Kids Run for Kids to add 5K Kids Run for Kids will offer a 5K run for the fi rst time in 2020. For the past five years the fundraiser, sponsored by Ames Morning Rotary, has offered course options from 1K to 4K. “There are lots of 11 and 12-year olds

who can run a 5K,” said Steve Kirts, this year’s race chairperson. “We wanted to expand the event for kids wanting to run a longer race. For a kid who comes back year after year, this lets them grow up with the race.”

Family-friendly activities such as crafts, mini-golf and the Bookmobile are part of the event held annually in Brookside Park in Ames. This year’s race will be on Saturday, April 25. Online registration is available.

Town and Country Kiwanis learns about bus transportation in Ames Barb Neal, director of Transit and Rich Learns, assistant director for fleet and facilities of the Ames Transit Agency (CyRide) recently visited the Town and Country Kiwanis Club describing bus transportation in Ames, Iowa to the members and guests of the club. The fi rst bus service in the Ames area was a horse-drawn bus prior to 1890 where the town of Ames was linked to surrounding communities and the

College. Since then, major changes have occurred with mass transportation to meet the transportation challenges of Iowa State University, city of Ames, Story County and the needs of their citizens. CyRide in Ames is currently third in the nation behind New York City and San Francisco in rides per capita making our system unique for cities the size of Ames. The use of technology including automated vehicle loca-

tion is available on “NEXT BUS”, where telephone, mobile device, or web enabled computer keeps riders informed of expected bus arrival at their stop. Riders should acquire the CyRide brochure “CyRide ROUTE MAPS, TIMETABLES AND RIDING INFORMATION” to understand and use the available transportation services. Nevada High School: ‘Iowa’s Largest Banana Plantation’ Nevada High School agriculture education and FFA has added bananas and pineapples to the greenhouse crops. In fact, Nevada High School now has more banana plants in production than anyone else in Iowa. Mark Hoffman, an ethno botanist who lives in Nevada, donated the plants in October. The plants have an

interesting growth, but are susceptible to mealy bugs and spider mites. A product called Avid was purchased to prevent spider mite reproduction, and malthion has been used to control the mealy bugs. “The leaves are quite large and absolutely magnificent,” said Kevin Cooper, Nevada High School agriculture education instructor and FFA advisor.

Golden K Kiwanis helps local food pantries put food on table Recent data shows 15 percent of all Story County families are experiencing food insecurity. Many local food pantries indicate the need is great and many are having shortages to keep up with the demand. The Nebraska-Iowa

Kiwanis District has set “alleviating childhood hunger” as a 2019-20 priority goal. Kiwanis Clubs in the district are encouraged to develop service projects to help fulfi ll this goal. In response, Ames Golden K devised a month-long project

in January to collect food items and solicit cash from its members titled “Helping Put Food on the Table.” A competition between two teams, Red and Gold, was designed to see which team could collect the most food items plus

cash donations. A club goal of 500 food items and $500 cash was set. During the month of January, 575 cans, bottles, jars, boxes and packages of food items and $1,575 were donated by Golden K members, far exceeding the

club’s goal. Members of the Red Team donated the most cash and the Gold Team collected the most food items. A celebration of the project’s success was held at Golden K’s Feb. 20 meeting with a presentation of food

items and cash divided equally between the Food at First, Mid Iowa Community Action (MICA) and Ames Bethesda Lutheran Food Pantries. For more information about Ames Golden K, please visit www.amesgoldenk. org.
