Josie Kelly holds two John Deere carburetors that her father purchased from Nevada FFA to use on her tractor projects. In back, Andy Kelly writes the check to the FFA for $200. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Thanks Dad, a pair of John Deere carburetors Josie Kelly and her father, Andy, stopped by the Nevada High School agriculture mechanics lab one evening. Mr. Kevin Cooper had just what they were looking for, a pair of rebuilt John Deere model A carbu-

retors. For her project, Josie is rebuilding and restoring her grandfather’s John Deere A tractor that he farmed with. Nevada High School has many tractors, and parts, and had the carburetors in inven-

tory. Andy Kelly wrote a generous check for $200 for the two carburetors. Both carburetors were rebuilt by the late Wilbert Hadley, a long time supporter and friend of the Nevada FFA.

Town and Country Kiwanis Club learns about U.S.-China trade war Wendong Zhang, of the Department of Economics of Iowa State University, recently visited the Town and Country Kiwanis Club, where he discussed the U.S.China trade war and Phase One Trade Deal. He described the near recent history of trade between the U.S. and China. He focused on Iowa’s contribution of soybeans and pork purchased by China. He was reminded that agricultural leaders from ISU have worked in China to improve its agricultural production prior to the current situation.

The trade war between the U.S. and China began in April 2018. Negotiations have resulted in the development of Phase One Trade Deal. While at impasse, China has strengthened its food purchasing ties to countries in Europe and South America. Phase One could raise the purchases from the U.S. low of $10 billion per year to $55 billion in 2025. Soybeans and pork are the major commodities of trade of interest to the state of Iowa. Iowa is blessed

with a relatively large amount of food and fiber producing soil. Iowa food production needs trade with other countries to be profitable. China’s large population and relatively less suitable food producing soil is a natural trade partner with Iowa. Zhang’s work can be found by visiting “www.iastste.edu/ farmland”. He also recommended additional reading with two books: “Destined by War,” by Graham Allison, and “How China became Capitalist”, by Coase and Wang.

PEOPLE Chad Hart, faculty member of the Department of Economics, Iowa State University recently visited the Town and Country Kiwanis Club to discuss Iowa’s agricultural market outlook. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Hart speaks to Town and Country Kiwanis Chad Hart, faculty member of the Department of Economics, Iowa State University recently visited the Town and Country Kiwanis Club discussing the topic of Iowa’s agricultural market outlook with the members and guests of the club. Hart provided his audience with basic information about supply and demand specifically as it relates to Iowa’s corn and soybeans. He also discussed several external factors affecting the normal markets for these commodities. Some of the factors discussed were: World Trade specifically between U.S. and China: Climate Change: Probable Worldwide Coronavirus epidemic; Diminishing Soil Quality; and Need for an Alternate Cash Crop. Some comments regarding them: Our

producers need access to World Markets to remain economically viable. Iowa is expected to become warmer and dryer affecting the culture of corn and soybeans. The present world virus emergency is negatively affecting all world transportation and trade. The soil quality has diminished resulting in lower quality commodities. Commercial Hemp was discussed as an ideal alternative crop for Iowa. A number of different products can be manufactured from hemp including: rope, shoes, clothes, soap, fuel and others. Commercial hemp in Iowa will require product research and a presently not available manufacturing infrastructure including major revisions of federal and Iowa laws and regulations.

Roland-Story food science students prepare their ice cream products and test the various concentrations of sugar with ice tea. CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS

R-S food science class experiments with food labs Roland-Story food science students were recently involved in two different labs. Lowering the freezing point of cream and

testing the molarity of ice tea. Students experimented with different concentrations and different types

of salts to help lower the freezing point of cream in order to make it into ice cream. In their second lab,

Nevada ag mechanics learning to weld Nevada High School agriculture mechanics students have learned to weld and enjoy some new equipment courtesy of Perkins IV

CTE funding. Several new welding helmets were purchased and 16 welding jackets to make sure students were

fully protected from harmful arc lights, and the jackets are flame retardant and protect the skin from the bright light emitted during welding. The helmets can also be left on for grinding as they have adjustable lens fi ltering capability.

the students experimented with different molarities (concentrations) of sugar with unsweetened ice teas.

According to Brad Taylor, Roland-Story agriculture instructor, “Both labs were designed to have the students make deci-

sions and problem solve in order to solve some typical problems that are faced in the development of new food products.”

receives a Tapestry Award presented by DMACC Boone Campus Provost Dr. Drew Nelson. The Tapestry Award is presented by the DMACC Diversity Commission to recognize individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity through their individual character, contributions to the college and service to the community. Taylor has served two stints in overseas deployment in the military. After returning from service, he

nominated DMACC to receive the prestigious, “Veteran Friendly Employer” award. He organizes the annual 22 push-up challenge as a means to call attention to the number of veterans committing suicide each year. He also organizes the annual 5K “In My Boots” Ruck Run held in Boone every April. Taylor also volunteers as a YSS mentor, travels and volunteers as a participant of the Nauvoo Pageant, and makes presentations at area career fairs.
