Roland-Story leaders attend district conference Kat Hawley and Maddy Stevenson represented RolandStory FFA during the district Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT) Conference at Ellsworth Community College. While at Ellsworth Community College on Friday FFA leaders received training relative to their specific offi cer duties within the local chapter. After offi cers attended four workshops focused on serving. Whether that was serving other offi cers, the chapter, or the community.

Officers collaborated about different events to do as a chapter. Another workshop emphasized on how to go about different scenarios that could happen to their offi cer group. They also learned the importance of staying up to date with current events within agriculture. COLT conference programming is designed as a twoyear rotation of local leaders training. Next years focus will be: advocacy in agriculture, connecting with stake-

holders, recruiting, and team dynamics. The goal of COLT is to engage FFA members in learning about the tools that would allow them to be successful in anything they are part of through high school and beyond.

Roland-Story agriculture student and FFA member, Jackson Sterle, has been busy this summer preparing for the 2018 Story County and Iowa State Fair. Jackson is the son of Stephen and Jodi Sterle, of Roland, and will be a sophomore this year at RolandStory. His SAE (supervised agriculture experience) project is with swine production. According to Brad Taylor, Roland-Story agriculture education instructor and FFA

advisor, “Jackson is an excellent student and a natural born leader. He possesses lots of common sense and is a student that is looked up to in our Agriculture program.” Jackson has participated in many events and activities over his fi rst year in the program including being elected as a chapter offi cer, participating in the local second-grade program on “Food for America, was a member of the poultry judging contest,” was a member of the

“agronomy contest,” attended national and state FFA conventions and competed in leadership contests at the state FFA convention. Jackson is currently serving his FFA chapter as Sentinel. Taylor says, “Jackson is an excellent representative of his chapter, school, community and family. He constantly demonstrates honesty, integrity, appropriate work ethic and dedication at all times. His actions speak highly of his character.”

FFA chapter for the purposes of farming. “This is a great opportunity for our students and chapter,” said Kevin Cooper, Nevada High School agriculture education teacher and FFA advisor. The parcel of land is adjacent to current FFA test plot fields provided by the Iowa DOT, and Heartland Cooperative. Students were directly involved in

drafting the lease language, networking seed procurement and herbicide selection, cleaning up field debris and developing a cash-flow projection. The students were enlightened to find they could add the planned soybean crop to their current crop insurance policy and will be able to use APH (average production history) yields to establish revenue assurance or yield loss. John Finneseth, of Heartland Cooperative, agreed to donate all of the seed beans, herbicide and provide season-long monitoring of crop conditions utilizing satellite imagery that will be available to students. Students worked on Monday, May 28, picking up rocks, trash and other field debris as agreed upon with language in the lease with Flummerfelt. The field was planted on Tuesday, June 5, with Mike Wright providing a planter and tractor. Several students volunteered with filling the planter boxes with several different soybean varieties. The land parcel is around 13 acres, and will be measured with GIS/GPS technology.
