In addition, the two bio-diesel plants of 200,000 tons each will make a major contribution to the increasing sustainability of Amsterdam Seaports. New sea lock The preparations for the new 500-metre sea lock in IJmuiden are continuing apace. From 2016 onwards, larger tankers, bulk carriers, cruise ships and container vessels will have access to the Amsterdam ports. The new traffic management system in Amsterdam Seaports, which consists of a shore radar system with 26 masts, increases the safety and the circulation of shipping traffic. Direct connections There is also plenty happening on land, such as the expansion and modernisation of the railway infrastructure in the port of Amsterdam, and the recent direct connection to the fast Betuwe rail route, the vital modern cargo railway

Then there are those who praise the excellent physical and digital networks, or the inspiring energy of this centuries-old trading city with its rich cultural heritage. All these are true and yet Amsterdam has still more qualities to offer. Anyone who visits the city and tastes its unique atmosphere can vouch for that fact. As one American entrepreneur writes: “Amsterdam offers all the advantages of a cosmopolitan city and business centre, but retains its intimate scale. Major transit port The Amsterdam port region is a major transit port for dry, liquid and break bulk, containerised and roll-on/roll-off cargoes destined for or originating from the European mainland. But with the shifting of the economic focus in Europe, an extra dimension has emerged. In their search for an ideal operating base to coordinate and consolidate their activities on the European continent, more and more companies are choosing the Amsterdam region for their Pan-European head office. Meanwhile, some 1,400 foreign enterprises have settled in the Amsterdam region. They experience the advantages of the Dutch capital’s financial, business, logistics, creative and IT services. Crucially, there is also the cluster effect created by the nearby international air and seaports. The strength of Amsterdam is also defined to a considerable extent by its compact scale. There are more than 350 million European consumers within 1,000 kilometres of Amsterdam and the region is eminently equipped to distribute and supply transport and passenger flows to and from this second-largest consumer market in the world. In close vicinity is a large port complex where all types of cargo can be handled, good inland waterways, fine road and rail connections, and an airport with an extensive network of global connections. Dutch ports perform very well in terms of transhipment speed, reliability of logistic services and cost effectiveness. The customs authorities developed an advanced and highly automated cargo clearing system, a forerunner to the future European Customs 6 Amsterdam Seaports Guide 2011

The spacious deep sea port of Amsterdam itself serves transhipment and logistics companies that operate on a more personal and clientoriented way compared to the three largest european ports. The port of Zaanstad is situated north of Amsterdam, while west of the city in the North Sea coastal area are the two ports of ijmuiden and Beverwijk. These are situated at the entrance to the North Sea Canal where the steel and paper industry, short sea shipping, fishing, offshore, ferry and cruise traffic are all thriving. The four ports that make up the single entity of Amsterdam Seaports handle a combined total of nearly 90 million tons

welcomes practically all types of goods. The terminals handle dry, liquid and break bulk, container and Ro/Ro cargo. AMSTerDAM Amsterdam is by far the largest port of the four. Deep-water quays as well as facilities along the rail and road links are available at reasonable terms. Companies have recently settled in the new port area, west of the city, among others in the Afrikahaven (Africa harbour) port basin area. Along its 3,600-metre quay is a zone for new cargo handling activities and – further away from the waterfront – distribution and logistics activities. Near the city centre the modern Passenger Terminal Amsterdam accommodates some 120 large cruise vessels annually, while around 1150 river cruise vessels per year also call at Amsterdam. ijMuiDeN Entering the port area from the North Sea, IJmuiden is a rapidly growing tidal port with three port basins. Its harbour is designed for short sea shipping, reefer warehousing and offshore oil, gas and wind energy supply activities. IJmuiden is Europe’s largest fisheries centre, a cruise and ferry port and an offshore base at the same time. It is also an industrial city, with the Tata Steel complex located on the north bank of the port entrance. BeVerwijk East of the spacious sea locks, Beverwijk is the first port on the North Sea Canal. It is a general cargo port handling agricultural products, timber and fertiliser. The port is often called the 8 Amsterdam Seaports Guide 2011

Beverwijk: Flexible short sea and inland shipping port Located three kilometres inland from the North Sea, Beverwijk is a growing short sea services port accommodating oceangoing vessels drawing up to eight metres. Serving the large agricultural complexes of the northern parts of the Netherlands, the port handles significant amounts of seed potatoes, other vegetables and fruit. Several refrigerated and deep-frozen food warehouses are operated by major trading houses. As the largest potato handling port in Europe, Beverwijk’s warehousing and transport personnel have the expertise and skills needed for the specialised handling of agricultural crops. Stevedores, warehouse operators and road hauliers combine to provide a seamless chain of transport services for produce importers and exporters. Beverwijk is also a timber transhipment port, with packaged timber being imported from the northern European and Baltic countries. Fertiliser is by far the largest export commodity to be loaded from inland barges into ocean-going ships, with 250,000 tons per year. The 16,000 m2 Container Terminal Beverwijk (CTB) has the capacity to handle 50,000 containers annually and is fitted with modern equipment such as gantry and mobile cranes, reach stackers and terminal trailers. Zaanstad, first in food The cocoa processing plants in the Zaan region north of Amsterdam are the major reason why Amsterdam Seaports is the world’s largest cocoa port, handling between 600,000 and 700,000 tons of cocoa beans annually. Many other food products are also prominent in the Zaan area, however. Companies such as Dutch supermarket group Ahold, Verkade (United Biscuits), the farina plant of the British Tate & Lyle group, the Meneba flour mill, Honig, Lassie and Duyvis process foodstuffs in their Zaan production units, which are then marketed to consumers the world over. The Zaan region is also focused on the timber industry. Packaged timber – especially pine – is imported via Zaandam, arriving from the Baltic and distributed from the port. Zaanstad has a very distinctive character, with more than 25 large industrial companies located within its municipal borders. The Zaan people have a special industry-oriented mentality. A new expansion site has been prepared along the North Sea Canal in the Westzaner polder and HoogTij industrial area, with the first companies already in place. Covering 100 hectares and including a quay length of 550 metres and an option for another 800, Zaanstad has room for more industry. www.zaanstad.nl

Food throughout the port region The greater Amsterdam port area includes all major Dutch food industries, adding substantially to the total of cargo handled. Together the basic foodstuffs and exports of finished products exceed 10 million tons, the majority of which is agribulk (including animal fodder). Amsterdam is the world’s largest cocoa port, while the major food industries are centred in the Zaan region, northwest of Amsterdam. The food industry was established in this region in the sixteenth century, initially powered by windmills. Then as now, the sector was marked by a combination of high skill levels and an entrepreneurial spirit. Many multinationals have either located in Amsterdam or Zaanstad or taken over Dutch companies. Leading examples include ADM Cocoa, AHOLD, United Biscuits, Tate & Lyle and Cargill. IJmuiden has also become Europe’s number one fish centre. This is due both to its large trawler fleet and the significant pelagic fish and fish product trade. Many reefer warehouses stockpile deep

one cruise ship in Amsterdam every month. Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), located near the Amsterdam city centre, can accommodate three cruise ships at the same time. The Felison Terminal in IJmuiden is located outside the locks, making quick short calls possible. Both terminals have all the facilities required to service the cruise vessels and look after the passengers and their luggage. The two terminals are state of the art, providing a comfortable setting for passengers, ample parking space and luggage handling facilities. They offer good facilities for turnaround calls as both are very conveniently located at a short distance from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Passenger transport to and from the airport is easy and Schiphol has direct connections to over 220 cities on five continents. Cruise passengers are able to go sightseeing in Amsterdam and make excursions into the Dutch countryside. The city of Amsterdam is in the top 10 of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations, with over 7,000 historical monuments located along a beautiful network of canals. It also boasts some of the finest art to be seen anywhere in the world. Amsterdam serves as a magnet to passengers who combine their cruises with a visit to the Dutch capital. The city’s famed ‘rondvaart’ canal boats call at the PTA and the river cruise jetties, allowing arriving passengers to enjoy the city’s attractions immediately upon disembarking. The Felison Terminal in IJmuiden also handles the daily DFDS Seaways ferry service to Newcastle on the northeast coast of England. DFDS has been operating this service for more than 15 years and its success is reflected in the steady increase in the number of passengers from 70,000 in 1995 to more then 540,000 in 2010. Regular shuttle buses to Amsterdam take passengers to Amsterdam and the airport. DFDS Seaways won the Leading Long Sea Ferry Operator award in 2008 and 2009 in the service category of the European World Travel Awards. This award is for North Sea ferry services that last longer than 12 hours. www.ptamsterdam.com www.felisonterminal.com www.kvsa.nl www.amsterdamcruiseport.com 32 Amsterdam Seaports Guide 2011
