt very loved. 24 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

“The playground that sits outside the CDC at the Raleigh Rescue Mission is more than just a structure. This project that Amelia created provides a world of imagination for our children. When children come to the mission they are in full crisis mode with their parents. This playground provides an escape for them where they can freely and safely play outside. The CDC provides an opportunity for children to play as children should. This playground helps our staff help them reach that goal.” -Kristen Bloch Children’s Advocate Manager, Raleigh Rescue Mission

ALUMNASPOTLIGHT Since 1995, the Mission of American Heritage Girls has been to build women of integrity. While the AHG Program targets those in girlhood, the sincerity and faith-filled spirit that is nurtured and grown through AHG continues as girls develop and mature into women.

MEET SARAH CONWAY Dedicated scientist. Outdoor enthusiast. Servant leader. When Sarah Conway (neé Moore) joined a little-known new program called American Heritage Girls in 1997, no one could have guessed the sort of impact it would have on the course of her future. Following in the footsteps of her older sister Amanda, Sarah joined OH0025 as a Tenderheart then called a “Tenderfoot”, the youngest Program Level at the start of AHG. The Cincinnati-area Troop was one of the first AHG Troops to charter in August of 1995. Together with her sister and the rest of the new Troop, Sarah grew in her natural leadership abilities, explored the outdoors, and discovered new passions. As a girl, Sarah loved earning the Geology Badge. Flash forward to today, Sarah is a Volcano Geophysicist in Hawaii. Thanks to American Heritage Girls, God revealed His great plan for Sarah through a handful of badge programs, countless outdoor adventures, and the steady encouragement of her Troop leaders. So how exactly does an Ohio-raised American Heritage Girl become a volcano geophysicist in The Aloha State? After earning her Stars & Stripes Award and graduating high school, Sarah left Cincinnati for the University of Utah. Studying in the shadow of the Wasatch Mountains, Sarah earned her Bachelors of Science in Geophysics and Seismology. Following her mountainside undergrad experience, Sarah became a Master of Science in Geological and Earth Sciences/ Geosciences by way of Penn State University. Upon graduation, Sarah took a once-in-a-lifetime dream job at the premier 26 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

volcano observatory on the big island of Hawaii. A day in the life of a Volcano Geophysicist requires a steady stream of focus, knowledge, care, and faith. Anyone who gets that close to an active volcano definitely needs a hefty dose of trust in God! In addition to discovering her passion for geology through AHG, Sarah learned some necessary skills for any volcano researcher: Emergency Preparedness. “As an adult, this comes up often with work trainings but as a child this was a rare and unique opportunity that has helped me and others greatly,” said Sarah. Sarah’s career as a Volcano Geophysicist is classified as a role in civil service. As a civil servant, Sarah protects her island community against the threat of danger associated with active volcanoes by offering her incredible scientific knowledge and observation skills. This skill for compassionately serving others is something Sarah attributes directly to her time as an American Heritage Girl. “I believe I truly enjoy helping others and my community thanks to the AHG Program guiding me through childhood,” said Sarah. There are a lot of different ways AHG prepared me for the life I live today. Leadership, public speaking, working well with others, outdoor activities, etc. But what AHG prepared me for the most was living a life of independence, kindness, and perseverance.”

HIGHIMPACT INSIGHT ADVICE FROM DEDICATED HIGH IMPACT VOLUNTEERS

Angela Vermilion is the AHG D.C. Metro Area Coordinator and has served with AHG for nine years. She has started two Troops in Virginia, VA0226 and VA5667. She currently serves as the Vice Coordinator with her local Troop. She is married to Tim and has three children. Her daughter Anna, received her Stars & Stripes Award last year and her daughter Megan is a Patriot. Her son Joel, 11, is a member of Trail Life USA.

We are battling against a culture that is tearing down the beliefs that we hold dear, and we can either be overwhelmed at the fearful realities around us, or we can choose faith. In all of this are wonderful opportunities to model how to choose faith over fear for our families and for our AHG girls. It is not an easy thing to do even as adults, but we can live it out in a powerful way for our girls.

in fun activities. As a fellow AHG leader once said: “Girls are all equal when they are out in the rain struggling to put a tent up together.” This can reinforce the lesson together they can counter the culture and grow stronger together.

In Matthew 14, Peter chose faith over fear. Peter chose to fix his eyes on Jesus and step out of the boat. As soon as he took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink. We need to point our girls to Jesus and help them lift their eyes off the circumstances of life and look to Jesus. Sometimes that will mean practically putting one foot in front of the other as they try a new badge or a new outdoor experience. Sometimes, it is stepping out of their comfort zone, as Peter did.

In my nine years with American Heritage Girls, I have discovered that there is a very fine line where girls might be afraid to try something new versus things that they are truly afraid of and might break their spirit. How do you know where that line is? How do you gently push them to conquer their fears and move into a victorious moment? One of the best ways to do this is to truly get to know your girls. It is important when planning your Troop calendar that you look for fun ways to allow connections with leader and other girls. When they are having fun and feeling connected, they talk. They will share their dreams and ambitions as well as their fears. Check out the Freida B. materials, plan a lock-in, a field trip, or an outdoor activity—create time for fun! When you know your girls, you will learn what things come naturally to them, and what things might be a challenge.

Girls will naturally choose what comes easy to them but by offering a full AHG Program, we will provide them with practical ways to choose to overcome things that are difficult and maybe even things that they fear. Join with them and try new things, talk to them about things that are hard for you. Lead by example. Encourage Troop Shepherds to share devotions with your girls on a regular basis. Offer opportunities for girls to earn Faith Awards. Memorize Scriptures together as a Troop. When we memorize Scripture, we build up a storehouse of verses that we can use to call to mind when we are afraid. It is these never changing truths that will help girls lean into Jesus in difficult times, times when they need to choose faith over fear. One of the greatest ways to have faith over fear is by calling to mind in Whom we have hope and Who we belong to. Social media is filling our girls’ minds with worldly values about what or who they should be. Reinforce who they are in Christ by reminding them that their Heavenly Father loves them, that they are daughters of the King, and that He holds them securely in His hands. Use badges like Daughter of the King to teach them these truths. Encourage them when you see them displaying a trait from the AHG Creed and remind them that God delights in them. You may be the only person that speaks this truth into their lives. We have an identity crisis in our country. Girls are being bombarded with falsehoods about who they are. We are called to help them overcome this. AHG meetings provide them with an opportunity to unplug from the world and come together with like-minded girls. Get them outdoors and involved 28 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

Another fear that girls have is the fear of not measuring up. Level Awards and Girl Leadership positions can be very daunting to the girls. We need to cultivate an environment of grace. We all make mistakes and the girls will too. It is okay to be transparent with them and share the ways you have grown in leadership. Let them lead. Stand back and allow them the chance to do things their way. Believe in them, encourage them, and when they make a mistake, show grace. When you allow for grace and share these journeys with them, you dispel the lies of the world that they have to perform or measure up to a certain standard. We are looking for faithfulness, and integrity, more than ability. We are raising up the next generation of Deborahs and Esthers, they need to have a place like AHG to cultivate all that God has in store for them. We will never know the full impact of what we do on this side of Heaven, but take heart, choose faith over fear, live it out, and watch God do amazing things in you and through you.

STAFFSCOOP WILL FITZSIMMONS System Administrator

Spreading the Word About American Heritage Girls at NRB American Heritage Girls took to the Music City for the 2020 National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) Convention, NRB 2020, in late February. Patti Garibay, Founder & Executive Director, Michelle BeckhamCorbin, Director of Marketing & Communications, and Coriá Tucker, Marketing Communications Specialist, traveled to Nashville together and met with media outlets and radio stations from across the nation. The event resulted in over a dozen on-air interviews for AHG and opportunities to discuss simulcasting the Raising Godly Girls Minute with Patti Garibay. Today, hundreds of stations now broadcast the Raising Godly Girls Minute across the country, including broadcasters in major markets like Denver, Houston, and Chicago. You can listen to the radio features and read parenting advice on the Raising Godly Girls blog, visit RaisingGodlyGirls.com.

How long have you been working at AHG? 1 year What do you do in your position? I am the Systems Administrator in the AHG IT department, so I keep all of the computers and technology running smoothly in the office. This quarter I even made socially-distanced house calls to get remote staff up and running before COVID-19 quarantine started. What’s your favorite part of working at AHG? There are so many reasons I love working at the AHG Office, so it is hard to pick one. If I were to summarize them all I would say that it is encouraging and uplifting to work with a group of people who love God and love the girls that are a part of the program. It’s a great joy to join my coworkers in working diligently and passionately to support and serve the Troops, volunteers, and families of AHG.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” -1 John 4:18, NKJV

What is your favorite part about visiting or being involved in a Troop? I got to visit a Troop last fall with a small group from AHG. I really liked how the Troop all seemed to have so much fun being together and singing to the Lord!

AHG Staff Adapts Amid COVID-19 Precautions COVID-19 changed the landscape of the American workforce. AHG is blessed to have already made great strides in mobilizing the staff to work remotely as part of the 2019-2021 Strategic Plan. For the first time ever, the AHG Office closed its doors and the AHG Staff went completely remote. The IT team worked diligently in the days before the state of Ohio began enforcing social distancing guidelines to aid AHG Staff in setting up home offices with their AHG tech. Utilizing online video conferencing and virtual team software, the AHG Staff stayed virtually connected through prayer and conversation. As the AHG Staff transitioned to teleworking, they also had to train a few unexpected co-workers–their pets! Pictured here is Lucy, who helped write the content for this very issue of Heritage Headlines with her mom, Erin Marco, AHG Content Marketing Specialist. AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS | 31
