Two Troop 140 Scouts earn Eagle Scout rank William Brumm and Peter Jaynes, of Troop 140, received the Boy Scouts of America’s highest award of Eagle Scout at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Oct. 12, 2019, at Ames Public Library. Peter completed all the requirements for the rank of Eagle in February 2019. For his Eagle service project, he directed the construction and placement of stands to clean boots and shoes to limit the spread of invasive species at the Jennett Heritage Area south of Nevada. He is a first-year student at Iowa State University in pre-architecture and a member of the ISU Varsity Football Marching Band. He is the son of Margaret and Dan Jaynes, of Ames William completed all the requirements for the rank of Eagle in August 2019. For his Eagle service project, he organized the planting of native flowering plants among native grasses between St. Thomas Aquinas Church and Memorial

Lutheran Church in Ames. He is a first-year student at Iowa State University majoring in materials engineering and a member of the ISU Varsity Football Marching Band. He is the son of Heather and Tom Brumm, of Ames. Both young men began their scouting careers in 2008 as Wolf Scouts in Cub Scout Pack 275 where they earned Arrow of Light.

They joined Troop 140 in 2012. During their years as Boy Scouts, Peter and William participated in numerous service activities, campouts, summer camps and High Adventure trips. They both served in multiple leadership roles within the troop, including Senior Patrol Leader. Since turning 18, William serves as an

assistant scoutmaster in Troop 140. Troop 140 has been operating continuously since 1986 and is chartered by Bethesda Lutheran Church. Since 1986, 89 boys from Troop 140 have achieved the rank of Eagle, more than 15 percent of troop members. Nationally, less than 6 perecnt of Boy Scouts earn the rank of Eagle.

The Town and Country Kiwanis Club recently adopted Raising Readers in Story County as a “signature project.” Leo Timms and Dan Franklin described the project to club members at a recent meeting. Stan Carpenter also assisted in advocating for the project. The club has supported Raising Readers with children books for all ages. The club also will be supporting the efforts of Raising Readers to expand Little Free Libraries throughout Ames and all communities in the county. The members believe Raising Readers books in the hands of all children will help enable our children to be better informed citizensm improving their lives as they grow and work in his more complicated world. Ames family donates boat, Jet Ski to Nevada FFA Jerry and Colleen Gardner, and their son, Brian, of Ames, donated a Nitro NX 750 boat, including the 90 horsepower Mercury outboard engine, and new trailer to the Nevada FFA on Thursday, Oct. 3. In addition, the Gardner family donated a Yamaha WaveRunner Model VX 110 jet ski & trailer to Nevada FFA. Colleen Gardner contacted Kevin Cooper, Nevada High School agriculture education teacher and FFA advisor on Friday, Sept. 27 and said her family enjoys following the multitude of activities of the Nevada FFA. ably get the boat and jet ski tuned up and fully operational,” Colleen Gardner said. The Gardners would like to see the Nevada FFA sell the watercraft and use the money to continue and expand student education and leadership activities. On Thursday, Oct. 3, a small entourage of Nevada FFA members visited the Gardner residence and thanked them for the donation.

Later that day, both watercraft were delivered to Nevada High School. It did not take long for several ag mechanics students to start investigating the boat and jet ski. “New batteries in the boat were installed and it started right up” Cooper said. “This donation is very significant since the current value of the boat and jet ski may surpass $15,000.”

Daren won a tailgate grill, but most importantly, $200 to his favorite charity. Daren selected the Ames Police Foundation’s Shop With A Cop charity event. On Oct. 3, Dentistry At Somerset made a $200 donation to Shop With A Cop in honor of Daren. Since its beginning in 1994,

Shop With A Cop has made holidays brighter for thousands of disadvantaged children in the Ames area. Last year’s program was a big success. Officers from the Ames Police Department and local partner agencies hosted youth from throughout Story County. In early December, officers and their special young guests will head off to Target via CyRide for a morning of shopping, eating, gift

100 years of Madrid Boy Scouts marked at Mitigwa

The Prairie Winds District of the Boy Scouts of America held their fall camporee Sept. 2022 at the Mitigwa Scout Reservation. Around 200 Scouts, leaders, volunteers and staff attended the event which marked the beginning of the 100th year of Scouting in Madrid with Troop 150. Many “Madrid centric” outdoor events and history overviews permeated the weekend. Scouts chose from five “high adventure” activities during morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday. Those sessions included a morning bike ride on the High Trestle Trail, geology/fossil talk, and tour of the Madrid Historical Museum; an afternoon canoe trip down the Des Moines river from Luther to Madrid; two hikes along the Des Moines River valley with a geology/fossil talk

and Madrid Historical Museum tours; a climbing package at Camp Mitigwa, which featured the new zip lines over the lake; and a shooting sports package with tomahawks, rifles and shotguns. In addition, activities midway events ran throughout the day. Some of the activities were crosscut saws, BX bikes, GAGA ball, frisbee golf, Civil War and Dragoon reenactments, and a late 1880s style “WeCanDoIt” village. The Friday night campfire featured Scout skits, Keith Kudej of the Madrid Historical Society overviewing local area history and Jeff Fisher and his team lighting off a firework display on the dam across from the amphitheater. Saturday campfire featured Donald Gee, who performed at the World Scout Jamboree and wrote original

Scout-themed music, and Lt. Col. (ret) Richard Baldwin, USAF as keynote speaker. Rich is Madrid Troop 150’s Eagle Scout No. 4. He had an exemplary military career including being award 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses. He went on to become an internationally recognized expert in engineering and construction safety. He presented a well-received message on Scouting Values and Impacts. By the end of the weekend, everyone was a bit tired and damp, but everyone had a great time. There will be more activities throughout the year as the 100th celebration continues including articles for the paper, Scout events, and a likely Madrid Scouting alumni reunion lunch on Sat of next Labor Day weekend.

Nevada FFA Chapter sold a John Deere model 50 tractor to John and Julie Stephens on Thursday, Sept. 26, for $3,500. The tractor was donated to Nevada FFA in September 2017. The tractor belonged to Julie’s father, Paul Potter, in Columbus, Ind. Johanna Stephens and her boyfriend hauled the tractor from Indiana to Nevada using John Pitt’s trailer. Nevada High School students and FFA members replaced rear rims, replaced the intake and exhaust manifold, rebuilt the seat and battery box,and& inner tubes were replaced as well. Cost of inputs for the FFA chapter was $924, leaving a profit of $2,576. Students whoworked on the tractor included Luke Merfeld, Emilio Saldana, Karissa Mayle, Wyatt Lewis, Grace Francis and Ryne Isleb.

Nevada FFA makes a visit to Golden K Kiwanis

Nevada High School’s award-winning agriculture education teacher and FFA advisor Kevin Cooper, the 2019 Iowa Conservation Teacher Of The Year and 2017 Iowa Outstanding Ag Education Teacher, teamed with several of his top students to give a presentation to Ames Golden K on the activities and projects conducted by Nevada FFA.
