Based on the book by Lois Lowry, “Gooney Bird Greene and Her True-Life Adventures is set in a fifthgrade classroom in the town of Watertower, where the children are not excited to be back in school. Suddenly, the classroom door bursts open and the colorful and fun Gooney Bird appears, and helps awaken her
new friends’ imaginations. The cast includes 20 adolescents, ages 9 to 14, from Ames and the surrounding communities. Behind the scenes are six additional young people, ages 12 to 17, who handle props, lighting, sound, and costumes. The cast and crew are supported by a seven-person staff
of adults who help transform this young talent into a professional performance. Amelia Yoder plays Mrs. Pidgeon in her very first role with Story Theater Company. Nate VanDyk is a veteran of several STC plays. Madelin Dooley brings enthusiasm to the stage and is making her debut with Story Theater Com-
pany as Gooney Bird Greene. The director is Julia VanDyk, an STC alum and a recent graduate of Northwestern College. Amdahl speaks at Sons of Norway September event Sons of Norway Kong Sverre Lodge held its September event in Story City with the program “St. Olav and his Cathedral Nidaros” presented by David Amdahl, of Decorah.
David spoke about Nidaros, the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world and Northern Europe’s most important pilgrimage site for Christians during the Middle Ages.
Nidaros Cathedral was built beginning in 1070 to memorialize the burial place of Olav II of Norway. The Viking chieftain Olav Haraldsson was born in 995 and went on to become a king and finally a saint, who was killed in 1030 in the Battle of Stiklestad and canonized as Saint Olav. Today, Nidaros Cathedral is a parish church of the Lutheran Church of Norway. Sons of Norway Events are open to all interested in learning more about Scandinavian heritage and culture and guests are always welcome.
