Wheels for Work donates van to Ames family Wheels for Work, a partnership between Ames Ford Lincoln and United Way of Story County, works with local agencies to connect those in need of reliable and safe transportation to those who can give them just that. The Wheels for Work program recently donated a van to Adhaar Bol, an Ames mother of four children, coming to Iowa as a former refugee. The Ames Interfaith Refugee Alliance helped to connect Adhaar to local community services, in turn allowing her to apply for the Wheels for Work program. Ames Ford accepts donated vehicles into the program to be given a safety inspection and repaired to donate to a family in need of a vehicle. Giving a family a car makes child care, school, jobs, groceries and medical appointments easily accessible – things that are so easily taken advantage of by those who have never had to be without a vehicle.

Ames DMACC students work with French chefs DMACC Iowa Culinary InstituteÂŽ (ICIÂŽ) second-year student Lewis Peel, left, of Ames joins French Chef Sophie Rosnoblet in zesting limes for dessert floating islands to be served at an upcoming French gourmet dinner. Generally, two chefs from the St. Etienne region of France come to the DMACC Ankeny Campus every January as part of the annual French

Chefs exchange. Since this marks the 35th anniversary of the exchange, Rosnoblet and 19 other French chefs from Les Cuisiniers de la Loire, along with their spouses, are spending two weeks in Iowa, teaching French cuisine to the DMACC culinary students. Des Moines is a sister city to St. Etienne. As part of the exchange program, a group of eight ICIÂŽ students will travel to

France in May touring Michelin-starred restaurants and wineries for two weeks and then serving two-week internships in the kitchens of the French chefs. Peel, originally from Chapel Hill, N.C., is among the eight ICIÂŽ students going to France in May. The DMACC culinary students will help prepare three gourmet dinners under the tutelage of the world-renowned French chefs.

The 31st-annual Ames Town and Gown musicale set for Feb. 15 The 31st-annual Ames Town and Gown Musicale, a highly anticipated evening of sparkling entertainment and hospitality, will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, at St. Johns by the Campus Episcopal Church, 2338 Lincoln Way, Ames. This yearly fundraiser supports Town & Gown’s chamber music concerts and outreach programs that feature internationally renowned performers. The evening will begin with a collage of exciting performances bringing together musicians from both Iowa State University and the community at large, exemplifying the concept of “Town & Gown.” Afterwards, the audience and musicians will mingle over a sumptuous array of gourmet specialties in the elegant parish hall. A number of audience members have called the Town & Gown Musicale a “favorite night of the year,” an event that creates community and special connections through great music and wonderful food.

With this year’s musicale, Ames Town & Gown fondly remembers Suzanne (Suzy) Zaffarano, for her many years of friendship and generous support. Suzanne and her late husband, Dan Zaffarano, were among the very first supporters and organizers of Town & Gown since its founding in 1950, and the Zaffarano family connection has been continuous ever since. This year’s Musicale program will include 10 different performing ensembles giving of their time and talent: the Ames Piano Quartet (Boro Martinic, violin; Stephanie PriceWong, viola; George Work, cello, and MeiHsuan Huang, piano), the newly formed Roseman Quartet (Jonathan Sturm and Julie Fox Henson, violins; Nathalie Cruden, viola; and Julie Sturm, cello); oboist Amy Christensen, bassoonist Kevin Schilling, and pianist Nai-Ying Liao; clarinetist Jena Nahnsen, violist Jonathan Sturm, and pianist Paula Forrest; flutist Sonja Giles and bassoonist Kevin Judge; baritone Chad Sonka

with pianist Paula Forrest; clarinetist Jenny Maclay; and organist Miriam Zach with Amy Christensen on English horn. Young pianists, brother and sister Adam and Yuer Zhu, will also perform for piano-4-hands. Tickets are available online at www. amestownandgown. org, by phone from Leslie Kawaler at (515) 292-6060, and at the door. The cost is $50; student tickets are $15. All proceeds go toward programming of the Ames Town & Gown chamber music series. For more information, contact Paula For-
