Renewable energy commitment can considerably improve the stock price of mining companies A THEnergy study shows how solar and wind energy lower electricity costs, avoid stigmatization and are a sign of superior management. Munich, Germany, November, 2014 -Many sectors within the mining industry face challenges such as lower mineral and metal prices and the threat of further stigmatization. Renewable energy can be an important part of the solution as it improves the energy cost of mines, counters opposition from ecological movements, and above all sends a strong signal of forward orientation, progressive management and corporate governance. A study from Dr. Thomas Hillig Energy Consulting (THEnergy) based on interviews with financing, mining, and energy experts shows that the indirect effects on the mining company’s market value are more significant than the pure electricity cost savings. Energy costs in mining are constantly increasing due to higher electricity consumption and prices. Particularly in remote mines, wind or solar power plants can reduce the energy costs considerably, which has a direct influence on the cost position of mining companies. The business case for renewable energy is normally positive for mining companies, nevertheless mining companies are a long way away from making it into EP!s “National Top 100 list” of US green power users. The list is headed by progressive brands such as Intel, Kohl‘s Department Stores, Microsoft, Google and Wal-Mart. These companies consume and invest into renewable energy because it is profitable
THEnergy – Dr. Thomas Hillig Energy Consulting Munich| Germany
and it improves their standing towards consumers and financial markets. Mining companies face strong opposition, which is facilitated by internet communication; “Move Your Money UK” is a national campaign that calls on depositors to move their savings away from five UKbanks, because they support assets in oil, gas and coal extraction. On the investment side, there are similar developments; the Rockefeller Brothers Fund has recently joined the divestment movement that has pledged not to invest assets worth $50 billion into fossil fuels. The direct effect of such divestment is normally limited, but it brings along a significant threat regarding further stigmatization of certain segments of the mining sector, which makes it more difficult to receive credits, reduces the demand for shares, triggers new legislation and complicates permits. For years the differences could not have been bigger between the worlds of mining and renewable energy. As solar and wind prices have reduced considerably in recent years, many institutional investors have entered the renewable energy industry and have professionalized it. Leading mining companies such as Barrick Gold, Rio Tinto or Glencore as well as smaller players such as Shanta Gold have realized that renewable energy has become an economically attractive solution for many mines and have built first pilots (www.th-energy.net/mining).

EDUCATION “Mining companies that actively move towards renewable energy self-consumption show that they have realized that the world around them has changed and that there are threats regarding energy costs and environmental movements”, underlines Dr. Thomas Hillig, founder of THEnergy. The financial markets reward companies that do not remain captives of the past but instead are actively seeking new solutions. The usage of renewable energy is interpreted by the financial markets as a signal for a flexible and forward-looking decision making process; mining companies that are first movers in actively integrating renewables into their energy mix are therefore considered as progressive and better managed. The THEnergy study challenges mining companies to act quickly, to come up with greenhouse gas mitigation and renewable energy targets, to set other non-financial performance indicators regarding energy and to conceive a comprehensive renewable energy strategy. As underlined by Hillig, “ambitious targets and transparency grant first movers many advantages in communication. If substantial measures are taken and financial markets are targeted with the sustainability communication strategy, a positive effect on the market evaluation and stock prices can be expected.“

Tantalus Rare Earths AG:
NI 43-101 Technical Report and updated Resource Estimate by SGS published • Describes the significant developments taken in the past 18 months and illustrates the commercial potential for the project • Expansion of exploration area and higher average grade result in a significant upgrade of the resource • Contained Total Rare Earths Oxides (TREO) are • Measured 39,092 tonnes with an average grade of 975 ppm • Indicated 138,292 tonnes with an average grade of 878 ppm • Inferred 384,552 tonnes with an average grade of 894 ppm • The previous resource statement from April 2013 showed only an Inferred Mineral Resource of 348,000 tonnes of TREO and an average TREO grade of 800 ppm • In various pitting campaigns in the exploration area 30,059 clay samples have been taken and tested • The information confirms that the Tantalus project in Madagascar is one of the largest ionic clay type rare earths deposits in the world and one of the most advanced located outside of China Grünwald, Germany, 17 December, 2014 - The Technical Report(1) and updated Resource Estimate published clearly shows the significant developments taken in the past 18 months of the Tantalus Rare Earths AG (ISIN DE000A1MMFF4) project in Madagascar. In addition, it illustrates the commercial potential for the project. Based on the exploration work made in 2013 Tantalus‘ resource The report was prepared in accordance with the Canadian National Instrument NI 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects („NI 43-101“) (1)

estimate made by acknowledged testing and consulting group SGS Canada shows a TREO content of Measured Resources 39,092 tonnes, Indicated 138,292 tonnes and Inferred 384,552 tonnes. The average REO grade is approx. 900 ppm. A grid spacing of at least 50 m x 50 m corresponds to Measured Resources. A grid spacing of at least 200 m x 200 m corresponds to Indicated Resources. A grid spacing of at least 500 m x 500 m corresponds to Inferred Resources. (For further details see annex on page 4.)

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY The new resource estimate by SGS represents a significant upgrade to the previous resource statement, which showed a TREO content of 348‘000 tonnes and an average TREO grade of 800 ppm. The cut-off grade used in the report is 200 ppm TREO excluding Cerium and Lanthanum for areas sloping greater than 5 degrees and 320 ppm for flat areas. The cut-off values are consistent with published values from the analogous Chinese deposits. In addition to the previously explored Caldera and surrounding region, the new report includes exploration results from the north-western parts of Tantalus‘ concession. Analysed samples show similar concentration of TREO in the north-west as in the Caldera, thereby significantly increasing the mine-life of the project. For safety reasons the pits at the Tantalus project were not excavated deeper than 10 metres from the surface, with an average of 5.68 metres. Thereby the thickness used in this updated Resource Estimate is app. 6 metres. However, the regolith profile in the Tantalus project area ranges in thickness from 0 metres to more than 40 metres and based upon the available drilling and test pitting data, the average thickness is approximately 13.5 metres. The entire regolith profile contains rare earth mineralisation, and general trends are present with rare earth content typically increasing with depth and then decreases approaching the un-weathered bedrock. The Tantalus project displays a pervasive and wellbalanced rare earth distribution that is prevalent throughout the deposit. The deposit includes appreciable amounts of critical rare earths Dysprosium, Europium, Neodymium, Terbium, and Yttrium as defined by the U.S. Department
of Energy. In the 2011 Critical Materials Report from the U.S. Department of Energy, it was revealed that five of the 16 rare earth elements were found to be critical in terms of supply risk. Their scarcity combined with anticipated growth in demand, makes these higher valued elements the ones expected to experience the best price performance over the next decade. These five rare earth elements are used in magnets for wind turbines and electric vehicles or phosphors in energy-efficient lighting. Since 2013 there has been a significant drop in the prices of all rare earths, however the critical rare earths have retained their value better than their „non-critical“ counterparts. Hydrometallurgical tests made at SGS Lakefield, University of Toronto and Outotec show high levels of extraction for rare earth elements, with the exception of Cerium, with the simple and proven method of using ammonium sulphate as reagent. It should be noted, that in all tests, extractions for thorium and uranium were negligible. Based on metallurgical tests the Technical Report shows that after leaching, in the distribution in the concentrate, Neodymium (33%), Praseodymium (19%) and Dysprosium (16%) represent 68 per cent of the potential revenues. These three rare earths are used in magnetic applications, which is expected to be the fastest growing segment in the rare earths market. Thomas Hoyer, CEO of Tantalus Rare Earths AG, is pleased to present the results of the resource update: „The results have exceeded our previous high expectations. The measured, indicated and inferred resources and the higher average grade by the SGS report show to us that this project has all the technical and commercial prerequisites to become very successful. Our project is on track to

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY in order to produce aggregate for a road construction company, and consisted of QJ341 jaw crusher, and a QH331 cone crusher, with the resulting products being screened by a QA331 screen. From the granite and diorite material, the road construction company is producing aggregates to be used as base material for roads. Korund, and its customer, have utilized the flexibility of the Sandvik machines to operate them in two crushing and screening trains to achieve the desired material sizes. The first train consists of a jaw – QJ341 - feeding a cone – QH331 - which then feeds a screen – QA331 – to produce the finished product. The QJ341 is the flagship model from the Sandvik Construction Premium range of mobile jaw crushers and consistently proves to be one of the world’s best-selling tracked machines in its class. In the Kazakhstan road construction application the jaw is set to a 80mm CSS (Closed Side Setting), allowing the machine to crush the largest material easily. This is then fed into the QH331 cone

crusher which is set at a 32mm CSS to crush and shape the finished product. The QH331 is fitted with the world renowned Sandvik CH430 cone crusher, which comes with a choice of six different crushing chambers and a variety of bush settings, making it one of the most flexible cone crushers on the market today. Finally the crushed and shaped material is then fed to a QA331 screen. This features a two bearing screen box with a unique screening angle built into the bottom deck for ultimate fines screening, making it the perfect solution for this particular train application. The top deck features 25mm square mesh and the bottom deck a 5mm square mesh to produce finished product sizes of 0-4mm, 4-20mm and 20-40mm. The second train operation consists of the QJ341 jaw crusher feeding the QA331 screen directly. This combination allows for a wider range of sizes to be produced as the jaw is able to tackle the most difficult applications, whereas the screen is ideal for ultimate fines screening. The

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY produced materials are 0-4mm, 4-20mm and 20-100mm, made possible by the flexibility of the Sandvik crusher and screen. The equipment has also proved to be highly durable and economical as after 700 hours of operation the screen has only just had its first mesh change. Korund chose from the Sandvik Construction Mobiles portfolio to enable its customers to tackle a wide range of applications, and to have the flexibility to configure the machines in the best way possible for their projects. This, coupled with the durability of the equipment, together with Korund’s comprehensive aftermarket and customer support, makes them an ideal choice for the Kazakhstan market.

S
andvik Construction Russia and authorized distributor Quarry Service recently demonstrated the DP1500i drill rig at the Donskoy Kamen and Yugvzrivprom operated Fedorovskoye sandstone quarry in the Rostov region. Equipped to deal with the sandstone application the DP1500i’s bits lasted 2.5 times longer, with the rig using less than half the fuel, and drilling twice the distance.
A series of benchmark drilling demonstrations of the Sandvik DP1500i rig were recently performed at the Fedorovskoye quarry in the Rostov region. These were organized by Sandvik Construction Russia and distributor Quarry Service, in order to measure the drill rigs performance on highly abrasive sandstone. The quarry is owned and operated by a local company, Donskoy Kamen, while a subcontractor, Yugvzrivprom, performs the necessary blasting work.
Issue 04 | 2014
Difficult material in high demand Although Donskoy Kamen is already familiar with the excellent performance of the DP1500i through a highly successful demonstration on granite, the company has been experiencing problems with its existing fleet of drill rigs on the sandstone found at the quarry. Its abrasiveness places greater demands on the rock tools, and uses more rig power resulting in excessive use of fuel. Hence Sandvik
www.advanced-mining.com

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY Construction and Quarry Service were asked to undertake a series of drilling tests to further demonstrate the efficiency and productivity of the Sandvik equipment. The material found at the Fedorovskoye quarry is the cause of problems experienced during drilling, but is a highly valuable commodity. The quarried rock is used as M1000 and M1200 aggregates, and is particularly sought after as it provides frost resistance up to temperatures of F300. Additionally as the sandstone aggregate is of such high quality, this allows construction companies to use sandstone instead of granite in many applications with the material becoming especially popular with road construction companies in Central and Southern Russia. #
It was not just drilling performance which impressed but also the efficiency of the DP1500i configurations. With a standard drill rig that delivers less power than the DP1500i, the bits have to be replaced every 300-350m (or 25-30 holes). If high quality rock tools are used then the bits may last 3040% longer. However, as the combination of Sandvik drill rig and rock tools showed, even more impressive levels can be experienced if the right rig is used in conjunction with a powerful top-hammer. In the case of the sandstone drilled at the Fedorovskoye quarry the 33 kW delivered by the Sandvik DP1500i was enough to extend the service life of bits by up to 2.5 longer.
More than double the performance When the drilling tests began the DP1500i was equipped with 102 mm bits, and after 20 hours of intensive operation drilled a total distance of 822m. This meant that the rig had doubled the performance which Donskoy Kamen had previously experienced. Next the drilling was performed with 127mm bits, with again the DP1500i displaying a remarkable penetration rate of 1-1.1 m/min. Finally, the engineers of Quarry Service installed 140mm drill bits and with this configuration the rig achieved a penetration rate of 0.7-0.8 m/min. The drilling specialists and quarry operators hence saw at first hand that the DP1500i is able to deliver exceptional performance levels using any of the Sandvik tools, whatever the diameter of hole drilled.

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY Fuel efficiency and extended bit life The demonstration of the DP1500i at the Fedorovskoye quarry was supervised by senior management from both Donskoy Kamen and Yugvzrivprom. The management teams noted that their current drill rigs were unable to match the DP1500i’spenetration rate due to the excessive friction of the bit, which limited drilling performance and resulted in higher fuel consumption and increased service costs. In effect the demonstration clearly showed that the DP1500i is able to drill twice the distance, use half the fuel with the drilling bits lasting 2.5 times longer.

BEUMER provides plants and systems for the transport, loading and filling of bulk material – with significantly less dust formation:

B
ulk material like building materials, coal, cereals, fodder or mineral compounds are often transported via motorways, railways, waterways or through nature reserves. The large quantities of dust generated during this process can pollute the environment considerably. Dust clouds can also occur during loading, filling and palletising. This not only creates considerable clean-up for the employees, but chemical industry products can also present a health hazard and cause dangerous reactions. With its conveying, loading, filling and palletising systems, BEUMER Group ensures minimal dust emission.
BEUMER Group is a world-leading systems provider for transporting, loading, filling and packaging bulk material. The BEUMER portfolio includes curved belt conveyors for fast and cost-efficient transport of large quantities of bulk material from the quarry or mine to the factory or port. The belt conveyors are able to navigate long distances, high angles of inclination and tight curve radii, and can be adapted individually to the belt or pipe conveyor bulk handling solutions. Depending on the customer‘s requirements,

BEUMER provides either troughed belt or pipe conveyor bulk handling solutions. Open troughed belt conveyors are recommended for larger throughputs, higher mass flows and wider curved radii. Closed Pipe Conveyors protect both transported items from environmental influences and the environment from falling items. Troughed belt conveyors can also be covered or encased to minimise dust formation during transport. This seal guarantees dust-free transport.

in the vehicle using the fill level meter. In order to balance out any minor positional deviations of the vehicle, the operator can move the bulk loading head laterally during placement. The bulk loading head is also available with an integrated compressed-air filter. This allows you to operate the centralised dedusting units independently from the dust transporting devices. The dust removed from the bulk transporter vehicle is fed again to the material flow during loading. The compressed-air filter consists of filter hoses which are positioned between the inner telescopic tube and the outer bellows. The suction is carried out by a fan fastened at the outside. The cleaning is carried out by timed compressed-air shocks.
BEUMER‘s portfolio also includes mechanical vertical conveyors such as belt bucket elevators. They are an essential production link in the cement industry. BEUMER reliably seals the shaft casings of these bucket elevators, which stops dust from escaping. Instead, the dust trickles into the bucket elevator boot that is equipped with a dynamic bottom. Wet and sticky material cannot accumulate but is fed back into the transport process.
Loading without spilling BEUMER Group has developed bulk loading heads for the quick and dust-free loading of bulk transporter vehicles. They are designed according to the double-wall system, where the material inlet and the dedusting unit are separated from each other. When the bulk loading head is placed on a filler neck, its sealing cone is lowered and the outlet spout opens simultaneously. The lowering level of the sealing cone is variable. You can adjust the fill level
Issue 04 | 2014
Dust-free loading of open vehicles BEUMER offers various types of telescopic loading systems for dust-free loading of open vehicles. With these systems, the bulk loading head is lowered to the floor of the vehicle and the material feed is switched on. A fill level switch in the lower dedusting hood is activated by the rising material. This causes the bulk loading head to be raised automatically. The edge of the dedusting hood always rests on the material cone while it rises, so that no dust can escape. The bellows, or the telescopic tubes for the dust extraction, are connected to a central dedusting air system. Corresponding devices or flow control gates transport the material to the system. The bulk loading heads can also be equipped with fill level indicators. Once the vehicle is loaded, they reliably turn off the material feed. Different types of fill level indicators are used depending on the properties of the material. Some of the criteria used to select the correct switch are bulk density, flow behaviour as well as product temperature.

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY With the BEUMER bulk loading head, bulk-transporter vehicles can be loaded quickly and without dust (Photo: BEUMER Group GmbH & Co. KG)
Mobile loaders for bulk transporter vehicles In the cement industry, high loading capacities are required. Stationary bulk loading heads are often not sufficient, especially if the bulk transporter vehicle is standing on a weighbridge and may not be moved during the loading process. It should be possible for the operator to move the bulk loading head to each filler neck of the vehicle. Depending on the properties of the materials to be loaded and the length of the vehicle, different sliding or swivelling loading system options are available. These mobile loading systems can be fitted with either one or two loading heads, depending on the space available. First, the bulk material needs to be filled in bags so that it can be palletised, packaged and sent to the customer. As a single-source provider, BEUMER Group offers an innovative solution with the BEUMER fillpac filling machine and provides equipment and systems for packaging lines. The new machine can be flexibly integrated with existing packaging lines and can be optimally adapted to the customer‘s situation. What makes the BEUMER fillpac
Issue 04 | 2014
unique is a specific weighing electronics which ensures the weight accuracy of the bags. Rejects caused by too high or too low filling weights can nearly be eliminated. The weighing unit communicates permanently with the filler neck via a specific software. The automatic bag weight adjustment determines the exact filling weight of the bags, thus enabling the exact degrees of filling during the filling process. The filling spout is equipped with a special hood that reduces dust emission to a minimum. There are also suction points on both sides in the area of the filling spout. The dust is sucked off directly where it builds up and fed back into the process. This allows for a practically dustfree filling of the bags. The three-position cylinder that regulates the coarse and fine flow is protected from dust, because it is positioned vertically and outside of the dirty area. The cylinder for bag discharging is also located in the dust-free zone above the filling spout. The paper, PE or PP bags are then stacked on pallets of different sizes in a flexible, precise and stable way. For this, BEUMER has developed the BEUMER paletpacÂŽ, a high capacity layer palletiser. If you want to avoid dust formation, the bags have to be handled very carefully. This is why BEUMER offers the palletiser with a clamp-type turning device or the newly developed twin-belt turning device. They position the filled bags quickly, ensuring their dimensional stability without any deformations. If required, BEUMER Group customer support can simply upgrade existing palletisers with the twin-belt turning device.

CHWENK Zement KG is replacing its old drag chain conveyor line with a modern Pipe Conveyor from BEUMER Group. Requiring a solution that would transport alternative fuels such as crushed plastic material, textiles and paper from the warehouse to the feeding system of the oven in their cement plant in Bernburg, Germany, this fully closed conveying system makes transporting bulk material more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Maintenance costs are also considerably lower and the system can be optimally adapted to the ambient conditions.
SCHWENK‘s product diversity and production capacity make the cement plant in Bernburg one of the largest and most efficient building material plants in Germany. The production of cement along the river Saale has a rich history due to the prevalence of high-quality deposits of limestone in this area. The plant has been in existence since 1960. SCHWENK took over the plant in 1990 and tore down the existing systems to build an entirely new plant.
Issue 04 | 2014
Today, SCHWENK‘s product portfolio includes a wide range of efficient, specialised cement marked by consistently high quality. The company produces the ideal product using modern mixing technology, as required for tunnel, road and well construction, as well as for geothermal and environment engineering.

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY A crane discharges the substitute fuel into the discharge bunkers in the storehouse (Photo: BEUMER Group GmbH & Co. KG)
Heat-intensive processes For the manufacturing of cement, limestone is quarried, crushed and homogenised with additional raw materials. Belt conveyors then transport the crushed material with other materials from the blending bed to the plant. It is ground to the necessary grain size in the raw mills and then dried. The raw meal is then homogenised and temporarily stored in large silos. To obtain Portland cement clinker, a coarse intermediate product, the raw meal is first transported into the cyclone preheater, then into the calcinator, both powered by alternative fuels. The limestone portion of the raw meal is deacidified at temperatures of over 950 degrees Celsius. The material then moves into the rotary kiln where it is burned at temperatures of approx. 1,450 degrees Celsius.
continuous conveyors are mounted to an endless chain, transporting the bulk material in a trough. „We had been using this system for more than ten years. This meant that we had to put more and more maintenance work into it“, says Dirk Fabian, production manager at SCHWENK in Bernburg. Another problem: after further development of the dosing technology, the drag chain conveyor was no longer able to transport enough bulk material, with a density of only 0.2 tons per cubic metre, to the weigh feeders (and thus to the main burner). „We were looking for an alternative solution that would be ecological as well as low in maintenance“, explains Dirk Fabian. In addition, the new conveyor should also be optimally adapted to the curved routing in the plant.
Up until now, SCHWENK relied on a drag chain conveyor line for transporting the fuels from the storehouse to the feeding systems of its main burner. The baffle plates on these mechanical

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY Comprehensive expertise, optimum support For the building material manufacturer, BEUMER Group was their first choice supplier of the optimal conveying technology. SCHWENK has a long-standing and close partnership with BEUMER as an internationally operating system supplier. BEUMER has provided SCHWENK Putztechnik GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in Ulm in southern Germany, with several BEUMER paletpac® high-capacity layer palletisers, equipped with the newly developed twin-belt turning device. BEUMER has been well-established in the building industry for nearly 80 years as a supplier of conveying technology solutions. BEUMER has bundled its comprehensive expertise in the building material industry and established different Centers of Competence, in order to offer optimal support for global building material manufacturers by offering single-source solutions. The „Pipe Conveyor“ segment is one such Center of Competence. These centers are in charge of worldwide project management and sales. They collect and process the expertise from the individual local group companies and pass it on to the global Group experts in each respective field.

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY High level of environmental protection, low level of maintenance „Together with the management team in Bernburg, we developed a solution that is tailored exactly to match SCHWENK‘s requirements“, says Michal Mikulec, managing director at BEUMER Group Czech Republic a.s. and supervisor for this project. Our first idea was to combine a new drag chain conveyor with several open belt conveyors, but it was quickly abandoned. It became apparent that a Pipe Conveyor was the best solution offering environmental protection and low maintenance. „Its closed design protects the environment from transported goods falling down. Another advantage is the lack of dust development on the running line“, explains Michal Mikulec. These conveyors offer many other advantages. They are able to navigate long distances and tight curve radii. Due to their ability to negotiate curves, considerably less transfer towers are required compared to other belt conveyors. This results in substantial cost savings for the customer and delivery of a system customised for individual routing. BEUMER Group supplied and installed a system with a diameter of 200 millimetres and a length of 230 metres. It conveys up to 15 tons of material per hour. BEUMER was also responsible for the design of the system and the entire steel structure.
Issue 04 | 2014
Durable conveyor belts guaranteeing tensile strength are used in the SCHWENK solution. „To find the ideal belt version for SCHWENK, we calculated the tractive forces as well as the forces that occur during acceleration and deceleration – always considering the net weight of the belt and the transported item“, reports Michal Mikulec. The engineers also precalculated the belt positions in different curve radii for the empty and loaded belt. Another system advantage is the reduced noise emission of the Pipe Conveyors. „Special idlers as well as low-noise bearings and electric motors work very quietly. This improves the quality of our employees‘ day-to-day work environment and ensures the people living near the plant are not disturbed“, says Dirk Fabian.

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY Trouble-free operation Cranes pick up the treated substitute fuels in the storehouse and unload them into the discharge bunker with the discharge system. From here, the chain belt conveyor continually transports the material to the new Pipe Conveyor that then transports it to the weigh feeders of the main burner. BEUMER was able to optimally customise the routing of the conveyor to the plant. Another requirement met by the experts: no supports underneath the Pipe Conveyor that would otherwise obstruct vehicles. This is why the technicians mounted the first support directly to the storehouse. The conveyor take-up system was designed by BEUMER as a take-up tower. It is located right next to the feeding station. It took only eight months from the time the contract was awarded until commissioning of the new system in February 2014. „We have been working with the BEUMER system for several months now“, says Dirk Fabian. „We are very satisfied. It is very robust and we no longer have any failures.“

The new Wirtgen Surface Miner 2200 SM 3.8 :
More coal for the customer
Wirtgen GmbH Windhagen | Germany

The first Wirtgen 2200 SM 3.8 surface miner is being used in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. With immediate effect, this newly advanced surface miner is replacing the conventional mining equipment used locally. Wirtgen experts are providing support for the project.
Project support from A to Z
Good project planning is crucial
The Yihua Xinjiang Wucaiwan coal mine is situated in the north-west of China near the borders with Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Contractor Xinjiang Jianyun Engineering Co. Ltd. has been mining coal here for about one-and-a-half years, making use of the eco-friendly surface mining technology. Previously, the sought-after fossil fuel was mined using conventional methods, i.e. drilling and blasting. However, this often resulted in fires in the mine, as the coal was highly flammable at the open coal faces damaged by blasting. In order to increase safety at the mine, the mine operator decided to introduce surface mining as the new mining method. This move simultaneously boosted the cost effectiveness and quality of mining.
However, simply choosing the right machines for the specified mining output is not the sole criterion when planning mining projects. Factors such as the geological properties of the area, sedimentation and on-site logistical conditions are also key factors. This is where expertise and best-practise experience are called for – and with more than 30 years of experience in surface mining, these are qualities that Wirtgen can contribute to every project. „The Wirtgen specialists provided us with in-depth advice right from the start and assisted us in developing the ideal solution,“ said Chen Jianyun.

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY The owner of Xinjiang Jianyun Engineering Co. Ltd. values the partnership-based cooperation and the reliability of the surface miner. He and Wirtgen first set out the requirements in preliminary talks. The area being mined is 2 x 300 x 35 m so manoeuvrability was the key factor for the machine in question. Also, the operator wanted to increase production from 3,000 t to 7,000 t per day. This proved to be the only way to meet the enormous demand from the main customers, who operate a cogeneration plant and a fertilizer plant that is currently undergoing construction. What‘s more, the coal is extremely fragile and finegrained. Consequently, it produces a great deal of dust. Various requirements on the gradation of the cut material and the coal seam (with a thickness ranging from 1.3 to 10.63 m) had to be taken into consideration during the planning stage. „Once we‘d been apprised of the underlying conditions, we advised our customer to use the new 2200 SM 3.8 surface miner. Though based on the same machine concept as the 2200 SM/3800, its production capacity is approximately 25 % higher and the specific fuel consumption approximately 15 % lower,“ explained Bernhard Schimm, Manager of the Mining Division of Wirtgen GmbH. The newly advanced machine selectively mines soft rock, achieving a maximum
in performance and cost efficiency. „We scrutinized the results of tests with the prototype of the new 3.8 generation in an Indian coal mine and concluded that the 2200 SM 3.8 ideally fulfils our requirements,“ said Chen Jianyun.
Selective mining: Top quality with maximum output The centerpiece of the compact, yet powerful 2200 SM 3.8 is the 3.8-m-wide cutting drum which offers numerous innovative features. It cuts coal or salt with unconfined compressive strengths of up to 35 MPa and deposits the material in three windrows behind the machine. This results in maximum cutting performance with optimum utilization of the engine capacity. Other benefits are its low fuel consumption, the optimized use of cutting tools and minimized content of fines due to the gentle material transport system. The modified drum speed combined with a reduced cutting depth and travel speed enabled the grain size distribution to be additionally optimized on site and the fines content to be reduced by a further 10 %. Two side plates which can be raised and lowered hydraulically reliably seal the cutting drum. With the drum effectively sealed, the formation of dust during milling is reduced considerably. Furthermore, the miner is also equipped with an additional dust protection plate for this application.

TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY The 2200 SM 3.8 has a cutting width of 3.8 m and a cutting depth of up to 350 mm. (Foto: Wirtgen GmbH)
The effectiveness of these measures to reduce the formation of dust was already evident during the six-day practical test. The mechanical cutting drum drive system with its three power belts also proved highly efficient on the test site. The virtually loss-free transfer of power ensures maximum efficiency and tremendous daily output rates combined with simple maintenance. Maximum output during selective mining of the coal seam is ensured by three material discharge openings in the scraper plate that allow large quantities of cut rock to be deposited as a windrow. Wheeled loaders subsequently load the material onto trucks independently of the cutting process.
24/7 On-site service Surface miners are usually in operation around the clock. In Zhundong coal field, the 2200 SM 3.8 works 24 hours a day for 330 days in a year. Consequently, a reliable supply with original parts and the deployment of excellently trained Wirtgen service engineers are extremely important, as Chen Jianyun is fully aware: „Every minute that the surface miner is not working costs money and minimizes our profit. The knowledge that we could always rely on support from Wirtgen was a key factor in our choice of partner.“
Saving time when it becomes critical Operating in the confined space of the mine, the 2200 SM 3.8 truly came into its own. The large steering angle of the smooth hydraulically adjustable all-track steering results in a turning radius of just 2.5 m. The crab steering mode allows rapid manoeuvring. Meanwhile, the large ground clearance with individually height-adjustable crawler tracks allows operation on uneven terrain and reversing. What‘s more, the selectable hydraulic differential lock ensures optimum traction on any surface. The enormous gradability and longitudinal slope of the surface miner allow it to operate in difficult peripheral areas and to produce separate access roads and ramps. The 2200 SM 3.8 is thus also a valuable asset for job site routing.

The world`s largest iron ore deposits are to be found in Australia. Thanks to the mobile combination of plants from Kleemann, up to 600 tons of iron ore are processed per hour in the „Ridges Iron Ore Project“ in the Kimberley region. The Ridges Iron Ore Project: more than 67 million tons of iron ore remain untapped in this mine in Western Australia. In repsonse to the rising demand of steel worldwide, it is now being mined at full steam. Since the mine was opened in July 2011, the Kimberley Metals Group (KMG) has extracted up 1.5 million tons of iron ore per year here. The subcontractor SJ Crushing was hired to process the material for the Australian ore producer.

NEWS & REPORTS Performance and Fuel Efficiency A proven system of Caterpillar developed electronic, fuel, air, and after-treatment technologies ensure that emissions control is transparent to the operator, does not interrupt machine operation, and promotes reliability, high productivity, and low operating costs. With a net rating of 230 horsepower (171 kW), the new 950M produces 9 percent more power than its K-Series counterpart, and the 962M, rated at 250 horsepower (186 kW), has 13 percent more power. Peak torque is up an average 18 percent for the new models, which means more useable power at the wheels. In addition, the new, productive Economy Mode automatically senses powertrain load and adjusts engine speed and torque for optimum performance and fuel efficiency. The 950M and 962M use a new five-speed Cat powershift transmission featuring a lock-up clutch torque converter with lock-to-lock shifting (transmission gear remains locked during gear shifts), as well as the Cat single clutch speed shift system (which keeps the forward/ reverse clutch engaged during gear shifts). Auto-shift features control the automatic shifting of the transmission and engagement of the lock up clutch. These two features working together maintain more effective and efficient torque flow through the transmission during gear changes, especially valuable when accelerating up ramps.
Issue 04 | 2014
The redesigned axles feature on-the-go disc-type differential locks to improve tractive ability in these applications thereby increasing productivity. These models come standard with front axle differential locks which are manually activated by a switch on the floor. Optional fully automatic front and rear axle differential locks operate by measuring differences in axle speeds and require no operator intervention to activate. These disctype differential locks will reduce tire scuffing compared to other traction aids further reducing operating costs for customers. These machines have a new external caliper disc parking brake mounted to the input shaft of the front axle. Since they are external, they do not have the inefficiencies of enclosed, wet parking brakes due to brake discs running in oil nor is there any oil to change reducing fuel and maintenance costs. External caliper parking brakes are easily accessible for inspection and service.
Hydraulic Refinement The 950M and 962M hydraulic systems have significant design changes and customer value improvements. The main hydraulic valve is now a mono-block with an integrated ride control section. The mono-block design reduces weight, has forty percent fewer leak points and is common across all M Series models. Auxiliary third and
www.advanced-mining.com
47
NEWS & REPORTS fourth hydraulic functions can be easily added at the factory or in the field with the addition of a second remote valve. The new ride control system now has two accumulators enabling it to be more effective over a greater payload range, increasing productivity and operator efficiency due to a better ride. Hydraulic system components on the 950M and 962M are protected by full flow and kidney-loop filtration. A filter in the hydraulic tank return line filters all of the oil returning to the tank. There is also a case drain screen for additional protection and finally, a separate kidney-loop filter with a finer micron rating which continuously filters smaller particles out of the system. This multilevel design ensures the hydraulic oil is clean and thoroughly protects the rest of the hydraulic system from contamination. A new thermal bypass valve has been added to improve hydraulic system warm-up.
Operator Comfort and Efficiency Improving operator efficiency remains a key design goal for the 950M and 962M. Ensuring operators are safe, confident in the control of their machines, have a clean, comfortable and quiet operating environment with controls that are intuitive and low effort all contribute to lower operator fatigue and better performance.
Issue 04 | 2014
In the cab, the new electro-hydraulic joystick steering is also available on the 950M and 962M featuring speed sensing force feedback for unparalleled comfort and control. A new multipurpose color touch screen display dramatically simplifies the operator interface with machine controls, rear vision camera and the new fully integrated Cat Production Measurement system. Intuitive navigation with in-language text enables operators to modify certain machine operating parameters and monitor machine conditions at the touch of their fingers. Sealed against moisture and dirt, the centralized switch panel with LED’s provides reliability and ready access to frequently required functions, even while wearing gloves. The ISO symbols located on each membrane switch are molded all the way through to ensure the image will not wear off over time. The M Series maintains the “help feature which explains the function of each membrane switch. Focusing on operator efficiency, the control panel has been streamlined to include easy to reach highly utilized machine controls. The touch screen display enables the relocation of some expanded functions while eliminating the need for a second switch panel for further simplicity and easy machine operation.

ContiTech: ContiTech and Techmi built Europe’s longest conveyor for French cement factory
• Conveyor belt installed across a distance of 6.2 km • Techmi’s innovations permit to put the return belt aside the carrying belt • Splicing by skilled ContiTech service team

Hanover/Montalieu, Nov. 2014. Faster, longer, more innovative: When it comes to peak performances, ContiTech knows a thing or two – and now has another achievement to add to its portfolio together with its partner Techmi. The longest conveyor belt in Europe recently went into operation at a cement factory in Montalieu, France. The community of Montalieu lies in eastern France between Lyon and Geneva. It’s a small town located on the banks of the Rhône and home to the cement plant Vicat. To bring in limestone from the quarry 6.2 km away, Vicat required a cost-effective solution and launched a project to realise its transport needs by conveyor belt. They engaged Techmi, the French expert in bulk handling to build up the entire conveyor system. Techmi compiled in 2012

a quotation including specific requirements concerning the belt. In 2013, ContiTech beat a large number of other bidders to the contract and so became Techmi’s strategic partner. “Requirements for this conveyor belt are tough, especially for return solution,” reports Stefan Hoheisel, Segment Leader for Industry at the Conveyor Belt Group.

Convincing materials expertise
The result of the project is something to be proud of: The endless belt is about 13 km long and does a twist and turn on the head and tail of the system to run parallel to the loaded belt on the return. “For Vicat and Techmi the classic return solution wasn’t really an option on this occasion. The innovative turn solution means we now have a base construction which is not higher than just 80 cm,” explains Nicolas Raphaël, team leader of the French conveyor belt team. Another advantage is that limestone residues remain on the returning belt rather than falling underneath it. This makes the system considerably easier to clean and is an advantage not just for Vicat but also for the environment.
“We opted to work with ContiTech for a number of different reasons,” explains Techmi’s owner René Brunone. “ContiTech is a convincing partner because it has many years of practical experience with conveyor belts that negotiate bends and delivers high-quality and eco-friendly products. In addition, they were able to manufacture the belt very quickly, which also impressed us.” The belt as well as the steel cords for the carcass were produced by ContiTech Imas in Volos, Greece. “It’s basically a STAHLCORD ST1000-5+5 X, a steel cable conveyor that’s resistant to abrasion, weather and corrosion. It’s also thermally stable, highly durable and low maintenance,” explains Raphaël. ContiTech produced and delivered it within the space of just five weeks, which

is extremely competitive compared to usual production time. In a first step, 13 rolls of one kilometre weighing 20 tonnes each were shipped from Volos to Fos-sur-Mer on the French Mediterranean coast. From there they were transported in a spectacular heavy duty truck convoy over 360 km to Montalieu. In Montalieu the team from ContiTech France and the service team from HQ in Northeim, Germany, were on site to assemble the belt. “We did the job in two stages and spent a total of two months on location,” says Jan Poppe, Head of Field Service International. Together, the team spliced the 13 sections of belt to each other – in the middle of winter, no less. The 250 tons conveyor belt is now in operation, powered by three electric motors delivering 250 kW each. In normal conditions, the belt can transport up to 700 tons of limestone an hour. At maximum capacity, it can shift as much as 1,000 tons. The belt has officially been in operation since mid October. “We’re more than happy with the way this project has turned out. With Techmi and ContiTech, we had two extremely competent partners by our side,” says M. Eric Galloy, project manager at Vicat.

NEWS & REPORTS ContiTech AG
STAHLCORD® Barrier: New Conveyor Belt Transverse Reinforcement Increases Service Life for Heavy Work
• STAHLCORD® Barrier is two to three times more resistant to impacts than classic steel cord conveyor belts • New transverse reinforcement reliably prevents impact breaks and longitudinal slitting in conveyor belts • Less downtime for more reliable and efficient equipment operation
Hanover, October 2014. ContiTech has developed the steel cable conveyor belt STAHLCORD® Barrier for less conveyor belt damage and a long service life in opencast mining. With its new sturdy steel transverse reinforcement in the top cover, the conveyor belt is two to three times more resistant to impact breaks than conventional steel cord conveyor belts without transverse reinforcement. „These properties make the belt ideal for transporting coarse and sharpedged materials in opencast mining,“ Dr. Andrey Minkin, application engineer at the ContiTech Conveyor Belt Group, points out. The rough working conditions in opencast mining place high demands on steel cord conveyor belts. Impact breaks occur on the conveyor belts time and again, causing damage to the steel cords in the belts. So-called transverse reinforcements offer more safety and stability. The STAHLCORD® Barrier is a steel cord conveyor belt with a rubber surface on the top cover, in which thin steel cords run closely together at right angles to the direction of travel of the conveyor belt. They protect the steel cords in the belt carcass and prevent impact breaks and longitudinal slitting in the conveyor belt. Thanks to low reference elongation and the short takeup linked to this, STAHLCORD® Barrier is ideal for use as an equipment belt in mining machinery or as a short- to medium-length device-related bench conveyor belt, for instance. It is also suitable for working environments where steel cord conveyor belts have to withstand impacts from coarse stone, as is the case with belt conveyors with several feeding points. „With the STAHLCORD® Barrier, we are now setting new standards,“ Dr. Minkin explains. „The increased resistance to impact breaks makes belt slitting practically impossible.“ Further advantages of the new steel cord conveyor belt are its outstanding troughability in accordance with ISO 703:2007 and a high ply adhesion in accordance with ISO 15236. The belt is only five percent heavier than a classic steel cable conveyor belt without transverse reinforcement.

ContiTech used corporate synergy effects for the development of the STAHLCORD® Barrier and the new transverse reinforcement, which means it meets the high standards required by the automotive sector. „Our customers benefit directly from this development knowhow – in the form of long service lives and reliable and low-downtime operation of heavy-duty conveyor belts,“ Dr. Minkin continues.

Hanover, November 17, 2014. The Benecke-Kaliko Group in Hanover, Germany, is expanding production of foils for car interiors in Southern and Eastern Europe. The company acquired two sites from the Belgian Mecaseat Group, which also owns French decorative foil producer Griffine Enduction. Retroactively effective from November 1, 2014, Mecaseat‘s Spanish company Gorvi S.A. in Pamplona and Polish company Mecapol in Wągrowiec will become 100% members of the Benecke-Kaliko Group. Both locations employ a total of 150 employees. Benecke-Kaliko so far has four plants across the world, employing some 2,100 people. The fifth global plant is being built in China. All jobs will be maintained. “We didn‘t just want to buy the business, but also manufacturing capacities,“ says Chairman of the Executive Board Dr. Dirk Leiß. “The new plants are clearly following the strategic direction of the company. With access to the market in Southern Europe, we are sending a clear signal for further growth with French and Spanish manufacturers. In the future we will also be able to offer our customers an additional price segment, particularly for models that are in demand in the booming small car segment.“ Gorvi in Spain supplies customers in Spain, France and North Africa. Mecapol supplies Eastern European and Russian customers with foils and upholstery materials. „This acquisition also secures new production capacities, which will relieve the pressure on current locations,“ says Dr. Leiß. With this acquisition, Benecke-Kaliko will also get access to the industrial sector and supply upholstery materials for the furniture industry. Benecke-Kaliko AG, that belongs to the division ContiTech of the Continental AG, operates four plants worldwide in China, Germany, and Mexico. The company posted sales of €392 million in 2013.

Bauma China 2014
At this year‘s Bauma China from 25 to 28 November 2014 Rockster presented its most compact line, the R700S including screen box and return belt. Contrary to the Chinese trend of large machines, Rockster wants to offer economically and ecologically valuable solutions. The output of this compact crusher of about 150t / h thus meets the expectations of many potential users without having to invest in a large plant.
Bauma China 2014 Many visitors were surprised that high class quality recycled materials can be produced in such a confined space. That the Bauma China already became an internationally recognized fair, showed the high number of visitors from the rest of Asia, and South America.
As Rockster is currently building up an extensive dealer network in China, the Bauma was used to create a new contractual basis for cooperation with 3 further dealers.

Petra-Trans with new R700S:
Hands-on mentality made the decision
Maximum reliability on each operation is the philosophy of family Drucker and of Rockster Recycler. The impactor R700S and its team behind have convinced the owner of Petra Trans. The family company “Petra Trans”, situated in Lower Austria, is a strong transport and demolition business and owns a remarkable fleet of trucks and construction machines: 8 excavators, 2 wheel loaders, 6 trucks in various sizes, a variety of smaller machines like vibratory plates, rollers or concrete cutting machines, and since the end of August 2014, a new Rockster R700S Impact crusher. On the company grounds covering a surface area of 7,000 square meters any debris can be delivered and will be recycled in accordance with strict guidelines for commercial waste collectors and processors.

Extension of the contractors business Due to increasing demand of recycled material or crushed natural stone like granite, Petra Trans decided to buy a crusher instead of further renting one. After several tests, Petra and Rainer Drucker finally bought Rockster‘s most compact crusher in the portfolio, the impactor R700S with screen box and return belt. „A transport weight under 24 tons was very important for us, because we can transport the crusher with our own loaders and so we are very flexible. With the screen box, we can also produce very fine quality grain, which often is essential for customers,“ says Rainer Drucker. Final concrete grain is mainly used for substructure with a size of 0-63mm diameter, for finegrading they screen the material to 0-32mm. The most favourite final materials of Petra Trans customers are RAP with 0-22mm or 0-16mm.

Minimum transportation costs and JustIn-Time Processing The processing of natural stone is a further business of Petra Trans. Only 8 km from the company premises there’s located a granite quarry. From this quarry they buy granite with 120-150mm diameter and crush it on demand. „The transport costs are minimal and we do not produce much material stockpiled, but crush the required quantity in the desired grain size just when it’s needed. Very popular is granite with a diameter from 0-4 mm, used as screened
sand, 4-8mm grain for paving and of course the 0-32mm granite grain for substructures and fine-grading at paving, street or road construction,“ says Petra Drucker.

R1100D in Denmark: New Recycling Yard – New Crushing Plant
Rockster impact crusher R1100D convinced the owners of new recycling center in Esbjerg (Denmark), especially with high output and high-quality final grain. The brothers Christensen from Tjæreborg in Denmark opened a new recycling center in Esbjerg this year, where they mainly recycle asphalt, concrete, bricks and other construction debris. They have been active in the recycling business for a long time and have experience in mobile crushing plants. Lately they weren’t satisfied with the output of their old jaw crusher and separate screening plant anymore, as they could only produce about 400 tons per 8-hour workday of the most popular grain with a diameter of 0-32mm. The demonstration convinced Rockster‘s Danish distributor, Meldgaard Handel A / S from Aabenraa, is a long time business partner of Christensen and presented the Rockster R1100D. „I suggested that we demonstrate the impact crusher R1100D with a screen box and return belt on their recycling yard, because I was personally completely convinced that exactly this impact crusher would be perfect for their requirements,“ says sales manager Klaus Meldgaard. And Meldgaard had not promised too much with an increase of final material of more than 100%. Already on the first day 900 tonnes were reached and already on day 2 they crushed 1,200 tonnes of final material 0/32mm. But above all the entrepreneurs were immediately very satisfied with the quality of the crushed grain: „The high quality cubic 0/32 mm material

The Rockster screening system replaces the screening plant The Rockster crushing plants can be supplemented with a screening system consisting of screenbox and return belt, and makes crushing and screening possible on one mobile plant. Brothers Christensen can use it to crush the 0/32 grain directly, saving a further screening plant, as well as re-loading and crushing of oversized material. Including screenbox and return belt the R11000D weighs not even 40 tonnes and can be easily transported without special permits. The continuous variable rotor speed, good maintenance access and ease of use of the Rockster crusher were some more purchase criteria for Christensen.

NEWS & REPORTS Metso Mining and Construction
Metso‘s new Barmac VSI Orange Series Rotor adds operational uptime and secures quick parts change Operational uptime plays a key role in today‘s crushing operations, where maximizing productivity and reducing the cost per ton are paramount. To meet these challenges, Metso has developed the new Orange Series Rotor for vertical shaft impact (VSI) crushers. With the new rotors, productive uptime can be increased substantially through longer parts lifetime and faster service. The new Metso Orange Series Rotor components have been reconfigured with a built-in possibility for easy interchange, thus maximizing wear life. The change-out of primary components through the service door has also been improved. With the Orange rotors, maintenance is made easy by reducing the total number of wear parts by 30% and the total number of components by 25%. This is achieved by integrating several components and using less fixing points. Hard-facing during maintenance is no longer required.
Significant increase in wear parts life Tuomas Takalo, Metso‘s Product Manager for Barmac VSI crushers, describes the increase in wear parts life achieved with the Orange rotor as significant: „We have tested the new primary components in real quarry operations, achieving in most cases greatly enhanced wear life. For example, the tip life was increased by 3050%.“
Issue 04 | 2014
Metso‘s new Orange rotor maximizes productivity in two ways: extending wear parts lifetime and reducing the time required for parts changes. (Photo: Metso)
„In quarry operations, the extended lifetime will provide the operator significantly increased operational uptime,“ he adds. „Fewer intervals between wear parts changes will clearly increase the total capacities produced.“
Parts change time decreases greatly The change-out of primary components for the Orange rotor through the service door has been improved greatly.

NEWS & REPORTS Metso Mining and Construction
Metso‘s new Nordberg C130 jaw crusher offers a 20% increase in cavity volume
Nordberg C130 can process more rock in the crushing process, thanks to the larger cavity volume delivering higher production in high-capacity primary crushing in demanding quarrying and mining applications. The cavity volume of a jaw crusher has a big impact on the efficiency of the crusher. The Nordberg C130 jaw crusher, introduced by Metso, has a 21% larger cavity volume in comparison to previous models in this size class. The larger cavity volume means that more rock or ore is in the crushing process at one time. The increased volume combined with the extra large feed opening ensures highcapacity primary crushing in all demanding quarrying and mining applications.
Issue 04 | 2014
The introduction of the Nordberg C130 jaw crusher continues the renewal of Metso‘s proven, mid-size and large jaw crushers. Prior to the launch of Nordberg C130, Metso launched the all-new Nordberg C120 and C150 jaw crushers.

NEWS & REPORTS
The C130 options include e.g. safe, easy-to-open flywheel guards and an integrated motor bed with electric drive (Photo: Metso)
The new C130 is a 40-tonne jaw crusher in terms of operating weight and features the famous pinned and bolted design for reliability, long life and easy service. Reliability, crushing efficiency in stationary and mobile applications, and uncompromising safety and ease of use have been the key parameters while designing this jaw novelty. „Our C130 really stands out of the crowd with its bigger cavity volume. In fact, the cavity is larger in all three dimensions: deeper, wider and longer. Consequently, the new cavity can process over 20% more material increasing crushing capacity significantly, comments Ilkka Somero, Metso‘s Product Manager for jaw crushers.
Issue 04 | 2014
Large feed opening saves blasting costs The large, 1300 x 1000 mm (39“ x 51“) feed opening of the C130 jaw crusher is able to process even the coarsest feed and maintain a trouble-free material flow through the crusher. This results in savings in blasting costs and allows the processing of coarser feed at the primary stage. „This new design combined with a 160 kW (200 hp) power range, a small nip angle and excellent kinematics ensures aggressive crushing along the whole length of the crusher cavity,“ Ilkka Somero adds. Thanks to the compact design, older crusher models can be easily replaced with the C130. The pinned and bolted design also makes it possible to disassemble the C130 and transport it even to the deepest underground mines.

Metso introduces the world‘s largest cone crusher, MP2500, to respond to the mining industry‘s efficiency challenge
Metso introduces the world‘s largest cone crusher, MP2500, to respond to the mining industry‘s efficiency challenge. (Photo: Metso)
The first MP2500 cone crusher will be operational at First Quantum Minerals Ltd Sentinel mine in Zambia early 2015. The global mining industry is striving to develop more energy and cost efficient technologies for minerals processing. As ore grades decline, more and more ore needs to be processed to obtain the same amount of the valuable mineral and to meet production targets. This equation often results in increased processing costs and can prove problematic for miners. Metso is responding to the customer challenge by developing larger and more energy efficient equipment for minerals processing. One result of this work, the world‘s largest cone crushers, the MP2500, will be shipped to First Quantum Minerals Ltd (FQML) Sentinel Mine in Zambia. The crushers will be fully operational in early 2015. The crusher order, worth more than EUR 10 million, was booked in Metso‘s orders received in Q1 2013.
Issue 04 | 2014
Efficient crushing saves energy MP2500_2.jpgThe MP2500 was selected for Sentinel because it can process large volumes of rock as single machine. It saves costs as fewer crushers, related infrastructure and maintenance are needed for achieving the same or increased amount of production. Because the MP2500 crusher has the largest feed opening ever made, it can crush bigger chunks of rock. Its ability to crush rock further than the traditional crushers decreases energy consumption in the later parts of the process.

Less equipment leads to improved safety The development of the MP2500 cone crusher resulted in innovations in the area of health and safety, many based on discussions with FQML. The most important result is based on the fact that there is less equipment installed at the mine site thus generating less need for maintenance and limiting the number of times personnel has to conduct work at any single equipment.
The MP2500 cone crusher is designed for use in secondary and tertiary crushing. It links easily with other Metso products to create a simplified, cost effective process flow for high production sites. Larger equipment reduces the number of crushers to install since there is more throughput from each crusher. To duplicate the performance of two (2) MP2500‘s would require four (4) smaller MP1250‘s and all associated infrastructure.
Issue 04 | 2014
Serviceability and ease of maintenance was also a focus during the design. Since the part was so large, Metso developed a new method to remove the socket which eliminates heating of the part in a difficult working space. This method also eliminates process variables associated with socket removal and reduces the overall stress on both the socket and main shaft. Metso has a patent pending for this new concept. Metso also refined the existing jackbolt locknut design to reduce the amount of manual work and replaced it with hydraulics to simplify the same work.

NEWS & REPORTS Metso is assisting Sentinel mine to guarantee the efficient operation of the new MP2500 by stationing fulltime field service engineers on-site for one year after commissioning and by stocking critical spare parts in Metso‘s distribution center in South Africa as well on-site. First Quantum Minerals Ltd. is an established and rapidly growing mining and metals company operating seven mines and developing five projects worldwide, currently producing copper, nickel, gold, zinc, and platinum group elements. In addition, FQML is developing projects in Zambia, Panama and Peru that when complete, will increase their annual copper production capacity to more than 1.3 million tonnes per annum.

NEWS & REPORTS Energy efficient overload protection
Easy and Safe maintenance
The CI531 and CI532 Prisec TM 3 are equipped with an infinite hydraulic curtain adjustment combined with a brake positioning system which relieves pressure, and setting, when un-crushable objects enter the crusher. No hydraulic power is required during normal operation, thus saving on operating power and reducing total power consumption. Both first and second curtains are infinitely adjustable via the Sandvik’s patented adjustment / braking system which is located on the cross beams of the crusher. This system gives hydraulic adjustment of both curtains, via the standard supply electric hydraulic power pack.
A unique key safety interlock system ensures safe maintenance of the crusher and prevents accidental opening of the crusher and inspection doors even in multiple installations. It also allows the ability to raise curtains during operation without stopping the crusher to clear blockages, and re-set automatically to operating setting. This maximizes uptime and reduces the need for heavy lifting gear and operator / maintenance intervention, thereby reducing further Health & Safety risks.
Maximum uptime, Maximum breakage Dealing with crusher blockages Crusher blockages have always historically been a problem, especially when operating in a primary mode. Removal of the blockage, with the combined downtime and health and safety risks encountered, are now eliminated with the new generation Prisec TM 3 crusher. Due to the exceptional features of the crushers no stopping of the crusher is necessary, with no operator intervention inside the crusher, no heavy lifting gear required, all resulting in maximum uptime and reduced health and safety problems.
Rotor and hammer design The rotor and hammers can be considered as the heart of the crusher; this is why those used on the Prisec TM 3 range are both robust and efficient. Rotors have superior weight and design, essential for delivering the high inertia required for optimum crusher performance, thus ensuring stability and smooth operation during production. The unique “banana” shaped self-sharpening hammer design helps to keep the contact heads sharper during operation, resulting in more effective shearing of the incoming material, and hence improved production.

T
he popular 42-tonne truck from the Atlas Copco Minetruck range looks set to embark on another successful journey following a major upgrade for increased productivity, safety and sustainability.
Atlas Copco’s Minetruck MT42 was introduced to the market in 2009, and has since been a faithful workhorse for mines around the world. Now a range of new improvements has given this 42-tonne capacity vehicle the means to beat its own high productivity record.

The most striking upgrades are a newly designed box with an innovative tailgate solution and a new engine alternative fulfilling engine emission regulations.
Tier 4 final engine
New box with tailgate The new box is made of high strength steel. It has the same physical envelope size as the previous model, but with a reduced dump height. The geometry is new with optimized internal plate angles, making it easier for material to be released. In addition, the new box is equipped with an innovative tailgate, which acts as a spill guard. The tailgate folds down automatically behind the box before dumping without

The new engine alternative for Minetruck MT42, the Cummins QSX15, meets the exhaust emission requirements of both EPA Tier 4 final and EU Stage IV, moving forward to meet near-zero emission levels. Compared to Tier 3 emission levels the new engine represents a 90 percent reduction for both PM (particulate matter) and NOx (nitrogen oxides). The engine installation is fully integrated into the design of the Minetruck MT42 and the Atlas Copco’s Rig Control System, RCS. As an example, the status of the particulate filter and the level of the diesel exhaust fluid tank can be monitored on the display in the cabin.

NEWS & REPORTS The engine alternative is only suitable for markets with supply of Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD), and low ash engine oil.
Retarder for higher speed The Minetruck MT42 is also prepared for an optional electromagnetic retarder braking system. When hauling downhill, the retarder creates resistance and retardation, providing wear-free braking. Under the right conditions it can also allow for a higher speed, resulting in increased productivity. This solution can be especially useful in applications with a high degree of haulage downhill with load, such as haulage of waste rock fill or in cut and fill applications. “All these new features make this truck even better when it comes to productivity, safety, reliability and sustainability”, says Marcus Lundbergh, Product Manager at Atlas Copco. “It’s all about moving as much ore as possible in a safe and controlled manner and the upgraded Minetruck MT42 is unmatched in doing that.”

Increased safety for surface drillers with Atlas Copco’s new protective guard
A
tlas Copco has introduced a new protective guard for its surface drill rigs to give operators added protection from moving parts.
Issue 04 | 2014

NEWS & REPORTS The risk of working close to moving parts on any machine is obvious, and most operators around the world are required to follow strict safety regulations. Despite this, however, accidents still occur. At Atlas Copco, safety is a priority issue and the company is committed to ensuring that its products are as safe as possible. In line with this policy, it has now taken steps to provide added protection for rock drillers by launching a protective guard for its surface drill rigs. This concept targets the potential risk of getting too close to the rotating drill rod while the drill rig is in operation. The slim line guard does not impair visibility or interfere with either the drilling operation or the rig’s performance. Neither is it a hindrance to serviceability as it can be easily opened using a standard wrench. Moreover, the lower section of the guard is made of rubber, allowing for flexibility when drilling in different positions and in difficult formations. On drill rigs that can be used for toe-hole drilling, the guard incorporates an extension on one side of the boom to give extra protection to the operator while the boom is in the horizontal position. Parallel with this, the boom systems on the rigs have been strengthened to accommodate the extra weight of the guard.

NEWS & REPORTS Atlas Copco’s Compressor Technique Vacuum Solutions
Atlas Copco:
I
expands its vacuum solutions
ntroduced extended vacuum solutions portfolio for rough and medium vacuum in Q2 2014 and announces pioneering vacuum technology will be unveiled in early 2015.
Atlas Copco has recently introduced a new portfolio of vacuum products which can support the specific vacuum needs of customers across a range of markets, and many common vacuum applications. Beside the new range of 2-stage oil-sealed rotary vane vacuum pumps, Atlas Copco also introduced a new range of vacuum booster pumps, piston pumps, liquid ring pumps and steam ejectors. This new portfolio can support industries including mining, cement, paper, refineries and food, as well as industries as diverse as aerospace, automotive, refrigeration, glass, bottling, canning and woodworking. In early 2015 an innovative, intelligent vacuum pump will be introduced - the GHS VSD+ - representing a real leap forward in the vacuum industry. The GHS VSD+ Series is a new range of highly efficient, intelligent vacuum pumps with Variable Speed Drive (VSD) from Atlas Copco. Based on the well-known and durable plugand-play design principles of Atlas Copco compressors, these vacuum pumps have been designed by vacuum engineers to deliver peak performance at operating pressures commonly found in industrial applications.
The GHS VSD+ series offer: • •
• • •
•
Energy savings of around 50% A state-of-the-art technology, variable speed drive (VSD) and innovative motor design combine to produce a leap forward in efficiency to dramatically reduce lifecycle costs. Significantly better performance against benchmarked oil-sealed and dry vane vacuum pump. Quiet operation – Noise levels are around half that of comparable technologies. Sustainable productivity due to built-in efficiency. Conforms to energy management and environmental commitments according to ISO 50001/14001. Reduced environmental impact due to ultra-high oil retention at all operating pressures – from ultimate pressure to atmospheric pressure.

NEWS & REPORTS Atlas Copco currently offers a range of vacuum solutions: The GVD 0.7-28 series of small 2-stage oil-sealed rotary vane pumps deliver excellent ultimate vacuum pressure, high pumping efficiency and superior vapor handling capabilities with quiet operation. These pumps offer a reliable and stable proven performance that set the industry standard for R&D and scientific pumping applications. All pumps/motors are approved to UL and CSA standards by an external test house and many features a patented mode selector switch, meaning one model is suitable for both high vacuum or high throughput applications. The GVD 40-275 series of 2-stage oil sealed rotary vane vacuum pumps are renowned for their high ultimate vacuum, rapid pumping speeds, quiet operation and ability to handle water vapor. These direct drive rotary vane pumps are inherently compact and vibration free, and with their finger-proof fan and coupling housings they offer excellent operator protection. A comprehensive range of accessories is available to allow use on the widest variety of vacuum applications. The ZRS 250-4200 mechanical booster pumps, based on the simple rotary lobe principle, remain the favorite pump for applications where high pumping speeds are required for pressures in the region of 0.01 to 50 mbar. This pump must always be backed by another pump, which can deliver against a high-pressure differential to atmospheric pressure. Operating at relatively low pressures, the mechanical booster pump is not exposed to the same concentrations of corrosive process media as is the backing pump, which makes it highly reliable. With over 10,000 units sold, the Atlas Copco GLS 250-500 Series of rotary piston pumps set the standard for performance and reliability as the industry’s most efficient, space-saving design. The GLS has been improved, upgraded and fine-tuned to deliver even better dependability and productivity combined with minimal maintenance and process downtime. This is crucial in demanding applications such as the automotive industry, aerospace sector and their supply chains. Atlas Copco liquid ring vacuum pumps are offered as standard packages in a number of configurations, suitable for operation in once through, partial or total recirculation. The AW liquid ring vacuum pumps are available for both single (AWS) and two stage pumps (AWD) with capacities from 200-37500 m³/h and vacuum levels down to 30 mbar (a).

The “PR Bild Award” is a prestigious competition headed by the dpa subsidiary News Aktuell. In 2014, the prize, which is much coveted among PR and image experts, was awarded for the tenth time. “Exceptionally beautiful. Even more: pure aesthetics,” was the jury’s verdict on this photo of the Voith turbine runner. The shot by photographer Marius Hoefinger shows work being done on a Voith turbine runner for the Bratsk hydropower plant in Siberia. “The fact that the photographer managed to capture this beauty in all its simplicity is an outstanding achievement,” said Edith StierThompson, Managing Director of News Aktuell, on behalf of the jury. With an unusual angle of a point of the production process the image sub-mitted by Voith is an impressive example of the amazing and surprising motifs that such an industrial production process can provide.

In order to increase the output and the efficiency of the plant, Voith is re-moving the old runners of the six machine units at Bratsk power plant and replaces them by appropriate new components. With an annual production of about 30,000 gigawatt hours, Bratsk is one of the world‘s most powerful hydropower plants. Companies, photographers and agencies from Germany, Austria and Swit-zerland submitted a total of more than 1,700 pictures for the Award. A spe cialist jury consisting of journalists and PR experts set up a shortlist of 10 images

New turnaround projects for Voith in Scandinavia • Voith Industrial Services continues to boost market position with turnarounds in Scandinavia • New project at St1 refinery in Gothenburgn
T
urnarounds are logistical masterstrokes: Piping and equipment in oil refineries, for example, have to be rigorously cleaned, inspected and tested, before being prepared and approved for the next trouble-free production cycle. Voith Industrial Services specializes in performing this in the shortest possible time while adhering to the most stringent safety standards and in making the facility ready for production as quickly as possible. To this end it prepares the personnel, mobilizes machinery, conducts extensive preliminary planning and reaches agreements with customers, partners and subcontractors. The provider of industrial services has just won new orders from refineries in Scandinavia, one of them at the St1 refinery in Gothenburg. The orders are for the mechanical maintenance of air coolers and heat exchangers. This process equipment transfers thermal energy from one material flow to the other and therefore ensures process stability and energy efficiency. Chemical and petrochemical plants are subject to stringent safety requirements. This is why they have to ensure that their service provider is able to work at this high standard. In addition, the refinery required comprehensive experience and know-how in all aspects of a turnaround in order to satisfy all internal and statutory requirements. Voith met these criteria. The core project for ST1 in Gothenburg is set to be completed within four weeks, supported by around 70 Voith employees. The St1 refinery managers had cooperated with Voith on previous projects and were impressed by the company’s reliable performance. At the St1 refinery personnel and machinery may have to deal with often very low temperatures during the core project in March. The project will only be successful because it is thoroughly prepared beforehand and the timetable is scrupulously adhered to, even in the case of unexpected events or technical challenges. The Voith team is delighted about the new orders which are allowing it to further consolidate its market position in Scandinavia.

NEWS & REPORTS Voith Turbo GmbH & Co. KG
Proven top performance: Voith’s 1.000th TPKL fluid coupling goes to a Chinese 6,4 MW belt conveyor drive
oith recently manufactured their 1.000th fluid coupling type TPKL. This coupling V will go to the DaTong Coal Mining Group in China. The group has already made good experiences with Voith fluid couplings: Convinced by the good performance of hydrodynamic power transmission the decision for the drive line arrangement in the main belt conveyor of a new coal mine was also made in favor of Voith fluid couplings. In this specific case the mine will receive four fluid couplings type TPKL. The fillcontrolled fluid couplings will be used in a 6,4 MW belt conveyor drive with demanding requirements. The 3.160 meter (10.367 feet) long underground belt conveyor is driven by four 1.600 kW motors, with a planned capacity of 4.000 tons per hour. The belt conveyor is designed for a demanding workload as it will transport coal uphill at a 14 degree angle.
The Manager of the Mechanical and Electrical Department reports: “We are very happy to use fill-controlled couplings from Voith running in our belt conveyors. The extraordinary soft start characteristic, very high reliability and good after sales service of these couplings provide guarantee to our normal safely production in our mines.” Voith started the production of the TPKL coupling series in 1997. This fluid coupling type was especially developed for demanding belt conveyor applications in mining. The coupling type provides excellent torque limitation for a smooth startup of the belt conveyor. It allows active load sharing with multimotor drives. Thanks to its standstill cooling function it can handle the most difficult startups multiple times in succession.

Buchbesprechung Literarturvorstellung Die neubearbeitete 2.

GESTEINE Systematik, Bestimmung, Entstehung 2. vollst. neu bearb. Auflage Schweizerbart | Stuttgart 2014
