Students learn about buffering

The Roland-Story agriculture education classes continue with the science-based studies as they learn more about the uses of the LabQuest Interface Devices. In their most recent experiments, the students have been testing the buffering ability of water and additional substances as well as conducting inquiry-based labs on the effect of pH on plant health. “These activities were developed so that students would be able to see and use a practical application of learning about pH,” said Brad Taylor, agriculture instructor.

Greg Artz of KEY Cooperative visited Kevin Cooper’s ag business class in October to present the “Bushels for Ag”program. KEY Cooperative donated 40 bushels of soybeans and 100 bushels of corn to Nevada Ag Education and FFA for the purpose of marketing. Students must develop a marketing strategy and make decisions based on fundamental market information or technical information, to sell at the optimum times. Artz explained basics of commodity price discovery, basis, futures, and price averaging over time. Some calculations were worked through with students regarding crop insurance income and yield risk management. Cooper assigned half the grain to Ag Business class first block, and the other half to Ag Business seventh period, and let the competition begin to see which class can do the best job marketing. Students are currently studying futures marketing including commodities, and financials. A timely topic also was brought up in class with the futures trading the crypto currency bitcoin. Students were confused as to what a crypto currency is, this led to spirited discussion and classroom “voyage of discovery”. “Just like the statue on ISU campus, nothing ever is, everything is becoming” Cooper added.

Roland-Story ag I students build miniature backboards

Dyaln Kahl shows his miniature backboard prior to staining and adding the rim.

Morgan Blythe, Anna Peach and Danielle Grady prepare to stain their backboards.

Students in the Roland-Story afternoon agriculture education I class are spending their last 2 weeks of the semester learning about basic woodshop practices as they fabricate miniature basketball backboards as a class project. The 30 students in the class are learning about preparing and finishing a wood project using basic power tools such as band saws, sanders, drills and routers and are also learning about paints, stains and varnishes.

Ag tech students create projects Students in the Roland-Story agriculture technology class have recently completed a unit of instruction in which they had to create a hydraulic system. Pictured is Jakob Lester, who is developing his hydraulic system from popsicle sticks, wood dowel, paper clips, syringes, plastic tubing and hot glue. The premise of the innovation assignment is for the students to research a topic of interest, then create a prototype of their invention and finally to test the system to see how well it works and to make refinements to the system. “This has turned out to be a really enjoyable task for the students as it was project based and called upon them to problem solve, make decisions and be creative,” said Brad Taylor, agriculture instructor.
