Mary Kay Abbott celebrates 40-year journey of service Altrusa International of Ames, Inc. was honored to celebrate and recognize Mary Kay Abbott’s 40 years of Altrusa membership and 40 years of service. Mary Kay, retired owner of Mary Kay’s Flowers and Gifts joined Altrusa International of Ames, Inc. in July 1976. She is passionate about Altrusa and life. Mary Kay has a gracious, welcoming style that has contributed many years on the membership committee as well as holding offices such as president, secretary and treasurer. She has chaired and served

on service, ways & means, program, friendship and literacy committees as well as district nominating committees. In addition to touching and influencing the operations and growth of Altrusa Mary Kay touches the community through service projects including the City Garden, Casino Night, Home Holiday Tour and Steppin’ Out Style Show. In addition to growing plants and gardens, Mary Kay was recognized for growing her own, Altrusans that is. Daughter, Melanie Cornwell and

granddaughter Danielle Linder are very involved in the Ames chapter; granddaughters Natalie and Abby were ASTRAs at Ames High School, and Natalie has served as president of the Iowa City Altrusa Club. Mary Kay, an Iowa State University graduate, was recognized for her community involvement with ACTORS, St. John’s Episcopal Church and Ames Chamber of Commerce, being a mentor and inspiration to other Altrusans, a lady who has led her family to all be better people. Mary Clare Lokken

shared on behalf of the club that “Mary Kay is someone we can count on to be the voice of gentle prodding encouraging us to be our best selves in Altrusa and our lives.” Mary Kay, thank you for your integrity, genuineness, friendship, leadership, and guidance for the past 40 years, and all the years to come. You make a difference not just to the Altrusa International of Ames club but more importantly to the community. More photos, see page 4.

Honorees recognized at ACTORS annual meeting The Ames Community Theater (ACTORS) held its annual meeting on July 16. During the

dinner-meeting at The Hilton Garden Inn, President Lynn McElrath reported on the results and

accomplishments of the sixtieth season, and board members were elected. The shows of the last

season were celebrated, and previews of shows coming in season 61 were shared. Roger and Kay Berger were honored as this year’s Lifetime Friend of ACTORS. The Lifetime Friend of ACTORS can be given annually to ACTORS members that have demonstrated years of support to the theater. Roger and Kay have been loyal audience members for many years.

In addition, both Kay and Roger have been in many shows, and Roger is a past president. They continue to support ACTORS in and around the community. As a past recipient of the Lifetime Friend of ACTORS Award, Carole Horowitz honored Roger and Kay and presented them with the award. Mike and Marla Miller were recognized as this year’s Friend of ACTORS. The Friend of ACTORS award is given to

community members that have given outstanding support to ACTORS. Gallery 319, owned by Mike and Marla, served as the ACTORS ticket outlet for many years. In addition, Gallery 319 framed the show posters for every show. You can see ACTORS past seasons around the ACTORS Studio. Furthermore, Mike and Marla have directed and appeared in several shows. Lynn McElrath presented them with the award.

P.E.O. Chapter KC’s Book Club 2 monthly meeting P.E.O. Chapter KC’s Book Club 2 met for its monthly gathering in Augustm and the members were surprised by each receiving a brand new book. Member Ingrid Place had entered a book contest for book clubs and was the winner of the new book, “The Secrets of Flight,” by

Maggie Leffler, for each member of the group. Book Club 2 has been meeting monthly to discuss books since August 2004. P.E.O. is a philanthropic educational organization where women celebrate the advancement of women, educate women through scholarships, grants,

awards, loans and stewardship of Cottey College, and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations. P.E.O. was founded on Jan. 21, 1869, by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant.

Roland-Story FFA members compete in State Fair shows The Roland-Story FFA chapter had 35 different members participate in a variety of activities this year at the Iowa State Fair. Members who participated in swine shows included Matthew Hougland, Paige Petzenhauser, Jackson Sterle, Josh Holmes, Claire Petzenhauser, Tyler Hougland and Jacob Sterle. Members did well in their respective shows with Roland-Story finishing as the sixth-place FFA chapter

in breeding swine and eighth-place FFA chapter in market swine. Roland-Story also had members compete in the Horticulture shows with Allison Wuebker placing second with her eggplant entry and third place with her zucchini. Brendan Taylor finished third with his yellow beans and third with his eggplant and Zachary Taylor finished

first with his eggplant and was named “State Fair Table Vegetable Champion.” Roland-Story finished as the ninth-place chapter in the horticultural division. Twenty-two members displayed photos through the FFA with several earning blue ribbon placings, and another 12 members participated in the agricultural demonstrations competitions.

SCARC: The next regular Story County Amateur Radio Club meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1, in Conference Room North A-B, Mary Greeley Medical Center. It’s the annual “show-and-tell” program where members will share new gear, hamfest finds, or interesting radio-related activities. The closest parking is in the lot north of the ER and ambulance garage. Enter through the north door where MGMC meets McFarland Clinic. Book Club: The Social/ Political Issues Book Club will meet at 6:45 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 1, at Ames Public Library. The book to be reviewed is ‘This Changes Everything’ by Naomi Klein regarding the effects of climate change in our world. Questions? In July, Troop 196 of Ames had 17 members attend the Boy Scouts of America Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The crew departed from Des Moines on July 16 with the Mid-Iowa Council Contingent and returned to Des Moines on July 30. Philmont Scout Ranch is located near Cimarron, N.M. in the Sangre de Cristo Range of the Rocky Mountains. While at the ranch the scouts hiked for 81 miles in rugged wilderness camping at a different campsite every night. All camps were at elevation of 7,000 feet and higher and the crews summited Baldy Mountain at elevation of 12,441 feet. All of the crews gear and food was carried in backpacks that weighed up to 45 pounds by the scouts. Fifty-three Nevada FFA members participate at Iowa State Fair Fifty-three Nevada agriculture education students and FFA members participated in the Iowa State Fair. Ten Nevada FFA members exhibited ag mechanics projects, 10 students in horticulture, crops and livestock, 34 students volunteered to work at the pork stand, and three students spent the entire fair working at the

grandstand and assisting at the Bill Riley stage. “Upon reflecting on our state fair activities, hats off to our students for their work ethic, perseverance, positive behavior, and spirited attitude,” said Kevin Cooper, Nevada ag instructor and FFA advisor.

Thirty-four Nevada ag students and FFA members volunteered on Sunday, Aug. 14, to work a shift at the Iowa Pork Tent. This was the 15th year of Nevada FFA dedicating a day of service at the state fair. Other years included working at Little Hands on the Farm, and working the Beef Quarters.
