INTERVIEW WITH THE AREA LEADER:

ALEXANDER JOHN

What has been your trajectory within the company?

I started working at Amstar after the Brazil World Cup in August 2014 as eBuisness Manager. My role and responsibilities within the organization constantly evolved along with the growth of the company. First the website, then strategic account growth with UVC and AMR Collection among other responsibilities. A big milestone for the entire team and myself was the merger of Apple Leisure Group with the Mark Travel Corporation and later the acquisition through Hyatt. Today, I am proud to be leading the Inside Sales Team in this ever-changing environment as a Senior Manager for Direct Sales. Covid showed us that nothing is set in stone, but as a team can overcome any situation if we act agile, communicate with clarity, and apply accountability.

What does Amstar mean to you?

Amstar is an established company in constant transformation innovating and improving the guest experience while in the destination. The ongoing evolution of the company gives every team member the opportunity to grow and develop themselves by taking on new challenges. Working at Amstar never gets boring. My role evolved constantly over the 8 years with Amstar which allowed me to acquire new skills and grow both personally and professionally.

20 | The Star Stories

What is the main strength of the department?

The mutual support among our team members and the ongoing knowledge exchange with other areas of the company is a key strength of the Inside Sales department. Exceeding the expectations of our guests and making Travel Advisors look good, are the two main reasons for us growing our / repeating B2B business.

Our main strength:

Exceeding the expectations of our guests

What are the main challenges facing the department today?

Since Covid, we have worked a lot in eliminating inefficiencies in processes and improving the service levels for our customers. The call migration to inContact has been a great enhancement in technology for us. To further increase efficiencies, we need to take the next step. Integration of email, text messages, CRM, and ResRap all into one Omnichannel Solution is the logical consequence. As I mentioned before, working at Amstar never gets boring.

What departmental information would be helpful for all colleagues within the company to know that would help the department provide better service, meet its goals, or make a greater impact?

The team is what makes everything go! Because of everyone’s dedication and commitment to constantly improve, sales have doubled in comparison to 2019. Our re-vamped Leisure Group program has been a huge success so far. We have managed to capture a lot of new group business that previously went elsewhere. The attitude of our Inside Sales Team and the quality of our services provided in the destination is what makes the difference for our Travel Advisor.

TRAINING IN LOS CABOS

As every year, last Wednesday, November 23, the team of customer service representatives at hotels in Los Cabos had a personal goal-setting training for the start of 2023.

The content of the training was based on raising awareness of the operation of the Reticular Activation System (S.A.R.) and the use of self-conditioning, emotional anchors, and goal-based methodology with S.M.A.R.T. format. (Which says that the goal statement must be: Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and with a determined Time) and that allows a better understanding of the use of the aforementioned tools, so that each member of the team measures their progress and achieves what has been achieved. proposed for 2023.

A-Learning/TOP 10
26 | The Star Stories

It is worth mentioning that the destination management in Los Cabos has been practicing this exercise since 2016 with very good results for the customer service teams (at the beginning and until 2020 with the Riviera Maya team and -later- and also since 2020, in the most important destination in the Mexican Pacific). In addition to self-evaluation and self-commitment, it is about visualizing the progress that each team member achieves based on their own definition of success.

The methodology is based on a concept of Zig Ziglar who states: "If you help people to achieve their objectives, they -surely- will help you to achieve yours sufficiently, this is true in your corporate life, your professional life and your Personal life."

Congratulations Los Cabos team, we hope you close this 2022 wonderfully and that everyone achieves what they have planned for 2023.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Motivation is derived from the word motive, which comes from the Latin motus/motum meaning movement or motor. "A motive is that which determines or conditions a person to act in a certain direction and sense” (Carrillo Lopez 2001).

Motivation is linked to many processes and aspects of a person, both simple and complex: Emotions, needs, aspirations, senses, thoughts, society, ethics, culture, health, crisis, among others. This raises the following questions: Which needs do you want to satisfy? What drives you to get out of bed every day? What are your thoughts? What does society tell you?

We are influenced beings; therefore, knowing ourselves enables us to manage everything we want to achieve.

We emotionally care
Human beings are different, we have different lifestyles, moods, perceptions and, likewise, we have different motivations.
28 | The Star Stories

We emotionally care

It is thus important to highlight that there are intrinsic and extrinsic motivations.

Intrinsic motivation is motivation that comes from oneself. It motivates you to do the things you really like to do, e.g., helping someone carry their shopping bags upstairs, not because of what they might think, but because it makes you feel good about yourself.

Can we always be motivated?

On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is that which comes from outside, external to the person and is based on negative or positive rewards, but which are beyond the control of the individual who performs this type of action, e.g., working exclusively for money.

We are emotional beings with different personalities, moods and history; therefore, in the course of life, there are situations that often limit us and prevent us from feeling motivated.

Because of this, we will not always be with the same disposition or attitude to perform a task.

For this reason, we must have clear tasks, concrete objectives, plans, etc.

How far do you want to go?

Knowing the answer to this question helps you in times of discouragement and when taking control of your life and making decisions. It helps us to focus and maintain a clear vision.

People around us influence our state of mind, our mood and, of course, our health.

That is why it is so important to seek relationships with people who bring out the best in you.

Being around them, you will be able to improve and grow, and they will bring greater value to your life.

We need to be accompanied by people who push us out of our comfort zone, who drive us to achieve our dreams and who help us build the lives we want to live.

CONSERVATION DAY NOVEMBER 27TH

In Mexico we commemorate National Conservation Day on November 27, the same day that the first National Park was decreed. One of the important actions in the world for conservation is establishing protected natural areas that are: a large geographical space defined, regulated and managed that has not suffered significant alterations by human activities or where preservation or restoration is required through legal programs of ecological ordering, all this to achieve long-term conservation of biodiversity and its associated cultural values.

Data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 14.7 percent of all land on the planet and 10% percent of territorial waters are under protection. Which translates as 202,467 protected areas that cover about 20 million km2 around the world.

The highest rates of land protection are found in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, with a total of 5 million km2, of which 2.47 million km2 correspond to Brazil, which has the most extensive network of protected areas. of the world.

By contrast, the lowest rates are part of the Middle East with some 119,000 km2, which is equivalent to just under 3 percent.

THE POWER OF WALKING BY DAVID PRITCHARD

Adding walking to your routine improves your physical and mental health, experts say. Regular walking supports a healthy immune system, boosts your metabolism, and strengthens your joints, muscles and bones. It also helps relieve stress.

Daily walking increases metabolism by burning extra calories and preventing muscle loss, which is particularly important as we age. You may even notice your pants start to loosen around your midsection, even if the number on the scale isn’t moving much. That’s because regular walking can help reduce abdominal fat and, as a result, improve your body’s response to insulin.

Experts recommend walking at least 30 minutes daily for the greatest benefits. Here are a couple of ways to get the most out of it:

Mix in intervals. Intervals, defined as short spurts with a quicker pace or going up hills, are key in getting the most out of walking. Increasing your speed for small segments of time during a 30-minute walk allows you to burn more calories than if you strolled at a moderate pace the whole time. It also benefits your cardiorespiratory system.

Try warming up with an easy walk for three minutes. Then spend 25 minutes alternating between one minute The Star

of walking at a moderate pace and one minute of brisk walking. Cool down with an easy walk for two minutes.

Explore nature. Taking walks outdoors has several benefits, too. Exposure to the sun’s natural vitamin D helps protect the brain’s neurons and reduces inflammation. Breathing natural air, rather than recycled air indoors, improves brain function. And the stimulation caused by the activity and nature produce endorphins that regulate your mood.

Power walking 101: Here’s how you do it

Good power walking technique is essential if you want to maximize benefits and prevent injuries. Here are some good guidelines to follow:

Watch your posture

Keep your eyes forward, shoulders back, and head upright. Pull your belly button in toward your spine to engage your core muscles. If you find yourself slumping forward, take a moment to correct your body position.

If you notice you’re holding tension in your shoulders and neck, relax and release them. Good posture will help you maintain speed and will help protect you from injury.

Health & Wellness 36 | The Star Stories

Swing your arms gently

With your arms bent at about a 90-degree angle, move your arms up and back so the opposite arm and leg are advancing at the same time. If your right foot is stepping forward, your left arm should be reaching forward, too.

Adding the arm motion will help you walk faster. You don’t need wild swings or chicken wings to get that benefit. Exaggerated movements could slow you down and increase the chance of hurting yourself.

Focus on controlling your range of motion. Your hand shouldn’t rise higher than your collarbone and shouldn’t cross the center of your body.

Power walking is an exercise technique that emphasizes speed and arm motion as a means of increasing health benefits.

Done correctly, regular power walking is good for your cardiovascular health, joint health, and emotional

MISTAKES THAT CAN LEAD YOU TO 5

In this magazine edition, we want to tell you about Burnout Syndrome and the mistakes that can lead you to suffer. Before getting into the subject, we want you to know what this syndrome is, which is so common nowadays.

Burnout is a mental state with long-term unresolved stress, which can negatively affect work and life. It is a syndrome that people who suffer from it cannot realize. As it has prevalent symptoms, identifying Burnout syndrome is complicated, hindering its identification and subsequent solution.

In general, it is usually a discrepancy between the expectations and ideals of the employee and the actual requirements of their position. People feel emotional stress and increasing job-related disillusionment. This stage is burnout itself, where symptoms become critical. Continuing is often not possible in this state, as it becomes increasingly difficult to cope, presenting some of these symptoms:

Stopping doing things due to mental and physical exhaustion. Sometimes, being in a situation of profound fatigue makes us think of stopping doing something that, precisely, is very beneficial. Have a social life, play sports, practice your favorite activity, and meet for a drink. In short, do not let yourself be swept away by fatigue.
