SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER (AUGUST 2016) [10 MARKS] NAME: AMIR FAUZAN AMIRUDDIN ID: 0321844 LECTURER: MR NAZMI ANUAR TUTORIAL TIME: 1400-1600 SYNOPSIS NO: READER TITLE: ARCHITECTURE WHERE DESIRE CAN LIVE – JACCQUES DERRIDA AUTHOR: EVA MEYER I found it very difficult for me to understand the text of an interviewed session by Eva Meyer on Jacques Derrida about “architecture where desire can live”. However, I find Derrida was conceiving architecture as a technique separate from thought and refer it to the modernism and deconstructivism of postmodern architecture which I personally not sure when is the beginning and the origin of those movements. I agreed with Derrida’s thought architect should design a space that has a connection between the physical forms and creating a path toward and within it. A viable path that can control the language of thinking is considered as technique. Derrida stated that the freedom of thinking has no limits which he described as infinity of thinking and beyond the capabilities of the historical philosophy that relates with physics/God/techne/man. He highlighted de-constructivism as a new movement to break the limitations. The limitations where ‘desire can live’. De-constructivism is the beginning of a non-representative architecture which is the freedom of creating a space and form in order to create a different kind of living. Postmodern de-constructivism can develop a new language of supreme that highlight the experience rather than just a space which no longer be manifest in a traditional way as Greek, Christian and etc. Derrida describes the movement as to free itself that has a capability of mastering the diversity of the languages and becoming a universal translation. I questioned myself when I tried to relate it with Charles Jenks description about semiology. How to translate the language if the form or space of the building becoming a universal translation? The meaning became multivalent. De-constructivism define by some architect as a "movement" or a new "style" that out of context and showed a lack of understanding of their ideas. However, there are always a percept, a concept and a representation and people usually will put into words and becoming a political context which will remain continuing discuss rather than end statement.
