*To the Directors who concluded their service with the Foundation on December 31, 2022, thank you for your commitment and dedication, and for your continued support of the Osteopathic profession
To support programs and services that promote Osteopathic medicine and enhance patient-centered care.
To be the leading philanthropic advocate of Osteopathic medicine.
Stewardship: We are committed to strengthening our internal capacity in an effort to raise philanthropic capital
Collaborative Leadership: We advance our mission by investing in the future of Osteopathic medicine through strategic partnerships that align with improving patient-centered care.
Excellence: We recognize and honor excellence in education, research and lifetime contributions to the Osteopathic profession
The American Osteopathic Foundation was awarded a Gold Seal of Transparency from Candid in 2022.
The official seal recognizes philanthropic organizations that demonstrate a deep commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, and that operate from a position of strong financial health.
In 2022, the American Osteopathic Foundation experienced remarkable growth in fulfilling its mission, driven by strategic planning and audacious goal setting.
We are serving a larger number of Osteopathic medical students, residents, physicians, colleges, specialty organizations, and state associations than ever before, reflected by:
a 40% increase in Minority Scholarships
a 50% increase in State Emerging Leaders
a 48% increase in Welch Scholars
A snapshot of that growth and its positive influence on our profession can be found throughout the pages of this annual report.
We are especially thankful for the unwavering support of and collaboration with the many individuals and organizations that surround us, leading to these significant achievements Through the guidance of our Board of Directors, the generosity of our donors and sponsors, and the steady support of our partners, the American Osteopathic Foundation persists in advancing its mission, creating a meaningful and lasting impact on the Osteopathic profession
We offer our sincere thanks for all you do – each day - on behalf of our Osteopathic family
It’s a testament to the commitment and compassion of our partners, our financial supporters, our volunteers, our board, and our staff. It hasn’t always been easy, but the result of all that effort is undeniably worth it.
And the future promises many opportunities for us to continue our work. I see so much potential to touch more Osteopathic medical students than ever before, to inspire and empower them; to connect our broader professional communities and create lasting partnerships; to help build (and leave) legacies for our future.
Thank you for inspiring us and for joining us in building our Osteopathic future together!

The American Osteopathic Foundation’s mission centers on the promotion and holistic support of the entire field and it is accomplished through our focus on academic excellence; innovative research; humanitarian outreach both locally and internationally; community investment; and industry honors
Scholarships help defray costs of medical school and recognize outstanding student physicians who are already making a lasting impact in the profession.
The Foundation’s focus on research is growing rapidly as the Osteopathic community continues to explore innovative research that will change the course of modern medicine.
Grants provide support for Osteopathic efforts in local communities with a goal of delivering accessible care in rural and under-served communities
Grants provide funding for members of the Osteopathic profession to travel to under-served, underdeveloped, or disaster-stricken areas to provide medical care to people with extreme need
The American Osteopathic Foundation celebrates excellence, inspiration, and influential contributions in the profession through its distinctive national recognition awards.

The Foundation annually attracts hundreds of grants, scholarships, and award applicants. Our ongoing goal is to increase the number of grant recipients and the amount distributed, which we are able to do with the extraordinary generosity of our donors and the strength and vision of our partners
The success of our awards programs would not be possible without the nominators, who write compelling recommendations in support of students, residents, and physicians for our many awards, as well as the dozens upon dozens of volunteer reviewers who give their valuable time and expertise to ensure a robust and unbiased review process.
We are grateful.
In addition to managing our awards programs, we also help manage grants and scholarship programs for groups like the Advocates for the American Osteopathic Association (AAOA), the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (AOAO) Foundation, and the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) Foundation, through our grants management software platform.
Educationalscholarships,thecornerstoneoftheFoundation,provide resourcesthathelpsupport,encourage,andempowerOsteopathic medicalstudentsthroughvariousstagesintheiracademicjourney.
In acknowledgment of the dedication shown by student physicians in their pursuit of making a profound and enduring impact on the medical profession, scholarships serve as a testament to their efforts
To strengthen our commitment to the success of our Osteopathic medical students, we increased many individual award amounts and expanded the number of available scholarships in 2022.
Our donors share the understanding of the significance and have joined us to ensure continuous support for our wide array of programs
The American Osteopathic Foundation was proud to recognize a record-setting seven outstanding minority Osteopathic medical students as recipients of the prestigious William G Anderson, DO, Minority Scholarship in 2022 The number of recipients has grown exponentially thanks to a generous million-dollar gift to the endowment fund from The Heatherington Foundation for Innovation and Education in Health Care.
The 2022 recipients were: Rachel Christenson (DMUCOM), Phuong Daniels (LECOM), Nancy Githere (MUCOM), Breyonna Maddox (NSU-KPCOM), Eric Nicolau (WVSOM), Manuel Reyes (VCOM-Virginia), and Yvonne Vigil-Calderon (TUCOM-California)
Created and funded more than 20 years ago by family and friends of civil rights pioneer and Osteopathic trailblazer William G. Anderson, DO, the scholarship recognizes minority medical students who show exceptional promise, strong financial need, and a commitment to addressing barriers and inequities in healthcare

In partnership with individual donors, medical schools, organizations, and associations, the Foundation's Research programs provide grants to individuals working to advance the profession through Osteopathic-oriented research
Presented in partnership with the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Virginia (VCOM-Virginia), the Rocovich Research Grant recognizes a DO or Osteopathic medical student working to advance the profession through research focused on the biomedical, biomechanical, or clinical aspects of OMT
Student Doctor Colin Cox, was named the recipient of the 2022 grant
He is conducting two research projects in the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCU-COM) Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) department One is a feasibility study comparing a standardized soft-tissue technique versus a novel sham intervention therapy The second is a study evaluating the use of ultrasound in identifying anatomical landmarks aiming to improve palpatory skills

Ensuring healthcare services reach underprivileged communities and populations is crucial for the overall success of healthcare in the United States The scarcity of physicians and limited access to healthcare in these communities significantly hinder disease prevention efforts, leading to compromised health conditions
Through our Caring for Communities Grant program, we offer financial support to exceptional humanitarian initiatives in overlooked communities across the United States We specifically give focus to clinics that enlist the expertise of Osteopathic physicians to serve disadvantaged populations
Health Outreach Prevention Education, Inc. (H.O.P.E.) provides health services for Hepatitis C, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Tulsa and throughout rural Oklahoma, focusing on at-risk populations. More than half of H.O.P.E.’s clients are uninsured, underinsured, or underserved.
Working with several volunteer DOs, the nonprofit organization offers physician services targeting hard-toreach populations through innovative, multilingual strategies such as mobile offices, geolocation using apps, webpage chatbots, and collaboration with community partners such as homeless shelters. H.O.P.E. embraces a philosophy of meeting clients wherever they may live.
Mobile outreach is one way HOPE delivers services to its clients
The AOF Caring for Communities grant, awarded to HOPE in 2022, will be used to provide free testing, treatment, and physician services to underserved and uninsured clients
OurInternationalHumanitarianMedicalOutreachGrantsrecognize andsupportOsteopathicmedicaloutreacheffortsacrosstheglobe.
The Foundation has an almost 15-year history of providing travel stipends to students, residents, and physicians who voluntarily provide medical services to patients in rural and underserved areas across the globe (45 countries so far!)
However, during the pandemic, when international travel was severely curtailed, our board strategically shifted our funding to support international programs already in place and led by Osteopathic physicians, that provided critical services to the communities they served
Through these grants, organizations provided medical relief and services, set up health facilities, and educated healthcare workers so they can provide care to those in need.
Celebrating its 25th year in 2022, the New Frontiers Health Force has grown from shortterm relief work to undertaking long-term projects, such as building the Ngoswani Community Health Center in Ngoswani, Kenya
Led by Tonya Hawthorne, DO, and staffed by Kenyan-trained medical professionals, the Center has grown from a small clinic into a non-surgical hospital serving more than 25 villages spread over hundreds of kilometers
The grant is being used to purchase equipment to expand the Center's medical capabilities, decreasing the need to send patients to a hospital more than four hours away.
The American Osteopathic Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award is given to one whose extraordinary accomplishments and service bring a sense of pride to the Osteopathic profession and achieves greatness through integrity, commitment to service, generosity to others, and community involvement
Nominated by Barbara Ross-Lee, DO, the Foundation was pleased to recognize Norman Gevitz, Ph.D., as the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Dr. Gevitz is a medical historian, a scholar of the Osteopathic medical profession and its place in American medicine, as well as the author of The DO - Osteopathic Medicine in America. He is the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at A.T. Still University of Health Sciences in Kirksville (ATSU) where he is also a professor of History & Sociology of the Health Professions.
It was our honor to announce that Natasha Bray, DO, MSEd, as the 2022 recipient of the AOF W. Douglas Ward, PhD, Educator of the Year Award.
Dr. Bray is the Dean of the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation (OSUCOM-CN), the first tribally affiliated college of medicine in the country
The W Douglas Ward, PhD, Educator of the Year Award recognizes a leader who consistently raises the standards of Osteopathic medical education and inspires their students to strive for excellence in all they DO

The 2022 AOF James M Lally, DO, National Emerging Leader Award recipient was Rachel Young, DO of Michigan
The Foundation welcomed a sold-out crowd to our first in-person Honors Gala in three years, gathering to celebrate and honor the Osteopathic profession.
Along with our generous sponsors and the more than 700-strong crowd we raised over a half-million dollars in support of our mission! Every year, these contributions empower the Foundation to accomplish even greater milestones.
During the Gala, we paid tribute to Osteopathic medical students, residents, and physicians with numerous Foundation grants, scholarships, and awards. It was a recordsetting fundraising event, and we are immensely grateful to all the sponsors, underwriters, vendors, and donors who helped make this event happen! We are also thrilled to share that the Foundation raised more than $150,000 during the Gala to create an endowment that will provide scholarships for students who are members of SOMA and fund COM/SOM activities supported by the SOMA Foundation.

Each and every one of the Foundation's donors is critical in realizing our mission. And we are heartened by the annual generosity of members of the Osteopathic medical profession in support of our many programs.
We would like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank all those who have previously supported the Foundation. Your remarkable generosity holds immense significance, and we sincerely value your investment in the future of our profession.
Jeffrey S Grove, DO, an Osteopathic family physician, past President of the American Osteopathic Foundation Board of Directors, and past President of the ACOFP committed one million dollars to help launch the AOF LGBTQ+ Health Equity and Inclusion Initiative in 2021 This threepronged program is designed to benefit the Osteopathic profession through student scholarships, continuing medical education (CME) training, and fellowships
His generous gift helped establish the Jeffrey S Grove, DO, LGBTQ+ Pride Educational Scholarship, and in 2022, the inaugural scholarship was extended at donor direction to Student Doctor Austin Bolay (VCOM-Lousiana), at the Honors Gala held in Boston, MA
