80 年代だったらハーブ・リッツ、今だったらプラト ンといった写真家が好きです。白黒だけど、いや、白 黒だからこそ、余計に人柄がよく見透かせる写真に グッとくるのです。人柄が表れるような目尻の皺、洋 服の織り地まで見えるような写真。白黒になった途端、 今まで自分は雰囲気に惑わされていたのだとハッとす ることもあるし、本当は隠したい本音が見えてしまう こともあります。 そんな号を作ってみたいと、ずっと思っていました。 色合わせを楽しむニットも素敵ですが、本号の主役は 編み地。白や黒 1 色、もしくは白と黒を組み合わせた ものなどありますが、色がないからこそシルエットや テクスチャが際立つ、素敵な作品が揃っています。1 点ずつじっくり眺め、編み地の美しさに感嘆して欲し いし、雰囲気に惑わされずに自分に似合うかを見極め 編む作品を選んでほしい。そんなきっかけになれば嬉 しいです。 特集記事では、編み地の幅を広げる書籍と、インタ ビューを紹介しています。新しい年にあたって、少し 手元をじっと見つめる時間を、皆さんが持てますよう に。 トクコ & メリ
Some of my favorite photographers are Herb Rits, and Platon. I love how their monochromatic portraits always show the subjects' personalities more distinctly. The wrinkles around the eyes and the texture of the clothes are more defined. Those images often make me realize that I often only observe the overall atmosphere of photos, missing the minutia. That's the starting point of this issue - to really see rich textures and fine details.
Playing with colors is fun, but the theme of this issue is textures of knit fabrics. All pieces are made in black, grey and white. The lack of hues accentuates the refined silouettes and textures of the knitwear. We hope you will examine each item closely for what they are, and make a discerning judgement of which design would look best on you. The featured article introduces some books and an interview to help you expand your knit fabric repertoirs. To start a new year, we'd like to spend a little time enjoying the textures of our creation. Hope you will be inspired. Tokuko & Meri

Hachinosu Andrea Mowry
A casual cardigan with bold black and white stripes. The body and sleeves are fitted, while the shawl collar, which is embellished with a honeycomb pattern, is wide and full. The shape of the cardigan with longer back and a cropped front, goes well with dresses and wide pants. The pattern has many elements to keep knitters engaged throughout, from stripes to cable knitting. 白と黒のストライプが目を惹く、カジュアルなカー ディガン。身頃や袖はコンパクトですが、蜂の巣模様 が彩るショールカラーはたっぷりと。身頃は後ろが長 く、前は短くなっているので、ワンピースと合わせて も素敵ですし、ワイドパンツでもバランスが取りやす いと思います。ストライプや模様編みで最初から最後 まで飽きさせないデザインです。

Bramley Kristin Jones
A feminine pullover that has both a loosely fit silhouette and puffed sleeves with an allover cable pattern which is very bold and unique and adds a modern twist to the design. The Stone Wool Cormo yarn is extremely soft to the touch and creates a beautiful drape. Three-quarter length sleeves would also look great with this design. ゆったりめのシルエットとパフスリーブの組み合わせ が可愛いセーター。全面を飾るケーブル模様はとって も大胆。甘めのシルエットをモダンに見せてくれます。 柔らかいコルモ種の毛糸で編まれているのでドレープ 感もあり、肌触りも良い一枚に。袖丈は肘下くらいま で伸ばしても素敵です。

Enmu amirisu We designed a wardrobe staple that can be used for both daily wear and special occasions. Many modern elements are woven into the design, such as a clean neckline, dropped shoulders, and compact cuffs. The contrasting color around the neck and cuffs can be made more distinct or you can knit the garment entirely in one color. Anagram Amy van de Laar
A hat and scarf set, using a geometric motif that combines lace and cable knitting. The stitch patterns for both designs were created by rearranging a small number of elements, just like rearranging letters in a word to make an anagram. The motif is actually very small and simple, but the repetition creates a complex and gorgeous fabric. The scarf is knit in garter stitch, which makes it reversible and keeps the edges flat. Choose a yarn with a tighter twist to achieve beautiful stitch definition. レースとケーブル編みを組み合わせた幾何学模様を全 体に配した、マフラーと帽子のセット。文字を組み替 えて言葉を作るアナグラムのように、単純な図形を組 み替えてモチーフを作りました。ひとつのモチーフは 小さいのに、繰り返していくととても複雑な模様に見 える、美しいデザインです。マフラーのベースはガー ター編みなので、裏側も違和感なく使え、端も丸まり ません。撚りの強い糸を選べば、模様がはっきり出て より効果的に仕上がりますよ。

Geo Point Hat Dallas Ann Prentice
A hat with a bold geometric pattern knit in stranded colorwork. The brim is fitted to cover the ears and with a thick fabric this hat is great protection against a cold north wind. Knitting with a worsted weight yarn, like Quince & Co. Lark, makes it a good beginner colorwork project. Because the brim is garter stitch and very stretchy, one size fits from teenager to adult male. Inkwell Alice Caetano
A black and white sweater that reminds us of old pen drawings, like hundreds of lines scratched with ink on paper. With the funnel neck and clean waist shape, the design is reminiscent of something a heroine from an old monochrome film would wear. The horizontal stripes on the center panels are knit bottom-up in slip stitches and colorwork. Once seamed, sleeves are picked up and knit into cuffs. Lumen Fiona Alice
The pattern is named after one of the units to measure brightness, which is often used in black and white photography. Both hems are knit in a solid pale gray color and the middle section is knit in two shades of gray yarns. Using a speckledye yarn for a contrast color could create a more interesting fabric. Once you get used to the pattern and pick up a rhythm, it will be a fun and easy knit. Since it is knit in the round, there is no need to worry about the wrong side! 白黒写真でしばしば用いられる、明るさを表す単位 のひとつの光束 (lumen) から名付けられたマフラー。 裾は薄いグレーの単色で、中央は濃淡グレーのカラー ワークで編みます。手染めのグレーを使うとより複雑 な表情に。石畳の道を写したモノクロ写真のような、 不思議な表情をたたえた作品です。一度リズムを掴め ばあとは繰り返し、輪編みなので糸渡しを気にする必 要がないのも嬉しい。

Shari lives in rural Vermont. She works as a naturopath's office assistant and is a student of folk herbalism. Every day she finds time to write, take photographs and walk down her dirt road. Her work has been featured in 1110 journal, Taproot magazine, Kindred magazine and the book From Fields, Orchards, and Gardens. ヴァーモント州の田舎に住 み、自然療法クリニックの助 手をしながら、ハーブについ て学ぶ。日々時間をみつけて は文章を書き、写真を撮り、 近所の田舎道を散歩する。作 品はこれまで 1110 journal、 Taproot などの雑誌や書籍に て紹介されている。
Maya Durham
Maya is eighteen and has just graduated high school. She's been making art her whole life, mostly preferring paint, ink and pencil. She's excited to have her work appear in amirisu magazine, which is a wonderful way to begin her artistic career. Although she doesn't knit often herself, Maya gets to appreciate and wear hand knits produced by her mother, knitwear designer Gudrun Johnston. 高校を卒業したばかりの18歳。 油絵やペン画などが好きで、常 にアートに没頭している。本誌 に作品が掲載 (p.4-5) されてと ても感激 ! 編みものはたまにす る程度だが、母親のグッドラン・ ジョンソンの手編みセーターを 着る幸運に恵まれている。

Both Tokuko and Meri have struggled to handle the increased responsibilities - Meri being forced to work shorter hours, Tokuko being required to shoulder some of Meri's workload - and decided to change things a little bit. Instead of 3 billingual issues per year, amirisu will be released twice a year, in spring and fall, with more content in each issue. It will remain bilingual, but English and Japanese versions will be printed separately. The number of pages being the same, readers will get more content. The new format will be trialed for a few years, until we are confident that publishing activities won't be sacrificing our personal lives - which is the key source of our inspirations. With these changes, both of us hope to spend more time with Meri's newborn baby at this important stage of his life. amirisuは2018年夏に発行される16号より、当面の あいだ年2回の発行となります。メリが出産を機に時 短勤務を開始した関係で、年3回の発行が難しくなり ました。

Meri, the editor, creative and business development director, and co-owner of amirisu co., lives in the sacred city of Kyoto with a husband and a newborn boy. Past experience includes a+u magazine, management consulting and marketing.
Tokuko is a knitwear designer and the co-owner of amirisu co., working non-stop to manage a yarn shop and teaching knitting classes. She's finally used to all her finished projects being taken from her as shop samples. She lives in Nara.
2014 年夏より京都在住。編集・経営コンサル・マーケティン グ職を経て、amirisu co. で共同代表。編集、クリエティブ・ディ レクション、マーチャンダイジング、企画等を担当。2017 年 3 月に出産し、1 児の母に。
