Story City Yulefest Tour of Homes The 34th-annual Yulefest Tour of Homes in Story City was on Dec. 7 and 8. Three Story City organizations, Hook and Eye Questers, P.E.O. Chapter FZ, and Praeri Rail Trail Questers, hosted the event, with three very unique homes. The Senti home was originally built in Connecticut in 1755. This colonial home was dismantled, shipped to Iowa via train, and then reconstructed in 1976-77 on a beautiful site along the Skunk River northeast of Story City. This his-
torical home is filled with period furnishings and is a treasure for those who attended this year’s tour. The Torgeson home, built in 1915, is filled with many family heirlooms and memories. This craftsman style home has been beautifully restored and sits prominently on the corner of Hillcrest and Fourth Street. The Torgeson family has honored their heritage by using agriculture and family artifacts throughout while continuing to respect the craftsman’s skill.
The Ness home is a newly built townhome near Riverbend Golf Course. Tastefully decorated, with an eclectic flair, it is filled with Christmas and family treasures. Numerous decorative pieces were passed down through families, including a front yard rock that stood as a tie-up for horses in a great-greatgrandfather’s blacksmith shop. Additionally, the Bartlett Museum was open for tours, with complimentary refreshments served and Nativity scenes on display.

Belitsos receives LGBTQ Legacy Leader Award Story County resident George Belitsos was recently presented with an LGBTQ Legacy Leader Award by One Iowa and DSM Magazine. The award was presented at the Temple for the Performing Arts in downtown Des Moines in late October. This was the inaugural year for this award which is designed to
honor those who demonstrate leadership in their communities, serve as role models and mentors to others, and contribute to the appreciation and recognition of cultural diversity in Iowa. Belitsos was selected specifically for his leadership work in child welfare reform and promotion of human and civil rights. Belitsos was one of
five awardees selected from across Iowa. Too often, the accomplishments of leaders in the LGBTQ community have not been recorded in a lasting way. The LGBTQ Legacy Leader Awards provide lasting platform to celebrate trailblazers and ensure their impact is remembered and preserved in history.
Five Nevada Middle school students reported to Hap’s Air Service at the Ames Airport on Saturday, Dec. 7, for intro-flights. The educational activity is part of the Nevada High School agriculture education program offering a multitude of experiences for students. Students had been briefed on aviation fundamental prior to the intro-flight utilizing Jeppesen Sanderson instructional text. Each student was able to experience flying from the dual controls with CFI (certified flight instructor) Glenn Dodd in a Cessna 172 plane. Three of the stu-
dents had never flown before, either commercially or small private. “Wow, that was great!” exclaimed Jace Davenport.
Currently, there is a strong demand for commercial aviators, including aerial agriculture applicators.

Nevada FFA repaired and sold a Farmall 560 tractor that was donated to the chapter in the fall of 2018 by Murl and Ann Borts. Dustin and Lisa Hartman purchased the tractor. Hartmans also had the students mount a New Idea loader on the tractor which was
challenging for the students. Brackets for the loader were mounted; a large twoinch steel shaft also had to be straightened for proper assembly. Some new hydraulic lines were made, and the tractor hydraulic quick couplers also needed servicing. Nevada FFA had $153 of cost to get
the tractor running, which included a battery, choke cable and ignition points. Hartmans paid $1,600 for the tractor, providing the FFA chapter with a $1,447 profit. Nevada FFA has sold $12,600 of tractors in 2019 providing a profit of $9,794 for the chapter.
SAE (supervised agriculture experience) projects are a component of the full agriculture program which also includes classroom instruction as well as the FFA organization. The Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program involves practical agricultural activities performed by students outside of scheduled classroom and labora-
tory time. SAEs provide a method in agricultural education for students to receive real-world career experiences in an area of agriculture that they are most interested in. Nathan Faga, a junior at Roland-Story High School and also the FFA secretary has a work placement SAE project, where he works at the Story City Locker.
Nathan has worked there for several years and has gained multiple skills from this experience. According to Brad Taylor, Roland-Story agriculture instructor, “Nathan has learned many skills that are involved with the operation of a business, both in the back room as well as working with customers at the counter.”
