Creativity & Arts Education

>> I

Did You Know?

n recent years, budget restrictions have forced educators to make hard decisions leading to across-the-board cuts in funding for arts education; the arts, however, should be an essential part of every student’s life. With all the focus on standardized testing, critical thinking skills, imagination, and creativity are not being nurtured. When students are given the opportunity to express themselves creatively through art, music, dance, or theater, they can enrich their lives, improve their academic performance, and make the word a better place. At the forefront of the battle for keeping the arts in education are psychologist Howard Gardner, educator and author Eric Liu, musician and social entrepreneur Derrick Ashong, actor and education advocate Tony Plana, and painter Erik Wahl, who urge us to remember the importance of artistic expression. 13

Arts education helps build students who are team players and leaders. According to Americans for the Arts, young artists are three times more likely to be elected to class office and four times more likely to participate in a math and science fair. They also read for pleasure twice as often as their peers.

Students who make creativity and imagination part of their everyday learning process become successful adults. Eric Liu’s book, Imagination First: Unlocking the Power of Possibility, is an exploration of how creative and imaginative thinking make a positive impact on work and adult life.
