Vic Moss retires after 29 years of service to the homeless

Vic Moss has been director of the Emergency Residence Project (ERP) — aka “The Shelter” — in Ames for 29 years. He retired from that position on Aug. 4. The ERP Board of Directors is sponsoring a reception to thank Vic for his faithful service to the homeless. The reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, at Depot Deli, 526 Main St., in Ames. Please come and say thank you to Vic for his untiring mission to help the homeless. When Vic began as director, the shelter housed homeless men, women and families in its three available bedrooms. At that time, the occupancy was about three to four people a night.

The shelter started in 1985 when a group of Story County individuals saw the need for emergency housing for homeless individuals. However, over the years, it has also become a homeless prevention provider by helping individuals and families avoid evictions and the loss of their heat and lights. In the past years, more families have arrived at the door of the shelter. At times, there have been up to 60 people a night. Vic specially enjoys serving the children that live in the apartments. In July 2016, there were 16 children that live in the apartments. Vic has welcomed all of the families and has looked after as many of their needs as was possible.

In 1992, a house, just south of the original shelter, was purchased for transitional housing families. It has two apartments. In 1999, a four-plex was constructed by ISU students and community individuals. It is next door to and north of the original shelter. It was constructed to house Transitional Housing families. In 2015, that four-plex was renovated with the help and supervision of Deacon Alan Christy with funding from St. Cecilia Parish and other Ames churches. There are also two transitional housing apartments located in the basement of the original Shelter. See MOSS on page 5

a better understanding as they learn about an older generation. This is one of the most rewarding and fun experiences — the kids are great. We even have a party with the students at the end of the school year. For more information, call Tom (515) 292-8890.

Story County Medical Center Story County Medical is expanding and so are the volunteer opportunities there. Help at the Gift Shop from noon to 3:30 p.m. on

clearance check completed. A commitment of three to four hours a week is expected. To take part in this project, please call Teal at (515) 292-8890.

Food at First Join a great group of individuals who help serve daily meals. FAF’s central focus is to help those who are not able to meet their basic need of food. Iowa Radio Reading Information Service (IRIS) IRIS is an excellent program offered to people who are visually-impaired or unable to physically hold and read a newspaper. Each day, volunteers read aloud and record the Ames Tribune. The recording is then sent by computer to Des Moines where it is broadcasted on a special radio frequency later that day. People who use this service are given a certain radio to pick up this frequency so they are able to hear the daily local news. Volunteers are needed to be readers for this! If you enjoy reading the newspaper, why

not read aloud so others can enjoy it, too? A minimum commitment of one day per month is required of all volunteers. Please call Tom today at (515) 292-8890 to become a part of this program. Orientation Orientation for new or potential volunteers will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, in the RSVP office at 110 Crystal St. Call (515) 292-8890 for information. PEOPLE

Motorcycle riders making a difference for Parkinson’s research Shake, Rattle & Roll has become an annual fundraiser that many motorcycle riders and non-riders alike will attend to help raise money. Lost Cause is a motorcycle rider’s group in central Iowa. Like many, the members of Lost Cause didn’t know much about Parkinson’s until their fellow member, Chad Pierson, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006 at age 37. A couple of years after

his diagnosis, the group suggested a fundraiser to help Chad, better known as “Beads,” and his wife, Kristen (“Teen”), with finances while they traveled to Mayo Clinic for Chad to have the deep brain stimulation procedure performed. Chad didn’t think he “needed” a fundraiser since there are so many others who are worse off than himself. The Lost Cause group decided

to organize a fundraiser to help all people suffering from Parkinson’s. This year’s Shake, Rattle & Roll will be on Saturday, Aug. 27. There will be a motorcycle ride which will start at the Moose Lodge in Iowa Falls at noon. Registration will be from 11 a.m. to noon and there will be a $5 cost for the ride. The ride will include stops in Owasa (3 day) and Hubbard (The Hubb) and end in Story City at Carousel Lanes. Non-riders are welcome to attend at 4:30 p.m. at Carousel Lanes in Story City. There will be food, a live auction and live music, featuring the bands Dr. Ink of Nevada, at 4:30 p.m. and Gauntlet of Des Moines at approximately 7 p.m.
