AMES FORD LINCOLN

Since Ames Ford Lincoln first set up shop on the corner of Airport Road and Duff Avenue in November 2012, it has served the Ames community and more than doubled in size. Nick Johnson, General Manager and Owner with Casey Johnson, said the dealership started with 18 employees and around 140 vehicles and now manages over 60 employees and around 400 vehicles. The burgeoning car dealership offers a variety of new Ford and Lincoln models, pre-owned vehicles, a complete service department, parts, and tires. Ames Ford Lincoln competes with other dealerships with its “Best Price” policy, its pre-owned vehicle return guarantees, and their overall sales experience. Johnson said that all vehicles are priced to eliminate the need for negotiating and level the playing field for buyers. He called this the “Best Price” policy. “We put our best price up front and in writing,” Johnson said. The business also sets itself apart from the rest of the pack by insuring its pre-owned vehicles with a 7-Day Like it or Return it Policy and a 30-Day Exchange Policy. If a customer is unhappy with their vehicle purchase for any reason, they can simply return the vehicle within 7 days for a 100% refund, no questions asked. If within 30 days of purchase a customer is unhappy with the vehicle, they can apply the full purchase price to any other vehicle on the lot. Johnson said that shopping for a used vehicle is often times filled with uncertainty and stress for buyers and that Ames Ford Lincoln works hard to provide a relaxed shopping experience. Unlike some dealerships, Ames Ford Lincoln pays its Sales Consultants based on customer satisfaction instead of on commission. He explained that this practice helps ensure that Sales Consultants focus on what buyers want instead of steering them toward the most expensive cars on the lot. In regards to the Service Department, he added that Ames Ford Lincoln has the lowest dealer labor rates in the area, that all tires are sold at $5 above their cost, and that 2017 model year loaner vehicles are provided free of charge for service customers. They also have a complimentary shuttle service and provide free pick-up and drop-off. He added that it is very important for Ames Ford Lincoln to be actively involved in the community and local charities. Ames Ford Lincoln has partnered with local events like American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, St. Cecilia Gala, and started the “Wheels for Work” program in partnership with United Way providing vehicles to single parents in need of transportation. 4

AMES SILVERSMITHING Founded in 1976, Ames Silversmithing is a truly unique jewelry store offering a wide selection of fine jewelry in sterling silver, gold and platinum. Located in downtown Ames, this family owned store offers perhaps the widest and finest selection of diamonds as well as precious and semi-precious stones and cultured pearls in central Iowa. Owner Gary Youngberg opened Ames Silversmithing with his wife, Karen, after attending college for two years before dropping out to pursue a career in the jewelry industry. At first, Gary taught himself how to design and create jewelry, displaying his pieces at various art fairs around the area, which eventually led to opening their own store. Originally, Gary worked in silver and semi-precious stones, producing his one-of-a-kind jewelry creations. As business grew, both Gary and Karen received their diamond training through the Gemological Institute of America, the leading gemological laboratory in the world. Soon, Gary was working in gold, platinum, diamonds as well as an extensive

selection of precious and semi-precious colored gemstones. Since then, Ames Silversmithing has gone through four expansions and currently employs nine people, including both of Gary and Karen’s sons, Kirk and Kyle, Kyle’s wife Katie, long time employees Dave Anderson and Scott Sorem, as well as Katie Sutton, Isaac Prior and Cassie Underwood. With the design and creative skills of Gary, Kirk, Dave, Scott and Katie, the experienced team at Ames Silversmithing brings a wide range of ability to the design and creation processes. All Ames Silversmithing employees are trained through the Gemological Institute of America and are always happy to share their knowledge with their customers to ensure they make an intelligent, well-informed decision during the jewelry selection process. “Buying a diamond is easy,” said Gary. “Knowing what you bought is not. We encourage our customers to ask questions so they can put themselves at ease during their shopping experience” The cornerstone of Ames Silversmithing has always been to treat their customers with honesty and respect and to offer great value day in and day out while never resorting to “ mark it up to mark it down” marketing strategies so common in the jewelry industry. “We strive to offer competitive prices and our regular prices typically beat the other stores 50 to 60 percent off prices.” said Karen. Stop in today and see why Ames Silversmithing was once again voted “Best Jewelry Store in Story County” for the 16th consecutive year as well as “Best local business.” Also, be sure to visit their website, amessilversmithing.com, for a cross section of the wonderful treasures to be found at Ames best jewelry store!

BRICK CITY GRILL

For those looking for a change from the chains, Somerset is the hot spot for dining out in Ames. For burger lovers, or anyone looking for a pleasing array of American cuisine, there’s plenty to choose from at Brick City Grill. Owner Jason Mikkelsen has created a restaurant that offers something special. Friendly and sophisticated, without being too fancy, Brick City is an awardwinning sports bar with an upscale yet welcoming atmosphere. Mikkelsen hopes to broaden the mindset of area diners. “Brick City gives people the opportunity to dine locally at a place that isn’t part of a chain”, he says, “There is a uniqueness and a hometown feel...not to mention the best burger in town.” For four years, Mikkelsen has perfected his recipes, tried new things, listened to feedback, and ensured that his menu has evolved with people’s tastes. There is something for everyone, from appetizers to entrees, sandwiches, and salads. It is their burger, however, named the Best Burger in Iowa, that is the most popular. At the heart of it, Mikkelsen says, “It’s all about the meat” He has created a selection of burgers made with quality ingredients and carefully selected local meats. Award-winning Angus beef and the 60/40, a specially crafted blend of ground beef and smoked bacon, are offered in a variety of selections. The burger menu also includes a turkey burger and the Belly Burger, made from 100% ground pork belly. The pork belly also makes an appearance in the

JULY 30, 2017

Cuban Burger, complete with hardwood smoked ham, swiss cheese, and peppadew mustard. Unlike any other burger you are likely to fi nd around here, the Cuban burger was created out of Mikkelsen’s passion for exploring food and creating new flavors. As he says, “I like to dink around, try out new things.” A native Iowan, “Mik”, as he is known by friends, came here to attend ISU some 20 years ago, got started in the restaurant business, and stayed. Brick City diners benefi t from his vast experience as well as his commitment to excellence, good food, and a great dining experience. The burgers alone testify to that. And if burgers aren’t your choice, you can sample the selection of Game Day dogs, or savor one of the tasty sandwich offerings. There are classics like the Philly Cheese Steak, Tenderloin, or the Meatball Sub, made with homemade marinara and a slow cooked combo of Brick City’s Angus beef and 60/40 blends. A more exotic choice might be the Honey Garlic Chicken Sandwich that features lightly breaded chicken tenderloin, fried to a crispy golden brown and tossed in a honey garlic sauce. The delectable Asian flavors are highlighted with housemade ginger hoisin slaw, green onions and sesame seeds. Entrees include chicken in a tangy Jack Daniels® glaze, traditional Redhook Ale® beer-battered pub style Fish N’ Chips, Atlantic Salmon, and even a Pork Poutine. To complete the meal, there is a good size beverage list, a beer menu featuring a variety of domestic and craft beers, and a full bar. To complete the atmosphere, there are 13 TVs available, and as they say, at Brick City, “Every day is Game Day.” Whether you are looking to watch a game or have a night out to eat for the whole family, a short trip to Somerset, and a seat (indoors or out) at Brick City is a great choice, reasonably priced and always providing good service. You can explore the menu and find out more about Brick City Grill at their website, brick-city-grill.com.

CAMPUSTOWN SPIRITS

It’s a great time of year for Campustown Spirit Manager Diane Welter and Assistant Manager Kathy Leslie. “We love (Iowa State University) orientation. This is such a fun time of the year when all these excited kids come in and the parents are excited,” said Diane. Coworker Kathy Leslie agreed. “It’s fun to see so much enthusiasm.” Campustown Spirit at 2320 Lincoln Way opened almost two years ago during August 2015. They carry a large variety of licensed Iowa State gear and apparel. They try to appeal to all age groups from infants to adults and have items available from $6.99-$100. “Whatever you need, we’re going to try to fi nd it for you,” said Diane. While the venue is relatively new to Campustown, Diane and Kathy are experienced retail merchants. Diane, originally from Cedar Rapids, is a former manager of Borders Bookstore which later

8

OUR STORY

became the site of the BAM bookstore on South Duff. Kathy, a suburban Chicago native, was a coworker with Diane at BAM. Diane has been in retail for almost 20 years, and Kathy has worked in retail for at least five years. “It’s never dull,” said Diane. “It’s different every day. That’s the thing that’s nice about retail.” Transitioning from the book world to apparel has been a challenge. They have been learning to understand what students, alumni, and other customers are looking for at an apparel and gear store. “We have been shocked by the things that will come in, and we think they’re not going to sell, and then they sell like hotcake,” said Diane. “It’s been a learning curve for all of us to figure out the right blend.” Diane and Kathy like to go beyond just being merchants selling wares. They plan to meet with campus organizations to do philanthropic activities this fall. In general, they want to welcome anyone into the store who is interested, but they know food will entice many college students. “Going into the fall, we will be doing a lot more events out on our patio area,” said Diane. “One time we had Macubana (Latin American food truck vendor) come out, and they parked right here. We had tables on the patio, and everybody could eat Macubana… We will do stuff like that again throughout the football and basketball seasons.” The store is open Monday – Saturday from 10 am - 6 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm. For more information, call (515) 2922516. Campustown Spirit is owned by the Follett Higher Education Company.

Ames Tribune readers agreed. Ge-Angelo’s was voted best Italian in Story County in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017. Some of the guest favorite specials are: Steak de Burgo, spicy cavatelli, prosciutto-wrapped salmon and an assortment of risottos. “We’re kid friendly, as well,” he added. “Kids come in, and they get some pizza dough to play with while waiting for food to come.” The menu is available for carry out. second floor of the hospital. Quality Recognition Mary Greeley has always been appreciated for its proximity to the many communities we serve. We know that expert care close to home means a lot to the people we serve. Consumer perception surveys conducted regularly by the hospital indicate that more and more people are recognizing the hospital for its quality of care. Our quality has been recognized in many ways, including: • Breast Center designation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). NAPBC designation recognizes the commitment of Mary Greeley’s William R. Bliss Cancer Center to provide patients every significant advantage in the fight against breast cancer. • Selected as a “Most Wired Hospital” for four years in a row. This indicates a high level of effective, secure technology use for patient care. • Baby-Friendly designation by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., the nation’s authority for the implementation of the BabyFriendly Hospital Initiative, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund. The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Mary Greeley is the second and largest hospital in Iowa to earn this prestigious designation. • An expanded robotic surgery program. We now have two surgical robots, providing more opportunities for patients to benefit from this technology. Mary Greeley surgeons in general surgery, urological surgery, gynecological surgery, and lung surgery are trained in the use of the robot. MIKE’S BODY AND FRAME

While Mike Rolling of Mike’s Body & Frame, Inc. is proud of his family’s business and its 55-year history, he is equally proud of the evolution of what the business has become. “My dad started this business in 1962,” he said. “When you can be a part of a community for 55 years, that’s a big deal to me.” Located at 219 N Oak Ave in Ames (two blocks north of the DOT), Mike’s Body & Frame specializes in collision services like body work, painting, glass, and frame/structural work. In addition, they offer mechanic services such as seasonal inspections, brake service, general auto service, alignment/suspension, and computer scanning and diagnosis. Whether the issue is component failure or the aftermath of hitting a deer, Mike’s Body & Frame can help any car owner beyond physical issues like dealing with insurance companies and sorting out warranties. Going above and beyond seems to be Mike’s mission. “We fix more than cars,” said Mike. “We help navigate all those roads of some of the warranty issues and navigate all those slippery slopes with insurance companies...There’s a lot of drama, a lot of advice, and a lot of knowledge.” Mike greets everyone who walks in the door in a welcoming manner be it someone with either a quick question or a more complex dilemma. Mike responds quickly to help find the right answer for each individual case. Sometimes doing so translates into sending people to other local vendors, but Mike does not hesitate to endorse those fellow business owners who have a great deal of experience and knowledge to share. A job well done is a winning strategy for everyone involved. Mike is also looking to the future of the industry and hopes that young people will seriously consider the auto repair field. “There’s money to be made in this industry, but you’ve got to be good. You’ve got to be efficient and proficient at what you do,” he said. “If you can do both of those things, you’ll get compensated for it.” According to Mike, one of the best benefits of the job is satisfaction. “One thing that’s nice about this (collision) industry is there’s a lot of immediate gratification to it...We see (results) in a matter of hours. It’s awesome. It’s great. It’s fun to be in an industry that does that.” For more information, call (515) 232-7050. Mike’s Body & Frame is open Monday-Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

MOORMAN CLOTHIERS

The Moorman Clothiers story begins on April 1st, 1993 when Scott and Susan Moorman opened for business in downtown Mason City. Following Scott’s dream of owning a clothing store, Moorman Clothiers quickly became a fixture in Mason City’s retail community. On September 1st, 2005, the Moormans opened their second store in Ames after purchasing the Durlam and Durlam clothing store at 226 Main Street. A proven location and a need for a men’s clothing store with a small women’s boutique matched the Moorman Clothiers plan. Ames provided a great audience along with the close proximity to Des Moines and all of Central Iowa. Minor changes to the building and an updated variety of men’s and women’s clothing lines lead to immediate success and acceptance. Interior changes as well as a new façade to the building in 2012 have given Moorman Clothiers a strong presence in downtown Ames. Being a part of the Main Street Ames Community is vitally important to Moorman Clothiers. Downtown Ames is lucky to offer such a potpourri of businesses that cater to a large number of consumer wants and needs. A full service men’s clothing store offering men’s suiting, dress shirts and ties, as well as casual apparel, tuxedos and Big and Tall is a perfect fit for downtown Ames. Add a women’s boutique to that and it’s a match made in heaven! Customer service has always been a driving force behind the Moorman Clothiers experience. A combined 125 plus years of expertise between the 2 stores promises a proper style and superior product. Moorman Clothiers staffs a full time tailor to ensure a “custom” quality fit. Alterations are free of charge for the life of the garment. A customers complete satisfaction is our number one goal. Moorman Clothiers is a proud supporter of Cyclone athletics and prides itself on the growing relationship we have with Iowa State University. Our extensive selection of Iowa State Apparel for men and women is the finest anywhere in Iowa. We provide apparel for various sports and academic groups; we also visit fraternities to present programs about how to dress professionally. The Moorman Clothiers story continues with a strong commitment to providing the finest selection of men’s and women’s apparel. Justin Moorman, Scott and Susan’s son, joined the business in April of 2014 and will continue the high level of customer service his dad has provided for the past twentyone years. Moorman Clothiers wants to be the only men’s and women’s store you’ll ever need!

SLABJACK LLC

Something as simple as sunken or uneven concrete can wreak havoc on a property whether commercial or residential. A young business called SlabJack can help. SlabJack is a locally owned and operated concrete leveling business, focusing on eliminating trip hazards, improving curb appeal and redirecting water runoff. Two long-time friends began SlabJack Concrete Leveling, LLC in May of 2016 to serve the people of central Iowa. One has more than ten years of concrete pouring experience and the other has an extensive background in business. Together they realized they could fix concrete problems for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. “We noticed our neighbors, family members, churches, and communities with sidewalks or driveways that were in good

shape but had sunken over time. We felt the need to serve our community members in giving them a low-cost alternative to replacing sidewalks, driveways, and patios,” one of them said. They started services free-of-charge to a few local churches and libraries. “After seeing the end result and the look of satisfaction and appreciation on our clients’ faces, we knew we had to keep going.” In the first year, SlabJack completed jobs for clients in Ames, Gilbert, Huxley, Nevada, Story City, Iowa Falls, Ellsworth, and the surrounding areas. The momentum continues to build as the office calendar is filling up quickly for this season as well. “The most rewarding part of our job is meeting the wonderful people of Iowa and we’re excited to meet many more,” said one owner. “Our operation is currently small, but mighty. We hope to someday expand our business and provide local job opportunities.” SlabJack provides high quality work with a personal touch. STORY COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER

When it comes to living a healthy and well lifestyle, there are few body parts that do as much “heavy lifting” as your feet. But many Americans fail to actively care for their feet, leading to problems ranging from poor balance and mobility to chronic pain, infections and more. “The good news is that by following a pretty simple routine most foot-related issues can be managed effectively,” says Kelly Check, DPM, Story Medical Clinic – Nevada. “The number one thing people can do to protect their feet is use them. Regular exercise not only helps to maintain a healthy weight, but it increases blood flow to the feet, which is vital to maintaining function.” Literally, each step you take involves a remarkably intricate network of bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments. That complexity— combined with all the weight the feet carry—accounts for why they can be so prone to problems, including bone fractures, arthritis and plantar fasciitis. If left untreated, foot problems often worsen. Eventually, pain can begin to interfere with your ability to do even the most basic

things like walking upstairs or down the street. If pain alters the way you walk, it can lead to pain in your knees, hips and back as well. These problems can multiply, limiting your activity and affecting your quality of life. “The feet are our foundation,” Dr. Check says. “And without a healthy foundation we are at risk for so many conditions that can be chronic and rob us of quality of life. I encourage patients to come see me as soon as they begin experiencing discomfort with their feet. “The earlier we can intervene, the more likely we are to have a positive outcome.” But neglect of the feet isn’t the only thing that can cause issues. There are several underlying health problems that can also affect the feet. “Lack of feeling in your feet could be a sign of a serious illness, such as diabetes or a nerve disorder,” Dr. Check says. “See your health care provider or schedule an appointment with a specialist like me if you have unusual numbness in your feet or foot pain that is severe, comes on suddenly, or doesn’t improve with simple measures such as rest or over-the-counter pain medications.” With a commitment to regular exercise and following a few proven strategies, Dr. Check says standing—and walking—on a firm foundation is possible. “A lot of people fail to see how important the feet are to overall wellness and quality of life,” says Dr. Check, who cares for patients with a wide range of issues, including diabetes, athletic injuries, reconstructive surgery, wound care, bunion and hammer toe correction, treatment of plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon repair and more. “With the feet,” Dr. Check continues, “as with so many other things, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” If you are experiencing issues with your feet, please call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Check at 515-382-5413
