JAN. 10 COMMON GROUND RECORDING SESSIONS Story County Conservation is joining a project of the Iowa Association of Naturalists inspired by the Storycorps project on National Public Radio. Naturalists and volunteers will record participants’ experiences, memories, and stories about their relationship with nature and the outdoors in Iowa from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Jan. 10, or from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Ames Public Library. There will be more times to participate in February and March. To reserve a 30-minute time slot, email rbeall@ storycountyiowa.gov. Drop-ins are also welcome, as time permits.

JAN. 11 VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PRESENTATION Anthony Rhoad, a sexual assault reponse offi cer, trainer in hand-to-hand defensive tactics, will lead a presentation on violence against women from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Simply Mae’s, 601 Broad St., in Story City. You will receive vital and relevant information from Rhoad, who has investigated assaults on women for nearly 20 years. Tickets are $10 per person. MLK Day 2020 celebration to be on Jan. 20 at Ames Middle School The Martin Luther King Day Planning Committee invites all in Ames and Story County to honor and celebrate King’s birthday on Monday, Jan. 20. The theme

for this year’s celebration is Equality, Justice and Unity. The event will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Ames Middle School, 3915 Mortensen Road. MLK birthday cake will be

served from 6 to 6:30 p.m., with music provided by Ames High School Jazz Band I. There will be a welcome from the Story County Board of Supervisors, and Ames

Mayor John Haila. Meeker Elementary School students will sing “Martin Luther King” and other musical selections. See MLK on page 12

Placement auditions, open rehearsals for Ames Children’s Choirs Do you like to sing? Do you like to make music with friends? Placement auditions for the Spring Season of the Ames Children’s Choirs will be Jan. 6 through 20 in Ames. The program will be accepting singers ages seven through 18 into all four choirs at this time. Rehearsals resume on Jan. 13 and 14. All singers will participate in the Spring Concert on Saturday, May 16, in addition to other performance opportunities. Auditions for the 2020-21 season will be held for all four choirs in May and June. For the placement audition, singers may sing any song of choice but are welcome to audition without a prepared song. No previous experience or vocal training is required for participation in the choirs, only the ability to match pitch and maintain a melody. We are also look-

ISU student crowned 2020 Iowa Miss United States Agriculture

Town and Country Kiwanis Club replaces Little Free Library in Huxley Stan Carpenter, Leo Timms, and Dan Franklin, members of the Town and Country Kiwanis Club, recently visited the Ballard Kiwanis Club at its meeting in Huxley. After the meeting, they replaced the small library at Prairie Ridge Park with a larger one providing a greater selection of

books for young readers. These libraries are intended to be located in numerous places in the county for the purpose of providing free books for children to read near their home locations. The club will be considering working with Raising Readers in Story County and

the libraries in the county to construct and install additional Little Free Libraries. Encouraging early childhood reading has shown advances childhood educational development and are factors in thembecoming educated, informed and productive citizens in adulthood.

Alexis Stine, of Adel, a student at Iowa State University, was recently awarded the title of Iowa Miss United States Agriculture. Alexis is the 20-year-old daughter of Tom and Audrey Stine and the older sibling to her sister, Brianna. She was raised on a feeder-tofi nish hog farm and row crop operation in Adel. She is a junior at ISU, where she is studying animal science with a minor in agricultural business to continue her family’s five-generation agricultural tradition. She plans to graduate in May 2021. She spent the past year representing Story County in the 2019 Miss United States Agriculture program, judging Story County 4-H Clover Kids projects, assisting with Farm Bureau programs and making appearances at various events. Alexis is also an active member in Iowa State’s Block and Bridle Club, where she currently holds committee positions for the Spring Market Hog Show and the Proven to Win Pig Sale, and was recently a co-chair for their annual horse show. Outside of school,

Nevada FFA sells $23,812 of fruit Nevada FFA members sold $23,812 of fruit, cheese, and sausage to local customers.

The wholesale cost of fruit, boxes, and other materials was $15,108, creating a net profi t of $8,704

for the chapter. Much of the fruit was sold in customized mixed boxes the chapter makes by pur-

chasing in bulk and repackaging according to orders. Students were provided lessons on

developing a sales approach and emphasis was made on timely delivery. Money from the fruit sales supports funding for chapter activities such as the annual parent-member banquet, dues, and

leadership conference fees. Kennedy Steffes was top salesperson with total sales of $1,869, Maggie Melton was second with sales of $1,391, and Bianca Sponseller was third with sales of $1,389.

MLK: Stewart to be keynote speaker Continued from page 1

The program will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature readings on King’s civil rights accomplishments and life, a special musical performance, the Ames High Step Team and presentation of the Humanitarian Award. The keynote speaker will be Reginald C. Stewart, who serves as Iowa State University’s inaugural vice president for diversity and inclusion executive level diversity and inclusion strategist reporting directly to President Wendy Wintersteen. 2019 marked his 30th year as a staunch advocate for minority access and opportunity in U.S. higher education at both public and private institutions. Over the last three

decades, he has provided support and leadership for a broad spectrum of inclusion initiatives, promoting women and gender equity, LGBTQIA youth empowerment, accessibility services, and intercultural affairs. Stewart has received recognition from the U.S. Department of Education, the College Board, Excelencia in Education, the NAACP, the Ames Chamber of Commerce, and in 2019, Stewart was recognized with the Ames Humanitarian Award. Huxley man donates tractor to Nevada FFA Dennis Heinen, of Huxley, donated and delivered a John Deere model B tractor to Nevada High School FFA on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The tractor

is somewhat disassembled, but all the components are there. “The students have been enjoying the new project, trying to put everything back

together, and learning to chase threads, install gauges, and other skills,” said Kevin Cooper, Nevada High School agriculture education instructor

and FFA advisor. One interesting and rare part is an original aluminum John Deere muffl er cap, a part that alone is valued at more than $150.
