Richard Atwell of Nevada and a group of volunteers sent a last truckload of 170 bicycles to Working Bikes in Chicago since Atwell is retiring from the bike business. Over the past 16 years, Atwell has collected more than 10,000 bikes, mostly from Story County. The donated bikes are put in working order by the nonprofit organization in Chicago and shipped to developing nations in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Atwell thanks Michelle Gibson and the 4H board for the use of a building at the fairgrounds in the Nevada to store the bikes, Don Hale and Bill Ward for their dedication and countless hours and all those who donated bikes, helped load trucks and assisted along the way.
