New Hyatt’s Travel Safety & Security Global Policy

Working for a hospitality and tourism company, many of us have the opportunity to enjoy traveling and exploring hotels and destinations both near and far, for business and/or leisure. The prospect of traveling is exciting and energizing – and Hyatt’s Global Security team is here to help you have a successful travel experience.

To maintain a culture of care, safety and trust, Hyatt has instituted a new Travel Safety & Security Global Policy for all colleagues globally*. This document provides uniform guidelines so colleagues are equipped with information to proactively prepare themselves for a safe and secure travel experience.

To help you better prepare for travel, Bruce Mills, Hyatt’s AVP, Head of Global Security shares his Top 5 Business Travel Tips.

1. Be a prepared, confident traveler. Research and familiarize yourself with the unique environment of your destination, whether that be domestic or international. Even the most experienced travelers can benefit from a review of proven safety and security methods and practices.

2. Complete Hyatt’s travel safety e-course. All colleagues, especially those first time travelers or those who have not travelled recently, should enroll in and complete Hyatt’s travel safety e-learning course via the My Learning App on hyattconnect: Travel Security 101.

3. 3Setup pre -travel & real-time support. Hyatt contracts with International SOS (ISOS), the world’s leading travel risk management company, to supply each colleague with free access to online and mobile applications containing valuable and destination specific health, safety, security, and cultural insights. Colleagues can also download the “Assistance App” by searching ISOS Assistance in any mobile app store. This convenient app offers one push dialing to the closest Regional Support Center for 24/7 medical and safety/ security advice. The app also allows users to set their own frequency and sensitivity levels for receiving alerts and updates regarding their travel destinations.

4. Stay connected while traveling. Colleagues must leave a copy of their travel itinerary with a supervisor or team member so that their welfare can be verified in the event of an emergency. Communicate a time, method and check-in frequency with this person, as well as a family member(s) or emergency contact(s), so that Hyatt may be alerted promptly if a problem arises. Lastly, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with emergency contact options available (i.e., hotel, embassy, travel provider) – ISOS mobile app is a great resource for this specifically!

5. Be mindful when traveling with colleagues or groups. It’s important to be aware of the number of colleagues traveling together on an aircraft or other means of transportation in order to mitigate risk and ensure business continuity. The number of colleagues traveling together in a single mode of transportation is limited to no more than 49% of any given department, business or operating unit.

“It’s important to know that Hyatt is actively invested in the safety and security of each of you. We encourage you to utilize these tools and resources so that you’re empowered to make safer choices when traveling” said Bruce.

WELCOME TO HYATT: HERE BEGINS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE.

As part of the Onboarding process for our new colleagues and with the aim of further enhancing the Hyatt culture, the Welcome to Hyatt course, delivered by the Training & Development department of Amstar, was initiated on August 29th.

DURING THIS COURSE, VARIOUS TOPICS WERE COVERED:

- Our history

- Our purpose

Supporting the growth and development of our new colleagues through experience, exposure, and education is one of the primary goals of our company, as we nurture and uphold our Hyatt values.

Various activities are also organized among the participants to help them get to know each other better by sharing opinions, comments, and fun anecdotes, creating a distinct experience for the participants.

It’s important to emphasize that well-being is fundamental to our caring purpose. Therefore, various tools are shared to continue creating connections of empathy and inclusion that enable colleagues to live a culture of solidarity.

This course is complementary to the Onboarding experience and is mandatory for all new colleagues. It will be held on the last Tuesday of the month, both virtually and in person, so that all colleagues can continue to develop and reach their best version.

WE ARE MORE THAN A BEACH, WE ARE A COUNTRY

With the intention of continuing to share a culture of empathy through diversity and inclusion, we share a magical message from Richard Bourkey, Director of Jamaica Destination, regarding the commemoration of Independence Day of this beautiful nation.

I was born in Jamaica to parents who were also born in Jamaica. Their ethnic origins are Irish on my father’s side and English and Spanish on my mother’s side. My wife was born in London to a Jamaican father and an English mother. We have a 31-year-old daughter. The diverse ethnicities existing across the entire island are very evident.

Emancipation Day and Independence Day are closely linked and are often referred to as the “EMANCIPENDENCE” Holidays. Emancipation Day is a relatively newer holiday and therefore has less deeply rooted tradition. Most capitals have recreational activities and readings of the Emancipation Proclamation in city squares. Most businesses, hotels, and squares will be adorned with flags and garlands in the Jamaican colors of BLACK, GOLD, and GREEN.

“Out of many, one people”
–National motto.
12 | The Star Stories Diversity & Inclusion

Independence Day will place much more emphasis on traditional celebrations, with national competitions in dance, music, festival queens, spoken word, and agricultural exhibitions. Ancient festival songs and traditional music receive significant attention, including mento, ska, rocksteady, and reggae. The first two genres precede the independence that occurred in 1962 and paved the way for rocksteady, which eventually evolved into the globally renowned reggae music.

Food is always a fundamental part of any Jamaican celebration. Ackee and Saltfish are our national dish; however, other dishes include fried fish and bammy (cassava cakes), Rundown (anything cooked in a highly seasoned coconut milk sauce, usually

salted mackerel), Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken, and Jerk Pork are the most popular elements. Many of our desserts are steamed puddings; popular choices include Sweet Potato Pudding and Cornmeal Pudding (known as “Blue Draws” when steamed in banana leaves). We also have a range of coconut-based sweets, such as gizzada, grater cake, and coconut drops.

The main celebration usually involves gathering with close family and possibly attending one of the shows or watching them on television. Personally, I was invited to a private outdoor cooking event in the countryside by one of our tourism providers, where we were encouraged to dress in Jamaican colors and enjoy traditional food with appropriate music for independence. This event was well attended by many senior industry leaders, including the Minister of Tourism and other government representatives, as well as owners and managers of attractions and hotels. On the holiday Monday, I ventured into the deep hills of Jamaica (Croft Hill) to attend a traditional festival.

EVEN THIS ONLY SCRATCHES THE SURFACE OF WHAT JAMAICA IS ALL ABOUT.

WHALE SHARK: THE GENTLE GIANT

This massive creature can grow up to 40 feet (12 m) long. However, despite its size, the whale shark is considered a “gentle giant.”

3. IT CAN LIVE FOR MANY YEARS

It’s believed that less than 10% of whale sharks born survive to adulthood, but those that do can live up to 150 years.

4. NOT A FAST SWIMMER, BUT MIGRATES LONG DISTANCES

Except for the Mediterranean Sea, the whale shark can be found in all temperate and tropical oceans around the world as it migrates thousands of miles to different areas to feed. However, it moves slowly, traveling at speeds of less than 3 miles per hour (4.8 kph).

2. EATING IS A LABORIOUS TASK

The whale shark feeds through filtration and cannot bite or chew. It can process over 1,585 gallons (6,000 liters) of water per hour through its gills. Its mouth can measure up to four feet (1.2 m) wide, but the whale shark’s teeth are so small that they can only process small shrimp, fish, and plankton using its dermal denticles as a suction filter.

5. LIKE OTHER SHARKS, IT’S THREATENED

Many sharks are accidentally caught in fishing gear or intentionally hunted for their fins, which are considered a delicacy in Asia. Additionally, their oceanic habitat is in danger, facing threats such as climate change warming the water—impacting both habitats and prey—and plastic pollution— which can be ingested or lead to entanglement of the whale shark.

ELEVATE YOUR WELLBEING

SLEEP

Not getting enough sleep is associated with increased hunger, higher blood sugars, poor concentration, frequent illness and impaired problemsolving. Make sure to give yourself at least 7 hours of sleep a night.

ADD FIBER

Vegetables, fruits, nuts and grains are rich in fiber. Fiber helps you stay full, so you are less likely to eat mindlessly. Strive to eat at least 25 g of fiber a day.

STAY HYDRATED

Water is the perfect way to keep hydrated and keeps appetite in check. Add a splash of flavor with fruit juice or fresh cucumbers, lime slices or fruit. Be creative.

EXPLORE NEW FOODS

Expand your palate by trying new recipes that include seasonal foods you can’t get year-round. You can visit local farmer’s markets for fresh ingredients or harvest your own veggies at home. Take advantage of the long sunny evenings while they’re here and grill healthy options outside.

THIS SUMMER

Summer is a great time to think about how to become the best version of you. Use some of the following tips to help you thrive this summer!

EXPOSURE TO NATURAL SUNLIGHT IN LEVELS OF VITAMIN D AND SEROTONIN

They are known to boost your mood. Taking a moment to step outdoors, smell the roses, feel the sand under your toes or watch a sunset can provide a sense of calming and wellbeing. Pick up a new outdoor hobby where you can spend 30 minutes in the sunshine. Whether it is gardening, hiking or paddle boarding, spending time outdoors is an essential element of self-care.

GRATITUDE

Find a moment each day to reflect on a few things that brought you joy or good feelings. Being grateful and positive can help you thrive in a healthy life.

HEALTH AND WEALTH FAIR

We spend the majority of the day at work, and therefore, we’re unable to conduct business transactions as we would like, along with other aesthetic factors such as air quality, among others, that have a negative impact on the well-being of team members. The Health and Wealth Day aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle that would enable our team to make smarter financial decisions that impact their future.

Various businesses were invited to our office space to facilitate team members in conducting business transactions, as they couldn’t do so due to work commitments, as well as to undergo basic medical check-ups.

M aj o r ank ing ns ti tutio n s , a credit union, a n investme n t comp an y, national benefits agencies such as the National Housing Trust (NHT) and the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), an insurance company, and medical facilities like Oneness Health Center attended, where they conducted basic health checks.

22 | The Star Stories Health & Wellness

It’s now evident that we need to continue striving to ensure that the work environment is healthy and free from unnecessary noise.

In conclusion, the event was a success, and we look forward to organizing another one next year.
