On behalf of the American Osteopathic Foundation’s Board of Directors, welcome to the 2023 Honors Gala!
Whether you are here with us in person or joining us virtually, this evening promises to be a night filled with celebration as we come together to honor shining stars within our Osteopathic profession. Each individual being acknowledged tonight, whether they are a medical student, emerging leader, or established professional, has left an indelible mark on the lives of their peers, colleagues, patients, and members of their community.
We take immense pride in the remarkable achievements that these individuals have accomplished across our nation and within our profession. Selecting our annual winners from the outstanding pool of nominees is a daunting task. For every award, scholarship, or grant we bestow, there are dozens of deserving nominees worthy of recognition. To acknowledge the dedication of all the 2023 nominees, as well as the nominators who took the time to advance their applications, we have dedicated a section in this publication. We also shine a spotlight on our annual reviewers, who painstakingly read each application they were assigned.
This year's Gala offers a dual experience, merging the best of both worlds—live in-person excitement and online accessibility, ensuring that every Foundation constituent can join the festivities. None of this magical convergence would have been possible without the visionary leadership of the 2023 Honors Gala Event Committee Chair, Wendy McDonald, and the extraordinary committee members and support staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this unforgettable event to life. Our heartfelt gratitude extends to all who have contributed to making this event a reality!
The Foundation takes great pleasure in honoring our profession through this annual recognition event. It's a memory-making moment for the Osteopathic community to come together, not only to acknowledge outstanding achievements but also to reignite the flames of our shared passion for what the future holds. Let's use this occasion to express our heartfelt gratitude for all that we have achieved together and the limitless possibilities that await us.

Global Osteopathic Medical Outreach
Osteopathic professionals who venture to underserved corners of the globe possess a unique ability. They can transcend international divides, reminding us all that, at our core, we are human beings with shared hopes, fears, and dreams.
Global Osteopathic Medical Outreach is not just about delivering medical care; it is about fostering understanding and transformation. Physicians who participate in these missions take the time to grasp the unique struggles faced by the communities they serve, erasing differences and building bridges of empathy. They return with a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health, contributing to their own personal growth and broadening the perspectives of their colleagues at home. Through this continuous process of change, we dismantle walls of prejudice and nurture an environment where acceptance and unity thrive.
The newly established DOCARE International Medical Mission Fund at the AOF is a shining example of how Osteopathic kindness knows no borders. It is a testament to the boundless compassion and dedication of the Osteopathic community to make the world a better place. Tonight, with your support, the AOF can continue providing micro-grants to cover travel expenses for these missions, ensuring that exemplary care reaches underserved communities. We believe that the recipients of this care will lead healthier lives and, in turn, pass on their kindness, igniting a cascade of goodwill that spreads like wildfire.
So, let us join hands in embracing and championing these acts of kindness.
Together, we inch closer to a world where unity and compassion prevail, where we are reminded, time and again, that we are all in this together.

There, he serves as the primary caregiver for residents across five counties in Central Pennsylvania, extending a lifeline of top-notch Osteopathic medical care to those who might otherwise go without.

The AOF is proud to award the 2023 AOF Karen J. Nichols, DO, LEAD Scholarship to Student Doctor Jordyn Austin. Currently a fourth-year Osteopathic medical student at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine at Cherokee Nation (OSU-COM-Talequah), Jordyn has been actively engaged in various leadership roles, including participation in Oklahoma Advocacy Day, serving as Secretary for the Gold Humanism Honor Society, President and Cherokee Nation Representative for the Oklahoma Osteopathic Obstetrics and Gynecology Student Association, acting as an Ambassador for the OSU-COM Office of Admissions and Recruitment, representing the Learning Resources Committee for the OSU-COM Class of 2024, and mentoring through the Undergraduate Mentor Program.
Jordyn exemplifies the qualities of leadership and adaptability, which she believes will benefit her future endeavors. Douglas Nolan, DO, Associate Dean of Tribal Health Affairs at OSUCOM-Talequah, recognizes Jordyn as a “distinguished leader and advocate for the Osteopathic profession and underserved communities.”
Jordyn has received numerous honors and awards, including the Osteopathic Founders' Foundation Leadership Scholarship, the Oklahoma Educational Foundation for Osteopathic Medicine Endowed Scholarship, and the ACOG District VII John Gibbons Medical Student Award. She was named the 2023 Student Doctor of the Year by OSU-COM.
Now in its 5th year, the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) and the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics Foundation (AOAO-F) Osteopathic Research and Education for Orthopedics (ORE-O) Grant aims to provide support for Osteopathic orthopedic research and education, with the goal of advancing the profession and creating opportunities for publishing such research.
The AOF and AOAO-F are delighted to announce the recipient of the 2023 ORE-O Grant: Collin Erickson, DO, an Orthopedic Resident at the Kansas City University Graduate Medical Consortium with HCA Research Medical Center.
Dr. Erickson has dedicated a significant portion of his medical career to research. His work in determining the optimal retrograde nail length location using biomechanical testing showcases the depth and breadth of his abilities as both a researcher and clinician. He articulates his findings clearly and concisely, making a compelling case for adopting them as best practices. By grounding his findings in facts and employing cutting-edge research methods, Dr. Erickson's anticipated results are easily quantifiable, alternative strategies readily identifiable, and the projected impact clearly articulated.
He earned his DO degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2022. Dr. Erickson has held teaching positions at the Kansas City University Graduate Medical Education Consortium/HCA Research Medical Center, the Des Moines University Distinguished Educator Scholar Program, and Des Moines University's Departments of Family and Internal Medicine and the Department of Osteopathic Manual Medicine. His work has been featured in numerous publications, presentations, and abstracts, and he has received a number of honors and awards. Dr. Erickson has also been actively involved in community activities, serving as both a leader and a volunteer.
Presented in partnership with the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), the Rocovich Research Award recognizes a practicing DO or Osteopathic medical student working to advance the profession through research focused on the biomedical, biomechanical, or clinical aspects of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT).
The AOF and VCOM are pleased to name Amber Brown, DO as the recipient of the 2023 Rocovich Research Award.
Dr. Brown is currently a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, IN. She completed her Pediatric Residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME in 2022.
Her research project, titled "Investigating the Feasibility and Safety of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment in the Pediatric Oncology Inpatient Setting," aims to address the dearth of clinical research studies on the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) in pediatric oncology. Her grant proposal noted that “despite promising existing data, no studies have explored the safety, feasibility, or efficacy of OMT as adjunctive therapy for acutely ill, hospitalized pediatric oncology patients.”
Jennifer Belsky, DO, who serves as the lead mentor on the project, had this to say about Dr. Amber Brown:
Dr. Derrick L. Goubeaux, DO, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Riley, noted, "Osteopathically trained physicians in the pediatric hematology/oncology field are rare, which exacerbates the scarcity of osteopathically driven research in this specialty. Dr. Brown, as a promising young osteopathic physician, is ready to address these gaps now rather than waiting for the future, and her dedication is inspiring to fellow DOs."
Dr. Brown graduated from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine (DMUCOM) in 2019, is a member of the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) and was honored as the AAO Resident of the Year in 2022.
"I have personally witnessed Dr. Brown's strong work ethic and her passion for enhancing the care of children and adolescents through OMT. She has positioned herself as an emerging leader in the field."
Open to residents and fellows, the American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) Training in Policy Studies (TIPS) program is a one-year fellowship, generously funded by the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF), designed to give Osteopathic physicians the skills they need to analyze, formulate and implement health policy at the local, state and national levels with the purpose of increasing access to affordable, quality health care. Started by Barbara Ross-Lee, DO TIPS provides its fellows with an understanding of current health care policy issues while also facilitating leadership opportunities. Since 2002, more than 160 physicians have gone through the TIPS program. Graduates have gone on to be awarded by the White House for their policy proposals; serve on the American Osteopathic Association’s Bureau on Federal Health Programs, Bureau on Socioeconomic Affairs, and Bureau on State Government Affairs; serve on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners; serve in leadership roles with AOA specialty affiliates; and serve in faculty and leadership roles at colleges of Osteopathic medicine.

The AOF will award the scholarships, grants, and awards listed below, before the end of 2023. Recipients will be shared on our website at aof.org
The Advocates for the AOA (AAOA), in partnership with the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF), created the Holiday Hug grant program in 2020 to help Osteopathic medical students or residents with year-end expenses.
The AOF Caring for Communities Fund was established in 2015 through a generous donation from Carole Crosby, JD and Larry Wickless, DO to recognize and support the work of Osteopathic physicians making a difference in the lives of people struggling with a variety of healthcare and social issues. Annual grants are provided to nonprofit health centers with a DO directly and actively involved in the operation and evaluation of the program.
The AOF Paul S. McCord, DO, Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. McCord who was a student and Osteopathic fellow at Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (MWU/CCOM). Awarded annually to one student from the third-year class at MWU/COM who has demonstrated a desire for and is committed to providing medical services in underserved and/or disadvantaged areas.
The AOF Osteopathic Researcher Expansion Grant seeks to advance the scientific training of new investigators who are at the cusp of concluding research but need ‘extra support’ to the finish line. This pilot grant has been created to support current research in process by new researchers, that through an extension of research, or slight pivot, could provide for a new discovery or outcome if additional resources could be extended. These awards are intended to fill a gap in existing funding opportunities, as opposed to funding new projects..
The AOF Prairie State Scholarship was established in 2015 through a gift from the Illinois Osteopathic Educational Foundation to provide financial assistance to one Osteopathic medical student who graduated from an Illinois high school.
The AOF Thomas A. Quinn, DO, Osteopathic Scholarships are made possible through generous funding from Dr. Quinn and his beloved wife Sissy and are intended to recognize Osteopathic medical students who are committed to Osteopathic principles and practice and has maintained an above average academic standing.
The success of our awards programs would not be possible without the nominators, who write compelling recommendations in support of students, residents, and physicians for our many awards, as well as the dozens upon dozens of volunteer reviewers who give their valuable time and expertise to ensure a robust and unbiased review process.
We are grateful.
