Story Theater Company presents its inaugural 10 Minute Play Festival Story Theater Company will present its inaugural 10 Minute Play Festival at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 6, and Saturday, July 7, at Story Theater Company black box theater, 615 S. Dayton Ave., Suite 133, Ames. Come see the world premiere of six plays written and directed by area teens. Advance tickets are $7 and can be purchased through the STC website (www. storytheatercompany. org) through July 5. Tickets at the door, if available, will be $10 for adults and $7 for children, students and seniors. The 10 Minute Play Festival is an exciting new venture for STC, which began with a call for submissions of original plays. The six playwrights whose work was chosen attended workshops to hone their writing. Then the process began to assign directors and hold auditions for actors. All actors, directors and writers for this festival are 14 to 18 years old. Ben Sulzberger and Lena Menefee-Cook, former STC actors, are festival co-directors. Sulzberger launched this ambitious idea, something more common in university theater departments. “It’s a unique idea for this age group, especially for the kids to do it all,” he explained. Victoriah Nelson’s play is titled “A New Kind of Normal,” which is directed by Morgan Reetz. Zander Reed wrote “MFSTO -or - “The Choice to Err” and has Joshua Gartin as director and Naomi White as assistant director. “Booked” is Carly Breen’s play, directed by Andrew Lindsay. Ben

Siegel’s play is titled “Paper Swans,” and is directed by Franny Burke-Vens. “One Foot Out the Door” was written by Asher Suski and directed by Zander Reed. Finally, Morgan Reetz wrote “The Scarf,” with Ben Sulzberger as director. Asher Suski spoke about the inspiration for his play. “One Foot Out the Door” is based on a script I wrote a year ago,” he said. “I kept the basics of the characters and conflict, and worked to revamp it through this workshop.” Suski expressed how interesting it’s been to watch how a director and actors take a story

and work with it. “Some of the interpretations have been surprising to me, but not in a bad way,” he said. Morgan Reetz also spoke about the inspiration for her play. “I was involved in a play last February about the Holocaust, so my inspiration for ‘The Scarf’ came from that,” she said. Reetz spoke about the process of watching her own writing come to life through choices made by directors and actors. “Even the way that an actor chooses to say a line is interesting, and sometimes unexpected, from the way I imagined it.”

Lauryn Berger is taking on the role of Avery in Nelson’s play “A New Kind of Normal.” She mentioned the job of acting in a peer’s play is fun and challenging. “You have the job of interpreting something brand new,” she said. Madison DeLashmutt is taking on two roles in the festival. She plays Aunt Kim in Nelson’s play and Elaine in Siegel’s “Paper Swans.” She spoke about how a new play can change, from the writer’s intention to the director’s vision. “It’s exciting to be part of this,” she said. Story Theater Company is a nonprofit children’s theater dedicated to providing performance and educational opportunities for the children of Ames and surrounding communities. Since our formation in 2006, we have performed to more than 30,000 audience members who come from throughout central Iowa to experience quality children’s theater. Nevada FFA chapter attends National FFA Washington Leadership Conference Nevada High School FFA Chapter had six students travel to and participate in the National FFA Washington, D.C., Leadership Conference. The Nevada students who attended included Kaitlin Wegner, Madison Davis, Madison Fitz, Aidan Sellberg, Lucas Rogers and Avery Mather. The 2018 Washington Leadership Conference was held June 12 to 16. “The conference was inspirational and was an eye opening experience for me,” said Kaitlin Wegner, Nevada FFA member and WLC participant. Educational sessions focused on citizenship, purpose, diversity, advocacy and how to serve others. Students experienced national monuments, Arlington Cemetery and the Smithsonian museums. Legislative visits included senators Joni Ernst and Charles Grassley. The cost of the trip was $1,280 per student. The Nevada FFA Chapter funded $1,005 per participant with the students providing $275 of the conference cost. “We think it is important to provide funding for students to develop premiere leadership development, and the Washington, D.C., Conference is an excellent program,” said Kevin Cooper, Nevada FFA advisor. “Investing money in quality student leadership education is always a good investment.” The annual conference focuses on leadership development, personal growth and community service. More than 2,200 students - up to 340 a week - from throughout the U.S. who are FFA members will attend one of the conference’s seven weeklong sessions in

June and July. “Students come to the Washington Leadership Conference wanting to make a difference. They leave knowing they can– and will,” said Dwight Armstrong, CEO of the National FFA Organization. “I believe students are generally aware of global problems like hunger and poverty but many are sheltered and disconnected from what’s happening in the world. During their time in Washington, FFA members experience real-world problems and take critical steps toward personal growth and developing leadership skills they’ll need to make a difference in people’s lives, starting in their own communities.” Created in 1969 and held annually in Washington, D.C., the conference helps students develop lead-

ership skills, identify personal strengths, develop awareness of societal differences and human needs and strategize how they can help others through community service. The conclusion of each weekly session of the Washington Leadership Conference is a civic engagement activity where participants apply what they have learned at the conference to a real, handson service activity. In a partnership with Meals of Hope students will be packing approximately 60,000 highly palatable meals that will be delivered directly to the food insecure of Washington, D.C. Students will be packing both an oatmeal apple cinnamon mix, as well as fortified macaroni and cheese. The 2018 National FFA Organization’s

Washington Leadership Conference is sponsored through the National FFA Foundation by title sponsors Monsanto, CSX and Farm Credit. For more, visit www.FFA.org. This year, students will volunteer more than 9,500 hours to pack and ship thousands of meals for Food for Hope to help the third-world country battle hunger. “Monsanto’s support of the Washington Leadership Conference reflects our sole focus on agriculture and commitment to American farm families,” said John Raines, lead of customer advocacy at Monsanto.

“Monsanto has a long tradition of supporting agriculture youth through scholarships, education and leadership development programs. We are enthused to support FFA members dedicated to developing the leadership skills they’ll need to achieve success and personal fulfi llment.” “CSX is proud to support the participation of FFA members in this life-changing leadership development conference,” said Tori Kaplan, AVP, CSX Corporate Social Responsibility. “The Washington Leadership Conference is an awesome opportunity for students to learn

how to become a visionary and develop their decision-making and goal-setting skills while expanding their understanding of agribusiness and participating in community service. The experience and skills that students will learn will stay with them for a lifetime.” The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 540,379 student members in grades seven through 12 who belong to one of 7,489 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Nevada FFA student movers haul grand piano, appliances When Ames resident Michael Ching and contractor Larry Joel needed a grand piano moved, they contacted Nevada FFA advisor Kevin Cooper to see if the “FFA student movers” would take on the challenge. “We had never moved a horizontal grand piano, but had moved two upright grand pianos, so we knew it would be heavy,” Cooper said. On a Saturday, Cooper and an entourage of student volunteers and a parent headed to just west of Jack Trice Stadium to get the piano moved. First, the legs were removed, and the piano was turned vertical and strapped to a freight cart with a load binder. The floor covering was put down on the hardwood floor hallway to avoid mark-

The piano was transported to 4269 Cameron School road and unloaded. On a Thursday, Bill and Laurie Tufford needed a television console moved from their home’s basement on Lake Shore Drive in Nevada. Kaitilin Wegner, along with Mr. Cooper, and
