Story County food pantries receive 192 pork loins and 3,840 servings of pork The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation/ Iowa Select Farms was in the area recently, delivering pork loins and Henry’s Heroes packs to the Nevada Community Cupboard, Cambridge Food Pantry and Huxley Food Pantry. The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation kicked off its annual effort to Haul Out Hunger across rural Iowa. Iowa Select Farms employees delivered 60,000 pounds of fresh, boneless pork loins to 120 rural food pantries. The Nevada Community Cupboard, Cambridge Food Pantry and Huxley/ Kelley Food Pantry received 192 pork loins — enough to provide 3,840, 4-ounce serv-

ings of pork. Along with the fresh protein, a new foundation program called Henry’s Heroes brought basic child-

hood needs to the food pantries. “The unfortunate reality is that too many Iowans are in need, especially during the

summer months. We hope the pork loins and supplies from Henry’s Heroes will bring some,” said Jeff Hansen, president and

CEO of Iowa Select Farms and co-founder of the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation. “As farmers, we passionately believe in giving back to the communities where our employees and contractors live and work.” Henry’s Heroes Program brings children’s personal care items to hospitals, food pantries and women and children’s shelters. The program was inspired by Henry Johnson, Jeff and Deb Hansen’s grandchild and the son of Natalie and Jake Johnson. Natalie had the vision for Henry’s Heroes after she and Jake organized a donation of Henry’s baby shower items to Blank Children’s Hospital.

“We have all witnessed the pain in our world for the lack of even the most basic needs to raise a child, even in our own communities,” Natalie said. “From basics like bottles and diapers to more fun items like books, toys, and the cutest clothes, Henry’s Heroes brings joy to children and their caretakers when they are in most need.” Debbie Tillman, food pantry coordinator at the Lenox Neighborhood Center in Lenox, said families in need struggle to secure necessities. “A lot of the essential items infants and children need may not be covered by food stamps or government nutritional programs,” Tillman said.

Story Theater Company presents Ten-Minute Play Festival Come see the world premiere of plays written and directed by area teens with Story Theater Company’s Ten-Minute Play Festival on July 13 and 14. This year’s festival also features two additional plays written by the playwriting workshop instructors and directed by the directing workshop instructors. The Ten-Minute Play Festival began with a call for submissions of original plays. The four playwrights whose work was chosen attended workshops to hone their writing. Then the process began to assign directors, who also attend workshops to learn about directing, and hold auditions for actors. All actors, directors, and writers for this festival are from 9 to 18 years old. Josh Oren and Olivia Griffith instructed the playwriting workshops, while Griffith and Amanda Gray taught the directing workshops. Nancy Evans

served as the festival producer. “This is a very unique outlet kids don’t get anywhere else,” says Zander Reed, a junior at Boone High School who is directing “Reflections” and wrote “Patients (or The Risks One Takes in Confidence).” “We aren’t often given technical outlets, especially writing and directing, so this is a very unique opportunity that I had a lot of fun doing.” For some directors, like Anika Slowing, a senior at Ames High School, who also wrote “Reflections,” this is her first opportunity with the technical side of theater. “I’ve always acted,” Slowing said, “but never directed, so I know how actors feel and I’ve tried to tap into that. This has been a fun challenge bringing the writer’s vision to life.” Plays being presented are: “Within Minutes” written by Asher Suski and directed by Anika

Slowing. “Reflections” by Anika Slowing and directed by Zander Reed. “Patients (or The Risks One Takes in Confidence) written by Zander Reed and directed by Morgan Reetz. “Cilantro is the Mark of Death” by Ember Biggs and directed by Josh Gartin. “Here Be the Monstrous” written by Josh Oren and directed by Olivia Griffith. “Pool Party” by Olivia Griffith and directed by Amanda Gray. Ten-Minute Play Festival will be at 7 p.m. on July 13 and 2 p.m. on July 14 at the Story Theater Company black box theater, 615 S.Dayton Ave., Suite 133, in Ames. Free-will admission is accepted. The three plays prior to intermission are appropriate for children and adults of all ages, while the plays after intermission are better suited for teens and adults. Audience members are free to leave at intermission.
