BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN ARCHITECTURE THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM (ARC61303/ARC2224)
SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER (AUGUST 2016) [10 MARKS] NAME: AMIR FAUZAN BIN AMIRUDDIN ID: 0321844 LECTURER: MR. NAZMI ANUAR TUTORIAL TIME: SYNOPSIS NO: READER TITLE: IN THE CAUSE OF ARCHITECTURE (1908) AUTHOR: FRANK LLYOD WRIGHT
In the beginning of the text, the author refers the architecture to the fine art of a Nature. He was describing about the manifestation of the nature through the elements on designing a building. Architect should design a building which has a simplicity and repose in order to keep the qualities that measure the true value of any work of art. He mentioned about the space program, they need to plan carefully as the beauty follows the comfort and utility. The applications of detailing for decoration also is unnecessary unless if you really into it, otherwise if it is just for the purpose to look rich, it is better off without it. The author also interested if the furniture of the houses are built in as a part of the whole unit together. Selection of the color scheme and materials also highlighted as to enhance the houses and the context. He talked about the styles of houses, a house should represent the individuals and they have a right to express it. A house that has a good character stands a good chance of growing more valuable. Unfortunately, of all listed above he later realized that are issues that lead to the loss of architectural sense. Some of the elements are now pre-fabricated and manufactured as the machine replace the value of human’s craftsmanship. ‘The skylines of our domestic architecture were fantastic abortions, tortured by…” this statement shows he clearly disappointed with the styles on that period. He stated that the people are less concern about the spiritual integrity of the environment, the dignity of an idea is loss and a structure has no more meaning. The author was questioning initially about ‘what is styles?’. He described that the styles on that present day are no longer had a uniformity of type which has characterized the so called great ‘styles’. The condition are changed, architect are independent which lead to inconsistent styles. The industrial period offered a mass production and simpler way to manufacture a product rather than manually produce. Architect’s relation to the economic and industrial movement on that time was sadly out of joint. In my opinion, the author had a good point of view. He wrote this essay in 1908 but I can see it st clearly that it is happening today. 21 century Industrial revolution has taking over the dignity of an idea. The values of art philosophy in design are loss. I believe, the author seems so difficult to state that it is possible to incarnate the good architecture in this period of time.
