FALL FUN IN COLO Colo Public Library and Colo Community Center, 309 Main St., will have a book, bake, and craft sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. The book sale will include puzzles, games, DVDs, VHS and magazines, all under $1. Everything is free from 2 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 2. There will also be a Colo-NESCO apparel swap for gently used Colo-NESCO apparel.
THE ADVENTURES OF RIKKI-TIKKI-TAVI The Story Theater Company will present “The Adventures of Rikki-TikkiTavi,” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, at Ames City Auditorium, 520 Sixth St. From the world that brought “The Jungle Book,” this play features colorful characters and rich storytelling. Two Troop 140 Scouts earn Eagle Scout rank William Brumm and Peter Jaynes, of Troop 140, received the Boy Scouts of America’s highest award of Eagle Scout at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Oct. 12, 2019, at Ames Public Library. Peter completed all the requirements for the rank of Eagle in February 2019. For his Eagle service project, he directed the construction and placement of stands to clean boots and shoes to limit the spread of invasive species at the Jennett Heritage Area south of Nevada. He is a first-year student at Iowa State University in pre-architecture and a member of the ISU Varsity Football Marching Band. He is the son of Margaret and Dan Jaynes, of Ames William completed all the requirements for the rank of Eagle in August 2019. For his Eagle service project, he organized the planting of native flowering plants among native grasses between St. Thomas Aquinas Church and Memorial

Lutheran Church in Ames. He is a first-year student at Iowa State University majoring in materials engineering and a member of the ISU Varsity Football Marching Band. He is the son of Heather and Tom Brumm, of Ames. Both young men began their scouting careers in 2008 as Wolf Scouts in Cub Scout Pack 275 where they earned Arrow of Light.
They joined Troop 140 in 2012. During their years as Boy Scouts, Peter and William participated in numerous service activities, campouts, summer camps and High Adventure trips. They both served in multiple leadership roles within the troop, including Senior Patrol Leader. Since turning 18, William serves as an
assistant scoutmaster in Troop 140. Troop 140 has been operating continuously since 1986 and is chartered by Bethesda Lutheran Church. Since 1986, 89 boys from Troop 140 have achieved the rank of Eagle, more than 15 percent of troop members. Nationally, less than 6 perecnt of Boy Scouts earn the rank of Eagle.

The scheduled Saturdays are Nov. 2, Nov. 9. Nov. 16, and Nov. 30 at 400 Freel Drive, in Ames. Drivers can enter the site from Dayton Avenue, then west on Southeast Fifth Street a nd north on Freel Drive.

The Town and Country Kiwanis Club recently adopted Raising Readers in Story County as a “signature project.” Leo Timms and Dan Franklin described the project to club members at a recent meeting. Stan Carpenter also assisted in advocating for the project. The club has supported Raising Readers with children books for all ages. The club also will be supporting the efforts of Raising Readers to expand Little Free Libraries throughout Ames and all communities in the county. The members believe Raising Readers books in the hands of all children will help enable our children to be better informed citizensm improving their lives as they grow and work in his more complicated world. The Kiwanis International Members are “.. dedicated to improving the lives of children one community at a time…”.
