STORY COUNTY SUN CALL 233-3299 TO ADVERTISE
A pickup box load of sweet corn that was harvested at Jensen Farms of Ankeny was distributed in several directions on Sunday, July 16. Kevin Cooper, Nevada High School agriculture education instructor and FFA advisor, traveled to Jensen Farms of Ankeny on Saturday, July 15. “We fi nished working on tractors at the high school around 3:30 p.m., so there was plenty of daylight left for picking sweet corn,” Cooper said. Upon arriving at Jensen Farms, a modified loader bucket was mounted on the front of a John Deere tractor and then driven directly into the field so picked
corn can be harvested efficiently. After the bucket is full, it is emptied into a wagon or truck. Cooper filled his pickup and headed for Nevada. Most of the load went to the Nevada School lunch room storage area to be utilized in the summer program lunch in Nevada. Cooper then delivered corn to elderly residential facilities in Nevada. Two students set up a sales stand in Nevada, and several school employees purchased sweet corn for $4 per dozen at the high school. “It was the best sweet corn we ever had,” said Connie Burnett, of Nevada.
Nevada children enjoyed fresh sweet corn for lunch. Kevin Cooper delivered the sweet corn donated by Jensen Farms of Ankeny.CONTRIBUTED PHOTO
