generosity of congregational and community members, the youth have raised enough money to purchase gifts for children and youth in the community. This year, on Dec. 5, 66 middle school and high school youth and adults went shopping to purchase these gifts. Between two trips to Walmart in Ames, dozens of clothes, shoes and toys were purchased and then wrapped. Kristin Johnson, director of youth ministry at St.

Petri and Bergen Lutheran, said “This project continues to not only provide our youth an opportunity to serve others, but it helps them to see just how hard it can be to shop when you only have so much money to spend and need to stay within a ‘budget.’ It’s been a pretty eye-opening experience for some of our youth.” This project continues to impact the lives of many in the community and is a highlight for their ministry and enjoyed by all.

Ballard class learns about ultrasounding The animal science class at Ballard High School took a break from its meat science unit to welcome some four-legged classroom guests. Sophomore Joseph Jordan and his mom, Dianna, brought in five goats to be ultrasounded on Nov. 22. The does were bred and the class got to find out with the Jordans if they were successful. Four of the five goats were found to be pregnant. Conducting the ultrasounds and teaching the

class about ultrasounding was visiting veterinarian Dr. Paul Plummer from Iowa State University. “He described what fluid and parts of the digestive and reproductive systems on pregnant goats would look like so we could identify them on the ultrasound,” said junior Brant Spaid. A few students even took advantage of Dr. Plummer’s offer to run the ultrasound machine. “It was a fun activity to be the one doing the ultrasound,” Joe Jordan said.
