CALENDAR OF EVENTS JAN. 8 BURGER BASKET NIGHT American Legion Post 37 is hosting a $5 Burger Basket Night from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 225 Main St. in Ames. This event is open to the public. Enjoy a taste of summer with a flamebroiled burger with the freshest garden fare and fries for just $5. Add a cheese for just a little bit more.

BINGO NIGHT American Legion Post 37 will offer Bingo at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 225 Main St. in Ames. Event is open to the public. Play sheets of three, six or nine squares are available for $6, $12 and $18.

JAN. 9 NATURE AT NOON Bring your lunch to Nature at Noon at Reiman Gardens from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9. Hear about ISU Assistant Professor Dara Wald’s research on the role of trust and environmental values in public attitudes about complex and controversial science. No registration required. The event is free for members and ISU students, and free with admission for the public.

CRAFTY COCKTAIL NIGHT Join Reiman Gardens’ staff at the Gardens after hours for crafting and adult beverages from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9. Concoct a variety of scents and ingredients for customized gifts or treats for your own self-care. This program is BYOB – you may bring a beer, wine, or non-alcoholic beverage for yourself. Pre-registration with payment is required by Tuesday, Jan. 7, at www.reimangardens.com. The cost is $14 for members and ISU students, and $17.50 for the public. Must be at least 21 to attend.

JAN. 10 COMMON GROUND RECORDING SESSIONS Story County Conservation is joining a project of the Iowa Association of Naturalists inspired by the Storycorps project on National Public Radio. Naturalists and volunteers will record participants’ experiences, memories, and stories about their relationship with nature and the outdoors in Iowa from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Jan. 10, or from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Ames Public Library. There will be more times to participate in February and March. To reserve a 30-minute time slot, email rbeall@ storycountyiowa.gov. Drop-ins are also welcome, as time permits.

JAN. 11 VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PRESENTATION Anthony Rhoad, a sexual assault reponse offi cer, trainer in hand-to-hand defensive tactics, will lead a presentation on violence against women from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Simply Mae’s, 601 Broad St., in Story City. You will receive vital and relevant information from Rhoad, who has investigated assaults on women for nearly 20 years. Tickets are $10 per person. This presentation is recommended for children ages 14 and up unless accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased at the boutique or online at www.simplymaes.com. Brunch will be provided. MLK Day 2020 celebration to be on Jan. 20 at Ames Middle School The Martin Luther King Day Planning Committee invites all in Ames and Story County to honor and celebrate King’s birthday on Monday, Jan. 20. The theme

for this year’s celebration is Equality, Justice and Unity. The event will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Ames Middle School, 3915 Mortensen Road. MLK birthday cake will be

served from 6 to 6:30 p.m., with music provided by Ames High School Jazz Band I. There will be a welcome from the Story County Board of Supervisors, and Ames

Mayor John Haila. Meeker Elementary School students will sing “Martin Luther King” and other musical selections. See MLK on page 12

Placement auditions, open rehearsals for Ames Children’s Choirs Do you like to sing? Do you like to make music with friends? Placement auditions for the Spring Season of the Ames Children’s Choirs will be Jan. 6 through 20 in Ames. The program will be accepting singers ages seven through 18 into all four choirs at this time. Rehearsals resume on Jan. 13 and 14. All singers will participate in the Spring Concert on Saturday, May 16, in addition to other performance opportunities. Auditions for the 2020-21 season will be held for all four choirs in May and June. For the placement audition, singers may sing any song of choice but are welcome to audition without a prepared song. No previous experience or vocal training is required for participation in the choirs, only the ability to match pitch and maintain a melody. We are also look-

ing for singers who demonstrate the desire and commitment to participate in an excellent choral ensemble. A tuition fee will be assessed to cover the cost of facilities, instruction, music and administration.

Singers in central Iowa are also invited to visit the Ames Children’s Choirs during the month of January by attending open rehearsals at the Collegiate United Methodist Church Annex Auditorium, located at 130 S. Sheldon Ave.,
