Founded by Dagga Guðmundsdóttir in 2011, Litla Prjónabúðin (little yarn shop in Icelandic) is a gem of a knitting store in the suburb of Reykjavik. Dagga finished her degree to become a textile instructor, but never went into teaching and instead opened her lovely shop, which also functions as her studio space where she dreams about new designs. What catches your eyes when you walk into her shop are the sweet samples from her book, and an eclectic selection of Icelandic, European and American yarn. Relatedness in Iceland is a complex topic. As well as there being a fascination with genealogies, or blood ties, Icelandic cultural tradition has it that upon meeting someone the immediate task is to discover if you have an ancestor in common. Telling stories about one another is the Icelandic method of strengthening old ties and making new ones.

Knitting is intrinsically related to the life of the Icelandic people. Having being populated in the late 9th century, Iceland was introduced with knitting through German or Dutch merchants in the 16th Century. Many factors contributed to knitting's ubiquity in the country: the abundance of sheep and thus the raw material, wool, the simplicity, practicality and portability of the craft, which you can practice anywhere, even walking from one village to another, the small number of materials needed, and the possibility to use any leftovers yarn were all factors. A whole nation started to knit: men, women, and children. Knitting became the main home industry and a significant part of Icelandic exports. As for domestic use, everything was knitted, from head to toe: trousers, suspenders, jackets, pillows and even tents, just to name a few examples.

This lasted for 4 centuries but toward the end of the 20th century, traditional hand knitting disappeared as a home industry and in time, the special knitting skills were lost. In the 1930’s the unspun lopi wool was “discovered” and was followed in the 50-60’s by the invention of what is today the most prominent example of Icelandic knitting: the lopi sweater or lopapeysa, which became extremely popular in the 70’s. The 80’s saw a harsh worldwide wool crisis that didn’t spare Iceland and all the spinning mills in the country went bankrupt one after the other. It is only thanks to the will of a few employees from the last mill to close, Alafoss, that, a new mill, Istex, was founded in 1986 with the help of sheep farmers who provided wool in exchange for shares in the company. To this day it remains the only mill we have in Iceland.

inspires new brands such as Einrum, a mix of silk and lopi, or Gusta, a blended alpaca and lopi, and novelty yarns such Love Story Einband or Gilitrutt Tviband, my extra soft and fine lace yarns made of selected Icelandic lambswool. Increased interest in hand-spun wool, natural dyeing and raising sheep for wool have also contributed to a resurgence of the industry. So, if you meet an Icelander, he/she will own at least one lopi sweater, and it doesn’t matter whom you address, a nurse, a lawyer, a good friend, or a grandmother, a fisherman or the President of Iceland, an old woman or a young boy, they will always have a knitting story to tell you.

A cabled pullover knit horizontally from side to side. The combination of cable and lace stitches creates an impression of floating water, like the giant waterfall in Iceland where the name came from. After knitting the cables, lower body and sleeves are knit in stockinette stitch. The tightly spun yarn is recommended to show off the striped texture. A pair of toe-up socks designed with two types of stitch patterns, inspired by the designer’s trip to Guernsey Island. The resulting fabric is stretchy and interesting to knit throughout. Hilary Grant is a British designer, who studied textile design before she went to work for Alexander McQueen, then started her own knitwear label in 2011. This is her first book, a collection of modern interpretation of fair isle knitting.
Needle felting has become one of the most popular fiber arts in Japan, possibly more popular than knitting, but I'd never thought of trying it myself until I found this book. I love how the animals look realistic enough but still very adorable. The book not only shows you how to make the samples by youself, but also explains in details about other techniques and tools that the author find useful. Now that I learned a lot about felting, it is going to be a lot harder to throw away leftover yarn, scrap wool fabrics and felted sweaters.
Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift is used through out the book, which is not to be recommended to beginner knitters, but the resulting patterns are worthwile of your efforts. From small items such as hats and mitts to pullovers, the book is full of timeless, wearable knitwear. 著者 : ヒラリー・グラント ソフトカバー、144 ページ

As a genderqueer femme whose multi-disciplinary work incorporates performance and textiles, Ash desires to make the practical more beautiful and art more accessible. Her textile work focuses on knitwear design and natural dyeing. Her book, flotsam & jetsam: 15 knits inspired by ocean-bed debris, was released in september 2016.
Bethany, who lives outside of Washington D.C., is a software developer with a minor in Japanese and an MBA. She learned to knit as a child, but it didn’t come in handy until she went to college in one of the snowiest cities in the country. She has two cats who love to help her knit (especially when it comes to winding the skein).

Courtney studied fashion design at Parsons School of Design, then traveled to Peru where she worked with an artisan knitting co-op. She moved back to Wyoming to spend more time knitting and enjoying the outdoors. Tokuko is a knitwear designer and the corepresentative of amirisu co., working non-stop to manage a yarn shop and knitting classes. She's finally used to all her finished projects being taken from her as shop samples. She lives in Nara.

Our first trip to Iceland showed me how knitting is a part of everyday life and I was moved a little. We saw a random basket of scrap yarn for people to use freely, at a trendy café in the city, and a couple of old ladies were knitting while enjoying conversation over coffee. On the wall was a frame of embroidered words among artistic posters. Crafts are everywhere, and I loved it.
