Preparations for the Pelotonia Ride to End Cancer in full swing On Sunday, April 28th Robin Thompson and some of the other members of her riding team came to Amlin to serve up pancakes. The team, with the help of Bruce Kerr, made hundreds of pancakes. The members of Amlin helped the team raise over 500 dollars towards their ride. Pelotonia is a bike ride with ONE GOAL in mind, ending cancer. Riders can chose routes of 25, 50, 75, 100, or 180 miles long. Each route has a corresponding fundraising commitment that riders must achieve. Pelotonia 2012 raised approximately 11.9 million dollars among its 6000 riders. So far, Pelotonia 2013 is in full swing. There are already 4700 registered riders and 2 million dollars raised so far. All of the proceeds from this ride are given directly to the OSU James Cancer Center. The ride is scheduled for August 10th and 11th. You can contribute in the goal to end cancer several ways. First, the team is always looking for riders to join them. Second, consider being a volunteer for the ride. There are no fundraising commitments for volun-

The story of how Amlin United Methodist Church changed one person’s life kind and faith-filled people who really want to see their church grow and share the Good News. Our children became involved from the beginning

and now have a church home here. I have really appreciated the time and space given to me so that I could find my niche. I have never felt the usual pres-

sures as the “Pastor’s Wife” and that has been refreshing. I know that the Holy Spirit is moving at Amlin and I feel lucky to be a part of it. I encourage you

to listen for the quiet voice calling you to deeper service and connection, as Amlin UMC is a fantastic place to find your niche too.

Christian education changes announced Amlin United Methodist Church is pleased to announce exciting changes and improvements in our children's ministries. These changes are occurring following extensive conversations and feedback about how we might improve our Sunday school to meet the growing needs of children and families at Amlin. We have adopted Grow, Proclaim, Serve One Room Sunday School- the United Methodist curriculum. There are many advantages to this curriculum and we feel it is a great fit for us after reviewing curriculum choices at the Intentional Faith Development Team meeting. We invite you to go to the web site www.growproclaimserve.com to learn more about it. There is also a mobile site for families available on both the iPhone and Android app formats, to encourage family discussion and ways to help children grow in faith throughout the week. Each Sunday school se sion begins with a short video session and songs that are similar to VBS. The activities are geared for ages 3-12, giving a great variety of options for the teacher/assistant. On June 2nd, the first day of the new curriculum, we will debut a new order of worship in each service to provide more time for children in Sunday school. Children will leave for Sunday school no later than 10 minutes into the service.

While the curriculum is multi-age, our space and teacher limitations force us to make choices about age groups. It seem most logical for the Sunday School during worship to focus on children who may have trouble engaging in worship. Therefore the target group for this Sunday school time is ages 3-reading age (end of grade 2). 3rd grade and up would benefit from a class that would focus on Bible use and that is in the works, pending additional commitments by teachers. We are currently in the process of seeking teachers willing to serve for one month, and ideally one season (three months), at a time. A regular, consistent teacher is best for children, as it builds more comfortable relationships. We will also have an additional adult assistant to help with each lesson in a weekly rotation, similar to how we've done things in the past. This assistant wouldn't be required to do extensive prep work or lesson planning. Wendy Putka is our Children's Ministries Coordinator. Please contact her if you'd like to help children grow in their Christian faith by serving as a teacher or an assistant teacher. Please contact her at deaconess@mac.com.

The Pastor’s Message From Pastor Steve Putka

It’s Like a Family Reunion The sun shines brightly in the month of June, the time of year when a pastor’s thoughts turn to… The West Ohio Annual Conference! So, what is this event, and what does it have to do with our church? And why should I care about some church meeting that most of us will never attend? This annual gathering has lots to do with our church. It also helps us to understand better about what it means to be a United Methodist. Annual Conference will be held at Lakeside, Ohio, where it’s been held for over 100 years. Some have described it as one part church revival, one part business meeting, and one part family reunion. And each of these pieces help us to learn more about who we are as a church… Annual Conference is like a church revival. At this conference, which will be held from June 9-13, people from over 1100 United Methodist churches will gather under one large roof for worship, singing, exceptional preaching, and a challenge to grow in our faithfulness and service to our community. We will experience teaching sessions, breakout workshops, and examples of how other churches are sharing God’s love with others. Each church sends their pastor, and one church member for each ordained, non-retired clergy member. Jim Oldham is Amlin’s member of conference. I expect that both Jim and I will return fired up and even more eager to lead and encourage others in faith. Annual Conference is like a business meeting. We will gather to vote on things like budget, resolutions on social issues, and matters including new mission initiatives regarding global health and maternal care. These decisions help to determine our mission priorities, and even approve things like the clergy health and retirement plans. The United Methodist Church is structured as a religious democracy. We believe both clergy and laity are blessed by the Holy Spirit to make

 As many of you know the Church has purchased a new set of keyboards for the NLC. These keyboards were purchased by a number of families in the church as a special gift to Amlin, and funded outside of our regular budget. These keyboards replaced the small Hammond organ and the baby grand piano used by the praise

team bands (as well as the children’s choir) during second service. Along with the donation of the large organ installed in the rear of the building, these keyboards will provide the church with excellent musical instrumentation for many years to come for both traditional and contemporary worship. Both instruments (keyboards

We believe that all churches should have a voice, and that the best decisions are made when laity and clergy discern God’s will together. Finally, Annual Conference is like a family reunion. Our holy time together reminds us that the United Methodist movement is about much more than our local church at Amlin. Jim and I will look around us and remember that we are just one of many United Methodist churches across our state. Those who participate at conference for more than one year often see friendly faces from prior years, as well as pastors who have served at their church in the past. And both pastors and laity are always thinking, “Wow. Someday we may be in ministry together at the same church!” We have a local church family, but we also have a much larger family, the Body of Christ. Annual Conference reminds us of this larger family, and our call to love the entire human family. While Jim and I are at Annual Conference, we’ll be praying for all at Amlin. Please be in prayer for us, as we make decisions on your behalf, re-energize, and reconnect with our extended Family of Faith. Yours in the joy of Christ’s service, Pastor Steve

Amlin’s parking lot abound with blessings We would like to send out a thank you to everyone who helped to make Amlin’s first annual “Blessing of the Bikes” on Sunday, May 19, 2013 a great success. Pastor Steve provided the blessing to the twelve bikes & riders that were present for a safe and enjoyable riding season. Immediately following the blessing we had a potluck meal with lots of delicious food & a great time of fellowship. Special Events Team

Come and join us for our next Church Forum on June 9th after the 11:00 service. This Forum will also serve as our annual Church Conference, where we will elect next year's administrative board and approve the proposed budget. We will also enjoy an Amlin tradition - a POTLUCK! I hope to see you all there to enjoy some fellowship and help in conducting the business of the Church.
