A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND PRESIDENT-ELECT
2023 has us looking towards the next 75 years!
November 2023 marked the Anniversary of the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF). As we enter our 75th year, we want to reflect on how this was a banner year for the Foundation and the profession.
Over the course of the Foundation’s history, Osteopathic medical students have benefited from the continued growth and evolution of AOF Funds, including our first donor Endowment. The Sterling K. Welch, DO, Endowment Fund, established in 1964, originally awarded five loans annually. In 2023, we awarded 52 Welch scholarships across the country. What started out as loans for a few, became a scholarship program for over 50 Osteopathic medical students. There were less than ten Osteopathic schools of medicine in 1964. Now, there are 41 and all can proudly nominate and recognize students as Welch scholars.
Our dedication to equity and inclusion has grown over the years to include LGBTQ+ communities. We celebrate the dignity and diversity of individuals in the LGBTQ+ and other marginalized communities. We are also proud to recognize and support the next generation of physicians who will help care for these communities with the Jeffrey S. Grove, DO, LGBTQ+ Pride Scholarship, entering its third year.
Our grants help the profession in many ways. Research Grants provide funds for early career researchers who pursue innovation, question the status quo, and search for new ways to enhance patient centered care, Osteopathically. Our 2023 Caring for Communities Grant helped physicians promote equitable access to language services in healthcare. And our newest expansion partnership with DOCARE International will provide numerous more physician and medical student travel stipends to spread compassion and care to underserved areas around the globe.
Moreover, our Project Future forums exceeded all our goals this year. By convening dozens of Thought Leaders and Subject Matter Experts from across the profession, we found neutral ground to discuss advancement opportunities for the growth and evolution of our profession. Two white papers have already been created with additional papers anticipated after the completion of two additional Forums planned for the upcoming year.
We thank each one of you for your dedication to the profession, your generosity to the Foundation, and your work with every generation of our Osteopathic family.
Sincerely,
A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO
So Many Stories of Support … and Impact
Thank you for helping us support the Osteopathic profession in so many positive ways.
I have been fortunate to have met over the years so many recipients of the American Osteopathic Foundation’s grants, scholarships, and awards. Over and over, I have heard stories about the enormity of the impact that this support has allowed:
h “That gift was the difference between not completing my training and continuing my journey … ”
h “The award reconfirmed for me that I was doing things right … and to keep up the good work … ”
h “Medical school is crushingly expensive. This scholarship allows me to focus on my studies, and not on the money … ”
h “This grant allows us to treat the whole human in one of the most disadvantaged communities and populations in the United States … ”
I have been privileged to have seen the exponential growth in our ability to support the profession over the last decade. That was only possible because of our donors, partners, volunteers, and board.
Thank you on behalf of all of the students, physicians, and researchers who have bene fited from your generosity. Because of your support, they are moving the profession forward and making enormous positive impacts on individual patients and entire communities.

MULTIPLYING OUR MISSION
Through five impact areas.
The American Osteopathic Foundation’s mission centers on the promotion and holistic support of the entire field and it is accomplished through our focus on academic excellence; innovative research; humanitarian outreach both locally and internationally; community investment; and industry honors.
WE INSPIRE AND EMPOWER THROUGH EDUCATION
Scholarships help defray the costs of medical school and recognize outstanding student physicians who are already making a lasting impact in the profession.
WE LIFT UP COMMUNITIES THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE
Grants provide support for Osteopathic efforts in local communities with a goal of delivering accessible care in rural and under-served communities.
WE OPEN NEW DOORS OF DISCOVERY THROUGH RESEARCH
The Foundation’s focus on research is growing rapidly as the Osteopathic community continues to explore innovative research that will change the course of modern medicine.
WE BRIDGE THE INTERNATIONAL DIVIDE THROUGH HUMANITARIAN OUTREACH
Grants provide funding for members of the Osteopathic profession to travel to under-served, underdeveloped, or disaster-stricken areas to provide medical care to people with extreme need.
WE CELEBRATE OUTSTANDING EFFORTS THROUGH RECOGNITION
The American Osteopathic Foundation celebrates excellence, inspiration, and influential contributions in the profession through its distinctive national recognition awards.
OUR GRANTS AND PROGRAMS
As the country’s leading Osteopathic foundation, we support the entire profession covering all geographies, specialties, and career stages.
The Foundation annually attracts hundreds of grants, scholarships, and award applicants. The extraordinary generosity of our donors and the strength and vision of our partners has allowed us to meet and exceed our ongoing goal to increase the number of grant recipients and the amount distributed.
The success of our awards is made possible by our partners who identify outstanding individuals and write compelling recommendations in support of students, residents, and physicians. Teams of volunteer reviewers who give their valuable time and expertise ensure a robust and unbiased review process.
In 1964, Dr. Welch made a remarkable bequest donation of $114,000 to the AOF, with the intention of providing student loans during a time when loans were hard to acquire. Nearly 40 years later, the Welch family heirs graciously agreed to unrestrict earnings so that the AOF could broaden its scholarship program and reach even more students across the country.
Since 2001, the Sterling K. Welch, DO, Scholarship has afforded the opportunity for one student per College/School of Osteopathic Medicine (COM/SOM) the eligibility to receive a $2,000 financial scholarship. Recipients are selected based on their outstanding academic achievements, active participation in extracurricular activities, strong commitment to Osteopathic medicine, and significant financial need.
During the first transition year in 2001, the AOF distributed five awards totaling $10,000. Remarkably, in 2023, the AOF proudly distributed a total of 52 awards, totaling $104,000; nearly the full amount donated in 1964! This significant increase in the number of scholarships reflects the Foundation’s sound investment strategy, strong management oversight, and commitment to supporting the next generation of Osteopathic physicians.
EDUCATION
Educational scholarships, the cornerstone of the Foundation, provide resources that help support, encourage, and empower Osteopathic medical students through various stages in their academic journey.
Scholarships serve as a testament to the efforts and dedication shown by student physicians in their pursuit of making a profound and enduring impact on the medical profession.
Our donors recognize and honor these students through their generosity and have allowed the AOF to ensure continuous support for the profession’s student physicians.
To strengthen our commitment to the success of our Osteopathic medical students, we increased many individual award amounts and expanded the number of available scholarships in 2023.
Spotlight: Jeffrey S. Grove, DO, LGBTQ+ Pride Scholarship
Alexander Golden, a fourth-year medical student at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), was the recipient of the 2023 AOF Jeffrey S. Grove, DO, LGBTQ+ Pride Scholarship. This scholarship was established by Dr. Grove to financially support, and nationally recognize, one Osteopathic medical student who is dedicated to understanding, educating, and addressing the unique healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ communities through Osteopathic medicine.
Alexander’s exceptional contributions to the field and his commitment to LGBTQ+ health policy earned him this esteemed recognition. He has contributed to numerous publications, including “Augmenting LGBTQ+ and minority identities within medical school and residency training,” which was published in the Harvard Public Health Review. Additionally, Alexander has presented at conferences such as the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association and the Medical Student Pride Alliance, where he shared his expertise on Safe Space Training.
Dr. Grove inspired the creation of the AOF’s LGBTQIA+ Equity and Inclusion Initiative to better address the healthcare needs of these communities. This initiative aims to provide educational scholarships, CME training, and diversity-enriching programs. Pride Scholars, like Alexander Golden, embrace LGBTQ+ identity, emphasize equal rights, and celebrate the dignity and diversity of individuals in LGBTQ+ and other marginalized communities.
RESEARCH
The AOF’s focus on research, that advances discoveries, is steadily growing. The Foundation continues to fund innovative research that challenges the status quo in order to bring new ideas and discoveries forward, including tangible and life-changing benefits to patients everyday though innovative healthcare models that place the whole patient at the center of care.
In partnership with individual donors, medical schools, organizations, and associations, our Research programs provide grants to individuals working to advance the profession through Osteopathic-oriented research.
Spotlight: AOF Rocovich Research Grant
The Rocovich Research Grant recognizes a DO or Osteopathic medical student working to advance the profession through research focused on the biomedical, biomechanical, or clinical aspects of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). This award is made possible through a partnership with the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Virginia (VCOM-Virginia),
Amber Brown, DO was named the recipient of the 2023 AOF Rocovich Research Award.
Her research project, titled “Investigating the Feasibility and Safety of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment in the Pediatric Oncology Inpatient Setting,” aims to address the dearth of clinical research studies on the use of OMT in pediatric oncology. Her grant proposal noted that “despite promising existing data, no studies have explored the safety, feasibility, or efficacy of OMT as adjunctive therapy for acutely ill, hospitalized pediatric oncology patients.”
Dr. Brown graduated from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine (DMUCOM) in 2019 and completed her Pediatric Residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine in 2022. She became a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Foundation provides opportunities for Osteopathic professionals to secure funding for projects that provide accessible care in underserved communities.
Ensuring healthcare services reach underprivileged communities and populations is crucial for the overall success of healthcare in the United States. The scarcity of physicians and limited access to healthcare in these communities significantly hinder disease prevention efforts, leading to compromised health conditions.
Through our Caring for Communities Grant program, originally created through the generosity of Larry Wickless, DO and Carole Crosby, JD, we offer financial support to exceptional humanitarian initiatives in overlooked communities across the United States. We specifically give focus to clinics that enlist the expertise of Osteopathic physicians to serve disadvantaged populations.
Spotlight:
Project ROLEReducing Risk for Readmission, Optimizing Language Access and Improving Equity, Jefferson Health, New Jersey
Cindy Hou, DO, is the principal investigator for Project ROLE, which serves to promote equitable access to language services in healthcare. She is also the Infection Control Officer and Medical Director of Research for Jefferson Health.
Following a successful federally-funded first year of the program focused on Spanish-speaking patients, Project ROLE plans to use an AOF Caring for Communities Grant to expand the program to native speakers of Tagalog, Cantonese, Korean, Gujarati, as well as those who use sign language.
Dr. Hou and her team aim to reach a population of 200 individuals with limited English proficiency or who rely on sign language within their targeted communities. Additionally, they have set a goal of recruiting five community members to undergo training as medical interpreters.
As part of the expansion, Project ROLE plans to distribute a total of 570 health products, including thermometers, first aid kits, and pulse oximeters. The program is also working to offer preventive services and connect patients with healthcare providers who speak their native languages.
The AOF has recognized Dr. Hou’s exceptional work with Project ROLE as a shining example of our mission to uplift communities. Her collaborative efforts to enhance awareness of federal rights to interpreters, educate the public on crucial health concerns, and disseminate best practices of “Your Health in Your Language” are not only advancing the Osteopathic profession but are also improving the health of underserved populations across the nation.
INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN OUTREACH
The Foundation has been bridging the international divide for many years. During the 2023 Honors Gala, we were excited to focus funding efforts on this unique aspect of our mission and dedicated the Mission Moment to create the AOF’s DOCARE International Medical Mission Fund
Osteopathic professionals who venture to underserved corners of the globe possess a unique ability. They can transcend boundaries, reminding us all that, at our core, we are human beings with shared hopes, fears, and dreams.
Global Osteopathic Medical Outreach is not just about delivering medical care; it is about fostering understanding and transformation. Physicians who participate take the time to comprehend the unique struggles faced by the communities they serve, erasing
differences and building bridges of empathy. They return with a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health, contributing to their own personal growth and broadening the perspectives of their colleagues at home. Through this continuous process of change, we dismantle walls of prejudice and nurture an environment where acceptance and unity thrive.
The AOF DOCARE International Medical Mission Fund is a shining example of how two great organizations can come together and demonstrate that Osteopathic kindness knows no borders. Together, through the generosity of DOCARE, the AOF board, and nearly 100 generous donors, over $225,000 was raised in 2023 to create this fund that will support tens of thousands of patients worldwide.
RECOGNITION
The American Osteopathic Foundation celebrates excellence in the profession through its distinctive recognition awards.
American Osteopathic Foundation – 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award
The American Osteopathic Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual whose extraordinary accomplishments and service bring a sense of pride to the Osteopathic profession. They are recognized for their integrity, commitment to service, generosity to others, and community involvement.
Karen J. Nichols, DO, was named the AOF’s 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Dr. Nichols is a prominent figure in the field of Osteopathic medicine, renowned for her exceptional contributions to healthcare, medical education, and leadership. With a career spanning several decades, she has made significant strides in advancing the Osteopathic profession, empowering women in medicine, and promoting patient-centered care.
She has served as President of the American Osteopathic Association, President of the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association and President of the American College of Osteopathic Internists and was the first woman to hold all of those positions. Dr. Nichols was one
of the first four DOs elected to the board of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, completing an eight-year term and serving as Chair from 2020-2022. She also served for six years as a Board member for the American Osteopathic Foundation.
One of Dr. Nichols’s most significant contributions has been in the realm of Osteopathic medical education. She has held several academic leadership roles, including serving as the Dean of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. In this capacity, she played a pivotal role in shaping the education of future Osteopathic physicians, emphasizing the importance of compassion, empathy, and patient-centered care in their training.
American Osteopathic Foundation 2023 W. Douglas Ward, PhD, Educator of the Year Award
Thomas J. Mohr, MS, DO, FACOI, FAOGME, was named the 2023 recipient of the AOF W. Douglas Ward, PhD, Educator of the Year Award. He received this award for his outstanding insight, personal engagement, never ending energy, and completely grounded academic training around Osteopathic principles. He generously gives his time, attention, and Osteopathic wisdom to medical students at every point in their education.
Currently Dean of the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM), Dr. Mohr has extensive experience in Osteopathic medical education. He joined SHSU-COM from the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM), where he served as Dean and Chief Academic Officer, playing a pivotal role in obtaining full COCA accreditation for the College. Prior to that, he served as the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIWSOM) in San Antonio, where he contributed to the development and COCA accreditation of their new School of Osteopathic Medicine and successfully launched multiple new residency programs through grants awarded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
American Osteopathic Foundation – 2023 Physician of the Year Award
The AOF’s 2023 Physician of the Year Award was given to John E. Balmer, DO. A dedicated Osteopathic physician, Dr. Balmer was recognized for his exceptional commitment to providing top-notch medical care to residents in rural Spartansburg, Pennsylvania, and surrounding areas.
As the primary caregiver for residents across five counties in Central Pennsylvania, Dr. Balmer has become a lifeline for those who would otherwise lack access to quality Osteopathic medical care.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Balmer actively engages students, offering them a unique opportunity to observe and treat patients under his expert guidance. By mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals as a Clinical Assistant Professor and Osteopathic Principles and Practice Instructor at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), he is ensuring the continuity of exceptional care in the region.
Dr. Balmer’s extensive professional experience is a testament to his commitment to the Osteopathic profession. He has served as an administrator for the Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Plus One Residency Program and has overseen rural health clinics at Spartansburg Regional Health Center.

THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS
Donor Spotlight: Carisa Champion, DO
Carisa Champion, DO, JD, MPH, built her relationship with the AOF, first as a recipient of a Human Touch Community Service Grant. She then later received an AOF Sterling K. Welch, DO, Scholarship and AOF/AOA Presidential Memorial Scholarship. Each grant, given over the span of four years, solidified Dr. Champion’s gratitude in, and appreciation for, the Osteopathic profession.
That’s why, while a general surgery resident at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville, Dr. Champion created a Fellowship with the AOF as a way to “give back” and to “pay it forward.” Because advanced training is so very important to Dr. Champion, as well as ongoing engagement with residents, she pledged $25,000 to create a fund that would underwrite the cost of one named Fellowship in the Training in Policy Studies (TIPS) Program.
Dr. Champion, who is passionate about promoting Osteopathic medicine, established the Carisa Champion, DO, Training in Health Policy Studies (TIPS) Fellowship. It is designed to harness the momentum generated by recent legislative efforts, including the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act, by identifying solutions and strategies through national health policy that will improve conditions for Osteopathic students, residents, and physicians.
Janani Naidu, DO, was selected as the inaugural AOF Carisa Champion, DO, Health Policy Fellow in 2023.
In addition to having been a Surgical Communications Fellow for the hit ABC show, Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. Champion serves as the President of the Health First Coalition.

I completed those programs when I was in residency, and I had to come up with my own funding for it. The AOF would like to thank all our donors who generously contributed amounts below $1,000 but are too numerous to list in this publication. Your contributions are truly appreciated and enable the Foundation to advance its mission, each and every day. Please accept our sincere apology if we failed to recognize you or have recognized you incorrectly in some manner. Please report all errors to info@aof.org. Your concerns will be addressed immediately.
FINANCIALS
The Annual Report presents a summary of the financial activity and financial position of the American Osteopathic Foundation for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2023. The financial health of the Foundation is strong as philanthropic giving keeps net assets and liquidity at high levels and, at the same time, provides for increased program spending to support the students who will become Osteopathic physicians and to support active Osteopathic physicians striving to give their patients the best care possible.
The Foundation received an unqualified opinion by auditors Warady & Davis LLP, reflecting our transparent and compliant financial statements under generally accepted accounting principles. The audited financial statements can be found on the Foundation’s website and the federal tax form 990 may be requested from info@aof.org.
MEETING YOUR MISSION
Impacting the present or influencing the future?
What philanthropic objectives do you have in mind? Are you looking to address a persistent issue, make an immediate positive change, establish a lasting legacy, or optimize your tax benefits?
Give to the American Osteopathic Foundation via debit/credit card or Venmo.
Regardless of your goals, the Foundation is committed to working closely with you to achieve them. We aim to develop a deep understanding of your philanthropic interests and aspirations.
Our primary focus is to simplify the process of fulfilling your vision and ensuring the maximum impact of your contributions.
We offer a range of fund options, including donor-advised funds, co-funded grants, and named scholarship funds. These avenues have allowed us to connect donors who share a common mission with opportunities that align with their individual philanthropic objectives.
