Eight volunteers are needed to help from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, to prepare the day’s meal. Eight volunteers are also needed from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, to assist with packaging donations and manning the donation stations at the Free Market food pantry. Nevada FFA harvests 33 acres of crops Nevada FFA members and volunteers harvested 33 acres of Nevada FFA corn and soybeans. Students harvested part of the corn with the chapterowned John Deere diesel combine. The combine required several repairs after getting into the field including a front engine drive belt idler pulley, cab heater hoses and a main hydraulic line under the cab. By making their own repairs, the students calculated they saved more

than $700 in labor cost. Collins Brothers donated harvesting and hauling of more than 2,000 bushels of corn. Steve and Jim Owen harvested the FFA Flummerfelt soybean field on Oct. 23 and 24. Mike Wright donated the use of a semi for hauling corn off the FFA DOT fields. Paula Sonnabend, of RobSeedCo, brought a weigh wagon and measured more than 20 corn hybrid varieties on Friday, Nov. 8.

Students learned how important crop insurance is for risk management as there was yield loss on the soybean field. In addition, all documented bushels were submitted to the Farm Service Agency to receive Market Facilitation Program (MFP) payment of $1.68 per bushel of soybeans, and $.01 per bushel of corn. This offered students another insight into the discussion of trade issues and impact on commodity markets.
