Taste Buds donate snacks Ames Breakfast Lions Club members to Edwards program recognized for special service

Members of the Ames Breakfast Lions Club were recognized for special service during the club’s annual Christmas Dinner recently held at the Iowa Stater Restaurant. IRISH TENOR HOLIDAY CONCERT Michael Londra, a tenor from Wexford, Ireland, but now of Ames, will perform holiday music from his newly released album at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Admission is free to the live concert. Donations for charity are requested.

CHRISTMAS CAROL SINGING An afternoon of Christmas carol singing will be at 2 p.m. in the Farwell T. Brown Auditorium, Ames Public Library. This holiday musical opportunity is a joint effort by Ames Public Library, Ames Mennonite Church and First Baptist Church of Ames. Hymnals will be provided. Part singing is encouraged but not mandatory. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend this family friendly yuletide carol sing. Gilbert ag ed students donate 2,740 pounds from community garden Gilbert ag ed students donate 2,740 pounds from their WinField United community garden. Through the WinField United community garden program, Gilbert ag education students donated 2,740 pounds to Food at First and Bethesda Lutheran Church this summer. Since 2010, the WinField program has supported more than 20 gardens each summer, leading to a total donation of more than 550,000 pounds grown and donated to local food shelves. The community gardens are committed to engaging the Land O’Lakes Foundation’s three pillars of hunger, education and community. Through this program, local students engage in agricultural

Roland-Story meteorology students analyze humidity The 31 students in Roland-Story’s meteorology class recently completed a lab in which they worked to better understand how

evaporation and condensation impact humidity. In their lab, students determined the dew point, which is the tem-

perature to which air must be cooled to become saturated with water vapor. When further cooled, the airborne water vapor will condense to form

liquid water. When air cools to its dew point through contact with a surface that is colder than the air, water will condense on the surface.

Lisa Thogerson receives service leadership award The Town and Country Kiwanis Club of Ames recently presented Lisa Thogerson with the 2018 Service Leadership Award for club leadership and service in the community. Thogerson has been a member of the Cyclone Country AKTION Club (a local branch of Kiwanis International) since 1996. Thogerson has grown as a club leader throughout her time in Kiwanis. She has attended several Kiwanis district conventions to develop leadership skills and gain ideas for the local AKTION club. Besides serving two terms as president of the club, she has been vice president, activity chair and service projects chair. Thogerson has been a regular participant in the 21 AKTION Club food drives at Lincoln Center Hy-Vee, resulting in thousands of pounds of food donated to local food pantries. She has helped with CROP Walk, Kiwanis Pancake Days and Salvation Army bell ringing. She has spearheaded three Pizza Ranch fundraisers, helping the club raise money to Eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus for underdeveloped countries in Africa. Thogerson volunteers in other capacities in the community as well. She is a Reiman Gardens volunteer, helping with Spirits in the Garden

at Halloween. She is an active member of her congregation at St. Cecelia and currently serves as a Global Messenger for Special Olympics, advocating for people with special abilities and speaking at their halftime ceremonies. She also serves the community through her involvement in the organization ACE (Advocacy, Connection, Empowerment). Thogerson works part-time in the community and has been employed at Pizza Ranch, McDonalds, Dollar Tree and the Firehouse Subs Restaurant. Somehow, she still fi nds time for her personal interests such as cycling, bocci and basketball through Special Olympics and spending time with friends. The Cyclone Country AKTION Club

currently has 25 members who actively serve the community in many areas. They meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the fi rst and third Tuesdays of the month at United Methodist Church to enjoy educational speakers, social activities and to plan their service projects. The club’s main advisor is Ed Gillott, of Ames Noon Kiwanis Club, supported by Nancy Kaltenhauser and Carl Anderson, of Ames Noon Kiwanis; and also by John Greve, Dan Franklin and Marilyn Johnson, of the Ames Town and Country Kiwanis Club.
